Darren Haley - Ducks Unlimited Canada
Darren
Haley
Artist of the Year
B
Born in 1960, Calgary artist Darren Haley spends hours observing the habitat and behaviour of his wildlife
subjects. This commitment to capturing wildlife in its natural state is apparent in the fine details of his incredibly
realistic creations.
Haley’s Alpine Hunter was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art Portfolio. This limited
edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this program
supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Alpine Hunter
Geographically inspired by the great Canadian Rockies standing right outside his door, Haley created this piece using the mountains
as a framework.
“Most pieces stem from a background I’ve viewed,” Haley says. “Whether it’s a mountain setting, a church window or something
as simple as a fence, I imagine what would be in that setting had I come at a different time.”
Having painted wolves several times before, Haley imagined Alpine Hunter – a stately grey wolf perusing the rocky terrain.
Additional work by Darren Haley
This is the second time Darren Haley has been selected as DUC’s Artist of the Year. In 2000, he was chosen for his piece Ladies First.
Additionally, many other prints including Soft Shadows, Passing 60, Full House, The Stunning Rock, Jewel and Parkland Winter
have been recognized in previous DUC National Art Portfolios.

Derek C. Wicks
D
Derek C. Wicks discovered the enchanting world of art and nature at the young age of six. Through a junior
artist’s kit and the encouragement of his family, Wicks developed his artistic talent and has since become
an internationally celebrated wildlife artist.
As a child he would paint pictures of nature that he saw in National Geographic, learning to capture fine
details and manipulate subtle elements such as light and shadow. Today, his award-winning work is displayed
in private, corporate and public collections worldwide.
Wicks’ painting Northern Vigil was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art Portfolio.
This limited edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this
program supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Northern Vigil
“White-tailed deer are an everyday sighting in my neck of the woods,” says Wicks. “And, every sighting still thrills me. Most of the
sightings are usually the fleeting kind, where all I get in my photograph is the trademark white tail and rump. This painting captures
that perfect moment when both man and nature share a glance of fascination with one another. It is in these few moments of
experience that my passion and inspiration for art and nature are born.”
Additional work by Derek C. Wicks
Wicks is a dedicated conservationist and no stranger to Ducks Unlimited Canada. Along with Northern Vigil, his painting Winter Barn
was also selected to join the 2009 National Art Portfolio. Additionally, his pieces Setting Out and Fishing the Shallows were recognized
in previous years’ collections. The latter received honours as DUC’s Artist of the Year in 2007.

Michael Pape
S
Self-taught, Toronto-born artist Michael Pape finds inspiration for his paintings all around him. His powerful
paintings allow viewers to experience sights and scenes not typically observed in everyday life.
In an effort to capture this realism and purity, Pape devotes months, and sometimes even more than a year,
to complete his paintings. Pape is committed to creating fine art paintings, finished in acrylic or a combination
of mediums that will touch and enrich the lives of viewers.
Pape’s painting Ghost of a Chance was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art Portfolio.
This limited edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this
program supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Ghost of a Chance
“Native to the central Asian mountains, the majestic and ghostly snow leopard is a rare sight,” says Pape. “Without more education
and stricter laws to protect them, they only have a ‘ghost of a chance’ to survive.”
Additional work by Michael Pape
If you’re inspired by Michael Pape’s realistic interpretation of wildlife art, consider exploring his paintings Beautiful Dreamer, Out of
the Mist and Through the Storm. These pieces were recognized by Ducks Unlimited Canada in previous National Art Portfolios.

Arlene Collins
W
When she was a child growing up in the country, Arlene Collins’ love for art was fostered while watching
wildlife and admiring the landscapes around her.
After more than a decade of painting, her first passion continues to be wildlife and nature scenes. Using her
preferred medium of oils, she captures her subjects with precise control and true, bold colour. Much of her
inspiration stems from watching wildlife in her area. With a camera in hand, Collins usually finds her subjects
close to home.
Now, with eight small grandchildren in her life, Collins is inspired in new and refreshing ways. Capturing the
innocence and joy of childhood has become a focus in her work and is an important element of personal expression.
Collins’ painting Big Brother was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art Portfolio.
This limited edition series is only available through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this
program supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Big Brother
“I painted this silhouette of a little girl riding a horse led by an older boy with a fishing rod in his hand. It reminded me of when my
own daughters went fishing and did many other boyish things with their older brother,” Collins says. “He didn’t seem to mind,
and to this day he likes to watch over his little sisters.”
Additional work by Arlene Collins
Along with Big Brother, another painting by Arlene Collins entitled Through the Mist was selected to join DUC’s 2009 National Art
Portfolio. Additionally, her painting Maple Nell was chosen in a previous year’s collection.

Denis Mayer Jr.
A
At a young age, British Columbia painter Denis Mayer Jr. began devoting his life to art. He would spend
countless hours training and working with his father to hone his artistic talents. Today, Mayer is recognized
as an inspiring and extremely talented young artist.
First working with charcoal to draw barns, still lifes and a variety of other subjects, he later began exploring

