What do I do with my old light bulbs?
If you have old incandescent light bulbs, you
may wrap them up in newspaper or paper
towels and put them in your regular waste
bin. These bulbs contain no mercury and are
too thin to be recycled.
If you have fluorescent light bulbs of any kind
including Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
(CFLs), they are considered hazardous waste
and cannot be placed in a trash bin. These bulbs contain minor
amounts of mercury and need to be disposed of properly.
Residents are urged to be cautious when wrapping up the items
for transport in the hazardous waste bins. Residents may call the
City's recycling hotline and schedule a pick-up as part of the doorto-door hazardous waste program. Residents may also drop off
their light bulbs at the Batteries Plus in Thousand Oaks, and the
Home Depot in Newbury Park and West Hills.
What is composting and how do I start?
Composting is the decomposition of plant remains and other onceliving materials to make an earthy, dark, crumbly substance that is
excellent for adding to houseplants or enriching garden soil. It is
the way to recycle your yard and kitchen wastes, and is a critical
step in reducing the volume of garbage
needlessly sent to landfills for disposal.
City residents are eligible to receive one
free tumbler-type home composting
container. Residents may request the
tumbler by calling (805) 522-9400. There is
a $25 delivery fee.

City's Residential Rehabilitation Program
"Families"
The City of Westlake Village recently created a new waiting list for the City's "Residential
Rehabilitation Program." The Housing Rehabilitation Program provides one-time grants of up to
$5,000 for income eligible residents. This program is funded through a grant from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development Commission. Eligible participants must be the
owner of the property to be rehabilitated, must occupy the home to be rehabilitated as a principal
residence, and must meet the low income requirements as established by the Federal Department
of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defined as 80% of the Median Household Income Rate
for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Through this program, eligible residents may be able to receive grants for necessary health and
safety repairs for owner-occupied, single family homes and mobile-homes on a citywide basis.
Examples of eligible projects include: water heater replacement, electrical and plumbing repairs,
roof repairs/replacement, handicap accessibility improvements, heating/air conditioning repairs,
and repair work to correct deficiencies present within the home.
Residents interested in receiving further information or in determining if they may be eligible
for this program should contact Kerry Kallman, Administrative Analyst at 818-706-1613. It is

Theme Continues with Five Additional Programs
City Streets are Cleaned on a Weekly Basis?
The City of Westlake Village takes great pride in the community's well-maintained streets and public
landscaped areas. Toward that end, the City contracts for street sweeping service on a weekly basis. In
addition, the weekly sweeping helps to prevent unwanted materials from entering the storm drains, creeks,
and the lake. The City's street sweeping occurs on Thursdays and Fridays each week.
Residents are asked to help maximize the street sweeper effectiveness by parking off the street on their
neighborhood cleaning day.
Weekly Street Sweeping Schedule:
Thursday Canyon Oaks, First Neighborhood, Lakeshore, and Southshore
Friday Agoura Road, City Parks, Lakeview Canyon Rd., Lindero Canyon Rd., Parkwood Estates,
Thousand Oaks Blvd., Three Springs, The Trails, Triunfo Canyon Rd., and all other roads not listed.
Thank you for your cooperation and efforts in assisting the City's street sweeping program. For additional
information on street sweeping, please contact City Hall at 818-706-1613.
All programs are free and open to the public and held at the Westlake Village Civic Center located at 31200
Oak Crest Drive. Westlake Village Reads was created to encourage reading throughout the community by
residents of all ages. For a detailed schedule and more information about each program, please visit the
City's website at wlv.org or call City Hall at 818-706-1613.

Quick Guide to
GAS SAFETY
The following safety tips are provided by the So Cal Gas
Company.
Use your senses to alert you to a gas leak. If you suspect
a gas leak, don't light a match, cigarette, candle, or turn
on lights or electrical appliances. Immediately leave the
area, and from a safe location call Southern California
Gas Company at 1-800-427-2200 or 911.
Preparing to dig in your yard? Call before you dig.
Underground pipelines can be anywhere. Be sure to call
811 two business days in advance to schedule a nocost service appointment to mark the locations of
buried, utility owned lines serving your property.
In the event of an emergency, know where your gas meter
is located and keep a 12 inch or larger adjustable wrench
with your emergency supplies to shut off the meter.
Equip your home with a carbon monoxide alarm.
California's Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act
of 2010 requires that, as of July 1, 2011, all single family
homes with a fossil burning appliance, fireplace, or
attached garage be equipped with an approved carbon
monoxide alarm. All other residential units must have a
carbon monoxide alarm by January 1, 2013.
Keep your gas appliances operating safely and efficiently.
Make sure to have So Cal Gas or a licensed, qualified
professional check your gas appliances every year.
Los Angeles County Fire Department offers free Community Emergency
Response Training (CERT) to residents several times a year. The 7-week
class provides training in basic disaster response skills, such as fire
safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical
operations. The upcoming CERT class modules will begin on March 12th in Agoura Hills. The classes will meet
from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm in the Agoura Hills Civic Center Community Room located at 30001 Ladyface Court.
Meet the Artist
CERT graduates are encouraged to join the Westlake Village Disaster Response Team (WLVDRT). The WLVDRT
is a volunteer group that provides community members with basic training designed to help them better
care for themselves, their families and others in the community in the event of a disaster. Additionally, the
WLVDRT recruits, equips, and maintains a well-trained citizen response team to aid the City in the event
of an emergency. Members of the WLVDRT will be at a CERT training to provide more information on the
Westlake Village team. If you are interested in taking the CERT courses or learning more about the WLVDRT,
please contact, Kerry Kallman, Administrative Analyst, at 818-706-1613. You may register for the free
courses online at: www.fire.lacounty.gov/cert, by simply scrolling down to the Agoura Hills listing, then
clicking on the "register" link.
Local Artist Trish Shaheen unveils her
work in the Westlake Village Library.
Her show, "Afternoons Along The
Waterways" will be on display through
March. On February 10, residents have an opportunity to
meet the artist and see her at work. The free program
will run from 1:30 to 3:30 pm and is open to the public.
