I WOULD LIKE TO MEET BILL KELLER
I must admit that I am an inveterate reader of the New York Times and have been
since I have been a child. It was a staple in our home along with the Brooklyn
Eagle. Now with the IPad, I can peruse the paper even before I get out of bed.
What’s more, with a click I can save any article I choose. This past week I was intrigued, and I must say amused, to read an article by one Bill Keller. It was all
about a married priesthood and what a wonderful idea he thought that would be
for the Church. This is hardly a new concept and it has been making the rounds
for centuries. Everybody (or at least almost everybody) understands that celibacy
is a discipline of the Church and can be changed by any Pope.
As a matter of fact, we already have married priests in the Eastern Rites of the
Catholic Church and there are Anglican ministers who have converted and were
ordained Catholic priests. There are also some other married Protestant ministers
who have converted and become priests. Incidentally, way back in 1956, Pope
Pius XII permitted a Lutheran minister who was married to be ordained a
priest after his conversion. You may well recall that the first Pope, St. Peter,
was married. We know that because Jesus cured his mother-in-law of a fever.
(Luke 4: 38-39) The point is there is nothing new here. Nevertheless, this article
took up half the Op Ed page!
The New York Times understands that the Catholic Church is interesting –
even to its enemies and antagonists. Bill Keller himself readily admits that he
left the Catholic Church, but he doesn’t say why. He tells us that he went to
Catholic school and very much admired his eight grade nun, Sister Mary Robert.
She subsequently left the Convent and married a priest. One thing that Bill Keller
said was so true—even though he left the Church, he is still very much interested in
what is going on in the Church. He just can’t get away from the Church totally. He
compares his situation to that of a person who gives up his citizenship but still
wants to know what is going on in the home country. He is not alone! In this country there is an unending fascination with the Catholic Church and Her teachings
and policies. And everybody loves Pope Francis! Many mistakenly believe (and
perhaps hope) that he will overturn former teachings and get with their
agenda. They couldn’t be more wrong. If you have any doubts, just go online and
read his magnificent Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of
the Gospel.) The language is easy and readily understood.
I may be wrong, but I have an idea why Bill Keller is so interested in the
Catholic Church. I think it has to do with the Sacrament of Baptism and the
indelible mark that was placed on his immortal soul as an infant. In his heart of
hearts, I suspect, he longs for the joy of loving Christ and the peace and joy of the sacraments.
That never quite goes away and that explains why there are so many death bed conversions. I
would really like to meet Bill Keller and have a chat—I won’t, but I will pray for him and hope he
returns to the Church he loved so much in the eight grade. Maybe you’ll join me in saying a prayer
for him. Like all the others who have left the Church, he would find a warm and loving welcome.
In Jesus and Mary,
Monsignor James M. McDonald
We must be good stewards of God’s gifts to us, receiving them gratefully and cultivating them

U.S. Bishops Issue ‘Special Message’ on
HHS Mandate at Conclusion of General Assembly
November 13, 2013
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a “Special
Message” at the conclusion of their fall General Assembly, November 13, in Baltimore.
USCCB regulations regarding statements and publications define a Special Message as a
statement, only issued at general meetings, that the general membership considers appropriate in view of the circumstances at the time. The message was passed unanimously.
Full text of the Special Message follows:
Special Message from the Bishops of the United States
The bishops of this country have just concluded their traditional fall meeting in Baltimore
and have spent time on issues important to them and their people: help to those suffering
from Typhoon Haiyan; an update on the situation in Haiti; matters of worship and teaching;
service to the poor; and comprehensive immigration reform. Among those priorities is the
protection of religious freedom, especially as threatened by the HHS mandate.
Pope Francis has reminded us that “In the context of society, there is only one thing which
the Church quite clearly demands: the freedom to proclaim the Gospel in its entirety, even
when it runs counter to the world, even when it goes against the tide.”
We stand together as pastors charged with proclaiming the Gospel in its entirety. That
Gospel calls us to feed the poor, heal the sick, and educate the young, and in so doing witness to our faith in its fullness. Our great ministries of service and our clergy, religious sisters and brothers, and lay faithful, especially those involved in Church apostolates, strive to
answer this call every day, and the Constitution and the law protect our freedom to do so.
Yet with its coercive HHS mandate, the government is refusing to uphold its obligation to
respect the rights of religious believers. Beginning in March 2012, in United for Religious
Freedom, we identified three basic problems with the HHS mandate: it establishes a false
architecture of religious liberty that excludes our ministries and so reduces freedom of religion to freedom of worship; it compels our ministries to participate in providing employees
with abortifacient drugs and devices, sterilization, and contraception, which violates our
deeply-held beliefs; and it compels our faithful people in business to act against our teachings, failing to provide them any exemption at all.
(continued)
Despite our repeated efforts to work and dialogue toward a solution, those problems
remain. Not only does the mandate undermine our ministries’ ability to witness to our
faith, which is their core mission, but the penalties it imposes also lay a great burden
on those ministries, threatening their very ability to survive and to serve the many
who rely on their care.
The current impasse is all the more frustrating because the Catholic Church has long
been a leading provider of, and advocate for, accessible, life-affirming health care.
We would have preferred to spend these recent past years working toward this
shared goal instead of resisting this intrusion into our religious liberty. We have been
forced to devote time and resources to a conflict we did not start nor seek.
As the government’s implementation of the mandate against us approaches, we
bishops stand united in our resolve to resist this heavy burden and protect our religious freedom. Even as each bishop struggles to address the mandate, together we
are striving to develop alternate avenues of response to this difficult situation. We
seek to answer the Gospel call to serve our neighbors, meet our obligation to provide
our people with just health insurance, protect our religious freedom, and not be coerced to violate our consciences. We remain grateful for the unity we share in this
endeavor with Americans of all other faiths, and even with those of no faith at all. It is
our hope that our ministries and lay faithful will be able to continue providing insurance in a manner consistent with the faith of our Church. We will continue our efforts
in Congress and especially with the promising initiatives in the courts to protect the
religious freedom that ensures our ability to fulfill the Gospel by serving the common
good.
This resolve is particularly providential on this feast of the patroness of immigrants,
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini. She was a brave woman who brought the full vigor of her
deep religious faith to the service of the sick, the poor, children, the elderly, and the
immigrant. We count on her intercession, as united we obey the command of Jesus
to serve the least of our brothers and sisters.

