Pick up your rental car at Keflavík International airport and explore Reykjanes peninsula or head to the Blue Lagoon for a relaxing soak.
Overnight in Keflavik
Day 2: Borgarfjordur - Skagafjordur - Akureyri
Today’s journey takes you on a picturesque drive to the small city of Akureyri in the North of Iceland.
Unique areas to explore along the way include Borgarfjordur, where sights such as Deildatunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in the world, and
Hraunfossar waterfalls are sure to leave an impression.
As you travel further north, the village of Blonduos, built on both sides of the popular salmon river Blanda, and the horse breeding district of
Skagafjordur are well worth a visit.

Day 3: Akureyri - Lake Myvatn
Travel towards the famous Lake Myvatn with a stop at the magnificent Godafoss waterfall (“Waterfall of the Gods”). The Myvatn region is well known for
all its hidden gems between the lava, including the vibrantly coloured Hverarond mud pools and the area of Dimmuborgir, which is perfect for a nice walk
in the outdoors and a visit to the “Elf Church” that is hidden in the lava field.
Then it’s on to Husavik, a small fishing village that has become a centre of whale watching in Iceland due to various species of whale that swim in the
nearby Skjalfandi bay.
Overnight in Lake Myvatn area
Day 4: Lake Myvatn – Egilsstadir - Hofn
Explore the empty vastness of the highland desert plateau Modrudalsoraefi, heading to the east fjords. Egilsstadir has a legendary monster in a lake and
many claim to have seen it. Why not try your luck when crossing the bridge over the lake? There is also a very popular route that goes around the lake and
offers some beautiful stops on the way. Hengifoss, the second highest waterfall in Iceland at 126m high, is nearby. It’s a fairly easy walk up to it and well
worth it if time allows. Skriduklaustur, the home of the poet Gunnar Gunnarsson, has unique architecture and is also worth a visit. Cross the Breiddalsheidi/Oxi plateau, which is often embraced with a mysterious fog. Reindeer are often spotted in this area. Djupivogur, rich in birdlife, is an ideal place to
stop if you have an interest in birds. “The Eggs” is a special art installation by the harbour that consists of 34 eggs, representing each of the species of the
local birds in the area. Drive onwards to Hofn through Almannaskard pass; don’t forget to stop and admire the majestic coastline.
Overnight in Hofn
Day 5: Hofn - Skaftafell National Park - Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Throughout the day you can take in the breathtaking view of the mighty Vatnajokull glacier. Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, with its majestic icebergs floating
in the 180-metre deep lagoon, is full of life. The lagoon is ideal for seals to hunt for food and they are often seen curiously peeking out of the water in between hunting, or just relaxing on the icebergs. On the other side of the road is a hidden gem where you can see the tumbling ocean waves and icebergs
strewn like jewels over the coastline. Skaftafell National Park is located at Skeidararsandur, a wide plain of black sand crossed by glacial rivers. Drive
through Kirkjubaejarklaustur, a former site of a 12th-century Catholic convent, before crossing Eldhraun, the largest mass of lava ever to flow on the face
of the earth.
Overnight in Vik area

Day 6: South Coast highlights
Explore the region close to the towering volcano Eyjafjallajokull, which is probably the most famous volcano in the world today. Follow the coastline,
make a stop at the spectacular waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Then onwards to Reynisfjara beach, viewing the extraordinary rock formations
and thundering waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Overnight in Reykjavik
Day 7: Golden Circle
UNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park is the spot where the world’s oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. Continue through farmland areas to the geothermal fields of Geysir, with bubbling mud pools and the reliably erupting Strokkur hot spring. Last but not least,
visit the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight.
Overnight in Reykjavik
Day 8: Departure
Drive back to Keflavik International Airport and drop off rental car.
