ANNUAL REPORT
Fiscal Year 2010
July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010
silvermine guild arts center
Letter from the Chairman of the Board and Executive Director
The Silvermine Mission statement says it all:
Grounded in the belief that art is vital to the spirit, creativity and
wholeness of human beings, the mission of Silvermine Guild Arts Center
is to cultivate, promote and encourage growth through the arts; to show
case and serve artists; to foster arts education and appreciation
opportunities for the greater community.
Today, the Silvermine Guild Arts Center, a 501(c) (3) organization, is comprised of a Guild of over 300 professional artists, five galleries presenting
new exhibitions every six weeks and sponsoring prestigious regional and national competitions; a gift shop; a School of Art providing a wide range of
classes for all levels of experience from ages 2 to 92; public programs; and
outreach programs in the Norwalk and Stamford schools. SGAC is the preeminent visual arts center in Fairfield County with nearly 4,000 annual enrollments at the School of Art and 11,000 visitors to the award-winning galleries.
The center provides its artist members, faculty, students and visitors with a
common location where they can share ideas, work on projects, teach, explore new areas and grow in their creativity and talents. The Silvermine Guild
Arts Center is supported by membership fees, school tuition, art sales, donations, grants and sponsorship for its many programs.
We firmly believe that “art is vital” and the Board of Trustees is working hard
to further the mission of Silvermine Guild Arts Center, honoring its past and
ensuring a vibrant future. In April, following an extensive search process,
Leslee Asch assumed the role of Executive Director. We are grateful to Pam
Davis for her fine work as Executive Director for the past three years, and
thank her for facilitating such a smooth transition of executive leadership.
Board transitions this year include the departure during the year of Board
member Dan Welch, due to professional time pressures. With the exception
of Roger Williams who will be stepping down from the Board in October, having completed six years on the Board, the current board is expected to continue for the coming year.
The fiscal year 2010 annual report, which covers the period from July 1, 2009
– June 30, 2010, summarizes the many programs offered by the arts center
and highlights of the past fiscal year. We are grateful to the staff, members,
volunteers and funders who make what we do possible.

The Guild of Artists
Artists have been drawn to
Silvermine since sculptor
Solon Borglum moved here in
1908 and established it as a
place for artists to gather.
The Silvermine Guild of
Artists was founded in 1922
and formally incorporated in
1924 when the School of Art
was established. Guild membership currently stands at
307 members.
This year, we were pleased
to honor eight new lifetime
members at the Guild Holiday
Party. Lifetime members are
those artists who have been
members of the Guild for
more than 35 years. This
year we honored: Janet
Baldi, Alberta Cifolelli, Carol
Cole-Manasevit, Carole Eisner, Kathleen Faggan, Mimi
Korach Lesser, Jean Mann,
and Amy West.
Through the Gallery Committee, the Guild, led by CoChairs Roger Mudre and
Leslie Giuliani, determines
the annual calendar of exhibtions.
Galleries and
Public Programs
The Silvermine Galleries
mounted 11, two and one
person exhibitions, and two
group exhibitions of Guild
Artist members. Visitors were
treated to a wide range of
media and styles as well as
year round artist talks led by
exhibiting artists and Gallery
Director, Jeffrey Mueller. The
opportunity to learn about
contemporary art in a relaxed
atmosphere and through informal discussions is unparalleled at Silvermine.
In addition to solo and
group exhibitions, Silvermine
Guild Arts Center hosted a
national juried print competition/exhibition, Print
Americas, along with the annual juried competition/exhibition, Art of the Northeast.
Continuing the galleries’
long standing reputation of
securing renowned jurors, Silvermine was honored to have
famed artist Mary Frank, Jack
Shainman Gallery Director
Katie Rashid, and the DIrector
of Pace Print Chelsea, Jacob
Lewis, all serving as jurors in
2009-2010.
2010 also marked the 61st
year of Art of the Northeast.
Established in 1949 by
Revington Arthur and Miriam
Broudy as the New England
Exhibition, this juried competition is open to artists from the
six New England states and
3
now includes New York, New
Jersey and Pennsylvania.
This annual exhibition/competition is widely anticipated as
new and emerging artists
seek recognition by gaining
entry into this exhibition. The
juror this year was Katie
Rashid, Gallery Director of
the Jack Shainman Gallery.
