Dollar may have dropped but Canadian
travel overseas hits record high in April
OTTAWA — The loonie’s relative weakness since the end of last year has hit
the profits of Canadian travel companies but it hasn’t stopped Canadian
from heading overseas.
In fact, Canadians are travelling to
countries other than the U.S., the type
most likely to be booked through travel
agencies, in record numbers, according
to Statistics Canada.
Canadian residents took 842,000 trips
to countries other than the United States
in April, up 2.5% and the highest level
since record keeping began in 1972.

Palladium Hotels & Resorts has completed
a $30 million expansion in Punta Cana
Overall, travel between Canada and
other countries increased in both directions in April. Travel by Canadian
residents abroad was up 1.1% and
travel to Canada from other countries
rose 1.8%.
Canadian residents took 4.5 million trips to the United States in April,
up 0.8% from March. This was the
first increase since November 2013,
largely because of a 1.6% rise in sameday car trips and a 2.5% gain in overnight car trips to the United States.
However, these increases were offset
by a 3.7% decrease in overnight plane
travel.
In the other direction, United States
residents made 1.7 million trips to Canada,
up 1.8% from March. Same-day car trips
rose 2.1%. Overnight car (+1.6%) and plane
travel (+2.9%) also increased.
Residents from overseas countries
made 411,000 trips to Canada in April.
There were increases in trips from
eight of the top 12 countries of origin
for overseas visitors to Canada. The
largest percentage increase was in travel
from South Korea (+11.4%) followed
by India (+11.1%). Hong Kong (-18.1%)
and France (-5.4%) posted the largest
declines in travel to Canada.
One reason for the strong numbers
to overseas destinations by Canadian
travellers was the fact that the Easter
holiday period fell in April this year
whereas it was earlier and in March in
2013.

TORONTO — The Travel Agent Next
Door is off to a faster start than expected says founder Flemming Friisdahl
as he showed off the company’s new
headquarters in downtown Toronto.
The organization has signed up some
30 home-based consultants, has a staff
of seven and has signed up 42 preferred
suppliers, the maximum it wants.
At the open house, Friisdahl added
that The Travel Agent Next Door is
also offering marketing and back office
support for bricks and mortar agencies
so the staff can concentrate solely on
selling.
In addition, the organization wants to
make it easier for existing brick and mortar agencies that want to start or expand
a home-based component.

newsletter
TORONTO — The Travelweek Group
launches its brand new, revamped website – Travelweek.ca – now full of all the
information and industry news agents
need, plus a few fun surprises.
In conjunction with the unveiling of
the new site, the daily newsletter has
also been fully revitalized and renamed
the Travelweek Daily providing news to
agents, directly to their e-mail inboxes.
“We are very proud of our new website and newsletter and have put a lot

of time and effort into the content and
design,” says Devin Kinasz, Director of
Digital Strategy, Travelweek. “This is just
one of the many projects underway at
Travelweek to ensure that our digital
and online offerings are in line with
what agents need to do their job more
efficiently and effectively.”
Besides the sleek and user-friendly design, the new website will have a lot more
content available to keep agents informed.
Significantly more news stories will be
posted per day, plus the site has a more
comprehensive listing of FAMs, events and
jobs in the Marketplace section.
Travelweek Deals, which was
launched last year and is a tool for
agents to find supplier deals, incentives,
promotions and seat sales, has gained
a lot of momentum. It now has up to
100 or more live deals at any given time,
providing a perfect resource for agents
to peruse current specials and agent incentives currently being offered by the
large suppliers, as well as small hotels
and boutique tour operators.
“Travelweek Deals has been a great
product for us and is a very important
part of the new website,” says Kinasz. “It
gives agents a great place to look for a
consolidated list of all the specials and
agents incentives happening in the industry at any given time.”
The new website will also feature a dynamic blog section with specialized categories such as Industry Experts, Friday
Five and On Location giving agents industry information they need, as well as more
light-hearted ones such as Annie on the
Run, Bloopers and Travel Freely.
“My favourite new blog is the Bloopers,”
laughs Kinasz. “We have compiled some
of the funniest travel stories, customer
complaints, images and cartoons from

