General Peeker Hooded Towel Instructions
Created by: www.jjsappliques.com
You will need the following supplies to make this design:
1. Embroidery machine and ability to transfer design
2. Fabric for applique pieces
3. Embroidery thread
4. Tear away stabilizer
5. Bath Towel for hood (1 towel makes 2 hoods)
6. Bath Towel for body
These instructions include how to cut towels needed, steps to
embroider the peeker design on the hood and how to stitch the
towel hood to the main body towel.
Peeker designs are made as a regular applique with outline, tack
down, and satin stitches. These are general instructions that will
work with all peeker towel designs created by me. Use the
stitchmap included in the file you purchased to determine thread
colors, fabric colors, and the actual stitching order of the exact
design file you are making.
First, determine the towels you would like to use for the hood and
the main body part of the hooded towel. These can be the same
color or different colors/patterns if desired. In this example, I
used a solid color towel for the hood and a coordinating striped
towel for the main towel. Both are standard bath sized towels you
can purchase at most home goods stores like Target, Walmart,
Kohls, etc.
Cutting a bath towel for the hood
Two hood sections can be cut out of each standard bath towel. Lay
flat a bath-sized towel for the hood. Most standard towels will
have two patterned strips on either end a few inches from the ends,
making that area unusable. Cut two hood pieces between those two
strips, each
section against
each of the
finished edges of
the towel. The
black dotted lines
are approximate
for how the towel
should be cut.
The hood should be 24” wide by 10” tall for an average child, but you
can make it smaller for babies or larger for teens/adults as needed;
this is just a guideline. The width needs to have the finished edge of
the towel. There
is a lot of wasted
towel because of
the patterned
strip on either
end; feel free to
save those cut
off sections to
use for applique
on other towels.
Towel Hood is 24” wide by 10” tall with finished edge at bottom
The stitchmap below is the peeker design used as an example in
these instructions. Thread and applique fabric choices can be
changed to those you would like to see in your creation!
All peeker designs begin with a single placement line stitch on which
you will place the finished edge of your hood towel and the applique
steps follow it.
Stitch design onto cut towel for hood
Step 1. Hoop stabilizer
then stitch out Step 1 on
the stitchmap for your
design. This is a straight
line toward the bottom of
your hoop in every peeker
design I sell.
If you like to hoop only stabilizer and pin or sticky spray your towel
to your stabilizer, this is the placement stitch showing the center
of the lowest satin stitch in the design. If you prefer to hoop your
towel with your stabilizer, you can stitch this placement line to make
sure it is in the right place and use a seam ripper to remove the
stitches so they will not show later, or skip this step.
Step 2. If you prefer
the sticky spray
method, spray your
stabilizer now. Find
the center of your hood
towel by folding it in
half, placing the
finished edge just
below the stitched
placement line as shown
in the middle of your
hoop.
Step 3. Open up the towel and smooth out inside hoop as shown.
Here I am
showing the
towel flipped
up just past
the towel edge
so you can see
how far below
the stitched
line the towel
is placed.
If you stitched the placement stitch onto stabilizer, smooth your
towel straight on the stabilizer or pin your towel in place so it will
not move on your
machine. I like to
repeat the first step
(the straight line
stitch) on the towel
now just to be sure I
have the towel in the
correct position and to
keep it from moving.
Step 4. Place a piece of wash away stabilizer on top of your towel
(this helps prevent
cutting of the towel
when trimming
applique fabrics)
then continue to
stitch design
following the
stitchmap for your
design.
Step 5. When
your design is
completely
stitched, remove
towel from your
hoop and
stabilizer.
Attach hood to body towel
Step 1. Fold hood towel in half with the right side of design inside
and stitch the raw
horizontal edge
using serger or
zigzag together to
finish edges.
Step 2. Turn hood right side
out and form the triangle.
Step 3. Find the middle of
the body towel. Fold is on
the side to locate the middle
with wrong sides together.
Step 4. Place the middle
of the hood onto the
middle of the body towel
with back of hood and
right side of body towel
together.
Pin in place.
Step 5. Stitch hood
towel to body towel
using serger or
zigzag to finish
edges.
Close up of finished edges shown below.
Rolling your hooded towel
Fold 1/3 towel from
bottom up.
Fold that 1/3 up again.
Roll left side toward
middle of towel.
Roll all the way to the
edge of the hood.
Repeat rolling with
the right side.
Tie rolled towel as
shown with ribbon,
Fold Over Elastic,
jute, etc.
Fold hood
over the back
of rolled body
towel.
Cuff the
hood towel
a couple
inches
below the
body towel
as shown.
Bring the hood
over the top of
the rolled body
towel and
adjust to get
your desired
affect.
Tada!
