In 2012, Story Clark
launched the app,
TravelStorysGPS, from her
home. The app uses people’s phones to connect
them to location-triggered stories about
Jackson Hole. Clark now
employs 5 people and the
app has been downloaded more than 5,500
times. The growing
travelstorys company can often be
found working in the
library.
“As a start up, we
don’t have a dedicated
recording studio to call home, and we rely on the
library’s study rooms,” says Clark.
The app’s sound technician, Christie Koriakan, adds,
“We’ve found it’s the best place to get people in
from the community to tell their stories. It’s a central location that everyone’s welcome to use and
everyone knows.”
When Rhonda Robles’
grandson was born at St.
John’s Medical Center
this April, he became one
of 435 babies in 2014 to
go home with a library
“Born to Read” kit, filled
with reading tips, tools,
and a board book.
During tummy time
exercises, “he’d reach for
[the board book] and
he’d learn to turn the
page,” Robles said. As
an occupational therapist, she understands
the value of engaging
early visual skills with books.
“It’s the right tool, for the right time, to provide just
the right challenge,” she said. “It’s such a wonderful
and valid community service.”
This service happens thanks to ongoing collaboration between library staff and volunteers.
In 2013, the library,
St. John’s Episcopal
Church and The Jackson Cupboard created
a partnership to help
end childhood hunger
in Teton County, piloting a program to give
free healthy snacks to
kids at the library. This
pilot program is now a
successful ongoing
after school
service with 400
after-school snacks
available each week
for kids at the
library.
“The library snack program has been an incredible
collaboration. We’ve been able to reach hundreds
of children with nutritious snacks,” said St. John’s
Episcopal Church Rector, Fr. Ken Asel. “We’re identifying needs affecting children and families in our
community and addressing them in a very creative
way.”