MADRID — CyberSource, a Visa Inc.
company and one of the world’s leading providers of eCommerce payment
management services, has formed a
strategic global partnership with Amadeus to bring an integrated travel reservation and fraud management solution
to airlines, travel agencies and other
travel organizations worldwide.
Leveraging CyberSource’s global expertise in fraud management, the innovative solution integrates a fraud
management system, Decision Manager, into the dedicated travel Amadeus
Payment Platform (APP).
Decision Manager can help travel
organizations globally accept more legitimate bookings, while identifying
potential fraudulent transactions and
lowering operational costs.
The combined solution will help
travel businesses worldwide maximize
revenue, reduce costs and improve the
customer payment experience across
multiple channels, such as online, mobile, face to face and call centre.
“We are delighted with the integration
of CyberSource to the Amadeus Payment
Platform for travel,” said Celia Pereiro,
Head of Travel Payments at Amadeus.
“This will provide our customers with a
customized and enriched travel-payment
fraud solution, helping them to optimize
business operations; increasing acceptance rates and facilitating a smooth consumer payment process.”
Simon Stokes, Head of CyberSource
EMEA & APAC, said, “With a track record
of delivering results for major airlines,
travel agencies, hotel chains and other
travel suppliers, we are excited to partner with Amadeus to help provide travel
companies and their customers with a
fast, safe and seamless buying experience,
irrespective of device or location.”
CyberSource Decision Manager assists
travel companies in identifying fraud faster, more accurately and with less manual
intervention. Data insights are derived via
sophisticated modeling of more than 60
billion transactions that Visa Inc. and CyberSource process annually worldwide,
including transactions across multiple
payment types and sales channels, spanning online, call centre and mobile. The
transaction data is supplemented by 260
detector tests and time-tested statistical
risk models, which can be localized by
region to further expand the depth and
breadth of transaction pattern visibility.

NÎMES, France — Air Transat’s new Toronto-Marseille flights have made it easier
to discover the fields of lavender, the landscapes that inspired great painters and
the wine and food of southern France.
But this region also sports some of the
most spectacular artifacts from Roman
times. And, unlike many sites from ancient
Rome that are in ruins, many of those in
this part of France are in pretty good shape.
A short drive from Marseille-Provence

for the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple
from the first century dedicated to the
adopted sons of the Emperor Augustus.
Built of limestone from nearby quarries,
it is the only fully-preserved temple
from the ancient world and has been
used over the centuries as a city hall,
horse stall, church for monks and an archeological museum.
Nearby is an understated contemporary art museum designed by Sir Norman Foster that doesn’t compete with
or try to overshadow the temple but
actually reflects it.
On the top floor of the Musée le Carré d’Art with a panoramic view over the
city is Le Ciel de Nîmes, a top restaurant
specializing in regional cuisine.
Nîmes is known for its annual bullfighting festivals or feria and one of the
centres of the activities is the Hotel Imperator, right in the centre of town.

Throughout the museum, multimedia technology accurately recreates

A few miles from Nîmes is the bestpreserved part of the world’s most famous aqueduct – the Pont du Gard
with its 49 arches, part of a 50-kilometre construction which brought water
to Nîmes over bridges and through tunnels with a change in altitude of only 17
metres.
Recreational activities such as hiking
and kayaking are readily available as is a
museum which gives a comprehensive
look at the history of the site.
The museum also looks at the genius
of Roman engineering and how it transported water across the Roman Empire
while a huge illuminated map gives the
visitor a guide to the principal aqueducts in the empire.
Another section of the museum recreates the construction site with lifesized reconstructions of the Pont du
Gard’s quarries, its canal and two of the
arches on its third level, showing how a
combination of planning, ingenuity and
technical skill went into the construction of the site.
Overlooking the exhibition is a giant
screen showing the path taken by the
channelled water.
Finally there is a modern history of
the Pont du Gard with scientists and
historians from the past and the present comparing their observations.
One gallery features the quarrels
about old and new techniques during
the 19th-century debate on the restoration of Nîmes’ Roman canal.
Another features a panorama displaying the various repairs and restorations
of the Pont du Gard from the Middle
Ages through to modern day France.

