Eva Reynolds, SRNA
Eva has been employed with
Woodland Oaks since July of 2011
and became a preceptor in August
of 2014. She chose to become an
SRNA because she enjoys helping
people.
Eva says the residents have
helped her as much as she has
helped them. She enjoys reminiscing with them and learning
about their life stories and being
a comfort to them. When asked
what Eva thought she contributed most to the residents of
Woodland Oaks, she replies, “I am happy I can help meet
their needs and put a smile on their faces.”
Eva is happily married to her husband James of five years.
Together they have six children – three girls and three boys.
They also have eight grandchildren. Eva loves to cook, travel
and explore new places in her spare time.
Thank you, Eva, for all of your hard work! We appreciate
all that you do!

Norman McKnight is no
stranger to the residents of
Woodland Oaks. They gather
on Sunday mornings to hear his
uplifting message and encouraging words. Norman has been
teaching Sunday School here
at Woodland Oaks since 1992.
When the facility opened, he
waited patiently for six months
after expressing his interest in
being a volunteer to see where
he would be placed on the calendar. I think everyone would
agree, Sunday mornings have
been the perfect fit for him as well as for the facility. Norman has also become someone we could call in our time of
need. When a resident needs spiritual guidance or if we
need assistance setting up a baptism for a resident – day or
night – he is there.
Norman has been married to his beautiful wife Sharon
for the past 24 years. They have been blessed with four
daughters and nine grandchildren. How would he have
time to include our facility in his week? With no problem
at all. Whether he is making his way through the facility
visiting with friends, inviting residents to Sunday school or
leading the worship service, it is always a pleasure to see
his smiling face. His goal is to make sure everyone knows
they are loved and cared for. The residents as well as staff
members look forward to seeing his bright smiling face.
His kind words draw people to him and make them feel
at ease interacting with him. Norman is very unique in the
way he cares, listens and understands. When asked how he
believes he has helped residents become active members
of the facility, his reply was well expected. “I want the residents to be acquainted with each other, so I’m making sure
everyone gets introduced.” We are very fortunate to have
Norman as a member of our family here at Woodland Oaks.
When we asked Norman about his greatest accomplishment as a volunteer, his reply was, “I believe my greatest
accomplishment is helping people to see and trust in God
and to have the privilege of meeting people who enlighten
my heart.”
Norman has said many times that the residents have
helped him more than he could ever help them!
Congratulations to Norman for
being named the KAHCF Volunteer
of the Year! It is an honor to have
you as a volunteer!

Long-Term Resident - Charles Gannon
Resident
Spotlight
Charles has been a Woodland Oaks resident for
almost a year now. He can often be found in the
hallways telling his stories to staff and visitors and
showing off his pictures and awards to the many
people who stop by his room to chat.
Charles grew up in Westwood, Kentucky, with his
parents William and Ollie Ramey Gannon. His mother
owned a general store on Main Street in Westwood.
His father, a member of the Boyd County Police
Department, was shot in the line of duty when
Charles was only three years old.
Charles attended Ashland High School because
the Fairview School District only went through the
eighth grade at that time. Charles studied Spanish,
but his biggest passion was chemistry and science.
After high school, Charles attended Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, to study
chemistry. He did leave his studies and his girlfriend
to enlist in the Army during World War II. After the
war, Charles returned to LMU to finish his education.
While still attending college, he married his sweetheart in Middlesboro, Kentucky. They later had three
children together.
Charles worked in asphalt research and development for Ashland Oil. He has 26 inventions and patents in Canada, Europe and Australia. Long before
recycling was popular in the United States, Charles
had developed a use for old newspapers! Said to be
his favorite invention, “They made a pipe out of old
newspaper, they’d use thousands of pounds of old newspapers to make them!”
We are very proud to have Charles as part of our Woodland Oaks family and enjoy
hearing stories about his life! Thank you for being our Long-Term Resident Spotlight!
Short-Term Rehabilitation Resident - Judy Brose
Judy was born in Cabell County, West Virginia, and grew up in Ona. She graduated
from Barboursville High School - Class of 1955! She went on to attend beauty school
at Southern Marty in Huntington. Judy has been a hairdresser for 59 ½ years. As a
hairdresser, she has worked for Redken and was a platform artist for S&S Beauty
Supply Co. located in Cincinnati.
Judy married her husband Tom Brose in 1975. They left West Virginia and moved
to Ironton, Ohio.
Judy tells us that Friday, November 13th, was her unlucky day. She had an
accident that day which caused her to break her ankle in three places. After
surgery, her family doctor referred her to Woodland Oaks for Short Term Rehabilitation.
“Upon my arrival, I was greatly impressed with the staff and the beautiful facility,”
Judy said. “The rehab department gave me HOPE! They never let me doubt myself or
give up!” Judy added that the nurses and Dr. Jones are wonderful, too, and the aides
and kitchen crew are also terrific.
“Not only is the staff super, I have a great view from my window – free entertainment! I have been watching deer, birds and squirrels,” she added. “Woodland Oaks
is phenomenal!”
Thank you, Judy Brose, for choosing Woodland Oaks for your Short Term Rehabilitation, and for sharing your story!

