FOREWORD FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR
Tan Sri Dato' Sri Prof. Ir. Dr.Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar, FASc
Universiti Teknologi MARA
I believe congratulations are in order to our Faculty of Music for its
conviction in keeping alive the love for traditional music among the
young, through the hosting of the International Gamelan &
Caklempong Festival 2015 or IGCF2015.
What is even more commendable is the faculty‘s commitment in
bringing together music communities from across the Malay Archipelago, hence provide invaluable
opportunities to strengthen relations and extend networking with regional citizens who share the same
heritage with us here in Malaysia, insofar as traditional music is concerned.Unlike the usual conference or
convention which involves adults—speakers as well as delegates— who engage in serious exchanges, a
music festival like IGCF features highly talented young musicians and the not-so-young, who come not
only to showcase expressive creativity and their love for music, but also to enjoy a wondrous musical
experience that soothes the ears and touches the heart. No doubt, they are just as serious about playing
well their role as presenters and participants, but there is a value-added element which manifests itself in
the rendition of traditional ensemble that never fails to entertain.
It certainly takes a lot of dedication and diligence on the part of the organisers, not only to house
musicians, many of whom would have travelled far to make it to the festival, but also to take stock of
logistics which would include taking care of highly prized musical equipment. Hence, it is only fitting that I
express my appreciation to the Faculty of Music and those from other departments in UiTM for the great
teamwork in ensuring the success of this event. Keep up the good work. Keep the music going. Keep on
playing the mesmerising sounds of gamelan and caklempong. Keep working towards becoming a leader in
the promotion of traditional music, this part of the world. Keep growing from strength to strength in
elevating the stature and status of music, native to the region, particularly reflective of the enriching and
unique tradition of the Malay communities across the Nusantara.
On that note, I wish all participants three days of fulfilling and enjoyable experience in the musical realm of
gamelan and caklempong. To guests of the country who are participating in the festival, I wish you a
pleasant stay in Malaysia, and a safe journey home.

MESSAGE FROM THE PROJECT DIRECTOR
Associcate Professor Dr. Shahanum Md. Shah
International Gamelan & Caklempong Festival 2015
Universiti Teknologi MARA
It is my pleasure to write a few words for this first ever UiTM
International Gamelan & Caklempong Festival 2015.
The Faculty of Music relentlessly envisages brochettes of ways
to educate its students and the public en route towards a deeper
understanding and appreciation of music. This festival, itself, is
tailored for this purpose. As all roads lead to Rome, all pleasures
are derived from education. It is an understanding, a discovery of sorts that enriches and develops
one‘s spectrum of the five human senses.
Indeed, if there were a sixth, it would be that of
education.
Following the success of the International Gamelan Festival 2014, this year we decided to add the
caklempong to the festival in our continuing effort to uphold traditional music. In this event, we
present gamelan and caklempong music at its effervescence performed by local and international
performers, thus creating a platform for musicians and composers to bring the best out of music
heritage and modernization.
The festival also provides an opportunity for music lovers to gather
and exchange ideas. The International Gamelan & Caklempong Festival 2015 will feature 29
groups from Malaysian schools, universities and community groups and our neighbouring
countries, Indonesia and Singapore.
This festival would not have been made possible if not for the commitment and dedication of all
those involved directly or indirectly in the festival. My heartfelt thanks and appreciation goes out to
the Dean and my organizing committee, both members of the faculty and students, who stood by
me every step of the way, on the journey to making this festival a success. To all participating
groups - terima kasih, thank you, matur nuwun, matur suksema -for sharing your music with us.
I am sure the audience and participants will bring a little, if not a lot, of wonderful music in their
hearts home.
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our Vice Chancellor, Rimbun Dahan for the loan of
the Balinese gamelan set, our sponsors and anyone I may have inadvertently missed. Lastly, a
special thank you to everyone in attendance tonight for your support and patronage.

A pleasant evening to all.
Faculty of Music UiTM
The Faculty of Music began as the Department of Music in 1984 and was situated
under the School of Art and Design. However, music has been a part of UiTM history
since 1980 when it was offered as an elective subject. Subsequently, the School of Art
and Design submitted a proposal to offer the Advanced Diploma in Music which was
equivalent to a General degree. This course was approved by the Ministry of Education
on June 21st 1983 and the first cohort of students entered in 1984 under the
Department of Music, School of Art and Design. UiTM was the first institution of higher
education in the country to offer a degree in music.
The Faculty of Music was established in June 2006. The faculty offers a variety of
music programmes at the Diploma, Bachelor and Graduate levels which focuses on
the development of academic competence, professional skills and critical and
creative abilities. The faculty aims to spearhead the advancement of music and music
education in Malaysia and on the international front through creative music
learning-teaching strategies and cutting-edge music research.

International Gamelan & Caklempong Festival
(IGCF) 2015
The International Gamelan & Caklempong Festival 2015 is a continuing effort by the Faculty of
Music, Universiti Teknologi MARA to uphold Malay traditional music. Having organized the
International Gamelan Festival 2014, this year we have expanded to include another genre of
traditional music, the caklempong.
The objective of this festival is to provide a platform for gamelan and caklempong groups to perform
and share their music as well as to collaborate and contribute to the development of the gamelan
and caklempong in Malaysia. The festival also provides an opportunity for composers to have their
music performed and music lovers to gather and exchange ideas.
The festival aims to highlight and expand on the variety of gamelan and caklempong music whether
traditional or contemporary on the national and global front. Through presentations and networking
opportunities, our Malaysian gamelan and caklempong groups will be able to broaden their
knowledge on the diversity of gamelan and caklempong music available.
This year‘s festival will feature 29 groups from Malaysian schools and universities and our
neighbouring countries, Indonesia and Singapore. International participating groups include Institut
Seni Indonesia Yogyakarta, Institut Seni Indonesia Surakarta, Universitas Sumatera Utara and
independent groups Gamelan Salukat, Bali and Gamelan Asmaradana, Singapore.

