About Pahalgam
Pahalgam, a notified area committee, is a town in the Anantnag district. Located in the Indian
state of Jammu and Kashmir, Pahalgam is perched at an elevation of 2,740 metres above sea
level. Pahalgam is the base camp for the pilgrimage to Amarnath and is about 95 kilometres
from Srinagar.
Pahalgam is a situated at the junction of Aru and Sheshnag Rivers. Aru flows into the Kolahoi
Glacier beyond Lidderwat and Sheshnag from glaciers along the great Himalayas. The
destination initially was a shepherd village and was under the rule of the Mughals during the
medieval times.
After the rule of the Mughal Empire, Kashmir was conquered by local Hindu rulers. The town
remained independent even during the British era and later on was a part of independent India.
The culture of the town can be witnessed in its food habits, clothes and religious beliefs. The
diversity of the region is visible in the languages spoken, which include Urdu, Hindi, Kashmiri
and English.
The weather conditions in the destination are pleasant and mild in summers from April to June,
while winters from November to February are cold and experience heavy snowfall. July and
August see a huge crowd of pilgrims thronging Amarnath, the abode of Lord Shiva, as
Pahalgam is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra. The best time to visit Pahalgam is during
the months of mid-April to mid-November.

Featured review about Pahalgam
It was adventurous Pahalgam trip
"It was my birthday on October 24, 2011 and I woke up early at our hotel and got ready for the
next day's trip. Our sub-group never thought it would be this lucky. We were to go up to the
Lidder Valley at Pehelgam, which is a 9 km uphill climb after a 2-hour drive from our hotel. We
were 3 families.
We climbed uphill, despite my just recovering from the bone dislocation I had on my left toe.
After sometime, I could not bear it, because my shoe finally gave in (the sole came off from it en
route due to continuous usage of the shoes for more than 11 years) and all of us took a horseride each for about 10 minutes. The horses would not listen and the horsemen were quarrelling
amongst themselves, resulting in the horses trying to jump downhill and all of us getting down
from the horses forcefully. We walked it up the rest of the distance, taking breaks in between,
whenever possible, but never quit. We even helped each other out to reach the destination. I
felt God also gave power and strength to my recovering toe, so that I could walk on to reach my
Page 2/13
destination. While going downhill, the road was quite muddy. I even managed to photograph the
same from the lorry itself. The lorry nearly went to the edge of a cliff, while making a turn en
route. We all got scared, but the lorry driver reassured us that his life is also in danger every
single moment. We were finally glad when we mounted down from the huge lorry downhill and
we all heaved a sigh of relief. After some time, I went to a shoe-store at Kashmir and got myself
a nice new pair of sandals and wrapped my worn off shoes in a plastic bag and dropped it in the
trash can of my hotel, since it was not in a condition I could show to anyone. This was the lifechanging experience I had at Kashmir. It made me realize the presence of God when I needed
Him the most.
