Gloucester Bus Station
In 2015 there have been a lot of exciting events
happening in Gloucester, but 2016 will see the
start of one of the city’s major regeneration
projects – the Bus Station.
After a series of major public consultations, a planning application
to transform the bus station into a state-of-the-art transport hub
was submitted in August this year.
The new transport hub will include a streamline concourse, 12
bus bays, a manned ticket office, electronic timetable display and
toilets. There will also be interactive visitor information, a café and
CCTV. The designs show the whole building will have a modern
and futuristic look, and surrounding roads will also be improved.
There will be a new ‘kiss and go’ drop off and pick up point for
car passengers.
It is hoped work will start in spring 2016 when Bentinck House
and part of Grosvenor House will be demolished, to make way
for the first phase. The current bus station will be able to operate
as normal.
All the plans and reports for the bus station are available for viewing
and comment at www.gloucester.gov.uk by searching for Planning;

Gloucester gets
a digital upgrade
Over the last couple of months teams of technicians
have been hard at work replacing and updating the digital
hardware around the city centre. Here is what has
been happening:
THEN
NOW
• Since the summer, there have been ongoing works to improve
the city centre’s controlled circuit television (CCTV). Most of
the original “shoe-box” style cameras were originally installed in
the 1990s and they are being replaced with new high definition
cameras with a new digital transmission system to support them.
The new cameras provide higher quality images and are smaller
too so appear less obtrusive when fixed to buildings. The new
state-of-the-art cameras will improve safety and security within
Gloucester centre.
•Free public WiFi internet access in the city centre has been
available to everyone since September and it will be a
permanent feature for the benefit of residents, visitors and
businesses. The WiFi extends along the gate streets and is
also available in Gloucester Park to help everyone keep in
touch when out and about.
Broadband
scheme success
City businesses have been boosting their broadband
with the city councils’ Broadband Voucher scheme.
The scheme has been very successful, with 49
businesses in the city taking the opportunity for
the funding between April and October.
The grant scheme, which came to an end in October
this year, offered businesses a voucher of up to £3000
to cover installation costs for a superfast broadband
connection, helping improve and transform their
business. It is hoped the Government may make more
funding available for a similar scheme in the future –

Heritage
projects in
Gloucester
A number of organisations in
the city are working together,
with the council’s help, on
projects which celebrate our rich
and diverse heritage and culture,
while also looking into what
residents and visitors need from
the city. Here is a sneak peak at
what’s in store:
LLANTHONY SECUNDA
PRIORY RE-FORMATION
Llanthony Secunda Priory is a very important historical,
cultural and archaeological site surrounded by 21st century
waterside regeneration. The project has received a grant
of £311k to develop detailed plans to bring two Grade 1
listed medieval buildings back into use and to landscape
the grounds.
Visit www.llanthonysecunda.org to find out more.
ST MARY DE CRYPT
Discover DeCrypt
is the project
aiming to
regenerate St Mary
de Crypt Church
and the Old Crypt
Schoolroom on
Southgate Street
by improving the condition of the buildings and facilities.
Discover DeCrypt hopes to transform these important
historic buildings in danger of decay and dilapidation, into
a sustainable heritage attraction, learning resource, cultural
venue and community hub in the heart of the city.

GLOUCESTER WATERWAYS
MUSEUM REVITALISATION
The project has been awarded a Heritage grant of £994k towards
the revitalisation of the museum. Museum displays will be updated
to tell the story of the River Severn and the canals from Sharpness
to Birmingham. This project is supported by the Heritage Lottery
Fund, DCMS/Wolfson Museums & Galleries Improvement Fund
plus several local charitable trusts.
All paths
lead to
the hill
Robinswood Hill Country Park
and Nature Reserve is home to
Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust
and is owned and managed by
Gloucester City Council.
In August 2013 these two
organisations launched the
‘All Paths Lead to the Hill’
project, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for two years.
A variety of events and activities have been run over the past two
years to encourage local people to rediscover the hill, and increase
local knowledge and visitors to this wonderful site.
Funding has helped to improve wildlife habitats and encourage more
local volunteers to get involved in managing the hill. The project has
been a huge success in its first two years and will be continuing with

Gloucestershire
Archives’ development
plans
For the Record is an exciting project led by Gloucestershire
Archives. It plans to create a Heritage Hub, ensure long
term access to records created on electronic devices like
computers and mobiles, and build specialist storage rooms
for historic documents. The Heritage Hub will run from the
Archives’ Alvin Street premises and offers visitor facilities and
services, online information and an events programme. It will
support local people to gather, keep and share historic documents.
And it will help the public use these documents to discover
their family, local or house history. Project partners include
Gloucestershire Family History Society and the Diocese
of Gloucester.

Let’s get
physical
Getting fitter and healthier is often on a
list of New Year’s Resolutions and some of
the free sports facilities in the city are due
for an upgrade.
Glevum playground
Gloucester City Council launched its new playing pitch strategy on
24 September, aiming to review and improve Gloucester’s current
outdoor sports pitch facilities.
Residents were asked to comment on the strategy, which sets out
how accessible and sustainable outdoor sports facilities could be
provided across the city, now and in the future.
The strategy will help to protect existing playing fields, as well
as make sure that Gloucester has the right type and number of
new pitches.
Another benefit of the strategy will be to help ensure that
investment is directed where it’s needed most, and that the quality
and accessibility of the pitches is monitored, along with how well
they are used.
In fact a couple of trim trails have recently been installed in the
Abbey and Barnwood wards of the city at Glevum Way and
Clock Tower Park! The trim trails were grant funded through
Gloucestershire County Council’s Active Together fund, and
they are open so come and have a go!
It’s the
bees needs!
Barnwood Park and Arboretum has achieved an innovation award for providing
food and a home for pollinating insects, with a little help from park friends.
In fact, the Friends of Barnwood Park and Arboretum have been instrumental in establishing
the wildlife pond and the sowing of a flower seed bed. An insect hotel has also been built by the Friends
during their work mornings and these volunteers have been vital to making the park more bee-friendly
all year round. This award recognises their efforts - thank you.
Saintbridge Balancing
Pond and Allotments also
received a special ‘thank
you’ from the Green Flag
Awards for establishing a site
within the allotments where
bee hives have been installed,
and for sowing some wild
flower seed areas.

Pollinators such as bees are vital to the environment and the economy. Loss of habitat is a key factor affecting
pollinating insects and this award aims to increase awareness and help improve pollinator-friendly environments. The
innovation award is given to Green Flag Award or Green Flag Community Award winning parks and green spaces in
England that have made improvements to encourage pollinators across towns, cities and the wider countryside.
