Welcome back to a new year at Carey. I hope this holiday period has given you the opportunity to be refreshed, and
enjoy time with family and friends. The new year is a great time to make new starts or to continue to keep progressing
with a new approach. So as I start this year, in the new role of Principal at William Carey, it is with great hope for our
school community. Having taught on staff at Carey for twenty years, I have seen many students grow up through the
school and benefit from the mission of our school. Students having the opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ
and gain an excellent education, within a caring school community has been the fundamental fabric of our school. As a
school, we will be continuing to promote and develop excellence in these areas.
I would like to congratulate our HSC students on a wonderful set of results. Our students achieved 21 band 6 results.
(90% or more) across 13 subject areas and 165 band 5 results (80% or more). Our school was included on the SMH
Merit List for high performance in the Extension 1 and Extension 2 Mathematics courses. All our students need to be
acknowledged for their performance and approach to the HSC. In particular we should note some of our highest ATAR
performers, including Jasneil S (97.7), Bradley S (97.5), Nathaniel W (97.15), Vince R (94.95), Jerome S (94.7), Ethan
T (94.25) and Mary Z (93.95). These are very significant results and demonstrate the effectiveness of the cooperative
approach this group took towards their studies. Our thoughts and prayers are with all our 2015 Year 12 students as they
commence a new and exciting phase of life.
The staff returned last week for the first semester staff development. This week is an opportunity for professional
development, curriculum planning and theological input. The main theological focus has been the continuation of
studies set to enable staff to work through the school’s ‘Statement of Faith’. These group studies have provided a great
opportunity for staff to discuss and understand the content of this important document.
Other highlights of the week have included the launch of the school’s Wellbeing Policy. This whole school policy has been
the result of many years of work, by a wide range of people, led by the Deputy Principal of Welfare, Mr Brad Milburn. I
would like to thank this team of people for their hard work.
As a staff, we have also engaged in a Professional Growth program. This year-long program focuses on development and
improvement in teaching practice. Teachers will be setting goals, participating in suitable professional training, collecting
information about the impact of their teaching, and receiving feedback from peers and mentors. The goal of this
program is to provide a structure in which teachers can intentionally evaluate and develop their teaching practice.
During the week prior to school starting, a small number of staff and I attended the funeral of an ex-student, who died
unexpectedly while travelling on holidays. The funeral was attended by many past Carey students and their families, who
joined with the family in mourning this immense loss. His sudden passing has deeply impacted many people.
Events such as these, cause us to stop and consider, what can we be certain of in life, and in what can we place our
hope. In responding to these questions, the Bible points us to God’s promise of the offer of salvation in Jesus Christ and
the promise of eternal life for those who trust in him. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament speaks clearly of the
certainty of God’s promises.
People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.
Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he
confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we
who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the
soul, firm and secure. Hebrews 6:16-19
With the knowledge of the certainty of the hope that is offered in the gospel, I want to wish all our students and their
families an engaging and rewarding school year in 2016.
Keith McMullen

From your
High School Deputy Principals
Welcome back to William Carey for 2016. We wish you every blessing as you join with us again this year in the
nurture and education of your children.
Meet the Teacher Nights will occur in either Week 2 or 3 of this term, depending on your child’s year group. Please
plan to attend this night and meet with your child's subject teachers face to face. Planning for a successful year
for your son or daughter can begin at this point. Remember to book your appointments using PTO as soon as
possible, if you have not already done so. As a new (trial) initiative, we will be introducing the opportunity for Year
7 parents (only) to also meet their child’s Pastoral Care teacher in a small group session on the night. These small
group sessions will be held at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm in addition to the other interviews you may book. These group
meetings are planned to last for fifteen minutes. No bookings are required for the parents of Year 7 students to
attend either of these informal sessions. The school’s ICT staff will also be on hand at both evenings to assist families
with any Edumate related enquires.
Stepping into Senior School (Year 10) and the VET Information Night (Year 11 VET students) will also be incorporated
as part of the running of the respective Meet the Teacher Nights. These breakout sessions both occur from 7:00 pm –
8:00 pm and while your attendance is required, booking is not required to be a part of these presentations.
On Monday 29th February 2016 we will be presenting a Parent Seminar on “Navigating Teenage Depression”. This
presentation will be delivered by a trained Black Dog Institute presenter who has personal experience of a mood
disorder or of caring for a loved one. This informative, theoretical presentation will assist in your understanding of
dealing with a mental illness, while the cleverly overlayed personal narrative will open your eyes and give to you a
whole new perspective on this issue. Topics that will be covered include:
•
The pressures faced by young people today
•
Signs / symptoms of depression and bipolar disorder in young people
•
Identification of early warning signs
•
When and where to seek help
•
Practical strategies for offering support and communicating with a young person you are worried about
•
Strategies for building personal resilience
Our second seminar on the topic “Body Confident Children and Teens” is on Monday 14th March 2016. Please plan to
attend.

