Major Markets
Why use a Probiotic
Animal performance
growth rates, FCR, egg production, egg fertility.
Animal health
reduced mortality, disease incidence and severity, boost to immune
system, competitive exclusion of pathogens. Gut function
Alleviation of stress
heat stress, dietary changes --- any stress factors.
Modern farm management techniques.
Antibiotic resistance
therapeutic antibiotics for animals
resistance problems for human medicine
Sales and marketing
quality and welfare branding of finished products
export market requirements
International trials evidence to support claims for Protexin for all animals
How do Probiotics work?
1: Competitive exclusion
Attachment sites and for nutrients.
2: Reduction in intestinal pH
Production of lactic acid
3: Modulation of the immune system
Innate immunity
Innate immunity receptors, Toll-like receptors
Lactic Acid
Adaptive immunity
T-helper cells
Modulate balance of Th1, Th2 and Th17 derived cytokines
Mucosal antigen-specific IgA
Adequate production dependent on normal homeostasis of
microflora

Conclusions
• the performance of broilers fed with Protexin Concentrate was better
than those consuming MOS (slaughter weight, daily gain, feed
conversion and production index).
• From the economic standpoint it is beneficial to use Protexin
Concentrate in broiler rations.
• All groups treated with Protexin Concentrate were negative for
salmonella at slaughter.

Pathogenic bacteria reach the digestive system of
birds by passing through the acid barrier of the crop.
High Lactobacillus counts and low pH in the crop
reduces the incidence of potentially pathogenic
bacteria such as Salmonella passing into the intestinal
tract.
The low pH in this study could have contributed to
The general health of these birds.

There is a vast number of undesirable
microbiota in the cecum of normal
chickens and these specifically are from
the family Enterobacteriaceae
which includes such organisms as
Salmonella.
Enterobacteria can cause damage to
intestinal cells and can become
pathogenic if conditions are suitable for
their development

Quicker and lower reduction of

Better intestinal development
seen as improved villi
development
Effect of Protexin on broiler performance and development
Conclusion
Probiotics reduce the pH of the crop contents contributing to a decrease in
enterobacteria in the cecum. Length of villi increased which can lead to better feed
absorption.