The Faculty of Music Gamelan Club was formed in 2010 with the intention of revitalizing
traditional Malay gamelan music as well as to create our own unique ethnic-contemporary

gamelan for this traditional form of music can have a new voice in the modern world.
Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shahanum Md. Shah, the group comprises students from all levels
and departments in the faculty. Since its formation, the group has performed for the Faculty
of Music‘s Composers Series (2010), the 17th Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival (2012), Festival

elements of Sarawak Ethnic‘s music with gamelan. The composition portrays the
development of gamelan music in Sarawak. It is also a musical adaptation of Sarawak ethnic
customs, usually performed during the ritual or cultural customs of locals in Sarawak. During
the ritual, the combination of percussions, gongs and vocal will be performed in act of
worship to show their respect to the Gods or Divine in the region. This composition begins
with Borneo ethnic brass ensembles and vocal recital which known as ―bebiaw‖ or quatrain
in the Iban language.

Manunggaling Rasa group was established for the purpose of International Gamelan &
Caklempong Festival 2015, organized by the Faculty of Music Universiti Teknologi MARA,
Malaysia. The members of the group are lecturers and students from the Ethnomusicology
Department, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Surakarta. The group has prepared one
composition entitled ―Pelangi‖ which literally means ―rainbow.‖. Since the two institutions,
UiTM, Malaysia and ISI Surakarta has the MoU, it allows us to participate in the festival and
to introduce the variety of cultures, as well as ethnic music of nusantara to the world.
The background of this composition is the diversity of the cultures, particularly the music
which exists in Indonesia. Unity in diversity is the most important word to express it. The
composer is trying to express the phenomenon through the different kinds of music, which
are the materials of study in the Department of Ethnomusicology. The composition is based
on different music, such as Balinese, Javanese (Central, Western, and Eastern), and
western Sumatran (Minang). The instruments are from Javanese gamelan, Talempong
(Minang), and the voice.

of the establishment of this team is to enable students to gain experiences in playing the traditional
musical instrument, caklempong. This team is officially trained by the school‘s music teacher and
has received guidance from The Department of Arts and Culture, Negeri Sembilan. After a few
years of practices, this team is eventually is able to participate in performance both at the school
and national levels. Besides, this team has won numerous competitions and among them are the

2014, 3rd runner-up in the Malay Gamelan Music Competition and the SBP Cak Lempong
competition 2/2012 and 3rd runner-up for Music Expression Audition 2013.
Through the establishment of this caklempong team, SMAP Labu is highly expected to become a
sought after institution for nurturing creative, innovative and excellent students. These skills will
later be favorable in the development planning and in the effort to bring up traditional music as a
glorious form of education.
Mudik Arau portrays the desperation to have love through the long wait of a ―minang‖ girl towards
her old lover who had been travelling to other land. The girl, however, still loves him regardless of
whether he is wealthy or poor, or has even had a child of his own. This song was composed by
Ajis Sutan Sati.
Ayam Den Lapeh, rearranged by Abdul Hamid, is a traditional song that is very well-known not only
in Minang, but also in Malaysia and Vietnam. This song had been arranged in various versions.
The whole song portrays the feeling of losing something precious and valuable, which is pictured
by a rooster. In the old Minang tradition, the rooster is said to have been a luxurious asset and only
certain people were able to own it. The lyrics of this song still have the element of old poem
(―pantun‖) by emphasizing the pattern of the vocal sound at the end of each lyric.
Tak Tun Tun Gemalai Jagung is usually sung in Minang language. The theme of this song is to be
loved and admired. Besides its function as a form of entertainment, this song is also made an
attempt to convey good massages and advice to the society.

Minangkabau Nusantara Music Practical Ensamble course, taught by North Sumatran‘s famous
musician who has a strong background in Malay and Minangkabau music, Mr. Zulalinur. This

particularly the music of North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The group is managed by: the Dean

The performance is entitled ―Minangkabau Gariniak in North Sumatra‖ in which there are 3
compositions:
“Sulap Tangan Berduri”
“Talagoi Biru,” and
“Kamanakan Mamak.”
The ―Sulap Tangan Berduri‖ expresses the Minangkabau Sumatran philosophy, who believe that
“the highest degree of creativity of Allah are the humans, particularly the khalifah who is also the
leader of nature.‖ However, in reality, humans live in the hubuddunya (the lowest-level world), who
2
ironically, is also the destroyer of mother nature.
The ―Talago Biru‖ is a musical composition that depicts the panorama of Talago Biro (―Blue Lake‖)
whose water is blue in color, and portrays the lake‘s beautiful scenary during the day.
The ―Kamanakan Mamak‖ illustrates the Minangkabau matrilineal society. The piece includes
interlocking techniques which represents the clan and the three main groups within a society:
ulama (religious leaders), adat (custom leaders), and government.

This performance includes 3 sections from a contemporary piece by Dewa Alit, Tanah Sedang Bicara (the Land is Talking). These 3 sections are; Kuasa Tanah (the Power of Land),
Yeh Ngetel (Dripping Water) and Bongol (Deaf). Bali has lost its cultural orientation. So much
of the land, one of the most important foundations for its culture‘s sustainability, has been
sold to outsiders. Balinese people nowadays are trapped in the puddle of pop culture. This
composition is dedicated to reminding for ourselves that we should be aware of the
