The Nor-Vise
Concept & System
The concept behind the Nor-Vise Fly tying System
is to postion the hook shank on the centerline of
rotation and then turn the hook rather than wrap
hand over hand around the hook. A thread post,
aligned with the center of rotation, permits
material to be "turned" onto the hook without the
tying thread being wrapped on at the same time.
An adjustable friction clamp will position the hook
at any angle and a sliding rear hub will lock it every
90˚. Rather than simply rotate, the Nor-Vise is
designed to spin, which is the key factor and why
you can tie better flies faster.

The Nor-Vise is designed around a sturdy
anodized aluminium frame and matching thread
post bolted securely to a tying board or table.
The Nor-Vise will accommodate
a variety of jaw conversions
that can be quickly and
easily mounted onto the
arbor. Although it is
possible to tie nearly any
size, type or style of fly
with any of these jaw
conversions, each is
intended to fit a
specific need.
The Norlander Automatic Bobbin
The Automatic Bobbin is a key element in the
Nor-Vise Fly Tying System. Rotating the hook with
a hanging bobbin causes thread to be wrapped
around it, however, if the thread is positioned in
front (on the centerline of the shank) it will not wrap
around it. This will allow materials to be "turned
onto the hook", easier, more precisely as well as
faster than doing it hand over hand. The problem is
bringing the bobbin back to tie off without
manually winding it up every time. The Automatic
Bobbin solves this by instantly winding itself up to
the perfect tying point.
The Norlander Automatic Bobbin is a very innovative
patented design. A stainless steel spring/clutch mechanism is
housed in a precision machined aluminum hub.
l
l Interchangeable machined aluminum spools press onto this
hub, held in place by friction from a "O"ring. Thses spools will
hold from 50 to 500 yards of your favorite fly tying thread.
Thread can be transferred onto the aluminum spools using a
spooling arbor with an electric drill or with the Nor-Vise itself.
l
Thread is guided to the perfect tying point through a fine
ceramic tube.
l
Thread tension is controlled by simply squeezing the bobbin
spool when tying, each turn of thread will then be exactly as
tight or as light as needed.
l
This unique bobbin can also be used with other vises to
improve thread control and production.

Tie Better Flies Faster
With The Revolutionary
Rotary Nor-Vise &
Automatic Bobbin!
Tie Better Flies Faster with the Right "Conversion"
The Nor-Vise Revolution
Developed by professional research engineer and fly
tier Norm Norlander, the Nor-Vise and Automatic
Bobbin are truly innovative tools.
Unlike other "rotary vises" that rotate only to
position the hook, the Nor-vise is designed to "spin"
the hook to apply material. With the hook shank held
in perfect alignment with the axis of rotation (on
centerline) it works like a lathe and provides for
better thread tension control and more precise
material placement.
Small In-Line Jaw Conversion
Fine Point Jaw Conversion
Likely to be the best choice for alll around
performance, the Small In-Line Jaws are capable of
handling any and all fly tying hooks. If the bulk of your
tying is for fresh water, or on size #2 and smaller
hooks, this is your best choice. Thousands of
Nor-Vises with this jaw conversion have been in use
for years and are proven to be exceptionally durable.
It is the one favored by most commercial fly tiers
where quality and productivity count.
For those who tie many of the very tiny or intricate
patterns, the Fine Point Jaw Conversion with its
angled and fine pointed jaws provide excellent hook
accessibility and work especially well for pinching
material onto the hook or tying around the bend. An
alignment indicator pin is provided which shows the
true rotary position (removed when tying) and is used
when adjustments are made to precisely align the hook
with the xact centerline of rotation.
Large In-Line Jaw Conversion
Tube Fly Conversion
Designed for those tiers who tie a lot of large flies,
this conversion can be used with very tiny hooks yet,
its real advantage is having a rock solid feel when
tying the big stuff. The large brass hub and more
massive jaws also develop more inertia for spinning
on large amounts of heavy materials. This is the
favorite design for most saltwater fly tiers retaining
the capability for quality and productivity that is
associated with tying on a Nor-Vise.
This Conversion is designed for fly tying on tubes
which are strung onto a leader normally with a small
short shanked hook. Very effective patterns especially
for large aggressive game fish can be created which
also cast quite well. The Nor-Vise Tube Fly conversion
comes with four mandrels and will accommodate a
wide range of tube materials, sizes and types. The
tubes can be rotated, spun and locked on perfect
rotational centerline and will not slip, turn or move.
Precision ball bearings and heavy brass hubs enable
the Nor-Vise to also work like a spinning wheel for
dubbing like you have never seen before. Perfectly
shaped and textured bodies, with all dubbing
materials, can be created, without wax, better, faster
and much easier than by any other method.
Lots of other body materials such as lead, wire,
tinsel, floss, chenille, plastics, etc. can also be "spun
on" very quickly and smoothly. Another unique
technique with the Nor-Vise is to use its spinning
capability to "reinforce" materials such as herl and
hackle with the working thread.
The Automatic Bobbin solves the problem of getting
the bobbin out of the way, yet instantly having it
right back towhere it is needed. Holding the thread
in alignment with the hook shank (on the Thread
Post) the vise may be rotated or spun to wrap on
materials without adding additional thread to the
hook.
Like any new technology, it takes a bit of practice to
master, but you can, and you will then wonder how
you ever did without it. The Nor-Vise and Automatic
Bobbin will indeed "Tie Better Flies Faster".
