PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome back to Term One of 2015 at U3A North Gold Coast!
I hope you will enjoy the term ahead participating in some of the new classes we have on offer
plus continuing to gain pleasure from those classes you regularly attend.
I would also encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and apply to take part in something
quite different from the wide variety of classes on offer. Have you considered singing with the Choir,
keeping your grey cells stimulated by learning German, playing Table Tennis or Pétanque? Join one of the
groups such as Dining Out or Learning Thru Culture which combine social activities with learning. The
choice is yours; make sure you get the most out of your membership!
Your badge will be available for you to collect in our office from the 27th of January, please make
sure you do collect yours. Last year forty five were unclaimed, this is a waste of members’ funds, please
make sure this doesn't happen again in 2015.
I would like to welcome the many new members who have recently joined our U3A and I look
forward to meeting with you at the new members function later this term, however if you have any
feedback (good or bad) or queries please do not hesitate to contact me either by phone or email.
I would like to welcome the new Tutors who have joined us this term - Anja Ward, Christine Pham,
Robert Page, Ron Marshall, Ann Jurrjens and returning to tutor with us Astrid Pernisi. Farewell and a
special thank you to Poppy Cullen our French Beginners Tutor who has found employment in Brisbane,
and unfortunately is unable to continue tutoring with us. Poppy was a popular tutor and I know will be
missed by all of those who were fortunate to be one of her pupils.
A special thank you to the following members who have worked with me during the holiday break
- Heather Viney, Erika Walker, Margaret Wilson, Joan Dabbs, Barbara Hudson, Maureen Cooper, Victoria
Fenton, Chris Wood, Carol Chambers, Linda Crook, Lyn Hutton, Evan Evans, Brad Horrocks and Gary
Spicer. These members have worked during the holiday ensuring that everything is ready for you when
you return on the 27th of January.

COURSE 210: GREAT THINKERS AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS
The course Great Thinkers and Social Movements continues in 2015, again with a focus on the
interplay of history, philosophy and biography in major social movements.
I have chosen to start the year by looking at the American Civil War (1861-1865), that took place
about 100 years after the American Revolution. This theme will take us until the end of the first semester.
It is generally assumed that the American Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery. Was this really
the case? And was the Civil War necessary to bring about the end of slavery in the USA? What kind of
person was Abraham Lincoln, the President who was central to the Civil War? And how realistic is the
movie Gone with the Wind, that Civil War epic we are all familiar with? These are just some of the
questions that will entertain us in first semester.
In 2015 the course will run twice a month during term time. Active participation of class members
in giving brief talks is assumed. All are welcome to enrol. The main theme for the second half of the year
has not yet been decided, and depends to some extent on the interest of class members who enrol at the
beginning of the year.

BOOK CLUB NEWS
Our first session for the year will take place on February 19 in the Seachange Classroom, 1.15pm to 3.15pm.
Our novel is George Eliot’s Middlemarch. One critic stated:
“The novel is set in in a large English village in the early 1830’s and the whole of life is in it – romance
and marriage, science and politics, the coming industrial revolution, the movement for reform, the
increasing role of the press and wide-ranging argument about religion.”
New members who would like a book list for our monthly novels please contact me [email protected]

Learning Thru Culture
On 21st December a group of 20 members went on a coach tour to
see the Gold Coast Christmas Lights. The last house we visited at Southport,
was next day voted winner of the Council Award and deservedly so. The
owners told us that it takes 3 months to install the over 3,000 lights. The
feedback which I received from the members was very positive and I look
forward to organising the event again this year.
On Wednesday 14th January seven members of the group went by
train to see Queensland Museum’s exhibition of
“UNDRESSED, 350 Years of Underwear in Fashion” which was
Ron, Jan & Lotte on tour
brought to Brisbane from the Victoria And Albert Museum in
London. The exhibition featured more than 80 highlights of
the era, including Queen Victoria’s drawers, iron corsetry from the 1700s, bustles, men’s underwear,
night shirts, beautiful negligées to corsets worn in the late 1800s and early 1900s to modern day bras
& knickers.
We then went to the City Town Hall where we enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Shingle Inn
before going into the City Hall Museum to see the private collection of “Costumes
from the Golden Age of Hollywood”. It was free and a real trip down memory lane.
The gowns were from movies of 1920s through to 1960s and featured costumes
made for Gloria Swanson, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Ester Williams, Katherine
Hepburn just to name a few. The creativity and sewing was exquisite. There were
also showing scenes from some of the movies that the costumes were worn in.
After a very enjoyable day we caught the train back to Helensvale, arriving there, as they say “tired
but happy”.
For information regarding future outings contact Jan Marshall on 5594 0358
Come and join our friendly PÉTANQUE group for a game on the 1st, 3rd and 5th
Friday at 3.00 PM in the park at the HUB. It is a fun and enjoyable social activity.
Pétanque is played in a friendly sociable manner and open to all members who
enjoy a little exercise with a lot of fun and frivolity during the game, followed by
refreshments and nibbles. Membership will be limited to 40, so sign up early.
Pétanque is an easy game to play and easy to learn.
Friendly competition games will be arranged during the year and at years end the
best and fairest player will win the prestigious “Kevin Viney –Perpetual Trophy “.
Jim MacFarlane was recipient of the 2014 year honours. All equipment is supplied,
but you can bring your own Boules if you wish. The event will be on regardless of
the weather. We will have expert tutors explain the history and the finer points of
the game in case it rains.

U3A Network Qld & U3A Asia Pacific Alliance International

I am delighted to report that registrations are coming in from all over the world. Interestingly also three
academics from different Universities have registered. Of course the bulk of registrations are from around
Queensland with several delegates from each U3A in Cairns, Townsville, Hervey Bay, a large contingent from
Toowoomba and North Gold Coast who have already booked. Every day brings a new email from members from
around Queensland pledging their presence.
To date there are 11 exhibitors stands each with valuable information for members. The Gala dinner with gourmet
catering by Epicure unfortunately has restricted seating.....so don't miss out, do register as soon as possible.
For all the latest information on speakers and much more please go to the website www.u3aqldconference.org.

Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR)
Dear Members,
Have you booked your place? If not, do so now!
 Ever wondered why you have to fill out a new form every time you see another doctor?
 Do you know that it takes time for a new doctor or hospital to get your past information from different
places?
 You need to update each doctor you see about new medications that may have been prescribed by
someone else or test results that they not be aware of.
Australia's personally controlled electronic health record (PCEHR) system is a free and user friendly tool that
permits you to securely gather, store, manage and share your health information. PCEHR was developed by the
Australian Federal Government and is a safe and secure framework.
If you have never used a computer or are only a beginner you are welcome to attend this workshop. Reza will assist
you.
Light refreshments will be served and on completion of the workshop. Each participant will receive a small gift.
Where:
The U3A Classroom, at the Hub, Billington Street, Labrador.
When:
Saturday 9am - 10.30am or 11am - 12.30pm
Dates:
7th, 14th, 21st, 28th February and 7th March
If you have friends or family over the age of 50 who would be interested in this workshop they are very welcome to
attend.

ROLL UP, ROLL UP !!!!
One of our volunteer areas is the CLEANING ROSTER. Cleaners work in pairs and the total time volunteered is
usually 1 hour or less, once a term. The cleaning areas are U3A Office, Committee Room (next door) and U3A
Classroom. One person dusts and one person vacuums. NO HEAVY WORK. Think how fulfilled you will feel
volunteering to keep the areas neat and tidy for U3A Members. Don’t delay. Take this step today. We need you.
