Reaching Out to the Community
The CFDO works behind the scenes to bring oral health
education and supplies to the needy in the state. Throughout
the year, the CFDO heads into the community to provide oral
health awareness to underserved communities and organizations.
Some of the organizations they work with are Project Homeless
Connect, New Haven Men’s Homeless Shelter, New Reach
Inc., Branford Soup Kitchen, Veteran’s Hospital and Pipefitters
Local 777 Retirees Club. As the need continues to grow, the
CFDO will be there to lend a helping hand.

Message from the President
Dear Friends,
As we enter our 9th year, I thought
it would be nice to share a little history
about the Connecticut Mission of
Mercy (CTMOM).
It all began in 2004, when I was
President-Elect of the Connecticut
State Dental Association (CSDA).
I participated in a President-Elects’
Conference in Chicago. During the
conference, the President-Elect of
Kansas, showed a video about the
first Kansas MOM. It was held in the
middle of winter, in an aircraft hangar,
during a raging snow storm. We were
all mesmerized by what we witnessed and it was then that
I, along with the other five New England state’s PresidentElects’, thought it would be a great project to start in
our region. Upon returning home, I gathered additional
information from Kansas about the program. I followed up
with the other New England states about putting together
a joint program. At this time, the other states said it was
not a good time to initiate such a project and decided not
to participate. However, I was so moved by images of those
waiting in line for services and volunteers dedicated to
providing care, that I knew I wanted to bring this project
to Connecticut.
I showed the Kansas MOM video to the CSDA House
of Delegates and received a positive response. Once
I fulfilled my year as President, I devoted all of my time
making the project a reality in Connecticut. After viewing
the video, Dr. Ernest Spira, now Co-Chair, volunteered
to help out. I arranged a trip to Virginia where the MOM
project originated. Dr. Michael Perl, now Co-Chair, heard
I was going and was eager to join me. After participating
in that first project, we came home excited about making
it a reality in Connecticut. Dr. Perl volunteered to be the
primary fundraiser for the project and I would handle the
clinic piece.
We planned another trip to
Virginia. Dr. Spira and Ms. Carol
Dingeldey, CSDA Executive Director,
volunteered to accompany me. My
second experience was equal to the first
and we all couldn’t wait to get home
and start organizing our own clinic.
The next step was putting together
a small committee of volunteers
consisting of; Dr. Perl, Dr. Spira and
Ms. Dingeldey. Dr. Perl was already
hard at work knocking on doors
for donations. The committee put
together a presentation for the CSDA
Board asking for their support and approval to proceed
with the project. After receiving the Board’s blessing, Ms.
Dingeldey hired Ms. Josephine Bicknell as our Program
Director. We then formed a steering committee of hard
working dental professionals to help organize Connecticut’s
inaugural clinic. A date and venue for our first project was
selected and we were on our way.
Six months prior to our project, a team composed of Dr.
and Mrs. Spira, his staff, Dr. Steve Hershcopf, Ms. Dingeldey,
Ms. Bicknell, my assistant and I, went to Colorado to help
with their inaugural project. It was a learning experience for
us. We returned home enthusiastic and ready to run the very
first CTMOM. The rest is history.
In 2016, we will be holding our 10th clinic. We have
completed eight full-scale clinics and one mini clinic. Over
the years we have treated 15,732 patients and provided a
staggering $9,635,395 worth of free dental care.
It is our wish that soon there will not be a need for this
type of care, and that all of the citizens of our state will have
equal access to quality care no matter of race, ethnicity or
income.
Thank you all who have helped us throughout the years
by volunteering your time and expertise. It is because of you
that we are able to provide this love and care to those in
need. We couldn’t have done it without you!

WHY have a MiniMOM?
The CFDO has provided a great service to Connecticut
residents in major cities throughout our state. Lack of
available space for the 100 chair clinic has diminished
our efforts to serve smaller communities. After several
attempts to hold a full CTMOM clinic in the Southeast
area of the state, a mini clinic concept was formed. The
inaugural 30 chair MiniMOM clinic was held in East
Lyme High School on October 10-11, 2015.
WHAT was different?
WHAT was the same?
Targeted local advertising and assistance from the
New London Dental Society and area social service
organizations helped to keep our focus on the local
community. The size and arrangement of the clinic,
made the entire event continuously visible from any
vantage point. This allowed potential problems to be
handled while they were small. It also allowed for shared
enthusiasm and support of positive actions throughout
the entire clinic.
During this clinic, most patients were able to receive
more comprehensive care than is usual in a CTMOM.
Patients were fluidly and efficiently routed through the
clinic to achieve greater total dental health outcomes,
more akin to what they might receive in a private
practice setting than in a public health clinic.
Nearly all of the department leads from CTMOM
were involved in the planning and supervision of the
MiniMOM. We were impressed by the cooperation,
flexibility and tireless enthusiasm of ALL the
volunteers that made the MiniMOM a success. Those
who participated in every capacity should be highly
commended for their professional and humanitarian
contribution to improving the dental health of the
Southeast area of the state.
WHAT’s next?
No matter what size clinic is next, we anticipate
growth in leadership and continued enthusiasm to make
everyone smile. We offer a heartfelt THANK YOU to
everyone who volunteered their time and talent as well
as those who supported the operation financially. We
look forward to seeing all of you at our next clinic.

