EMV Chip Cards Coming for Debit and Credit Cards
T
he U.S. is transitioning from
familiar magnetic stripe technology
to what are known as smart chip cards.
Chip cards offer increased security
protections that can help in preventing
some cases of fraud. Smart chip cards
are already widely used in other areas
of the world including Europe, Canada
and Mexico. Now the increased security
is coming to the U.S. to ensure that
widespread debit and credit card fraud
is more difficult for criminals.
Making the Switch
EFCU is shifting to this new, more
secure chip card technology starting in
October 2015. This will mean replacing
current cards with the new technology.
EFCU will provide this increased card
security as members’ debit and credit
cards come up for renewal.
The Basics of Smart Chips
Visit our website for updates, FAQs
and to view a video on how to use
chip cards at eglinfcu.org/chipcards.
Easy to use.
More secure.
Globally accepted.

ATM Safety Tips – Be Proactive
A
TMs today are equipped with all
manner of innovative technologies
to foil skimming crime – signal jammers,
card jitter devices, motion detectors, fascia
protectors and more. But there’s only
so much the industry can do to protect
consumers from crooks. And the fact
remains that cardholders are perhaps their
own best protection against skimming
fraud. Be an observant consumer and
look for signs of tampering before using
an ATM. Criminals tend to attach their
devices during times of low traffic,
including late at night and early in the
morning. When you use a card reader,
be on the lookout for anything that looks
scratched, loose, crooked or out-of-place.
Another way you can protect yourself
is by covering the PIN pad with your
hand when entering your PIN, so that
wandering eyes or a hidden camera
cannot record your PIN. These simple
actions on your part can save time and
hassle in trying to recover funds that
occur when a card is compromised.
