Broughty Ferry Gala Week 2016
1
welcome to gala week 2016
The famous tradition of a Gala Week in Broughty Ferry has been bringing family fun to our
town for over 100 years, making it the longest running Summer Festival in Tayside. Remarkably
four generations of children, parents and grandparents have all enjoyed the ever-popular
beach and park games, pavement art and of course… The Legendary Window Guessing
Competition!
This year’s packed programme of events (see within) include all of these and much more!
And keep a look out for this year’s special Gala Week guest OOR WULLIE who
is enjoying his Summer holiday in the Ferry and will be popping up at various
events to say Hello!
Of course, a town as varied and vibrant as Broughty Ferry offers many great events throughout
the year, from Beer and Music Festivals to a fabulous Food Fayre and the hugely popular
Christmas Lights Night street concert, and more.
After the great success of last year’s inaugural FERRY FOOD FAYRE organised superbly
by Jan McTaggart of Clementine, we are doing it all again at The Woodlands Hotel on
SUNDAY 14th AUGUST 12-4.30. Be sure to come along to this great event celebrating
(and sampling!) the Ferry’s amazing food and hospitality!
See more on page 12 and facebook.com/ferryfoodies
This year saw our first ever Fashion Show held in Woodlands Hotel which was a great success.
Huge thanks to Vivian Scott for co-ordinating the event so successfully which raised £1,000 to
support the YMCA who are celebrating their 150th anniversary this year!
Thanks also must go to all the boutiques in Broughty Ferry, as well as the models who
participated in what really was a show stopping night- very well done one and all!
I must also give special thanks to The Woodlands Hotel, especially Nicky, for their generous
support hosting The Food Fayre and Fashion Show.
And last but not least Graham Baird, Belhaven Brewery our Main Sponsor.
Of course, none of these events would have enjoyed the enormous success they did without
the unwavering support of the fabulous Ferry folk - many, many thanks to you
all, and here’s to another great year in Broughty Ferry!

St James – The Friendly Ferry Church
The members of St James
enjoyed welcoming friends
and visitors to the Church
during Gala Week last year,
so we have decided to
open the Church and Hall
during Gala Week 2016
to welcome back friends
old and new. The Church
and Hall will be open throughout the Week for Rest,
Relaxation and Reflection. The Sunday Services at
11am on 3rd and 10th July will be very family focused
and during the week the Church will be open from
noon to 4pm for quiet Reflection and in the Hall you
will be able to Rest and Relax with a free cup of tea/
coffee or cold drink. A special Golden Monday Café
will take place on 4th July with the usual delicious
afternoon tea and gentle chair exercises. This is
especially for those eligible for a ‘bus pass’. It starts
at 1.30 and the Hall is fully wheelchair accessible.
New for this year is ‘Come and Try’ Carpet Bowls on
Wednesday 6th July from 10am and a ‘Pirate Party’ run
for us by the St James Toddler Group for toddlers and
their primary school brothers and sisters on Thursday
7th. The members and friends of St James would like
welcome local Ferry residents and Gala Week visitors
to join them during the week.
See the Church Notice board and Facebook
page for more information.

the rules
Broughty Gala Week’s legendary Window Guessing Competition, first started way
back in 1932, and the rules are exactly the same today! All the participating shops and
businesses are members of The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association, and have displayed
in their windows an article which they do not sell. The object of the competition is for
young people (under 14) to look at the windows and discover what the ‘odd’ article is. For
instance in the Baker’s shop you might find a teapot or in the newsagent, a paint brush.
Remember, sometimes it will be hard to spot, but children should not go into shops and
ask for clues! The participating shops have a Red Diamond with a number on it in their
window, which corresponds to the number on the entry form on the following page.
