Welcome Father Patrick
E– mail Father Ralph: [email protected]
We’re happy to welcome Father Patrick Abem to Saint
Bernard’s. He’ll be in residence with Father Joe and me for
at least the next year as he is the new chaplain at Nassau
University Medical Center. People have been asking me
about him so let me tell you ten things about Father Patrick.
1. Father Patrick was born and raised in Nigeria -- one of
God Bless Father
Andres
Father Andres Fernandez
was with us for the past
month to cover St.
Joseph’s Hospital as a
chaplain and now he
moves to Mercy Medical
Center in Rockville Center
to be a chaplain there til at
least June. He is going to
change residences to Our
Lady of Lourdes church in
Malverne since it is closer
to Mercy. Father Andres
will come and visit us from
time to time and we’re
looking forward to his
leading a special Stations
of the Cross in Spanish this
Lent. So he doesn’t want
us to say farewell just yet.
We were very blessed to
have him as a brother
priest in the rectory and for
his short ministerial stay
with us. We continue to
pray for him in his work
among those seeking
healing.
seven children. His father has been a professional
photographer and currently is involved in the cocoa
industry. His mother’s career was raising seven children!
2. For the past five years Father Patrick has been studying in Rome at the School
of the Holy Cross (Santa Croce) where he received his doctorate degree in bioethics. So yes, there is now a doctor in the house.
3. Last weekend Father Patrick experienced his first American snow.
He had been
helping in some Long Island parishes during the summer time over the past few
years, but never was here in the winter. He considers this an “historic” event in his
life. (That and his car battery dying!)
4. Father Patrick likes community life.
While is he a diocesan priest of the Diocese
of Ogoja, Nigeria, he likes living in community with other priests. (How could he
not like living with me and Father Joe?) He was ordained seven years ago -- his
anniversary is August 23rd.
5. Speaking of community, Father Patrick really likes Levittown and Saint
Bernard’s. He has found great friendliness and welcome here since he has arrived.
6. He is a soccer player and a soccer fan (though he calls that game “football”).
His
favorite team to root for is Chelsea. And if there are men in the parish who play
informal soccer games, let him know when and where. He might just join you.
7. Father Patrick loves being a priest because it is a life of service that brings him
joy.
8. He would rather read on his Kindle than read a physical book.
He likes
electronics. His favorite read? Motivational books.
9. He is adjusting to his life as a chaplain at the hospital. He was surprised that so
many people in this country are disposed to accepting the ministry of a chaplain.
But he is equally surprised at how forward people can be in saying that they do not
need a chaplain or religion.
10. I’m going to let you discover the tenth thing about Father Patrick yourself.
You’ll be glad to get to know him.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
January 31, 2016
First Reading: The First Reading relates the call of the
prophet Jeremiah. Knowing the challenges that faced
God’s prophets, Jeremiah demurred from accepting
God’s call, giving all the reasons that he
would not be a good prophet. Following
God’s path is never easy. The Lord tells
Jeremiah as much. But, at the same time,
God promises Jeremiah that he will never
abandon him.
Second Reading: Paul was and is known for the power
of his teaching and for his skill in building up the
Church. Yet here he makes his priorities clear. No
accomplishment has value without love. In
the end, the love we have poured forth will be
the measure of our lives. Only the faith we
have shared, the hope on which we have
relied, and the love we have expressed will last
when our earthly achievements have passed
away.
Responsorial Psalm 71: The psalm builds on
the assurances of the Lord that conclude the
First Reading. The psalmist recalls that God
has been with him from the first moments of
his life, to guide and protect him. He
expresses his hope and his trust that God will
maintain his saving presence. As always, the
experience of God’s loving presence and
faithful protection transforms us and calls us
to “declare [his] justice” and proclaim his
“wondrous deeds.”
Gospel: Last Sunday’s Gospel related Jesus’
preaching in the synagogue in Nazareth.
Today’s Gospel shows the aftermath of the
preaching. While the people were impressed
by his preaching, they could not accept that it
came from someone familiar to them. They
wanted more proof. Jesus responds not with
proof, but by reminding his listeners that God
does not act in the way we expect. He seeks
out those disregarded by others and he
protects all of those he calls.
Saints of the Week
says that he cured a young boy choking on a fish bone.
Tuesday, February 2. Feast of the Presentation of the
Lord. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is also
called Candlemas Day. According to Luke’s account of
the Gospel, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah in
the Temple and declared him “a light for revelation to
the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Luke
2:32). This sparked the tradition of blessing enough
candles to last an entire year.
St. Ansgar, born in France, was a monk with a
missionary spirit. He longed to travel to distant lands to
draw more and more souls to the saving message of
Christ. His missionary endeavors were directed toward
Scandinavian territory, thus earning him the title Patron
of Denmark. He is credited with organizing missions to
Denmark, Sweden, and Norway and building the first
Christian church in Sweden.
Wednesday, February 3. Although St. Blaise (†316)
and St. Ansgar (801-865) were separated by time, they
both wanted to care for souls. While serving as Bishop
of Sebastea, in Armenia, St. Blaise was a visible witness
of the Gospel, which eventually led to his martyrdom
during the persecutions of Diocletian. His feast day is
commemorated with a blessing of throats because legend
Friday, February 5. St. Agatha. Virgin and Martyr.
Agatha was born in Sicily, probably around the year
231, and is one of the women mentioned by name in
Eucharistic Prayer I. According to legend, she was the
daughter of a prominent family and was very beautiful.
The Roman senator Quintianus wished to marry her,