Happy Birthday
Margaret!
Margaret was born January 24,
1916. Her parents Lucille and
Mike Zakrajsek came separately
to the United States in 1912 from
Yugoslavia/Slovenia and met in
West Aliquippa, Pennslyvania,
a steel town where immigrants
of many different nationalities
settled. Margaret had one older sibling, Mike, and two younger siblings,
Theresa (Cooper) and Fred. Margaret was raised in West Aliquippa, down the
block from the great musician and Academy Award and Grammy winner Henry
Mancini.
Growing up, Margaret enjoyed dancing, softball, bowling, and hopscotch.
She remembers fondly her neighbors in the community. She has had many
talents from cake decorating, sewing, cooking, dancing, cornhole, and an
amazing ability to adapt to change. She met her husband Samuel Latherow of
Rochester, Pennslyvania, when he stopped to talk to her while she was out for
a stroll with her best friend Jean. Sam and Margaret were married in 1936 and
had two sons, Samuel (1937) and Fred (1943). She still has her wedding dress
in her cedar chest along with many other momentos. Sam and Margaret were
married for 48 years until Sam’s death in 1982. In 1988, Margaret married her
childhood friend and avid dancer William Yaklich of Aliquippa. They remained
married until his death in 2002. They were very active in the Slovene National
Benefit Society. She misses her sons, husbands, family, and friends who have
passed before her.
Margaret moved to Ashland in 2007 to be closer to her grandson David
Latherow, his wife Leigh, and her great-grandchildren Luke Johnson and Jack
and Emma Latherow. She doesn’t get to spend as much time as she would like
with her granddaughter Keri Kocur of Holliston, Massachusettes, with whom
she is very close; Keri’s husband Dan; or her other great-grandchildren Aidan
and Grace. However, she is looking forward to spending her birthday weekend
with them. Her beloved daughter-in-law Gretchen followed her to Kentucky in
2010. She was independent and active until a stroke in 2014. Since then, she
has been a resident of Woodland Oaks where she enjoys crafts, the company
of visitors, and watching her favorite sports teams.
The following occurred the year Margaret was born: the U.S. Supreme Court
upheld the national income tax, Pancho Villa led the Mexican Revolution, the
light switch was invented, World War I was in full swing, Woodrow Wilson was
sworn in as President, and the last emperor of China abdicated his throne.
During her 100 years, she has gone from seeing people traveling by horse
and buggy to landing on the moon. She saw the invention or discovery of
short wave radios, frozen food, insulin, rockets, commercial air flight, penicillin, bubble gum, yo-yos, traffic signals, cake mix, microwaves, credit cards,
computers, and cell phones. She has adapted to all of these things. Her secret
to life is to trust in the Lord and to be thankful for what she has.
Happy 100th Birthday, Margaret!
Clear the Clutter
Now that Christmas has come and gone, we
encourage you to look through your loved
one’s closet and clear out any seasonal or
unneeded items! If you need assistance,
please contact the activity department!
Family Appreciation
Dear Staff of Woodland,
Just a note to say thank you for the
love and care you gave to my mom
Roberta.
It was hard to have her in a nursing
facility and visit for so many years,
but you made it easier.
From Nancy at the window greeting me, Doug singing in the hallway,
activities keeping things “happy”
with games, crafts and snacks (Mom
loved that part), to the office staff
that kept things running and cared
about my thoughts on Mom’s care.
To the daily care givers, to the skilled
therapists and nursing staff that
looked after her at all times, to the
cleaning staff who kept the environment looking good, to the kitchen
staff who worked hard to prepare her
meals, I thank you!
You made this difficult time in my
life easier with love. Joking with her,
talking to her – I could see glimpses
of my “old Mom” as you would share
stories of things she did around the
facility. I appreciate all you did.
Sincerely,
Margie Ramey