Why We Do It
On the Outside Looking In

Most activity at CTMOM occurs indoors,
but a few volunteers spend their time
outdoors helping with parking or assisting
patients waiting in the line. One would think
that volunteers outside have a different view
than volunteers working on the clinic floor.
Actually, they see the same thing. It is true
that those outdoors deal with cold, heat, black
flies, rain and, most recently, snow. All these
obstacles are fortunately, absent on the clinic
floor, but the view is somehow the same.
Parking volunteers arrive a little earlier
than everyone else hoping to direct volunteers
and patients to the appropriate places. It is dark as clinic
volunteers arrive. Confusion seems to be the order of the
day, but CTMOM volunteers surmount the challenge of
finding a parking space while maintaining remarkably
good humor. Cars of cheerful, scrub clad, enthusiastic
dentists, hygienists and assistants as well as community
volunteers are common at 5:00 a.m. No doubt, on any
other Friday or Saturday morning, they would not venture

out into the pre-dawn darkness. Even some
of our grumpier colleagues are a little more
cheerful. Perhaps they are anticipating a day
of good fellowship.
Good humor generally prevails in the line
of patients at the door. That’s remarkable
considering the temperature and length of
time that some wait. Some of the credit for
this must go to the volunteers who distribute
blankets, food, drinks and a little comfort.
These volunteers are the smiling face of
CTMOM for our patients. They help to set
the upbeat tone for the day with a welcoming
spirit.
The positive spirit of volunteers that pervades the clinic
floor has obviously spilled out the doors to the waiting
line and parking lots. The people are “the view” that is
the same whether one is standing inside or outside of the
CTMOM clinic. Hopefully CTMOM people carry this far
beyond the parking lot.

more than enough supplies and the facility
was beyond accommodating. Although
many Volunteer Lounge volunteers were
on hand Saturday, fewer attended Sunday.
That was not a problem whatsoever, as other
departments were more than willing to share
volunteers to fill the openings. FLEXIBILITY
at its BEST!
It was the teamwork that impressed me
with CTMOM from the start, and continues
to do so. I am proud to call myself a part of
this Amazing Team!
I have been attending and helping with
CTMOM for seven years now. It’s hard to
believe it’s been so many years, because I clearly
remember my first MOM. I was so impressed
with the organization, the preparation and
the strong team work of our dedicated leaders
that I just had to come back. It was during my
second year that Susan Tandy asked me to help
her with the Volunteer Lounge. She is such an
inspiring leader and I felt honored I had been
asked to work with her. I enjoyed assisting her
in managing the team on the floor in the years
that followed.
This October, I had the opportunity to be
the lead on the floor during Connecticut’s first
Mini MOM. The team did such a great job

Why We Do It
Best Tired You Can Feel! By Dr. William Nash

Alarm goes off. 4:00 a.m., too early for breakfast. Hold off on the coffee, there will be plenty
of that today. Roads are pretty clear this time of day, have to keep the speed reasonable. When
there is only one car on the road, you attract a little more attention than usual.
Approaching the site, there are signs, then a couple of dark, heavily-layered shapes with
flashlights. Always amazed that someone got up even earlier than me. Park the car. Make sure
I’ve got everything; t-shirt, hat, instruction sheets, rosters and protocol sheets. Leave the loupes
for later.
Walking up to the site, over a slight rise and I am hit once again with the crowded line of
humanity. The patients, some here all night, just to be sure that their dental problems will be
addressed. As always, I am struck by the thought that I cannot possibly understand what they
go through, day after day, living on the edge where dental care is a choice that conflicts with
decisions like paying rent, utilities or food.
I wave. A few wave back. It’s chilly. There are some “God bless yous” and “Thank yous.” A lot
of lawn chairs, especially in the front of the line, the all-nighters.
Inside, I am greeted by the face-splitting smile of Dr. Bob Schreibman, coffee in hand. Next
is Dr. Ernie Spira, in a hurry to perform some last minute finishing touches. I then find Dental
Triage area, stow my belongings and start the hunt for my first caffeine fix of the day. If Bob had
coffee, it must be somewhere around here.
The clinic floor is quiet, with a sprinkling of busy volunteers. The snack area is easy to find.
Susan Tandy is there looking unreasonably bright-eyed for this time of day. My co-lead, Dr. Jim
Smith, has already arrived when I get back to the triage area. As we review our lists, the first
members of “Team Triage” trickle in, as usual a mix of “old pros” and first timers.
Finally, the doors open. The crowd and noise swells as people sift through Registration and
Medical Triage. Patient #1 steps forward, chart in hand and a big smile on her face. I know I will
be tired for the next three days, but it is the best tired you can feel.

