PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Keyboarding News
Sixth graders are well on their way to meeting Washington’s Common Core Standard for keyboarding (W.6.6), which is “demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of three pages in a single sitting.” To reach this
goal, students are using Keyboard Mastery, an online keyboarding program purchased by the Olympia School District. This is a self-paced program with weekly
goals to encourage adequate progress. Jefferson also provides periodic benchmarks and, if needed, lunchtime practice to keep students moving toward the mastery level. The Olympia School District translates the mastery level to be 25 wpm
or better on a timed test. At the present rate, it is anticipated that most sixth graders will have achieved this keyboarding level by May. As Mrs. Smith, 7th grade
English teacher remarked, “Seventh graders are keyboarding at a rate that has cut
lab time in half over what students were able to accomplish a couple of years ago.
With that extra time, kids are able to learn more information and participate in additional classroom activities.” -Article by Ann Marie Ratliff, Teacher-Librarian
KEYBOARDING ACHIEVEMENT:

Improves testing skills for MAP, MSP, high school, and beyond.

Reduces anxiety when dealing with computers and tasks.

Improves self-esteem and builds confidence.

Reduces time spent on typing papers and allows for easy
corrections.

JSSO INFORMATION
JSSO stands for Jefferson Student Support Organization. JSSO is a parent
group dedicated to Jefferson students and staff. Our primary focus is to earn
money and give support through volunteer hours and financial gifts to the
school. The JSSO operates the student store which is our primary money source and secondary income is gained through the $15 dues that families pay for JSSO membership. We welcome your
comments/questions/ideas and of course your help. Please join us. JSSO meetings are typically the
4th Monday of each month at 5:30 in the staff room.
We are looking for JSSO board members for the 2013-2014 school year.

CHS FRESHMEN ORIENTATION
On Tuesday, August 27th, Capital High School will be hosting a freshman orientation for new
students and their parents. The event runs 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This is an important event that
you won’t want to miss! Information will be presented to help insure a successful transition to CHS.
Students will receive their schedule, have pictures taken, meet their link crew leaders, tour the school
and participate in fun bonding activities. At noon, a barbeque ($3.00 per person) will be held on the
school lawn. Parent orientation is 1:00—1:30 PM. From 6:00- 8:00 PM there is a dance for all 9th
graders at a cost of $5.00.
OVERDUE, LOST BOOKS….COME BACK!
The library is missing books! Please look around the house, under the beds, and in the closets for
JMS library books and textbooks. Statements for overdue library and textbooks will be sent home
after locker cleanout and book return on June 5. Have your student review the overdue list in the
library to make sure there are no library or textbook fines due. Students with fines will not be able to
receive their yearbooks until fines are paid or the books returned. Unpaid fines will follow students to
high school.
IMPORTANT END OF YEAR INFORMATION
The last day of school is Thursday June 13th. Students will be released at 11:05 AM and need to
leave the building at that time. School doors will be closed at 11:30 AM for a staff luncheon and will
reopen for business at 1:30 PM that afternoon.
Fines for lost or damaged books, locker damage, sports fines, or fines still carried from past years
must be paid before school is out. Fine lists will be posted in the school. Please look around the
house for any JMS library books or textbooks. Also check with your student to make sure they do
not have any outstanding fines!
Report cards will be mailed out to families the last week in June.
INCOMING SIXTH GRADERS TO VISIT JMS
5th Grade Students Visit JMS
The 5th graders from Garfield, LP Brown and other potential JMS 6th graders are coming for a
visit! Students will be at Jefferson the afternoon of May 31st with their 5th grade teachers. The
incoming students will have snacks, meet some of the Jefferson staff, and ask questions about
middle school. JMS students will then take 5th grade students on a tour of the school. Fifth
graders will return to their elementary schools before the end of their school day.
2013 SUMMER SCHOOL
OSD Summer School

balloons must be given to students outside of school.
Thanks for your cooperation.