but when Agatha spurned him, he had her put in a
brothel. In spite of this Agatha held to her Christian
faith. Quintianus then had her tortured by having her
breasts cut off. She eventually died in prison in 253. St.
Agatha is the patron of the city of her martyrdom,
Catania, and is invoked against the fire, earthquakes,
and eruptions of Mount Etna. She is also considered the
patron saint of breast cancer patients.
Saturday, February 6. St. Paul Miki and Companions.
Martyrs. St. Paul Miki (†1597), a Jesuit priest, was one
of the twenty-six martyrs of Japan. Feeling threatened
by the growing influence of the Jesuits, the local
governor had members of the Christian community
arrested and thrown in jail. They were forced to walk
600 miles from Kyoto to Nagasaki as a deterrent to other
Christians, but they sang the Te Deum as they went. At
Nagasaki they were crucified. When Christian
missionaries returned to Japan in the nineteenth century,
they found that a secret Christian community had
survived by transmitting their beliefs and prayers from
generation to generation.

St. Vincent de Paul:
The Souper Bowl of Caring:
Dear Parishioners:
Pope Francis has declared a “Year of Mercy” throughout the world. In keeping with his hope for a more merciful society, our Charitable KIDZ are collecting next
weekend, SUPER BOWL WEEKEND for Catholic
Charities of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Catholic
Charities, whose mission is “Care with Dignity…Life
with Hope” provided 1.5 million face-to-face services to
over 61,000 Long Island neighbors last year.
The St. Bernard’s Conference of the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul offers sincere thanks for the generosity shown to
our Conference. We received hundreds of donations in the
special collection of our Blue Envelopes, receiving more
than $9000.00. Your continual kindness to the needy of
our community enables us to help our less fortunate neighbors who struggle in their daily lives. Our Conference
prays for you at every weekly meeting. May you continue
in your charitable works in helping us to help others.
If you miss our Charitable KIDZ on the way into
church, they will be there when you leave Mass. They
will be delighted to accept your offering in their soup
pots!
This week, our pantry needs include:
Checks should be made out to “Parish Social Ministry.”
Of course, we are looking to surpass our collection of
last year when we were able to give $4000 to Bethany
House for homeless women and children.
Ramen or Cup-of-Noodles soups
Tea
Peanut butter
Please remember the poor boxes
and to “buy one, get one free!”
Thanks!
The Holy Trinity High School Boys and Girls Bowling
Team had a food collection at their Alumni Day. The
donated food was brought to our pantry by five of the
students under the direction of Mary and Frank Messina.
Jan Jamroz, Director of Parish Social Ministry for Catholic Charities, will be back to pick up the check, and to
thank everyone, in the near future. If you forgot to bring
your donation, you can bring it to the office during the
week of February 7th.
Catholic Health Services Healthy Sundays:
Catholic Health Services will be our guest this weekend,
Sunday, January 31st from 10:00-noon for free flu shots
and blood pressure screenings. Please stop in to the parish center before or after Mass. P.S. They bring lots of
good snacks and freebies!

St. Bernard’s Mid-Week
Mid-Morning Book Discussion
Our first read for 2016! – a courtroom thriller that triggers every
parental instinct to protect our children. Assistant District Attorney
Andy Barber is respected in his community, tenacious in the
courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son,
Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their
New England town, Andy is blindsided by what
happens next: His fourteen-year-old son is
charged with the murder of a fellow student.

Your time and help is truly appreciated!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
This letter brings with it my sincere hope that your Christmas and New Year’s Holidays were filled with
many blessings and that God continues to share his love and graces with you throughout the coming year.
We wish to thank you for your continued leadership support of your Parish and the Catholic Ministries
Appeal. We are so deeply grateful for the extraordinary sacrifices that you have made to support the work
of our church on Long Island. Your generosity and commitment to our faith, and community fills me with
confidence that many wonderful things will continue to take place in our Diocese.
Last year because of your support we not only were able to continue to bring religious education to more
than 100,000 students in public schools, but we were also able to initiate a special training program for
Catechists so they can assist the ever-growing number of autistic children in our community. We were
proud to ordain five priests for the Diocese of Rockville Centre and continue to support the men in our
Diaconate program, all of which you help make possible.
Last year at secular college campuses across our Island more than 3,500 students a month participated in
Mass and other faith-based activities. At one of the campuses students didn’t have a sacred place to pray so
they worked together with our Office of Campus Ministry to convert a storage closet into a chapel. These
young adults are growing in their faith and you are helping them to do that.
Please know how grateful I am for your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, and in all humbleness
on behalf of all who would benefit from your kindness, I am asking you to make a gift to the 2016 Catholic
Ministries Appeal and, so that together as one faith family, we can continue to meet the needs of our
community.
With gratitude and prayers, I am Sincerely yours in Christ,
Bishop of Rockville Centre