From luxe amenities to free weddings
for groups, Mélia Hotels has it all
by Cindy Sosroutomo
Meliá Hotels International knows how to
pull off the kind of destination wedding
couples dream about. Just ask Nanor
Apikian, Meliá Cuba Wedding Specialist, who says the company celebrates
three types of weddings: Civil, Renewal
of Vows, and Symbolic, all of which are
ultra-romantic and hassle-free.
“Brides and grooms can expect the
wedding planning to be very simple. I
assist the travel agents every step of the
way and am here to answer any question
they may have. I make sure that the bride
and groom send in copies of all the required documents and forward them to
the on-site wedding coordinators. I also
communicate all of the clients’ special
requests to the hotel,” she says.
According to Apikian, customization is
key when it comes to planning a destination wedding. More and more couples
are interested in “doing something special
or unique on their wedding day, such as
getting married on an island or a virgin
beach,” which is possible for an additional
fee at properties in Cayo Largo and Cayo
Guillermo. In Cayo Guillermo, for example, Apikian says couples can marry
underwater at the new Meliá Marina
Varadero, or enjoy an intimate ceremony
or private cocktail on a catamaran.
And since the best things in life are often
free, Meliá also offers a free wedding package for groups. Suggest one of the three
upscale Paradisus Resorts in Cuba for those
travelling with as few as 10 guests to receive
a free wedding package that includes notary fees, room upgrade, musicians during
the ceremony, the rehearsal and wedding
dinners, late checkout and more. Also
available at Paradisus Resorts is the Royal
Service, which is best described as an exclusive hotel within the resort. At the heart of
it all are luxury all-suite accommodations
enhanced by butler service.
If your clients choose a Meliá Hotel for
their wedding, which is in fact the com-
pany’s most famous brand for weddings,
their free wedding package with as few
as 15 guests will include many valueadded items. The Level rooms, offered
on exclusive floors of selected Meliá
Hotels, will allow clients to enjoy similar
amenities as the Royal Service available
at Paradisus Resorts.
And if you’re wondering which resort
is the most popular for destination weddings, Apikian points to Meliá Las Dunas. This upscale property is followed by
Paradisus Varadero Resort & Spa, Meliá
Peninsula Varadero, Meliá Cayo Santa
Maria, Meliá Cayo Guillermo, Sol Palmeras and Sol Rio de Luna y Mares.
Meliá Hotels International offers 27 hotels on the island of Cuba and is considered
a wedding and honeymoon specialist on
the island. From adults-only to familyfriendly properties, the company’s wide
choice of properties allows couples to plan
the perfect wedding suited to their needs.

Grecian Holidays
covers all the

Turkey tour
With a destination as ancient and
wonderfully mysterious as Turkey,
travellers often need a bit of guidance
as to what to see and do during their
stay. Grecian Holidays takes the guesswork out of planning by including all
the must-see attractions in its 11-day
‘Essential Turkey’ tour.
“When planning this tour, we really
wanted to capture the true essence and
spirit of this exciting destination,” said
John Andreopoulos, President of Grecian Holidays. “So we made sure to include all the spectacular sights Turkey
has to offer, and also threw in plenty of
local mouthwatering cuisine and top
notch accommodations.”
Kicking off in Istanbul, ‘Essential
Turkey’ begins with a half-day tour
that visits the Hagia Sophia (the largest church of its era), the Blue Mosque,
800.387.0711
the Byzantine Hippodrome and the
Grand Bazaar, the world’s largest covered market featuring more than 4,000
shops. From there the itinerary continues to the capital city of Ankara where
travellers will tour the Hittite Museum and Ataturk’s Mausoleum before
departing for Cappadocia. While en
route, they’ll stop at picturesque Salt
Lake for beautiful views.
While in Cappadocia, there’ll be
plenty of photo ops at the Valley
of Uchisar, the Pasabag Valley and
the Goreme Valley, home to ancient
churches adorned with preserved
frescoes. Travellers will also visit Kaymakli (or Derinkuyu), one of the most
famous underground cities in the
world, and visit a local cooperative to
learn about the production of Turkish
carpets and handicrafts.

MARKETING PLANS MUST INCLUDE
SOCIAL MEDIA
By JILL WYKES
IN THIS COLUMN WE WILL
EXPLORE SOCIAL MEDIA AS A
CHANNEL FOR HOME-BASED
TRAVEL AGENTS TO REACH AND
KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THEIR
CUSTOMERS.
The first thing that is important to stress,
is that social media will NOT reach all
your customers. We all know the diehard
“I will never be on Facebook” people and
many more who wouldn’t have a clue how
to tweet. Never mind Pinterest, Reddit, Instagram and many, many more that many
people have never heard of.
And yet the younger generation relies heavily on social media, and so do some of their
parents. You can’t afford to ignore this channel. And what’s more, it’s essentially free.
Now if this is sending you into a mild
panic, relax! Many host agencies have addressed social media as part of their marketing programs. You will hear the word
tossed about a lot. But some offer far more
comprehensive social media marketing
tools and technology than others, so when
you are looking for a host agency, be sure to
really explore how they will help you reach
your clients and potential clients using social media.
And, most important, ask what the
cost is for the templates and technology
to do so.
First, you will need your own website.
Then ask your host agency if they can provide you with the ability to post messages to
a lot of social media sites simultaneously.
Do they provide templates for the social
media sites? How easy is it to create your
message or flyer? Are there social media-

