B1 HIGHLIGHTS
B2 HIGHLIGHTS
Franz Welser-Möst opens this series
with a truly spectacular orchestral
masterpiece that perfectly
captures the thrill of a hike in the
Alps. Symphonies by Schubert,
Mozart, and Haydn will delight you
with sublime, beautiful melodies.
And two of classical music’s
most exciting artists, Frank Peter
Zimmermann and Truls Mørk, ensure
evenings of dazzling virtuosity.
Legendary pianist Yefim Bronfman
returns to play a beloved concerto
by Beethoven. Two works by
Strauss highlight this series: Also
sprach Zarathustra (popularized
by 2001: A Space Odyssey) and
his wry, ironic A Hero’s Life. Franz
Welser-Möst directs an evening of
Bartók, featuring the Joffrey Ballet.

Bartók’s only opera, Bluebeard’s

ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin,
performed by the Joffrey Ballet.
Also featured is the return of pianist
Mitsuko Uchida, continuing her
acclaimed collaboration with The
Cleveland Orchestra performing,
conducting, and recording the
extraordinary concertos of Mozart.
Two choral masterworks highlight
these concerts; Handel’s glorious
celebration of the life of Christ
rings with joy and conviction,
while Verdi’s masterpiece is more
conflicted, more ambiguous. Then,
discover another symphony by
Antonín Dvořák, the composer of
the "New World" Symphony.

Maria João Pires, piano
Acclaimed as one of the greatest
pianists of our time, Maria João
Pires is an artist who combines
exquisite stylistic refinement with
a remarkable ability to express the
intellectual complexities and spiritual
depths of music. As a performer,
her vast, nuanced emotional range
and tone encompass a dizzying
variety of intensities, from an almost
imperceptible lightness to an
imposing monumentality. She makes
a rare appearance in Cleveland for an
all-Beethoven evening.
Julien Brocal appears as part of Maria João
Pires’s Partitura Project, a program designed
to create opportunities for young musicians
to share the concert platform with well-known
artists, encouraging the transmission of
knowledge from one generation of pianists to
the next, and introducing audiences to these
upcoming artists.
