NorthWestern Energy would like to bring to everyone’s attention that the power pole at the shooting range
outside of Gardiner IS NOT A TARGET. NWE has already had to replace the old pole because it actually fell
down because of people shooting it! The new pole that was just installed already has bullet holes in it. If this
continues NWE will have to close the area down for target practicing. Please use your own targets and not the
power pole!

VOTE NO on I-161
This initiative is a job killer for Montana! Outfitting brings in many millions of dollars to the state of
Montana, and this initiative is meant to put outfitters out of business! Before the outfitter sponsored licenses, outfitting was at best a starve to death-business. Now, a hunter that wants to plan a vacation a
year or two in advance, can book with an outfitter and know that he has a license. Can you imagine planning a vacation, where you will spend approximately $10,000 and not being able to plan it until March, of
that year? (Believe me it won’t happen !) One of our typical hunters spends $1100 on a license which goes
for block management to allow Montana sportsmen access to private land and wildlife conservation in
the state. Then, he or she travels here, either by road on plane. Spends at least a few nights in motels,
buying meals, gas, gifts for his family, taxidermy and meat processing. (This is all out of state money,
keeping Montana small businesses employing Montanans!) Then, we as outfitters, not only pay our
guides, which trickles into the economy, but we buy trucks, trailers, maintenance, tires, horses, mules,
tack, groceries, gas, feed, hay, and retail items too numerous to mention. We do our part to keep the
Montana economy ticking along, and as we all know, it is not easy to make a living in Montana! We live
and work here because we love it. Montana Chamber says to vote NO, NRA says to vote NO, Rocky
Mountain Elk Foundation says to vote NO, Montana Sportsmen United says to vote NO, Montana
Stock growers say to vote NO and these are just a few! Please do you part to keep Montanans working .
We are our best asset!

Clarence Douglas Johnson, 54 died early
Wednesday morning, October 20, 2010,
at his home of natural causes. Clarence
was taken suddenly from us, and he will
be sorely missed by all who loved his
special charm. He grew up in the woods, and was an accomplished trapper and hunter. He always lived life on
his own terms and cared nothing for material items. School came easy to Clarence and when he graduated, he
dreamed of going to Alaska and becoming a pilot. He accomplished both of these goals and in the late 70’s
owned his own Cessna 172. He was one of the original elk horn buyers and sent hundreds of tons of horns to
Japan and Korea. He guided many an elk and sheep hunter, and was able to captivate and entertain people from
all walks of life. Clarence could build or fix anything, but his passion was building with logs. The highlight of
Clarence’s life were children! Although he never married or had children of his own, he was an exceptional uncle, not only to his own nieces and nephews, but to hundreds of other kids over the years, that he took hunting,
riding, or snowmobiling. His smiling face was seen all over the community, and he always had time to help
someone in need, or to share an amusing story. He will be missed by many and never, ever forgotten. Clarence
was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Vernon and Kathryn (Davis) Johnson; his brothers Earl (Carol)
Johnson, Bill Johnson, sisters; Flora (Don) Cameron, Verna (Jack) Blackburn, Gloria Olson and Frances Taylor. Surviving are his sister, Charlotte, Brothers; Warren (Susan), Ralph and Lloyd Johnson, all of Jardine. Vern
(Barb) Adkins of Eatonville WA, Sonny (Loretta) and Tom (Martha) Adkins of Gardiner, Jack Adkins of
Tucker, GA; Ron Adkins of Billings, Mike (Maggie) Adkins of Old Chico and brother-in-law, Wendell Olson of
Gardiner, plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, including Wayne and Gary Dolsman. Cremation has
taken place and memorial services will be held in the Jardine Cemetery, Saturday Oct. 30 at 1pm. Immediately
following will be a coffee/potluck and a celebration of Clarence’s life at Warren Johnson’s house. Clarence was
a large man, with a tremendously large heart, and his kindness to all will be reminisced for many generations.
Much to our chagrin, the Big Man upstairs must have needed Clarence’s company, more than we did.
Northside Park Adds Finishing Touches to Phase 1 of the Project
Final touches to Phase 1 of the Northside Park and Soccer Fields Project are being completed this week. In addition to the 22 evergreen trees – Ponderosa Pine, Colorado Blue Spruce and Austrian Pine – that were planted this summer, 26 deciduous trees, including varieties such as Poplars, Red Maples, Burr Oaks, Ash and Flowering Crab-apples, have been installed. On Friday, October 15th,
members of the Livingston Rotary Club helped plant one of the final trees to be installed, a Crabapple. With the assistance of the
Rotary’s $1500 tree sponsorship, the Northside Park and Soccer Fields project is that much closer to fulfilling its motto “People,
Parks and Pathways”.
Phase 1 of the construction for NSPSF – which includes over 7.5 acres of new green space and grass, the south parking lot, a cement
pathway along the west side, over 50 trees, picnic tables, benches and allowance for the placement of two soccer fields – is now complete. A capital campaign is now in full force to raise the $600,000 -$700,000 needed for Phase 2, which includes over 7.5 more acres
of park and green space development, more trees, picnic tables and benches, a pathway that traverses the park, room for a third soccer field, the west parking lot and site preparation for a support building and east parking lot. All of this completes the goal for converting the 18 acres of city land into park space. Area residents are encouraged to go to the Park and see for themselves how NSPSF
will be a wonderful asset to the Livingston community as a whole. While the pathway is open for use, the grass areas are at a critical
growth stage and people are asked to refrain from walking on the grass until the Park officially opens in August 2011.
The NSPSF Project is a collaborative effort between the City of Livingston and LYSA. In August 2011 and after the Grand Opening,
the Park will be accessible to everyone. For more information about the NSPSF Project visit www.livingstonyouthsoccer.org or contact Jeff Dickerson at (406) 220-3011 or [email protected]. You can also follow the Park progress on Facebook at