From your
Primary School Deputy Principal
Welcome to 2016 at William Carey. I would like to extend a warm welcome to families joining us this year; it is
great to have you in the William Carey community. If you have any questions or concerns as your children settle
in, please come and see me.
Staff have spent a busy week working on new programs and units of work, based on the Australian Curriculum.
English and Maths are under control, and we are well under way with both Science and History. Geography is
the next one on the radar. There are some great changes in the new curriculum and we are looking forward to
developing new units of work over the year. We also continued looking at the school’s updated Statement of
Faith, which was a challenging and encouraging activity to undertake.
As usual, the term starts with numerous activities (see dates below). Of particular note is the Primary
Swimming Carnival, which is on Wednesday 3rd February. Students in Years 3 to 6 will have received a note
about this (as part of the big sport note), requesting swimming ability and transport information. Please return
this promptly. Students in Year 2 are invited to attend, only if they are squad swimmers. If this is the case,
please contact Mr Burgess ASAP to discuss. As always, parents are welcome to attend.
The sport note for Years 3 to 6 also contains information about other sporting events for 2016, as well as
general permission for students to participate in IPSSO. Please read this carefully, and return all signed sections
as soon as possible.
The Primary Information Evening is being held on Tuesday 2nd February. This is a great opportunity for parents
(no children, please) to find out what is happening at William Carey this year. There will be some whole school
information, including an Edumate update, as well as an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and find out
more specific information. You will also get to hear from our new Principal, Mr McMullen.
Term 1 also sees camps for Years 5 and 6. Detailed information about each of these will be sent home well in
advance of the camps. Basic information about each camp, including parent involvement, will be discussed
during grade time, at the Primary Information Evening. Year Four camp is changing this year, and that will also
be explained at Primary Information Evening.
It would be a shame if your child lost some of their nice, new uniform so early in the year. Please label
everything, either with iron on labels, or clearly in permanent texta. We want to get lost property back to your
child but it is very difficult when items are unlabelled.

H.S. SPORT 2016
Welcome to another year of sport at
WCCS!
From students participating on a Tuesday afternoon to
competing in national swimming, at WCCS we love to
see students involved in sport at all levels. Below is an
outline of the main tiers of sport and some important
dates for your calendars.
1. School Based Sport
This is run on Tuesday afternoons during periods 6
and 7. Students can choose to trial for a MISA team,
which is an interschool competition amongst local
schools, or participate in school sport. For school
sport, students will spend two terms participating in a
house competition where students are divided into
teams and compete in a round robin competition that
contributes house points towards the overall champion
house. For the other two terms students will be able to
put in preferences for the sport they would like to do
from a wide variety of activities including cross fitness,
court sports and field games, as well as many other
options.
2. Southern Metropolitan Zone
The pathway through to the major CSSA carnivals
(swimming and athletics) and various gala days is
through competition at a zone level. Students are
selected for zone teams based on trials at school or
performance at school carnivals.
3. CSSA
Christian Schools Sports Association (CSSA) is a state
wide Christian Schools competition and the next level
up from zone. Students are selected for competition at
this level either as a school or zone based team.
There will also be opportunities throughout the year to
trial for CSSA teams to represent CSSA at Combined
Independent Schools Carnivals.
4. CIS
Combined Independent Schools (CIS) is a highly
competitive state-wide competition for independent
schools. Some sports require students to be
individually nominated to trial for CIS teams, whereas
others require qualification through CSSA. Selection
trials for CIS are only open to high level players.
CSSA and CIS Trials - Individual
Nominations
On the following page is a list of CIS and CSSA
event, nomination and trial dates. If you are
interested in being nominated to attend the trials
for any of these sports please see Mrs James in
J1 before the closing date. Please note that late
entries will not be accepted.
The cost of nomination for CIS trials is
$22.25. NB: WCCS covers the cost of all school
based and CSSA activities, but not CIS. If your
son/daughter would like to trial for CIS the
entrance fee needs to be paid to the Uniform
Shop before the nomination will be submitted.
Further information about trials and CIS events
and the full calendar can be found on the CIS
website:
http://www.aisnsw.edu.au/Services/CIS/Pages/defaul

