Newsletter Autumn 2015
Our Light up a Life services give us
the opportunity to remember and
celebrate life in a special way.
For more information see page 5
St Kentigern, your hospice, I am glad to say continues to
make good progress. Progress ensured by the outstanding
efforts of our staff, volunteers and of course the stead fast
support of the community.
The last 6 months have been eventful, with the
redevelopment of the site in full swing around us. We were
quite apprehensive of what might happen but the developer
has been an excellent neighbour thus far. In addition
Denbighshire County Council and it’s officers have provided
vital support.
You will see from articles in the newsletter that fundraising
continues to develop, there are a number of important staff
changes; and investment in to the building and new
equipment continues.
It is very difficult (and invidious) to pick out particular
Fundraising efforts but in recent months we have seen the
contrast between the long running and continuous support
the Rhuddlan Golf club’s charity day, and an innovative trip to
China. This represents just what needs building on solid
foundations and introducing new ideas.
Chairman, Trefor Jones
New CEO, Iain Mitchel
In a broader issue I welcome the developing debate on the
issue of end of life care. The tragedy in that it arises from a
number of personal and organisational disasters. It seems to
me that need for the hospice movement with it’s ‘safe haven’
will increasingly be the way forward.
Finally earlier in the year Ian Bellingham, our CEO, retired
after making an outstanding contribution in the
establishment of sound management arrangements for the
hospice. I am very happy to tell you that Mr Iain Mitchel,
former Director of Therapies for Betsi Cadwaladr University
Health Board, will be joining us as CEO in October. Iain will be
leading us in our next important phase in the evolving world
of healthcare.
Thank you all again for helping us to help the families of our
community.
Trefor Jones CVO CBE

Well we made it! Nineteen of us left on a dull Saturday morning in May for our journey to
Beijing and the start of our adventure. Away in China for 8 days and trekking the Great Wall for
5 of them, we were excited but apprehensive.
Most of us had met one another as we had been on training walks together, but there were a
couple who were new to the group. That didn’t matter though as we soon bonded and the
camaraderie maintained throughout the whole trip and beyond.
After a day to acclimatise, we set off on the first of our days trekking. This was supposed to be a
warm up, but the heat surprised us and affected quite a few. Nevertheless, we soldiered on,
buoyed up by one another and after it were ready to face the following day – a gruelling 9 hour
trek. Again, the heat of the day was a trial as there was very little shade on the section of the
wall we were trekking but we all made it to the bitter end. By Thursday, we were seasoned
trekkers and well able to tackle the 1,000 steps and Heavenly Ladder. Sadly, it was a misty day
so the view from the top was disappointing but our mood could not be dampened as this marked
another landmark we had achieved.
Friday was the last day on the wall and an emotional one as this as the day we repaired a
section of the wall, placing our messages to loved ones within it. We were also sad to say
goodbye to the Great Wall of China, feeling we could have carried on trekking for at least
another week. However the aim of the whole thing was to raise money for the hospice and we
certainly did that, almost doubling our original target of £30,000!!

The hospice is very pleased to welcome Elinor Evans onto the clinical team. Elinor will replace Kathi Unsworth as
an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and will work alongside Dinah our Senior Advanced Nurse Practitioner. She brings
a great deal of experience as an Advanced Practitioner and will be of great benefit to the hospice. We wish all the
best to Kathi who has gone to join the team in Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham.
We also welcome Dr Marlise Poolman, Consultant in Palliative Medicine. Marlise joins Dr Shuler in supporting the
hospices nurse led model, 4 sessions weekly.
There are changes in the staff of the day therapies unit as well. Bethan Owen Booth has left to spend more time
with her family and concentrate on teaching. Mark Hall a very experienced palliative care occupational therapist
will taking her place in leading the service. The unit is open 4
days weekly, each day with a different theme. Art therapy
student Rachel Roberts is making a great impact, providing our
patients with a unique way of understanding and coming to
terms with any problems that they may have.
Yet another new comer to the team is Vita who takes the place
of Leisha Burns as social worker to the hospice. Vita has
enthusiasm and fantastic problem solving skills and is an
absolute boon to the team.
2 of our staff nurses, Kate & Rhian
joined the group of trekkers that
ventured along the Great wall of
China. The trek, which not only
raised a huge sum of money but
was a life changing experience for
them. They had a fantastic time
going on to spend a week
sightseeing in China.
The hospice is working in partnership with the
Royal College of Nursing with a recognition
agreement of support offered to nursing and
residential homes, by providing education in
palliative, so that they can offer the best care to
their residents. The hospice also contributes to
a 6 steps programme of education to
residential homes, community hospitals and
nursing homes.
The renown of the nurse led model of care spreads with the hospice being approached by 2 ladies setting up a
hospice in Kyrgyzstan. It was fascinating to hear about the country and all the challenges that they have been
encountering. We wish them all the best in their endeavour.
‘Swallows’ the volunteer supported group for
patients who have moved on from day
therapies still operates every Friday. Lunch and
complimentary
therapies
are
provided
alongside the social activities.
Dying Matters Week. Neil Goulding day therapies activities
co-ordinator and Kath Evans administration support spent
the week amongst our community in shopping centres
asking people what they know about the hospice and service
we provide. This was an invaluable exercise and will help us
to respond to our community in the most appropriate way.
St Kentigern Hospice continues to develop and adapt to the changing needs of its community, whilst
delivering excellence in end of life care, symptom control, respite and enabling people to live life to the
best of their capacity in spite of a life limiting illness.

Colwyn Bay
Our Colwyn Bay shop which was originally opened in 2000, was relocated just
next door to larger premises where we are able to sell small pieces of furniture
which has proved to be a great success.
Ruthin
Ruthin shop was opened in 2002, earlier this year the shop had a re-fit and was
reopened in March which has proved very popular with our volunteers and the
general public.
Denbigh
Denbigh was one of our earliest shops to open we relocated in September 2011 to
the High Street which proved popular with all our customers and volunteers. We
recently carried out a small refit and reopened in January.
As from April 2015 we have introduced
our Retail Gift Aid scheme, collecting Gift
Aid on
donated goods, (furniture and
electrical goods) helping us gain an extra
25p in the pound on the net sale of the
purchase price from the HMRC.
After the success of our first Pop
Up shop in Rhyl we have opened
our second Pop Up shop in
Towyn in June this year.
In the first 3 months have proved very
successful and with everyone’s support
we hope the success will continue. All
you need to do is when you are
telephoning the depot to say you have
an item of furniture or electrical goods
that you would like collecting, mention
that you are a UK taxpayer and would like
to take part in our Retail Gift Aid scheme,
the volunteers will fill in a form and when

the sales of our paperback and hard

But thanks to the hard work of our
volunteers Beryl, Dilys and Ann our
book section at the Bodelwyddan
Distribution Centre continues to thrive.