This limited edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this
program supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Still of the Night
Still of the Night was inspired by one of Mayer’s favourite spots – Jasper, Alta.
“Jasper holds such fond memories for me,” says Mayer. “On a calm summer evening, a still lake reflects a true duplicate of the
beautiful mountains surrounding it. A campfire along the edge of the lake sheds its warmth and sets a magical ambience to
such a still night.”
Additional work by Denis Mayer Jr.
Along with Still of the Night, another painting by Denis Mayer Jr. entitled Beauty at Rest was selected to join DUC’s 2009 National

to be surrounded by a natural world of beauty and discovery.
In what has been a whirlwind career as a professional artist, Dodge’s first show was in 2001. Since then, she
has achieved much recognition internationally and has quickly become an acclaimed nature artist.
Primarily painting in pastel, Dodge is perhaps best known for her ongoing focus on birds, which are often
combined inspirationally with traditional Christian hymns. She has also garnered much popularity for a series
of pastel paintings portraying breathtaking views of the Northern Hemisphere constellations. While she
paints in her private studio at home, nature’s inspiration continually beckons at her door.
Dodge’s painting Southern Migration was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art Portfolio.
This limited edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this
program supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Southern Migration
“The Big Dipper is usually the first star pattern amateur astronomers learn to identify,” says Dodge. “It is actually part of the
constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. Its position shifts during the year, from close to the horizon in fall to nearly overhead in spring.
Southern Migration depicts a traditional fall migration as waterfowl begin the long journey south with Ursa Major at their backs.”
Additional work by Kelly Dodge
Part of her constellation series, Dodge’s paintings Twilight Constellations and The Northern Cross capture the same physical and
spiritual beauty as Southern Migration and were previously selected to be part of Ducks Unlimited Canada’s National Art Portfolios.

Al Bergin
A
A mainly self-taught artist, Al Bergin finds inspiration every day in his routine rural surroundings. His
paintings, done in acrylics, are hauntingly real and seem to reveal the soul of the subject matter. His art
reaches out and invites the viewer to engage and participate in the scene.
Bergin began his artistic career in the late 1980s as a high-relief wood carver and several years later
turned his focus solely on painting. His first paintings were done on hard river stone, but he now paints
exclusively on masonite and has received local, national and international recognition for his work.
Bergin’s Stepping Stones was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art Portfolio. This limited
edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this program
supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Stepping Stones
This painting depicts a Nova Scotia seaside fishing inlet located about five kilometres from the world-famous Peggy’s Cove.
“I have visited this area many times,” says Bergin. “It is actually quite vast beyond the wharf. However, when the fog rolls in, so
does the magic for me. This beautiful expansive inlet transforms into a cosy secluded haven where large stepping stones, a fishing
shack, wharf and dory become the only focus, and I feel somehow protected from the great North Atlantic.”

thanks to the importation of moose pairs brought from northern New Brunswick,” says Collins.
Additional work by Arlene Collins
Along with Through the Mist, another painting by Arlene Collins entitled Big Brother was selected to join DUC’s 2009 National Art Portfolio.

Patrice Wolput
P
Patrice Wolput was born in Sabrevois, an agricultural town some 50 kilometres from Montreal. Growing up
on his parents’ farm, he soon manifested a love of nature and a talent for drawing.
After earning a degree in Fine Arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal, Wolput explored a number of
different avenues including working as a scene painter for cinema. His fascination with nature eventually
led him to devote himself entirely to wildlife painting. The intimate link between an animal and its habitat
is particularly intriguing to him, and his heightened and intuitive sense of this is obvious in his work.
Wolput’s painting Searching For was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art Portfolio.
This limited edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this
program supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and education programs.
The Inspiration for Searching For
“It was the beginning of winter and I was walking in the forest just behind my home when I saw these ruffed grouse,” says Wolput.
“I ran back home to get my camera, and luckily for me they were still there when I came back. I took close-ups of the birds in
different positions, but it took several sketches back in the studio before I was satisfied with the piece.”
Additional work by Patrice Wolput
Another piece from Wolput’s celebrated collection has been recognized by Ducks Unlimited Canada. His painting Rendezvous was
selected as part of a previous National Art Portfolio and named DUC’s Artist of the Year in 1999.

The Inspiration for Beauty at Rest
“When creating this magnificent Siberian tiger, I wanted to capture the soft texture of the fur while keeping the essence of a
majestic beast at rest,” says Mayer. “Large cats can appear to be resting comfortably; however, they can spring at any given
moment. Because this creature is truly a beauty to me, I call it Beauty at Rest.”

to the strong westerly winds, the horse’s blowing mane and tail echo the stormy clouds. The shapes of the mountains are repeated
in the form of his strong back, and the warmth of his coat is juxtaposed against the cool colours of winter.”

Phillip Crowe
T
The most significant influence in Phillip Crowe’s life and artistic career has been the exposure to nature
during his early years. His father and grandfather were avid outdoorsmen, and often let him tag along
during their adventures.
While he was growing up, Crowe’s mother encouraged him to make the most of his creative talents and
pursue art at the post-secondary level. After graduating, Crowe painted what he knew best: the outdoors
and wildlife. As demand for his work grew, so did his range of subject matter. As someone concerned
about the health of the environment, Crowe believes that it is our responsibility to protect the outdoors
and valuable natural habitat for our future generations.
Crowe’s painting First Light was selected to join Ducks Unlimited’s 2009 Art Portfolio. This limited edition
series is available only through Ducks Unlimited fundraising initiatives. The money raised through this

Bruce
K.
Lawes
2009 Stamp and Print
B
Bruce K. Lawes is an internationally acclaimed artist who resides in Toronto. Lawes has a keen interest in
travel and attributes much of his artistic success to the wide range of experiences he has gained abroad.
Although he enjoys variety in his work, wildlife themes have remained his favourite since childhood.
He maintains a close relationship with our natural world and lives by his philosopy: “An artist who paints
our natural world must continually experience all its wonders before he may truly capture them on canvas.”
The unique knowledge Lawes has acquired over his lifetime is exemplified within his work. His paintings
portray more than a moment in time – they transport you right to the location where he sat sketching
and connecting with the wildlife.
Lawes’ stamp and print, Blues on Green, was selected to join Ducks Unlimited Canada’s 2009 National Art
Portfolio. This limited edition series is available only through DUC fundraising initiatives. The money raised
through this program supports DUC’s on-the-ground wetland conservation work, scientific research and
