National Anthems
The Star-Spangled Banner
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hail’d
at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the
perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly
streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting
in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was
still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the
brave?
O Canada!
O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

We are here to build Bridges
to Harmony by bringing the
Joy of Singing to Pittsburgh
-- a celebration of music for
everyone. We’ll see just how
broad that joy can be in the wideranging kinds of performers and
performances in our shows and
contests. You’ll see it in our
vastly expanded Harmony University classes, with
more than 100 sessions covering the art, business, and
fun of barbershop.
Most importantly, you’ll see it every time four (or
eight, or fifteen) people open their mouths to share
that joy directly, heart to heart, ear to ear. We’re
celebrating the music of Pittsburgh’s favorite son,
Stephen Foster, this week, with the release of a new
songbook and performances by your Fantasy Quartet
and Director. This week also premieres the longawaited Barberpole Cat Songbook Vol. II, another
landmark in the joy of casual singing. Don’t spend so
much time listening that you miss out on the singing!
Permission is granted to leave your seat sometime!
Every time we build bridges between hearts, between
generations, between people of all backgrounds, we
make a difference in people’s lives. We’re inviting all
of Pittsburgh to sing with us, so look for people with
puzzled expressions, and invite them to sing a few
notes with you.
Marty Monson, Society Executive Director, CEO

Don Fuson’s Welcome
Welcome to Pittsburgh, a.k.a. “The
Steel City”, home of The Terrible
Towels AND the most outstanding
collection of a cappella barbershop
singers on the planet! Linda and
I welcome you and look forward
to meeting new friends, renewing
acquaintances with old ones (forgive
me if I cheat a glance at your name
tag!), and having an opportunity to
“Share Your Music” with one and all.
We have an outstanding set of contestants this year in the
collegiate quartet, quartet, and chorus contests, so cheer
for them all even as you root the most for your favorites.
Join with me in welcoming the first-time quartets that
have worked so hard to gain their place on the big stage.
Welcome back the choruses that are returning to the chorus
contest. Enjoy the singing and appreciate the work that
our quartets and choruses have made in order to bring us
world-class harmonies throughout the week.
The Convention Team from the multiple Pittsburgh
chapters has done an excellent job of collaborating to
make sure things run as smoothly as possible. Pittsburgh
has some outstanding points of view, points of interest,
and wonderful liquid and solid refreshments to entertain
every taste. Explore the city during your visit here this
week and share what you find with others so we can all
discover what it has to offer. And to all our singers, we
encourage you to seek out performance opportunities for
the community during the convention.
But most importantly, soak in our friendships and give
back to the communities when you return home, sharing
the joy of preparing and performing for those around you.
That is what makes us the best! Share Your Music!
Don Fuson, Society President

Determining Relative Rank
Music
Judges in this category adjudicate the musical elements in the performance: melody,
harmony, range, and tessitura; tempo and rhythm and meter; construction and form;
and embellishments. They judge the extent to which the musical performance displays the hallmarks of the barbershop style, and the degree to which the musical
performance demonstrates an artistic sensitivity to the music’s primary theme.
Presentation
These judges evaluate how effectively a performer brings the song to life. They
respond to both the visual and vocal aspects of the presentation, and evaluate the
interaction of these aspects in creating the image of the song, as well as everything
about the performance that contributes to emotional impact upon the audience.
Singing
Judges in this category evaluate the degree to which the performer achieves artistic
singing in the barbershop style: the production of vibrant, rich, resonant, technically
accurate, and highly skilled sound, created both by the individual singer’s use of
good vocal techniques, and by the ensemble’s process of tuning, balancing, unity of
sound, and precision. They listen for a sense of precise intonation, a feeling of fullness or expansion of sound, a perception of a high degree of vocal skill, a high level
of unity and consistency throughout the performance, and a freedom from apparent
effort that allows the full communication of the lyric and song.
Each judge may award up to 100 points per song.

What is AHSOW?
Woodshedding is how barbershop began on
a rooftop in Tulsa. The Ancient Harmonious
Society of Woodshedders (AHSOW) was formed
in 1977 to preserve the skill of woodshedding
as an art form within the Barbershop Harmony
Society. Woodshedding is three individual voices
(tenor, baritone, and bass) creating barbershop
harmonies by ear to a lead melody, without any
written arrangement. Today, nearly 1,000 AHSOW
members have demonstrated their proficiency
at discovering and creating harmonies by ear in
barbershop quartets. Every AHSOW member stands
ready to welcome all barbershop singers who wish
to participate in this fulfilling activity.
We’re open every day from 9am until Midnight
in the Westin - Washington. Come see us!
