Sometime in 1958, young Marylou Monfort
developed a penchant for shopping. Not just
any shopping, but grocery shopping specifically and almost exclusively. When her
mother would go to Vail’s Market to do the
family shopping, Marylou most always found
a way to tag along. It wasn’t the produce or
the dairy products that attracted Marylou. It
was the young, handsome clerk that she was
going to see. Merle Gilmour, along with his
dad, worked in the market located at the
corner of Capitol and Anderson; the current
location of the Ellensburg Youth Activity
Center.
counseling with a local pastor. During that
counseling, they were required to take a
marriage personality test. The reverend gave
their marriage a fifty-fifty chance. That didn’t
deter them; they were in love, the plans
were complete and all systems were "GO".
And go they did! On the morning of January
21, 1959, Marylou went to school where she
schemed for an early dismissal and left Ellensburg in Merle’s two-tone blue, two-door
hardtop Mercury – headed for Coeur
d’Alene where they became husband and
wife.
While mom filled the shopping cart with
supplies for the family, Marylou would “hangaround” wherever the young Mr. Gilmour
was in the store and flirt. Marylou was about
to get her driver’s license, and Merle told
her that when she did, he wanted to be the
first to ride along with her. That day happened on July 3, 1958, and the rest, as they
say, is history. Merle got his ride in Marylou’s mom’s 1957 Buick, and Marylou found
the road to a happiness that would become
her life.
'Merle was ever the gentleman,' says Marylou, and after a brief courtship, followed by a
four month engagement, Mr. & Mrs. "G"
became a reality. The date was set, she had
her dress and he had his suit cleaned and
ready to go; she had his ring hidden in the
car (charged to her mother’s account at Button Jewelers). In the weeks leading up to
their marriage, they stealthily planned an
elopement to the Hitching Post in Idaho.

The Safeway Foundation is an employee
based giving program in which Safeway employees determine the organizations slated
each year to receive funding. All dollars
pledged and donated by these same employees “stay in our communities” according to
DeVar Gleed, manager of the Safeway Store
in CleElum.
In 2007 the Safeway Foundation announced
that the non-profit organization chosen for
their giving year 2007-2008 was Hospice
Friends.

Imagine our delight when we learned that Hospice Friends was set to receive the same
honor for the 2008-2009 giving period. We
were overwhelmed with gratitude, particularly
when we really learned what the Safeway
Foundation is all about.
Each year, Safeway districts around the country conduct an employee giving program. A
primary element of that program is that each
store manager consults with each employee
individually to discuss the potential of a giving
deduction which comes from the employee’s
earnings. The employee may choose to participate and set a level of contribution that is
comfortable, or they may choose to opt out.
Also, the employees collectively throughout
the district are the people responsible for
choosing the organizations targeted as recipients.
We are proud and humbled at the same time
that the local employees at both the Ellensburg
and Cle Elum Safeway stores have chosen
Hospice Friends two years in a row.
In October, 2008, DeVar Gleed presented a
check to Hospice Friends. A second check
was presented by Steve Marsh, Store Manager at the Ellensburg Safeway in February

After the ceremony, Marylou called home to
tell her mom who spent the next thirtyminutes arguing that it just wasn’t possible
because Marylou had gone to school that
morning. Of course there were families to
“deal” with, one very supportive and one less
than pleased. They took up residence, under
some suspicious looks, in Ellensburg and continued to create their life together there for
almost fifty-years.

(complete with the gown, cake and full reception).

corner of 8th and Chestnut in Ellensburg.
Tucker’s later became “Mr. G’s” and thus
began a third generation of Gilmour family
service to the community.
In January 2007, Merle and Marylou Gilmour
received very disturbing news. Merle was
diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
He began chemotherapy and radiation treatment that at first appeared to have been successful. Sadly, a second tumor developed and
was again confirmed to be malignant.
Through a very trying time, Merle and Marylou
clung to the one thing they knew to be solid
truth.
Their FAITH!
Specifically, their
F.R.O.G. FAITH! Seriously, both of these
words are acronyms for “Fantastic Adventures In Trusting Him by Fully Relying On
God.” They were comforted by their belief
that ‘the Sovereign God is intimately involved
in our lives on earth and that He is in control
of all that He allows us to experience.’
During Merle’s final days on earth, his faith in
Jesus Christ remained steadfast. His determination to not leave his loving wife in any more
turmoil than necessary became steadfast as
well. 'He was a gourmet cook and did much of
the cooking,' says Marylou. In addition he did
the yard work, was the one to have the car
serviced and other routine chores required in
keeping a household running smoothly.
During those final months, Merle would take
Marylou into the yard and say to her 'you need
to know…” and then commence showing her
how to complete a task to which she had

love letter written to their friends and family:
'The Lord has made this day…and we choose
to rejoice and celebrate with you the day of
our wedding…We love each other because
God first loved us…at one time or another
and in one-way or another we have caught a
glimpse of God’s character in each other and
in you.'