MALE GRIZZLY BEAR CAPTURED AT GARDINER
GARBAGE COLLECTION SITE AND EUTHANIZED
BOZEMAN—Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks biologists recently captured a male grizzly bear at the Gardiner garbage collection site. The bear
was later euthanized. The 8-10 year old bear, which weighed more than 500 pounds, was captured on Oct. 11. Beginning in late Sept., the bear
was daily tearing down portions of the ten foot high chain link fence to access garbage.
FWP Bear Management Specialist Kevin Frey said the male bear was known to officials. For several years biologists had used various aversive
conditioning methods to deter it from residential areas, garbage, orchards, and gardens in and near Gardiner.
This September biologists set up electric fences in five different locations in an attempt to deter the animal, which traveled up and down the river
corridor trying to get unnatural foods at various residences. The bear had tried unsuccessfully to get garbage from bear-resistant container. The
bear was a potential danger to people who were dumping garbage at night at the collection site through a walk-in access.
The bear was transported to Bozeman where biologists held it for two days in an attempt to determine if it was responsible for the collection site
break-ins. While it was held biologists determined its overall body condition was excellent.
“Unfortunately, by tearing down the fence at the collection site and scattering garbage, other bears were being lured to the site,” said Frey. “A
temporary electric fence was constructed and we are monitoring to keep other bears out until they den for the winter and permanent fence repair
can happen.”
A joint decision was made by FWP and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to euthanize the bear based on the nature of the ongoing incidents
over several years and the fact that there were no locations in the Greater Yellowstone area where this garbage-prone bear could be relocated.
“Due to its size and health, this bear was capable of making a living anywhere in the ecosystem, but it chose to seek out unnatural foods in Gardiner,” said Frey. “Grizzly bear management history has shown that bears conditioned to human foods and those that damage property continue
these behaviors.”
“Unfortunately, this bear would likely have continued to seek out garbage in the ecosystem and would have become more bold and aggressive in
its efforts to obtain unnatural foods near people,” Frey added.
Learn how to help avoid conflicts with bears by minimizing food attractants such as garbage, apples, bird feeders, grills, and pet food. For more
information, go to FWP’s Be Bear Aware webpage at http://fwp.mt.gov/wildthings/livingWithWildlife/beBearAware/.
Myth: If you carry bear spray, you’re safe from grizzly attacks.
Reality: Bear spray is just another tool for the backcountry.
If you know how to use it, it could help you in a bear encounter.
Myth: A gun is a better defense against bears than bear spray.
Reality: A recent study found bear spay was effective in 94%
of incidents with wild brown and black bear—a higher
percentage than in gun defense.
“Efficacy of Bear Spray Deterrent in Alaska,”
2008 by Smith, Herraro, Debruyn, and Wilder.
The best defense around bears? Being alert and respectful.
Elk Hunters:
Consider carrying bear-spray with you when you hunt. Bear spray creates a wide barrier between you and the bear. Bear spray
sends the bear away, so you don’t have to shoot it.
Dress your carcasses away from gut piles.
Keep an eye out for bears and make noise as you work on a carcass.
Leave a note to other hunters if you have to leave a carcass in the back country and return later for it.
When you return to a carcass, approach slowly, looking for bears. Call out to scare off bears. Grizzlies and black bears generally
move away from human voices.
Black bear hunters:
Please, refresh your black bear/grizzly I.D. skills. (take this bear ID test to gauge your skills:
http:// fwp.mt.gov/bearid/default.html)
Thank you for keeping our area safe for hunters and bears.
