The Japanese Maneki Neko is a frequent fixture
in local businesses – most often used to draw in
money.
According to Japanese legend, a cat saved a man
by beckoning him with his paw. After the man
moved toward the strange cat, the place he left
was immediately struck by lightning.
The Maneki Neko reminds us that paying
attention to cats makes good sense!

our interest in supporting the humane
treatment of all animals, not only pets.
In fact, when the Hawaiian Humane
Society was first established more than
a century ago, in addition to caring
for orphaned children and unwed
mothers, much of our efforts were
directed at helping work animals such
as horses, donkeys, oxen and water
buffalo. Today, these animals are still
an important part of our mission.
President Obama recently announced
a full prohibition of the slaughter of
downed cattle for beef – including the
torture and mistreatment of cows by
forcing them to stand.
This is a huge victory for animal
protection in our nation. People who
eat beef and are animal lovers want to
know that cattle live and die humanely.
Undercover investigations have documented sick cows being abused and
mishandled
in order to get
them on their
feet so that they
were eligible for
slaughter.
In 2003, Washington State
reported that

The Hawaiian, Kauai, Maui and Hawaii Island humane
societies thank our supporters for helping to spearhead
landmark legislation that will protect pets in domestic
violence cases. HB1512 has passed unanimously in both
the House and Senate. Once signed by the Governor, this
law will require a family court judge to issue a temporary
restraining order to include family pets.
Legislatures across the nation are introducing initiatives
to include family pets in domestic violence protective
orders, primarily due to the public’s increased awareness
that animal cruelty is a part of family violence.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is
at work to officially put a stop to nonambulatory cattle being mishandled.
The Humane Society rescued two dogs in
March that were abandoned in a toilet in
Crane Park in Kaimuki. The siblings were
fostered by staff to address health issues
until they were ready for adoption. Jarmayne
Rojas and Albert Makanani Jr. of Makiki
adopted both so that they could remain
together forever!
You supported a recent rescue of 7 dogs trapped and starving in a Halawa condo. The owner who was serving time in
a correctional facility had entrusted their care to a friend.
Their desperate barking and the smell of feces and urine
coming from the condo alerted neighbors. Humane Society
investigator Keoni Vaughn raced to the scene and found the
dogs nearly dead. Keoni visited the owner in prison to secure
rights to the animals. The animals received life saving veterinarian care, were rehabilitated for six months in foster care
and have since found homes through adoption services.

Without this kind of protection, victims of domestic violence often remain
in violent households out of fear for
the safety of their pet. Between 18 and
48 percent of battered women report
that they delayed leaving abusive situations out of fear for their pet’s safety.
Up to 75 percent of domestic violence
victims report that their partners
threatened or killed family pets.
“For years, we have long recognized
the link between animal abuse and human violence. Recent cases highlighted
in the media have clearly demonstrated the need to protect animals in
domestic violence cases,” said Pamela
Burns, President & CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society. “Now we are able
to work hand-in-hand with domestic
violence agencies to provide protection
and safety to both victims and their
pets.”
With this law in place, domestic violence agencies will now have another
tool to get more victims out of their
violent relationships and into the safe
havens they need.
Hawaii follows a growing trend of
states throughout the country that
have introduced pets in protective
order legislation. California, Colorado
and New York are among the states
that have these laws in place.

Two plead guilty to theft and
killing of pet dog
On May 6, before Judge Randal Lee,
two former maintenance workers from
Moanalua Golf Club pled guilty to
first-degree animal cruelty. This case
is the first to be tried under the felony
animal cruelty law that was signed into
law in 2007 by Governor Linda Lingle.

1995 admissions.
On average, 67 animals (22 dogs/45
cats) were admitted each day to the
Humane Society in 2008. That’s a 35%
decrease since 1975 when 103 animals
were admitted daily.
Spay & Neuter On the Rise. Since
1975, over 140,000 sterilizations (including cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea
pigs) have been performed at the
Humane Society, representing a 529%
increase.
Nearly 37,000 feral cats have been sterilized through the Feral Cat Sterilization program since 1994, representing
an increase of 140%. These sterilizations are funded entirely by donations.
The Humane Society’s commitment to
sterilization has dramatically helped
to reduce the number of homeless
animals in the community.
People-Pet Reunions. Nearly 13,000
animals have been reunited with their
owners through microchips since
1996.
More Downturns. From 1993 to
2007, cat euthanizations decreased by
31%. Dog euthanizations declined by
33% after 2000. The primary reason
why dogs are euthanized is behavioral
problems followed by sickness and
injuries. The Humane Society is working towards ending euthanasia of all
healthy, adoptable animals.
Adoption Rates. In 2007, roughly 3
cats and 5 dogs were adopted per 1,000
Oahu residents. That’s about 6,000
adoptions a year. There has not been a
significant change in cat or dog adoptions since 1993.
The Humane Society goals are to reduce pet overpopulation and improve
quality of life and care of all animals
through education and advocacy. The
Moiliili location serves as a hub for animals in transition and offers insights
into the state of animal welfare for Hawaii. The study findings indicate that
the overall number of homeless pets is
on the decline. That’s good news!
LACES WE LOVE
PETCO in Kapolei
The Humane Society gives PETCO two tails up as our
pick for “places we love.” The pet supply store, which does
not sell dogs and cats for profit, has partnered with the
Humane Society for pet adoptions. Cats and rabbits are
available daily and dog adoptions are held two weekends
a month. Last year, PETCO’s national network of stores
helped to find families for more than 2.5 million pets.
PETCO offers a wide selection of high-quality pet food,
supplies, treats and toys and includes a full-service
grooming, dog training, pet photography and more.
“For a long time, we’ve wanted to have a presence on the
Leeward side,” says Rigo Neira, Director of Operations
at the Hawaiian Humane Society. “This partnership with
PETCO is just what we were hoping for. We’re sure to
help more animals find loving families thanks to
PETCO’s commitment to ending overpopulation through
adoption.”

