This small kindergarten (about 520m2) is situated in the
University of Utrecht district, just east of the city of Utrecht in
The Netherlands. Its Dutch name, 'De Kleine Kikker', translates as
'The Little Frog' in English. It was built by Drost + van Veen
architecten between a monumental farmhouse and a wooden
stable; architecturally 'De Kleine Kikker' wedges itself as a
modern little farmhouse between these two historic buildings. Its
front façade references to the farm it is located next to; the back
façade has a much more modern appearance. Its façades are clad
in partially coloured wooden beams, while the roof is made of
aluminium. 'De Kleine Kikker' is recognizable because of it's
forms, but surprises at the same time by combining unexpected
materials.

The new Faculty of Science is located as a freestanding building
on a prominent site of the University Utrecht campus.
Approximately half of the building contains laboratories and the
rest provides education and work space on various and open
floors, grouped around the central hall. This atrium-like space is
directed to the outside in a covered outdoor area with an open
classroom, where there is an opportunity of open air events. The
'oval' free-standing building, as an island on this area, is on the
border between the inside and provides all opportunities for
meetings, which all contribute to social cohesion.

The small pavilion-like laboratory building for the NMR (Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance) Facility is located on the Uithof Campus of
Utrecht University. The two-floor column free laboratory houses
eight spectrometers (high-frequency magnets). This influenced
decisively the spatial layout of the building, because the radiate
force fields these magnets produce may not be disturbed. The
building consists of a single concrete surface, which continues
from floor plane into the wall and ceiling. The flipping-over
surfaces are constructive and are thus not traversed by a
secondary support structure of columns. Windows with integrated
sun shading, a silk-screened dot pattern, are placed in office- and
laboratory spaces, allowing daylight to enter.

The Utrecht University Campus, according to its best tradition,
gives birth to another provocative and irreverent building: the
BasketBar, which consists of a flat basket ground over a grand
café room, as 15 x 15 meters flat extension of the previous
bookstore, just on the back of the OMA's Educatorium. In the
early 90's, OMA prepared the master plan for the renewed
University Campus, which encompasses a lot of Dutch Second
Modernity's exemplary buildings such as Mecanoo's Faculty of
Economics and Management, Neutelings Riedijk's Minnaert
Building, UN Studio's NMR Laboratory and OMA's Educatorium. All
these buildings are spread on a large site called De Uithof at the
edge of the city, hosting about 30.000 among staff and students.
The BasketBar, together with the Educatorium, represented the
only extensive meeting place for all this population, until the
large black library was built.

To increase the capacity of two existing power stations on the
Uithof in Utrecht, a new building (6000m3) appeared. The size
and construction of the building are largely determined by the
technical requirements. A skin of self-supporting Cor-ten steel is
folded over the machinery and the giant filters and dampers and
keeps the noise pollution to a minimum. Its silhouette differs
according to one's perspective, lending the building a sculptural
force in the landscape.

Situated in the centre of the University Campus the Uithof, just
outside the centre of Utrecht, this building is most famous for its
use of concrete. The concrete construction of the building folds
and forms the floor, wall and ceiling in one curved motion. In the
ceiling, steel reinforcement bars emerge from the exposed
concrete slab. Steel and concrete dissociate allowing each
material to work at optimum efficiency: the 20cm thick concrete
slab is made to span 21 metres. "Composed of two planes which
fold to accommodate a range of distinct programs including an
outdoor plaza, two lecture halls, cafeteria and a testing facility.
Planes interlock to create a single trajectory in which the entire
university experience – socialization, learning, examination – is
encapsulated." Bad detailing or lack of proper maintenance has
caused the facade to look old and worn out, even after a couple
of years.

This black box is both praised and hated. Let’s hear the
architect: “It is a place where people can work in a concentrated
fashion, but also one where they can meet others without the
need of any other stimulation except the atmosphere that the
building radiates. The book depots divide the space into zones
interconnected by stairs and slopes. All in black figured concrete
on which a partly double-glazed facade to which a silk-screened
figurative pattern has been applied in order to let natural light
in. Based on the idea that silent communication is important in a
building where there is hardly any talking, the atmosphere had
emphasis on creating a sense of security. That was essential for
choosing a black interior. A light, shiny floor provides enough
reflection to illuminate the books and white tables make it
possible to read. The bar, lounge, reception, auditorium, desks,
are all fitted with red rubber, thereby breaking down the
mono-functionality of the library program.

All circulation space of this central university building has been
concentrated in one big hall on the "piano nobile" of the building.
It constitutes the communal gathering place and living room for
all staff and students in this part of the campus and gives access
to the restaurant, the study centre and the laboratories. In the
middle the hall has a large pond of 10 x 50 metres that collects
the rainwater and is used as a cooling device for the building.
This hall is actually outside. The facade of the building is clad
with undulating sprayed concrete of pigmented red earth color.
The Minnaert Building is part of the Faculties of Geosciences,
Physiscs and Astronomy. Hence the ‘brown’ earthy colors on the
outside, and the cave-like feeling that arouses in the central hall.
Prof.dr. Marcel Gilles Jozef Minnaert (Brugge, 1893) was
astronomic and chemo-physicist.