All of us wanted to see the so-called 'Mini Switzerland' uphill. The best part was that we had
never used any mountaineering equipment, but we still got there. It wasn't much of a sight
uphill, but we did get to hold rabbits and sheep. My tour group members felt it is a little birthday
gift for me, though I was not quite satisfied with the amount of time we spent there after
spending hours climbing the mountain. It was quite muddy in some parts of Lidder Valley
though and we were caught in knee-deep mud at times there. When we wanted to return
downhill before it got dark, we realized that it was already late. We could not see anything from
above and our heads started spinning. I luckily noticed a truck and a lorry. The truck driver
refused to give us a ride back, but a good Samaritan (the lorry driver), who was carrying heavy
logs of timber, took us in for a ride back downhill. We were all relieved. We thanked the Lord
Almighty for big mercies shown to us when we were truly in need. I shouted out happily, 'This is
my second life and a Birthday present from God himself. He helped us get back home when we
were wondering how we could get back downhill in the dark '." - Sharmila Shankar,
Mumbai, 3 weeks ago
Great destination to be with your beloved
"A fantastic place to stay with someone who you want to stay with. Great sightseeing. It's even
good and vibrant atmosphere which makes you feel comfortable and romantic. You can
experience the charm of nature and also make great memories with the scenic beauty of the
valley. Well sited hotels give you a better stay experience and exotic food. You would definitely
like to visit the place again, as I also feel. Trekkers would be even more delightful for the
beautiful trekking destinations." - Suresh Chand, Adari, 2 months ago
Pahalgam the Switzerland of India
"Pahalgam is the most popular Valley and the glacier. A long stretch of meadows running for
kms. with the background of tall pine trees and the snow capped mountain ranges attracts the
film suitings and the crazy nature lovers. The other sight seeing places are Chandanwadi, a
beautiful glacier which should not be missed, Auro valley with different plantations, Betab valley
etc. Every Indian who is a nature lover must visit this place.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The restaurant like Paradise etc have both veg and non veg
North Indian and Kashmiri food. Horse riding across the pine forest and deep valley with
running streams is an amazing exprience. The drive to Chandanwadi across Betab valley is
simply awsome with snow spread over the valley across the road.
Page 3/13
Activities & things to do: A long walk across pine forest, meadows is a thrilling experience. The
meadows have rare, plants, trees with flowers
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: We need to hire a vehicle from Jammu to
Patnitop and then to Pahalgam. This Journey will be enchanting with beautiful valleys,
waterfalls, snowcapped mountain ranges etc." - Parveen Taj, Bangalore, Jun 1, 2011
A Heavenly Experience!!
"A cool relief in summers, Pahalgam is nested in the Lidder valley and is a mere 2-hr journey
from Srinagar. It is more famous as a base camp for Amarnath yatris, who flock the region in
July. The days are sunny yet pleasant, coz the cool winds from the Himalayas and the Lidder
river flow all the time. But the evenings, owing to the lack of sunlight and the warmth it brings,
are chilly. But then, they sleep early here and get up late, hehe!! Enjoy!
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The hotels offer good food in their restaurants. Roadside
shacks provide for tea and snacks, but for those who want hygiene, I would suggest the hotel
food and bottled water.
Sight-seeing is not much except for Chandanwari, Lavender park (famous for the flowers), Deer
park (where one can find deer, bears, and tigers).
There's not much to shop for except the Pashmina shawls and other winter wear. These, along
with local craft articles are on sale in the marketplace.
Activities & things to do: Don't miss the river rafting, it's too good. Just take with you a change of
clothes coz you are gonna get drenched!! And don't worry about safety, as you are not
supposed to row; a trained professional does that. It's just a joy-ride; so just follow the safety
instructions they give, and enjoy!
The pony ride is a great way of mixing with the locals as I discovered. The owner of the horse
told a lot about the place that I didn't know.
Pahalgam is for those laid-back tourists who prefer not to be much adventurous, except for the
river rafting, which we found to be great fun.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: At the Srinagar airport, there are pre-paid taxis
charging Rs. 1200-1500 (non-AC/AC). From there it's a hassle-free journey devoid of ghats on
good roads through scenic locations and saffron fields. You can also buy the world-famous
Kashmiri saffron and cricket bats made from Kashmiri willow it on your way. Ask your cab-driver
for a good deal. The food served at dhabas is not good, just stop for tea/ snacks. Pack a
sweater or two, yeah, even the summers are cold by the rest of India standards! A windsheeter
would be best to fight the chilly winds, especially if you wanna go out in the evenings or night.
Normal clothing will suffice for the day or if you stay indoors. Bargain with the shawl-wallahs and
horsemen. They tend fix exorbitant prices. During river-rafting, you have to sign an undertaking
saying that you are participating at your own risk. Please do not take kids below 10 as they are
not covered in the undertaking." - Ankita, Nagpur, May 29, 2011
