MESSAGE FROM
THE PRESIDENT
M. Silvia Bettega, Ed.D.
Mes chers amis,
This has been a very busy “rentrée.” The school
numbers are strong and students seem to be extremely pleased with the trimester schedule, the
new textbooks, and the quality of our teachers.
We reconnected with two organizations in September. To begin the school year, we met with Marie
Dominique Boyce, President of the Alliance Française de New Haven, and some fellow members in
the relaxed and pleasant atmosphere of Restaurant
Sans Souci. Later in the month, we experienced a
beautiful exhibit of more than 100 photos of local
artist John Rohatsch. This exhibit was organized in
conjunction with the West Hartford Art League.
We hope to continue this collaboration in the future.
The Alliance offered two unique events in October.
Thanks to Sharon Straka’s leadership, some members just came back from a fabulous three-day trip
to Montréal, Canada where they discovered new
places, visited museums, and enjoyed the great
cuisine that characterizes that city. The month continued with an interesting conference on Post Impressionism. Docent Jackie Peterson guided her
audience through the lives and the beautiful paintings of Masters such as Gauguin, Degas, ToulouseLautrec, etc.
But November is already here and la fête du Beaujolais is quickly approaching. This year the celebration is scheduled for the third Thursday of November so we can join the global party in real time as
the last bottles are being opened in the streets of
Paris. Like last year, it will be held at the elegant
Hartford Club. Venez nombreux et santé!
En Alliance,
Silvia

Alliance Française Members Travel to Montréal
Fourteen members of the Alliances Françaises of Connecticut and friends traveled
to Montreal October 8-11 with trip coordinator Sharon Straka. It was a collaborative
effort on the part of the Alliances Françaises of Hartford, New Haven and Northwest
Connecticut. The trip was organized by Prométour who had done a previous tour for
the Alliance of Hartford. Three members of the Alliance of New Haven participated
including president Marie-Dominique Boyce, along with two members of the Alliance of NW CT. The rest of the members were from the Alliance of Hartford accompanied by president Silvia Bettega.
The intergenerational group which included participants from age 9 to over 65, enjoyed many sights and guided visits in this exciting cosmopolitan city which is the
second largest French speaking city in the world. They took a bi-lingual bus tour of
the city and had guided tours of the lovely basilica of Notre Dame, the archeological
museum in Vieux Montréal (Pointe-à-Callière), the Oratory of St. Joseph, and the
McCord Museum. They also had the opportunity to visit the Fine Arts Museum, the
underground city with its wonderful shopping, the festival of Chinese Lanterns at the
botanical gardens, and the Olympic Tower funicular with its stunning views of the
city.
At the CinéRobothèque they had an overview of various films produced by the Canadian Film Board and were able to view individually films selected from more than
5,000 movies available. By visiting the website www.onf.ca, various clips can be
viewed from home such as “Sacrée Montagne--Montréal sous la neige” or the
charming animated short film nominated for an Oscar in 2008, “Madame Tutli-Putli.”
The city provided some exciting possibilities for dining with its interesting restaurants with various types of French and international cuisine. Crêpes were enjoyed
by the group at Crêperie Chez Suzette in Vieux Montréal and the cooking school
L’Académie Montréal on the lively Rue St. Denis was the site of the group’s Saturday evening meal.
Each day included a bountiful Canadian breakfast at the Holiday Inn Midtown where
the group stayed.
The trip to Montreal was enlivened by a birthday party held on the bus. The Québecois sweet of dark chocolate marshmallow whippets were the treat served in lieu of
a birthday cake. The group sang the Québecois birthday song “Gens du Pays” twice
as there was another birthday celebrated on the way back. Members and friends
were happy to see this beautiful city with its many cultural sights and to have the
opportunity to practice their French.

Volunteers Needed for Committee
Events such as the Annual Meeting, the 14 juillet and the Beaujolais
Nouveau require dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers working together to
plan and implement their creative ideas. In the past, in addition to
these events, the AFH has offered cooking classes, wine tastings, tennis soirées, game nights, music programs, trips to New York City and
Québec. The possibilities are endless, but first we need YOU to volunteer your time to make it happen. Join a convivial group of Francophiles
who just want to have fun.
Call the AFH office today at 860-278-9999.

We lost a best friend this past spring. The
Alliance Française lost a dedicated supporter. Alice loved French, the language,
the culture and the friends who shared
this love. She was a student, a helper on
the Alliance Board, a regular at the cultural programs, a member of Le Petit Cercle and the reading group. Upon her retirement from teaching Alice and her husband, Jim, traveled and lived in France.
She loved everything French: films, reading, speaking and learning. This past year
when a stroke limited her speech, French
was always there. In honor of her unstoppable character and constant friendship
we established a fund to support cultural
programs. Contributions can be sent to:

pas importantes, mais les recherches montrent qu’il y a des liens
entre les maladies parodontales et les maladies cardiaques, le diabète, le cancer, et plusieurs d’autres maladies. Heureusement, une
visite régulière chez le dentiste préviendrait les maladies parodontales!