On October 5, 2008, Merle Gilmour took his
final earthly breath. Soon after, Marylou remembers thinking 'I am so vulnerable,' and
then remembers the time that she had with
Merle and is ever grateful that she 'saw in
Merle a picture of God’s love, a picture I could
hold to better understand His love for me.'
Today, Marylou continues her quest to live
each day to the fullest. That doesn’t mean that
she is moving along as though there is no sadness. Some days still bring tears. There are so
many “firsts” this year...first Christmas without
Merle, first birthday, first anniversary. When
people ask her how she’s doing, she will generally respond with an 'Okay'; hoping desperately
that they don’t ask her to define 'Okay.'

We Belong Together
Hospice Friends is proud to be connected in a
very meaningful way to Kittitas Valley Home
Health and Hospice. To the casual observer,
the roles of our sister organizations often become intermingled. Many consider that we
are the same organization and frankly, that’s
OK.
certain conditions and requirements that must
be adhered to. Hospice, by definition, is a
holistic approach to palliative (comfort) care
for the dying. To be medically proficient and
compliant is only a part of the certification
process. Hospice facilities and organizations
must also demonstrate that they provide volunteer services, bereavement care, social services and spiritual care.
Enter Hospice Friends...we are here to assist
in providing some of those latter services in
order that Kittitas Valley Home Health and
Hospice can focus on the social services and
medical needs of their patients.
However, it is important to know that the
relationship between Kittitas Valley Home
Health and Hospice and Hospice Friends is
longstanding and truly unique.
While there are many volunteer based hospice
organizations in Washington State, Hospice
Friends is the only one, to our knowledge,
who enjoys a reciprocal working relationship
with a Medicare Certified provider such as
Kittitas Valley Home Health and Hospice.
This is a relationship that began in 1994 when
Kittitas Valley Community Hospital created
the Home Health and Hospice Department.
The focus of this department is to provide
medical home health and hospice services.
Hospice of Kittitas County, later to become
Hospice Friends, was already operating at that
time providing volunteer support to the elderly and those facing life threatening illnesses.
The formulation of this new department by
the hospital was an opportunity for the perfect
partnership for the two organizations.
In order for a hospice provider to be certified
by Medicare there are, as you might suspect,

For Merle’s memorial service, their granddaughter created a collage of their life together. On this collage, which still hangs in her
home, Marylou has placed post it notes when
she is reminded of one of Merle’s endearing
qualities. Words such as noble, loyal, supportive, courageous, gentle, humble, moral, trustworthy, perseverer, compassionate and
thoughtful are but a few of those words.
She says, 'After Merle’s death, I began to see
him as he had really been. It was less like losing him than discovering him.'
And she continues to “discover” Merle with
each passing day. She discovers a new appreciation for the man who brought such joy to
her life and allowed her to see the character of
her Creator.
She practices gratitude every day that she like
to call “thanksliving”. 'I have found that every
morning I have a choice – to live “under the
circumstance” and sigh with dismay OR live “in
the circumstance” and rejoice…I am learning
that mourning is the outward expression of
the inward feelings of grief. I am learning about
the fact that there is no end to grief, it is not
an event with an end time, but a part of one's
life and gets integrated into life rather than
remaining the main focus. I am asking God to
enable me to grieve appropriately and ade-

quately. I know I can do little more than
trust in God’s mercy and wait for His grace.'
'Some of that mercy I see as I am learning how
precious memories are; Merle reading to me
God’s word; the many Valentine days that
Merle (the romantic) gifted me with many,
many love notes around the house; the times
spent at our cabin in spiritual retreat.'
If there is one message that Marylou would like
to pass along, I believe that it would be: 'Each
one of us has a grieving path to walk and there
is no right way, nor wrong way, just a different
way. There are some aspects that are common for all. I (only) know that I must Fully
Rely On God to take the next step.' <
10th Annual Cruisin’ for Hospice Car Show
On June 6th from 10a.m until 3p.m. the 10th
Annual Cruisin’ for Hospice Car Show will
once again be held in Downtown Ellensburg.
Gene Ketzenburg, organizer of the event, has
advertised the event in Cruzin’ Magazine again
this year and we’ve expanded our list into
three states. We are grateful to the City of
Ellensburg Lodging Tax Advisory for their assistance in advertising the show. We are truly
hoping to attract more cars and bigger crowds
this year.
The car show is guaranteed be a fun event for
everyone. There will be music, raffles, and
prizes for all ages. Prizes have been donated
by local businesses and will include everything
from a round of golf to an oil change to a free
massage. The show is open to any type of
vehicle: antiques, classics, pickups, modern, etc.
The Kittitas County Historical Museum is joining in on the fun this year and has promised to
show some of the antique vehicles from their
collection as well.
All proceeds from the event will go to benefit
Hospice Friends. Registration will be allowed
the day of the show, but please contact the
Hospice Friends office if you would like to preregister your vehicle(s).

Family, friends and neighbors, how lucky we are to have one
another to lean on, one shoulder to the other. I feel compelled to write this letter in regards to some well deserved
people.
To Cathy and Polly and the staff at Hospice and Hospice
Friends know that your support and your efforts are not untold. If you ever think you don’t need them, you are kindly
mistaken.
With their help in the last four months, we have been able to
take care of my husband at home. With their guidance, we
will be fine along with friends and family.
