RSVP required in order to attend, don’t miss out! Meet and Greet with IHSA’S Bob Cacchione Over 8,700 students representing 370+ colleges and universities from across the United States and Canada participate in the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. The man, who started it all, Bob Cacchione, will be in the Valley of the Sun to share his story and the story of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Join us on Tuesday, November 22nd at Sweetwater Stables from 6pm to 8pm for a meet and greet with the founder and Executive Director of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), Bob Cacchione. Sweetwater Stables and the AHJA will host the event to encourage students, 8th grade and up, and their parents to learn more about the programs and opportunities offered across the country. With an emphasis on learning, sportsmanship, and teamwork, the IHSA promotes competition for riders in college of all skill levels, who compete individually and as teams, at Regional, Zone, and National levels. The IHSA was founded in 1967, based on a competitive prototype created by then-Fairleigh Dickinson College sophomore, Robert E. Cacchione, on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows regardless of his or her financial status or riding level. The objective of IHSA is to offer students the chance to compete, as individuals and as members of a team, whether they are in their first years of riding or are seasoned competitors. Eliminating the expense of shipping or even owning horses puts IHSA competition within reach of many who might otherwise miss the equestrian experience. Since its beginning in 1967, with just two intercollegiate competing colleges, today's IHSA is an organization that encompasses 36 Regions in 8 Zones with more than 370 member colleges in 47 states and parts of Canada - representing more than 8700 riders in Hunter Seat Equitation, Western Horsemanship, and Reining. If you are interested in learning more about the opportunities surrounding this wonderful experience with IHSA then be sure to attend the Meet and Greet at Sweetwater Stables, 28618 N 53rd St, Cave Creek, AZ 85331, on Tuesday November 22nd from 6pm to 8pm. Please RSVP by Friday, November 18th to Holly Potter Gilbey at [email protected] or (901) 2105067. For more information about Bob Cacchione and the IHSA visit www.IHSA.com. PAGE 2 The Emerging Athletes Program Being accepted to EAP Nationals has been by far the pinnacle of my riding career. Since beginning the EAP application process, I’ve graduated high school and begun my education at the University of Southern California. But though it’s been a busy transition time for me, and finding time for riding hasn’t been the easiest task, I’ve never lost my focus on the sport. I took on as many lessons as I could and went to several shows over the summer to keep me on my game. I even flew home from college one weekend for a clinic with Diane Carney. I am so grateful that I’ve been able to attend the EAP training sessions over this busy time. The training programs have taught me many elements of horsemanship, involving Check the Arizona Hunter Jumper Association Facebook By Sean Summers horse training, stable management, horse-rider relationships, and riding techniques. Melanie, Jeff, and Mindy have been excellent instructors for me, and I’m very thankful for the opportunities I received to train with them. Their knowledge and wise though, I am also grateful for the trainers and horses that have gotten me to the level I’m at today. I couldn’t have done it without Jan Pearce (my trainer from lesson ponies to short stirrup) and especially Betty Beran, who taught me much of what I know today; I couldn’t be more thankful for the effort she put into my improvement and all the support and instruction she’s given me. Most of all, I’d like to give thanks to my parents for the years of their continued patience and support. Sean Summers and Starlight I’m so excited to get to train with this year’s clinicians and can’t wait to get back in the saddle in Illinois. EAP Nationals is going to be a spectacular learning and riding experience! understanding of horses and riding provided me with a phenomenal training experience. I couldn’t be more grateful for their generosity to the program. Finalists are again closely observed and evaluated during all phases of the National Training Session and are expected to be active participants in all activities. The riding sessions address both flatwork and jumping, horsemanship sessions are hands-on, in depth and extensive, barn chores are monitored, and a written test gauges the knowledge each finalist has gained throughout the year. Additional clinics such as veterinary seminars, trimming and shoeing, saddlefitting and feeding regimens may be offered as well. Riders and guests spend one final funfilled evening together complete with dinner and a Calcutta for the next and final day’s Nations Cup style competition. A two round Nations Cup style A small group of twelve finalists allows competition involving three teams of the riders to work very closely with the four riders each will complete the competition. This team format offers the ARIZONA HUNTER-JUMPER ASSOCIATION riders an opportunity to showcase their riding skills as well as their ability to perform under pressure. An awards ceremony follows the competition where one rider is named the overall USHJA EAP National Champion and is awarded a $3000 grant to be applied toward the cost of advanced training with an approved trainer. Closing remarks from the clinicians bring each EAP year to a close but for many of the riders their participation in the EAP Program has brought them to the start of a new level of understanding and commitment to the hunter/jumper sport. These young riders may run into each other at horse shows during the year or this may be the only time they meet. But the camaraderie shared throughout the Emerging Athletes Process is an experience that will stay with them for a lifetime.