Saturday that I volunteered at CTMOM taught me more than I could ever properly
describe in words. I hesitate to even call it “volunteering,” because I was paid with
hundreds of smiles, piles of appreciation and I learned so much.

me. I am impressed by the professionals who donate their time and skill to deliver
treatment with compassion under pressure; by the organizers and leaders for their
time spent organizing this event, fund raising, securing equipment and supplies and
making decisions under pressure; and by the patients who are extremely grateful for
services that are provided to them. It is such a pleasure meeting and learning about
staff, patients, and fellow volunteers’ backgrounds.

Challenge Accepted

Being a Sterilization Lead has been one of
the most rewarding and one of the hardest
things I have had to do and I wouldn’t change
a thing! This year will be my seventh year
volunteering with CTMOM and every year it
just keeps getting better.
My first year as a volunteer back in 2010,
I assisted with an endodontist and really
enjoyed the ‘buzz’ of the clinic and meeting
all the patients and was hooked to come back
the following year with my Dental Hygiene
school. The energy of volunteerism and
people working together to help one another
is amazing and honestly it energizes me. I love
being a part of it. I think I may have been
skipping a bit here and there during the clinic
during my dozens of runs back and forth getting
clean instruments for the Hygienists. Josephine Bicknell,
CFDO Director of Programs, noticed my enthusiasm and
later that day, she asked me if I would be interested in being
a co-lead in the Sterilization Department. She warned me,
“It’s a really hard department. Are you sure?” I emphatically
said “yes.” I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into, but
it was a chance to work more closely with CTMOM and it
sounded like a challenge and I love challenges! The following year I worked with the two seasoned
leads I would take over for, to learn the ropes and find out
what kind of challenges we would have. I cannot lie, my
first day as co-lead during my first event was a little rough.
I made a mistake in taking the wrong states instruments off
the truck and unpacking and sterilizing them at the local
hospital not realizing what happened until it was too late
to fix. Although it was a huge headache and tears were
shed, we all made it through and I learned very quickly the
full-value meaning of flexibility and adapting. Everyone
pulled together to make everything work out and in the
end everything still worked seamlessly. I tell this particular
story because it highlights how well CTMOM volunteers
worked together to overcome and adapt. Josephine says
every year and in every email how important it is that
everyone be flexible and zig and zag when necessary,
because the needs of the clinic can change at any given
moment and I can say that this is one of the best and most
important skills a volunteer can bring to CTMOM. Since that fateful first day, I have spent
the majority of the winters in between
missions working (solo and with volunteers)
on organizing, labeling, inventorying and
streamlining the Sterilization Department.
Handling over 4,000 instruments is a lot
of work! I think I dreamt of Rongeurs and
amalgam carriers for months! All the years
of hard work have seemed to pay off, because
now we can pull our sturdy and well-labeled
plastic boxes out of our crates at the start of
the mission and have our department set up
in just a few hours. But none of that would
have been possible without the tireless efforts
of Josephine Bicknell and Alicia Morse at the
CFDO office being there so I could come in,
printing out pictures for the instrument boxes,
laminating them for me, getting literally hundreds and
hundreds of plastic shoe boxes and storage boxes for all our
storage needs, not to mention the handful of volunteers and
my new co-leads, Lu Ann Izraelevitz, Lisa Perry and Mary
LaChappelle, who took time out of their busy schedules to
come in and help me re-bag and put color code bands on
all our instruments! As exciting as it is seeing the Sterilization Department
getting really organized and running as smoothly as it
does now, what really makes each event special for me are
the people; the volunteers, my co-leads, my sterilization
volunteers, and the patients. Each and every person that
helps out is amazing and being part of CTMOM enhances
my life as much as the patients it helps.
I look forward to each event knowing that despite the
back to back 15 hour days, aching feet and little sleep, I
will be charged up with the ‘buzz,’ the energy of people
giving back to help others and feeling the gratitude of
those getting the help they need.
I can’t wait for the 2016 CTMOM!
