Home Builders Association of West Florida • June 2011
Membership Drive 2011
There are times throughout the year that I am especially
proud to be a member of the
Home Builders Association of
West Florida. This past week
where I saw builders and associates alike compete in the Membership Drive made be stop and
appreciate the work of volunteers
who truly care about the future
of our association. Yes, times are
tough in our industry. Yes, it is hard to recruit
a member. And yes, people could have made
excuses as to why they were not participating
in the drive. But all of this didn’t matter and I
This is a massive undertaking to get
this event organized and ready to go, and I
would like to thank HBA Membership/Marketing Director Amy Lord and Accounting
Manager Alecia Overman for their work on this
drive. We are fortunate to have such dedicated
staff at the HBA and I am very much appreciative of their efforts.
I would also like to thank Gary and
Cindy Sluder of Gene’s Flooring Coverings, for
cooking delicious shrimp at the Monday, May
16 kick-off party that was held in the Cordova
Square Courtyard.
A special thank you to Jim Harris,
Billy Moore, of Southern Home and Construction; Bill Daniel, of Mobile Lumber; Thomas

thoroughly enjoyed watching grown men and
women acting like they didn’t have a care in
the world while they called upon their competitors and business associates to join the HBA.
I would like to thank Membership
Committee Chair Jim Harris, of Coastal Bank
and Trust, for his dedication to the overall
membership of the HBA and for his dedication
to the 2011 Membership Drive. In January,
Jim came to a membership meeting where
there was one in attendance, and that was him!
He didn’t give up and he kept on pushing and
asking others for help. This past week was a
culmination of his perseverance to better our
association. In just two action-packed days, a

daughter had the password to the computer
and he couldn’t write a check without the
code. So Bill went to Sacred Heart to meet
the daughter. Now that’s dedication!
Moving forward, I would encourage
all members to continue to keep membership in the forefront and to take the time
to ask someone who is not a member to
join. As we’ve learned during the drive, all
someone could say is no. But a lot more
said yes!
Celebrity Homes; and Johnny Fayard, of the
Pensacola News Journal for stepping up to the
plate to be our fearless team captains.
I was in awe of the helpful and determined nature of all who participated. To give
you an example of determination, Bill Daniel
called a prospective member who said that
his daughter was in Sacred Heart Hospital in
the labor and delivery section. Apparently, his

HBA Builder of the Year
Mark Porter Finds the
Delicate Balance of
Family, Work and Fun
As he describes his work,
2010 Home Builders Association
of West Florida Builder of the
Year Mark Porter, of Paragon
Custom Home Group, sweeps his
arm around this office indicating
floor plans on every surface: on his
desk, draped over chairs, rolled up in containers. He has drawn each one. “There isn’t a day
that I don’t work
on floor plans,” he
says. But his work
is not boring. His
passion shows as he
describes how his
ideas will go from a
floor plan on a piece
of paper, to a home
someone will enjoy
for years to come.
Growing
up in Baltimore,
Maryland, much of
his time was spent
hunting and fishing
with his father, an
outdoorsman. At
the age of 18, Porter
joined the Air Force
to become a flight
test engineer and
earned a degree in
engineering.
After
being in the service
for six years, he
was becoming restless and wanted to do
something different, so he pursued a career in
real estate with Abbott Realty in Ft. Walton
Beach and Destin. Following his employment
with Abbott, he was recruited by the Arvida
Development Company, and he quickly moved
up to sales manager and became more involved
project management.
Porter would go on to work for a
few more development companies, and he was
starting to feel restless and wanted to grow
professionally in the construction business. His
career took a turn in 1999 when he met North-

west Florida builder Milton
Rogers, of Celebrity Homes.
Although they were competitors in the real estate field,
they quickly became friends.
Rogers invited Porter, who was
the Division President of D.R.
Horton Homes, to join him and
the two bought the assets in
Pensacola from D.R. Horton,
thus Paragon Custom Homes
was born.
Their

Environmentally friendly

Fiddler’s Walk
neighborhood
brings environmentally friendly
homes to Escambia
Written By Jamie Page
First recycling,
then came rain barrel and
composting workshops, and
then the county built its first
environmentally green certified building with a green
roof.
Now, Escambia
County is on its way to
having its first National Association of Home Builder's
designated "Green Certified
Neighborhood."
Construction
on Fiddler's Walk is now
under way on West Roberts Road, a block west
of Pine Forest Road, where several energyefficient homes are being constructed.
"Today's home buyers are becoming
increasingly aware of green building practices
and are seeking homes that are more energyefficient and have a smaller environmental
impact," said Jeff Godfrey, a spokesman for
Paragon Custom Home Group and Celebrity
Home Builders.
They are two of the primary homebuilders on the job, along with J. Taylor Homes
Inc. Escambia County Commissioner Kevin
White, whose district includes the new community, said it was unexpected when the commission recently was asked to approve the final
plat for the subdivision. It was unanimously
approved, but White was surprised because
home construction has been so slow in the past
several years as the market is flooded with
existing homes for sale.
"It sounds like a great project," White
said. "I don't know what the demand is for
green homes in Escambia County, but green is
the new buzzword. I guess everything is going
green now."
Jaime Granat of J. Taylor Homes
said the demand is out there, even in Escambia
County.
"We feel that green building is the way of
the future," Granat said. "Home buyers will
want this to become the standard, and we look
forward to the opportunity to offer buyers what
they want."
The subdivision, which will include
47 homes, is expected to be complete within
the next 18 months, said Leslie Perino, a
spokeswoman for the project.
Once the homes are complete, Larry
Hunter, senior marketing representative for
Energy Services of Pensacola, will certify them
as meeting NAHB guidelines.
The NAHB Green Building Certification assures homeowners and the community that projects are truly "green" and
meet the requirements of the NAHB National
Green Building Standard. The guidelines are
extensive and multiple steps are required for a
project to be certified.
To date, 19 single-family homes in
Florida have been green certified by the NAHB
Research Center, according to the NAHB
Research Center.

Williams Realty Makes
a Difference for Gulf
Coast Kid’s House
May 12th is an annual
celebration and day of service for
Keller Williams Realty offices all
over the country – called RED
Day. RED Day - (Renew, Energize and
Donate) is an initiative dedicated to celebrating
Keller Williams Realty’s year-round commitment to improving our local communities. Each
year, on the second Thursday in May, tens of
thousands of associates from across the United
States and Canada participate in a wide range of
projects, devoting their time to renewing and energizing aspects of the neighborhoods in which
they serve.
This year, the local Keller Williams
Realty Pensacola office chose Gulf Coast Kid’s
House as their RED Day recipient. Gulf Coast
Kid’s House is Escambia County’s only child
advocacy center, responsible for the investigation, treatment and prosecution of over 1200

In construction, a spike is a steel object that is essential to making a building strong. As in construction,
the HBA of West Florida sees a Spike as someone
that works to keep our association strong. Spikes
work on the recruitment and retention of members
in addition to keeping members active with the
association. Anyone is eligible for Spike status.
On Spike credit is awarded for each new member
recruited and an additional credit is awarded for that
new member’s renewal on or before their anniversary
date. If you help to retain a member, you are eligible
to receive a half point for each member.