CSSA information and the full calendar can be
found on the CSSA website:

An app for CSSA which contains easy access to
all CSSA sport is also available at the app store.

Child minding available.
School Opal Card
From Term 1 2016, eligible students within the Opal network will be able to travel to and from
school with the new School Opal card.
Most students who already have a 2015 school student travel pass will have their School Opal card
automatically issued and sent to their school.
Some students, including new applicants and students changing school or campuses, updating
their personal details, or going from Year 2 to 3 or Year 6 to 7 who have already applied or
who need to apply, will have their School Opal cards posted to their home address. Most
School Opal cards should be received in the first two weeks of Term 1 2016.
Students who have been approved to travel on more than one operator or to more than one home
address, for example where there is shared parental responsibility, will only receive a single Opal
card.
School Opal cards sent to schools
Schools will receive a consignment of School Opal cards, by courier including:
 envelopes with a single personalised School Opal card for eligible students, sorted by
grade and last name
 a list of all Opal cards issued to the school to help with distribution.
Schools should contact 131 500 or [email protected] if they don’t receive
their cards within the first two weeks of Term 1, 2016.
Travelling in Term 1
School students will need to carry their School Opal card and tap on and off when travelling. A
grace period applies at the start of each new school year, where school students who have
been approved for SSTS travel can travel without a valid pass while new passes are being
issued. Students must be in school uniform or be able to provide evidence (such as a school ID
or school books) that they are travelling to or from school during this time.
To report a lost, stolen or damaged School Opal card, customers should phone 131 500 or visit
transportnsw.info/school-students
Ready for Term 1 travel
 Most School Opal cards will be delivered in the first two weeks of term one 2016 to home or
school
 School Opal cards sent to schools will be sorted by grade and surname
 Schools should only issue one School Opal card for each eligible student
 Schools should return any cards not issued to students to Transport for NSW two weeks after
they receive their cards
 Students should wait until school starts to update their travel details at
transportnsw.info/school-students
 Remember: a grace period applies at the start of the school year to enable time for passes

HOW DO I HELP
MY CHILD LEARN
FREE WORKSHOP TO READ?
As adults we don’t think about reading, we just do it! Many parents feel frustrated,
puzzled or anxious about how to best support their 4-7 year old learn to read.
At William Carey Christian School we value the partnership between home and
school as every child learns to read.
WCCS is holding a FREE workshop for parents, grandparents and early childhood
educators on the strategies to support a 4-7 year old’s journey towards fluent
reading.
Parents of WCCS Prep, Kindergarten and Year One students as well as interested
members of the community are invited to this workshop. Your child does not
have to attend WCCS to attend this free workshop.
Wednesday
February 17th
2016
Where: School auditorium at
William Carey Christian School.
RSVP: by Monday 15th February by emailing
[email protected] or calling the school
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm on 9608 2277 to book your seat.
This workshop will answer
questions such as:
•
•
•
•
•
What is the brain doing when we read?
How does school teach reading? What is
phonics? Sight words? A levelled reader?
Why is learning to read difficult for some
children?
What can we do to help them?
How can we support reading at home?