THE KNIGHT’S CORNER
(Providing information from the Knights of Columbus)
POPE ADDRESSES KNIGHTS – In a recent address (10 Oct. 2013) to the Board of Directors
of the Knights of Columbus, Pope Francis said, “I wish to express my gratitude for the unfailing
support in which your Order has always given to the works of the Holy See. This support finds
particular expression in the Vicarius Christi Fund, which is an eloquent sign of your solidarity
with the Successor of Peter in his concern for the universal Church, but it is also seen in the daily
prayers, sacrifices and apostolic works of so many Knights in their local Councils, their parishes and their communities. May prayer, witness to the faith and concern for our brothers and sisters in need always be the three pillars supporting your work both individually and corporately. In fidelity to the vision of the Venerable Michael J. McGivney,
may you continue to seek new ways of being a leaven of the Gospel and a force for the spiritual renewal of society. As the present Year of Faith draws to a close, I commend all of you in a special way to the intercession of Saint
Joseph, the protector of the Holy Father of Nazareth, who is an admirable model of those manly virtues of quiet
strength, integrity and fidelity which the Knights of Columbus are committed in preserving, cultivating and passing on
to future generations of Catholic men.”
KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS – Corpus Christi Council has several “Keep Christ in Christmas” items available
to show your belief in the real meaning of this Holy Season. Items available include lawn signs ($9), car magnets ($4

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA
This year we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on
Monday, December 9th, since the second Sunday of Advent takes precedence over the feast day. The Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception, as
all doctrine that deals with Mary, is centered on her motherhood, on her as Mother of
God. Without Mary, salvation would never have occurred. The angel greets her “Hail full
of grace! The Lord is with you.” What could this mean? that Mary was conceived without sin, that her conception was immaculate, and that is what we celebrate. Mary is
unique, God preserved her, Mary never committed a sin, she was full of grace.
It is most appropriate to celebrate this Feast Day during Advent as we prepare for His
birth and await His second coming. The Incarnation, Redemption, and Salvation are possible through Mary’s YES! “May it be done to me according to your word.” Mary shows
us through her obedience how to be holy, as God wants for all of us. May we have a true
devotion to Mary, and she will lead us to her Son, Jesus Christ, and we would make her
words our own “Behold I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to
your word.”
“The Mystery of Christmas, God becomes Man” by Father Larry Richards. In this inspiring talk, Fr. Richards illuminates how the true joy of Christmas is found in the greatest gift ever given- the gift of Jesus Christ to the whole world. With humor, compassion,
and clarity, Fr. Larry gets to heart of the true meaning of Christmas and helps us to better
appreciate the immensity of God’s love for us, His children.
“Love Hurts. The True Meaning Behind Redemptive Suffering” by Matthew Leonard. In this presentation, Matthew Leonard focuses on the new idea of love proclaimed
by Christ and how it gives meaning to human suffering, penance. By looking at these issues we will discover the secret of how we can “Rejoice in the Lord always!” no matter
what happens.
Again, stop by the kiosks and gets copies of these new CDs for you to listen to and to
give away to the many souls that need to share these talks. You will be spreading God’s
seeds of knowledge to those who would not otherwise be able to have them.
Since the Christmas season is upon us, consider our CDs as part of your gift list. It is a
tremendous way to evangelize to so many needed souls. The very inexpensive cost, only
$3.00 a copy, makes it affordable!

PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY
Love — caritas — is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and
generous engagement in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that has its origin in God, Eternal Love and Absolute Truth. Encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, June 29, 2009.
PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANY BAGS OF CLOTHING ON THE BACK STEPS OF THE PARISH SOCIAL MINISTRY OFFICE! IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE ITEMS, PLEASE CONTACT THE PARISH SOCIAL

THANK YOU: On behalf of the many families that received Thanksgiving Baskets, turkeys and gift cards to
purchase additional food items for their dinner, I would like to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart!
The generosity and kindness that you our beautiful parishioners, Catholic Daughters of America and our Girl/
Boy Scout troops shared with our families were absolutely amazing! Please know that all of our families were
so genuinely appreciative and because of your kindness everyone was able to enjoy a delicious meal. I would
also to thank the owners of one of our local restaurants, Mitch & Toni’s for their generosity in opening up
their restaurant for a few of our families to enjoy a Thanksgiving Dinner!
FOOD PANTRY: Our monthly food drive is taking place this weekend, December 7th & 8th. Please drop off your donations either to the back of the church or you may bring your donations of non-perishable food and personal hygiene items to

cards which we use for our families throughout the year.

by Friday, December 13th. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE ANY GIFTS OR GIFT CARDS IN CHURCH!
There are many families, senior citizens and singles who are members of our own parish who have benefitted
from the generosity of the many individuals who graciously provided gifts this year. In addition we provided
