GLEBE FARM HEDGING
Langham, Colchester, Essex. co4 5pp
Welcome to our 2013-2014 catalogue, and thank you for showing an interest in our plants.
Glebe Farm Hedging is a well established family business and hedge plant specialist. From our farm on the
edge of the Dedham Vale near the Essex/Suffolk border, we supply over 100 varieties of hedge plants, hedging
shrubs and young native trees by mail order to customers throughout the UK and occasionally to the
Continent. The majority of the hedging and trees we offer are supplied as 2 year bare root plants, which are
lifted and despatched to order between late October and April. These include Mixed Native Hedging, Beech,
Box, Hawthorn, Hornbeam, Laurel, Privet, Yew and many others. We also grow a range of pot grown hedge
plants, including several varieties of hardy Lavender. Our clients include estate managers and farmers, local
authorities, national institutions, landscapers and developers, and private owners of gardens both large and
small, many of whom have long term planting projects and return to us year after year.
Online ordering will soon be available at www.hedge-plants.co.uk - but if you would rather talk to us, please
ring to discuss your requirements, or you can simply fill out the detachable order form at the back of this price
list, then post or fax it to us. Plants are lifted and packed to order - lead time is usually around 4-7 days, but at
busy times may take longer. We will always confirm your order and delivery date in writing or by telephone.
Most orders are sent by carrier on a nationwide next day service to ensure that plants reach you in the peak of
health. Local customers are welcome to collect pre-booked orders. All plants are despatched with planting and
aftercare instructions, and are guaranteed for the first growing season (see terms and conditions for details). For
further information, advice and customer testimonials please refer to our website.
As gardeners and farmers ourselves, we understand the long-term commitment you take in planting hedges and
trees for the benefit of wildlife, the environment and future generations, and we take great care to select only the
best plants available, and to offer our best advice. We take great pride in the quality, value and performance of
our plants, and the service we offer. If you are unsure about which species to plant, how many plants you will
need, or have any other questions, please get in touch - we are always happy to help.
Yours sincerely,
William Baird, Managing Director,
Glebe Farm Hedging.
Glossary of Terms used in this list.
Sd= Young bare-rooted seedlings (1 year old plants), offering great value for money
especially for larger planting schemes.
Tr= Bare-rooted transplants, lifted as seedlings and spaced out in the field for a
further year or more to allow roots and branch systems to develop. Most plants we
list are 2 or 3 yrs old, some (for example Yew) are 4 yrs old.
RB= Root-balled. Larger field grown plants, lifted with well-developed roots and
soil, which are then wrapped for protection.

GROWTH RATES. We are often asked how quickly hedge plants will grow to form a hedge. Growth rates vary enormously depending
on soil conditions, weed competition, feeding, watering etc. In general, given reasonable care, plants listed as ‘medium-large’ will grow
between 30-60cm (1-2ft) per year, and small-medium will grow 15-30cm (6-12ins). Rates of growth may be slower in the first year but
will speed up as the roots become established. As a guide, large hedges of about 5ft may take around 3–5 years to form, smaller hedges
should establish in between 2 and 4 years from planting, depending on variety and initial size.

TRADITIONAL MIXED NATIVE HEDGE
Most old field hedges are a mixture of different native species that have
colonised the field boundary over many years. It is said that each variety
represents 100 years of the hedge’s life. This mixture is based on
observations of traditional hedges around this part of East Anglia, and
comprises of 6 species (or 600 years of history?):
Hawthorn 50%, Blackthorn 25%, Field Maple 10%, Oak 5%, Hazel 5%,
Dog Rose 5%.
Best planted randomly in a staggered double row (4-7 plants per metre)
‘EXOTIC’ NATIVE MIX
A colourful mix of native plants, with more conspicuous flowers, berries
and Autumn leaf colour, as an alternative to our traditional mixture. Great
for wildlife conservation. 9 species:
Hawthorn 40%, Blackthorn 25%, Guelder Rose 5%, Spindle 5%, Common
Dogwood 5%, Native Privet or Wayfaring Tree 5%, Sea Buckthorn 5%,
Field Maple 5%, Scotch Rose 5%.
Best planted randomly in a staggered double row (4-7 plants per metre)
THORNLESS MIXED NATIVE HEDGE
Visually stunning and natural, this mix contains all thornless native
species, suitable for use in school grounds, places where young children
may have access or anywhere that thorns are not wanted! 5 species:
Hornbeam 50%, Field Maple 25%, Spindle 10%, Common Dogwood
10%, Hazel 5%.
Best planted randomly in a staggered double row (4-7 plants per metre)
TAPESTRY HEDGE
A mixed hedge made up of several species with similar growth patterns
but contrasting leaf tones and colours through the seasons, to provide a
vivid back-drop. Our mix consists of the following:
Common Beech 40%, Purple Beech 20%, Field Maple 10%, Golden
Privet 10%, Cotoneaster franchetii 10%, Amelanchier lamarckii 10%
Single row – 3 plants per metre. Double row – 5 plants per metre.
FRUIT and NUT HEDGE
A mixed hedge producing an array of edible fruit (which usually require
some preparation) or nuts. They also make an attractive, colourful hedge
which will benefit wildlife.
Myrobalan Plum 50%, Rosa rugosa 10%, Cornelian Cherry 10%, Hazel
10%, Sea Buckthorn 10%, Blackthorn (Sloe) 10%.
Best planted randomly in a staggered double row (4-7 plants per metre)
‘FARMERS’ ECONOMY FIELD MIX
A traditional field mix of 1yr seedlings: Hawthorn 60%, Blackthorn 10%,
Field Maple 10%, Dogwood 10%, Dog Rose 10%

HEDGES and CONSERVATION
Mixed hedges are the best way to create a natural barrier that will blend with the surrounding countryside. In conservation terms hedgerows play a vitally important
role as wildlife ‘highways’, nesting cover, and as a source of food. They can support up to 80% of our native woodland bird population, 50% of our mammals, 30%
of our butterflies, and many, many species of insect – the grassy verge at the base of the hedge can also be home to reptiles and ground nesting birds.
Here are some Glebe Farm tips to maximise wildlife appeal:- Where space allows, plant a double row hedge (usually 5 plants per metre) as a wider hedge is of
greater benefit to wildlife. If possible allow some of the plants to grow into trees which will act as platforms for songbirds and appeal to high nesting/roosting birds.
Allow grass verges to establish at the base of the hedge and don’t mow until late Summer. Avoid trimming the hedge until late Summer – you could try only
trimming alternate sides of the hedge in alternate years, thus ensuring that you minimise disturbance and leave plenty of berry-bearing shoots for the
Autumn/Winter.
We strongly recommend that you look at field hedges in your area and make up your own mix if ours are not suitable. For native species please choose from the
species marked # on the following pages. Please ask us for advice on mixtures especially for horse paddocks or stewardship schemes.

BEECH, COMMON or GREEN (Fagus sylvatica). #
Well known native deciduous tree, makes an excellent hedge. When kept trimmed, Autumn
leaves are retained throughout winter. Good in all but very wet soils. For a thick hedge grow
in a staggered double row (4-8 plants per metre). Clip in mid-late Summer.
30-45cm
BEECH, PURPLE or ‘COPPER’ (Fagus sylvatica purpurea) #

and rich copper in Autumn. A natural sport of Common Beech. Works well when planted
with Common Beech to create a colourful mixed hedge. Planting etc as above.