appropriate messages for you to adapt as
your own?
Social media messages need to be short,
to the point, funny, clever or poignant, and
need to attract attention. Does your host
agency help you with this? Social media is

not the place for hard sell, so you will need
to tailor your messages to fit the medium.
Instead of “Punta Cana hotel & flight
$599”, you will want something more along
the lines of “Office getting you down? We can
have you on the beach next week for $599
#bestagentever” [email protected]”
You get the idea. The key is to ask all the
right questions of your host agency so you
can tap into this amazing marketing tool.

Bangkok hotels take
a hit, but the rest of
Thailand continues
to grow
BANGKOK — It will come as no surprise that hotel performance in Thailand has been negatively affected by the
recent political turmoil, but the rest of
the country seems relatively unscathed.
These are the key facts shown in the latest Asia Pacific hotel performance report
produced by STR Global and Horwath
HTL that has been released last week. The
reports combine the reporting power of
STR Global, the world’s largest supplier
of hotel performance data, with the local
market knowledge provided by Horwath
HTL Hotel experts, part of the worlds
largest hospitality consulting brand.
Other key points in the report shows
that regardless of the unrest, all markets in
Thailand managed to make year on year
gains in average room rate for the first
quarter, with the luxury sector making
the biggest gains, although at the expense
of occupancy. On the supply side, the up-
scale segment is expected to experience
the most significant growth in the country,
with the pipeline showing the majority of
these coming in the branded segment.
A copy of the report can be downloaded from horwathhtl.com/publica
tions or strglobal.com.
Ambika Gandhi, the consultant at Horwath HTL who co-wrote the report said,
“The results show a resilience of a market
place that has perhaps become used to the
short term impact of political unrest. What
is also clear is that these impacts have had
far less effect on regional Thailand, which
has a very strong leisure industry. We expect to have a much clearer view of what
the rest of the year will be like once the
elections have taken place in July.”
“Bangkok has suffered the most significant declines in demand of all Thai
markets with demand down almost
30% in Q1, while ADR remained flat for
the capital,” said Elizabeth Winkle, managing director of STR Global. “With declining demand, we would expect ADR
to begin to weaken unless the political
unrest comes to an end,” she continued.
“Contrary to the trends in the capital,
the resort markets have seen a strong
increase in ADR, most significantly in
the Luxury segment, leading to a positive RevPAR performance for these
markets.”

is simple. “Every morning I wake up, look
in the mirror and say, ‘Today is my first day
of work.’” Perhaps that is why, 18 years later,
his enthusiasm and passion for ensuring
that guests receive a first-class dining experience continues to be a success.
With five bars including the 24-hour
Sports Bar equipped with pool tables

places to sit back and enjoy a cocktail. If
late night dancing is on the agenda, guests
can head to Pacha night club for Latin and

“Panama is the first country in the
entire RIU collection to offer guests a
combined city and beach holiday experience through Signature Vacations,
and we’re very excited about it,” said
Virginia Casado Castillo, Press Manager
America, RIU Hotels & Resorts.
Day excursions include swimming and
snorkelling at Farallon Island, zip-lining
through rainforest canopies, swimming
in natural pools and visiting local markets
and communities to see artisans at work
creating the famous Panama hat, carved
woods and soapstone figures.
Excursions are available through trusted
tour operators. “What makes the day excursions so different in Panama is the authenticity of them. Travellers are taken to
the actual communities of local artisans to
see them working in their natural environ-

ment. It’s a humbling experience guests
won’t soon forget,” said Casado Castillo.
While in Panama City guests can visit
the Panama Canal, walk the picturesque
streets of the historical neighbourhood
of Casco Viejo (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), as well as enjoy a trendy selection of restaurants, cafés, night clubs,
shopping and art galleries.
Riu Playa Blanca is located 150 kilometres from Tocumen International
Airport. The newly built Scarlett Martinez International Airport is five kilometres from the resort and is scheduled to
open later this year.
Signature offers all-inclusive vacation
packages to Panama with weekly direct
flights on Friday from Toronto with their
Sunwing Airlines’ Champagne Service.
Monday direct flights to Panama City will
run Dec. 15 to April 27, 2015. Seasonal
