The new DVD “Old Iron” is a great introduction to the salad days of the sport for the benefit of those who were not lucky enough to live it the first time around, and a fun look back for those who were. The production is based on footage shot with Stefanson at the gigantic 2009 Waconia, Minnesota, Vintage Ride-In, one of the biggest annual snowmobile events of any kind. Cuts to other contemporary Vintage events are interspersed with footage from vintage Arctic Cat and Polaris promotional films, clips from ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” and other period pieces to provide a tapestry of historic, fast, rare, beautiful, mundane and sometimes just plain strange old snow machines. Vintage racing from Eagle River echoes the glory days. Compared to the 1937 Eliason Motor Toboggan the racing on Dollar Lake near Eagle River looks fast and furious. Things really pick up when the video shows the original Sno Pro circuit and some of the fabulous speed record machines. See the famed Polaris Thrill Team featuring Ted Otto’s flaming barrier crash and Larry “The Looper” Rugland doing his thing. Hear from industry pioneers like Edgar Hetteen on building early snow machines and Les Pinz showing historic models. One of my favorite moments was hearing a 35-mile cross-country race described as a marathon. Assembled by Braaap Films, it’s a 75-minute look at the fastest growing part of the Content 1.8/2 sport is $29.95.
