PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - Dorothy Penney
I hope 2014 is treating you all well. The bookstore continues to do well and the
Friends’ membership is growing. Thank you to all who have renewed memberships
and welcome to those who are new members. Also, I’d like to thank all of you who
continue to donate all the wonderful books to the bookstore and those of you who continue to buy them. Whoever said people will stop buying books with the advent of
eBooks certainly hasn’t spent any time in the Camarillo Friends’ Bookstore!
Recently we have been getting calls from members who have sent in checks for renewal and were concerned that they had been misplaced. Just to let you all know,
Sandy Roth, our membership committee chair, does all the paperwork for new members and renewals. She asked that I let you know that she gives the membership
checks to the treasurer once a month. It is possible that a check could take a while to
clear. Of course, if you are concerned feel free to call Sandy (484-5484) for information.
On another topic, I’m happy to tell you that the Library Board has selected the book for
this year’s “Camarillo Reads.” It is Songs of Willow Frost by Jamie Ford. If you have
read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, then you are familiar with Jamie Ford’s
writing. Songs of Willow Frost is a story set in Depression-era Seattle. William Eng, a
Chinese American boy has lived in a Seattle orphanage for several years. He has
been told that his mother has died. On the day the orphanage takes the children to
the theatre William sees an actress, Willow Frost, and believes that she is his mother.
The book chronicles William’s attempts to meet her and much more.
Jamie Ford will be here to do a presentation (funded by the Friends) at 2:00 p.m. on
Sunday, March 30. I heard him speak in Thousand Oaks a few years ago and he is a
great speaker. I hope you will mark your calendars and plan on attending that Sunday’s program. There will be other “Camarillo Reads” events during the month of
March. You can check the Camarillo Library website (www.camarillolibrary.org) for
more information.
