ON THE COVER: MEET ZERO!
Jack Skellington, Sally, Doctor Finklestein, Oogie Boogie,
and Zero (The “Nightmare Before Christmas” Kittens)
were born in June of 2015 and transferred to Purrfect
Pals by a local shelter after test results showed they
have the Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). Our sanctuary is
one of few which have the space and resources to care
for cats and kittens with FeLV. The Nightmare kittens
the litter lived past the age of one year, which is rare
for kitties who acquire the virus so young. Sadly, one
remaining four kittens, however, continue to thrive and
never fail to entertain visitors with their antics! Zero
is a sweet and VERY cuddly boy who will chirp at you
until you’re forced to drop everything and snuggle with
him. His sister, Sally, is the self-professed princess of
the group. You have to be careful when bending over in
the sanctuary because she won’t hesitate to jump up on
your shoulders!

PET FOOD COMPANY
Imagine a pet food that’s healthy, humanely raised, sustainably sourced, and environmentally
friendly. Open Farm is doing all those things and more: it’s also causing a paradigm shift in
how we view pet food.
Open Farm was created to provide pet food that’s produced in a way that respects the
environment and animal welfare while providing a delicious, nutritious meal for our pets. It’s
the only pet food on the market that’s Certified Humane – and animal welfare experts, pet
owners, and pet stores are all raving about Open Farm.
Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) – and its standard, Certified Humane – is heading
that paradigm shift. HFAC is a nonprofit that strives to improve the lives of farmed animals
by increasing consumer demand for humane, responsible farming practices. HFAC’s board
includes world-renowned animal behaviorist Temple Grandin, whose work revolutionized the
way that farmed animals are treated.
Animal welfare standards can be measured in both an animal’s behavior and in the meat that
they provide – and ensuring humane treatment for farmed animals provides a better life for
the animal and a better product for our pets.
“I’m a big proponent of guidelines for food safety and animal welfare,” Temple explained, “but
they have to be clear. If you can define something and measure it, then you can manage it.
Stress levels impact meat quality. A pig that’s had a sudden wave of stress during their last five
minutes of life” (such as when they’re approaching slaughter) “will have a white, watery meat.
That’s from the stress hormones coursing through them.”
Open Farm’s animal welfare policies include third party auditing of its farms. According to
Temple, this is one of the “three legs on the tripod” for successful supply-chain management.
“The farms can have their own internal audits, then you need third-party audits, and then you
need other random, independent audits to check those audits,” Temple explained. “You need
to find out: are the audits actually meeting your standards? Is my third party auditor actually
doing their job? We have outcome measures for animal welfare, but you need to make sure that
these are actually being examined correctly.”
Kristina added: “What’s not to love about a company that truly cares about not only the health
of your animal, but also the well being of all animals? Also, the fact that it’s sustainably sourced
and has a recycling program make it an easy favorite.
“The response from customers has been really great. Most people’s eyes widen in shock when
they learn that this is the only Certified Humane food. So much of the emphasis with other
foods is put into showcasing the healthy and natural qualities of the food that the treatment of
the animals gets overlooked. It really has been an eye opener for a lot of people.”
www.earthpet.net
Susan Moss, owner of All the Best Pet Care, stated: “All The Best is proud to sell Open Farm
Pet Foods. Open Farm has hit a resonant cord with our customers, who want to support ethical
practices and reduce animal suffering. Not only does it use exclusively third party Certified
Humane meats, but everything else that goes into the food is high quality and sustainably
sourced, including the packaging, which is fully recyclable. They have done a fantastic job of
creating foods that are both good for pets and good for the planet. Hats off to Open Farm!”
www.allthebestpetcare.com
Sam from Sam’s Cats & Dogs Naturally stated: “I’m a fan of new paradigms and looking at
quality and conditions for factory farm animals. A lot of customers wanted humane food for
their pets. There’s added value in providing a better environment for these animals. They have
grass to eat and sunlight. If you feed locally or raise them and grow them yourself, then you’ll
know the quality, and Open Farm allows you to do that. I’m excited about this product and I
like that Open Farm is pushing people in that direction.”
www.samscatsanddogs.com
Humane meat is healthier – and animals that eat humane meat are healthier, as well. It is
possible to balance your values and have the best possible quality ingredients and food for your
animals, too. Local pet store retailers and their customers have been impressed with Open Farm.
“As the owner of and buyer for Earth Pet, we try to find products that are not only healthy or
unique, but that also stand out for doing something good,” stated Kristina Bock. “Whether
it’s something that’s made locally, uses sustainable resources, is made from recycled products,
or just supports a good cause. It was an easy decision to bring in Open Farm as it fits these
criteria on many levels. Being Certified Humane is an important option to be able to offer our
customers because not only does it promote treating animals well, but it creates awareness, too.
And when people become aware, it inspires change. Hopefully others will begin to follow in
these footsteps.”