June 26 is Take Your Pet to Work Day
Pets are climbing the corporate ladder.
June 26 is Take Your Pet to Work Day
and Hickam Air Force Base, KSSK and
Aloha Petroleum are inviting their employees to bring their pets to work and
honor this national day to celebrate pet
ownership and companionship.
Many enlightened businesses believe
that taking your pets to work is possible and may bolster happiness and
productivity in the workplace.
There’s still time for your office to get
involved.
Do an office check. Check with
management and co-workers to see if
anyone is allergic, afraid of, or opposed
to you bringing your pet to work for
this special day.
Prepare your work space. Remove
poisonous plants, hide electrical cords
and wires and secure toxic items such
as permanent markers.
Groom your pet before heading to
the office. Be sure that shots are up-todate and pets are bathed, brushed and
flea free. Aggressive or overly shy pets
are best to stay at home.
Prepare a doggie bag if you’re bringing a dog. Include food, treats, bowls,
toys, leash, paper
towels and cleanup bags. If you are
routinely in and out
of your work space,
consider bringing a
portable kennel for
your dog’s comfort.
Let interaction
happen naturally. Pet lovers
will make
themselves
known so
don’t let your
pet wander freely.
Have an exit strategy. While some
pets will enjoy a day on the job, others
may not, so plan an exit strategy. Have
a friend or family member available
to pick up your pet or be prepared to
return home yourself.
If bringing your pet to work isn’t
appropriate, you can still
participate in the national
event. Bring a photo of your pet
instead, coordinate a donation
drive, or collect items needed by
the Humane Society. The Society
is also available to be at your
workplace to conduct giveaways,
make presentations and/or set
up an informational booth.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals
uncovers cruel truth about “local” pork labels
Another issue we’ve been tracking and
supporting involves the sale of pork
products labeled “Island Produced” or
“Made in Hawaii.” Few are aware that the
label means locally-slaughtered but not
locally raised.
Instead, more than 13,000 pigs from the
mainland made a long journey by land
and sea to Oahu annually. Once the
animals de-boarded the ship, they
went straight to a Hawaii slaughterhouse so they could bear the “Island
Produced” label. Pigs were especially
ill-suited for this journey, suffering from
10
motion sickness, stress from overcrowding and susceptibility to disease.
A two-year investigation by the WSPA
revealed on video that these conditions
at sea were inhumane. Pigs stood in
their own waste in overcrowded spaces,
endured temperatures that exceeded 100
degrees and waited long periods for food.
Some even died due to the harsh travel
and living conditions.
The WSPA’s advocacy and heroic efforts
to help these animals halted the import
of most of these pigs as of April 2008.
Students win prizes for Be Kind To Animals Contest
Kids with a gift for art and words won big for entries in
the Humane Society’s Be Kind To Animals Contest.
Those in grades 7 to 12 were invited to share a story
about a pet. Kindergarten through 6th grade students
created posters depiciting kindness to animals.
Prizes were as high as $75 for both the art and essay
contests in each age group category.

4 ways to ensure a pet-safe 4th of July
At the Humane Society, we frequently
get asked if we’re against fireworks.
We’re not anti-fireworks, we’re pro
pet safety. Here are four simple ways
to keep pets safe during the Independence Day celebration.
ID your pet – Make sure your pet is
microchipped and your contact information is filed and current with the
Humane Society. Even if you’re registered with a national database, you
need to ensure that
your best phone numbers and
current address are on file locally.
Collars and tags are essential

Keep pets indoors – The
noise, smoke and flames can
be very upsetting to animals
so keep them safely contained indoors, preferably in
a quiet room.
Plan ahead – Teach your
family (and your pet sitter)
what to do if your pet gets
lost. That includes filing a lost
report with the Humane
Society immediately. Don’t
wait for a cat to be gone for a few
days. Be sure to canvass the neighborhood with a current photo of
your pet and visit the Humane
Society in person to search for
your animal.
Look out for lost pets – If
you lost your pet or see a
stray animal, call the
Humane Society immediately
to file a report. If the stray animal is friendly and approachable and there is no visible
form of identification, you can
go to a nearby veterinarian’s
office to scan for a microchip.
You can also bring the lost animal to the Hawaiian Humane
Society or call 356-2250 to
arrange for a pick-up.

Hickam Salutes the Animals
Hickam’s Animal Relief Fund raised $2,500 through collecting HI-5 cans and bottles with $500 also given to the
Feral Cat Sterilization Program.
Brownies Throw in the Towel for the Animals
Led by Sammy Noda and Paige Izutsu, Brownie Troop 464
collected towels for the Humane Society. Clean, towels in good
condition are used to groom animals, provide soft bedding and
used post-surgery.
Quick Fix for Overpopulation