Cecilia Fradet chaired this
special anniversary exhibition
with committee members
Scott Bricher, Katherine
Draper, Kari Englehardt, Lori
Glavin, Susan Newbold and
Jodi Strmiska. The galleries
contracted Paul Lin to produce a YouTube video of the
juror, Katie Rashid, during the
jurying process.
In early January, the galleries added to the excitement of the always
anticipated New Members
show by juxtaposing the exhibition with a selection of
works by long standing Guild
member, David Dunlop, which
was accompanied by a dynamic collaborative exhibition
of work by Guild members
Jodi Silver and Arle SklarWeinstein.
More than 11,000 visitors
came to the galleries to view
museum caliber exhibitions.

Sales of art continue to improve with an increase in outside sales generated by
gallery staff. While price sensitivity remains high, patrons
are slowly returning to the
market.
Silvermine has two
fundraising events each year
to help support the many pro-
grams offered at the arts center. In addition, a holiday art
sale and tag sale help to
raise funds for scholarships
at the School of Art.
Signed, Sealed & Delivered
was a sold-out success and
grossed over $17,000. More
than 300 original 4” x 6”
works of art were sold. The
committee chairs for the
eighth year were Tom Bernsten, Nash Hyon, Roger
Mudre and Nancy Nikkal.
Our annual benefit, Silver
Lining, was chaired by Patricia Levinson. We thank Pat
for her tireless efforts and
amazing good cheer.
The Silvermine School of Art
As our busy parking lot will attest, the school is thriving
under the inspired leadership
of School Director, Anne Connell. The first class, offered in
1924, was a painting class
taught by Robert Schmidt in
the barn, now Hays Gallery.
Using Guild Artist members
as faculty, other courses were
added including sculpture and
ceramics. Today, the School
offers over 250 courses and
workshops in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, digital imaging,
printmaking and photography.
The studios are fully utilized,
as are the grounds for plein
air painting and drawing.
In this past year, we welcomed eight new Faculty
Members: Andrew Coombs
(Ceramics); Viola Galetta
(Jewelry Crocheting Jewelry/Seed bead stringing);
Erin Jenkins (Printmaking);
Carla Lindsey (Youth
classes); Christopher Magadini (Visiting Artist -Landscape
Painting); Jill Nichols (Fused
Glass); Jamison Odone (Illustration);and Karen Siegel
(Youth classes).
Each year Silvermine students are invited to submit
4
their art for the Student Exhibition. This is a juried show
for students of all levels working in any media. This exhibition provides students the
opportunity to share their accomplishments with one another and offers the general
public a view of the fine art
and creative energy that is
generated by the student
body at the Silvermine School
of Art. Open to all students,
the juried exhibition celebrates the talent, artistic
achievement and diversity of
our students and faculty.
Due to a change in the exhibition schedule, we hosted
two student exhibitions this
fiscal year. Susan Frey, Cindi
Mullins and Michele Marshall
co-chaired both the 19th and
20th Annual Student Exhibitions. The 19th opened July
26, 2009 and ran until August
23rd. The show was juried by
Jon Walker, Chair, Associate
Professor, Department of Art
& Design Sacred Heart University. The 20th was juried
by Michael Torlen, Associate
Professor of Visual Art, Purchase College and had a
packed opening reception on
June 27th.
In addition, the Student
silvermine guild arts center
Gallery exhibitions change
every two weeks affording
students an opportunity to exhibit their work. Seeing art
and learning about art is ongoing at the center.
Each year, the School of
Art also showcases current
works by our distinguished
artist/teachers. The exhibition
represents every style and
media including painting,
drawing, printmaking, photography, mixed-media, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry and
silversmithing. 61 Faculty
members participated in the
show which ran from August
20th – September 13th, 2009.
In October, 2009, the ever
popular travel workshops with
David Dunlop explored the
Museums and galleries of
Santa Fe and the magic
landscape of Georgia
O’Keefe in Abiquiu, New
Mexico. David also gave lectures in February on Art &
Science; Cross Breeding
Ideas and Techniques and in
March, entitled “Painting the
Fourth Dimension: Can a picture slow down and taste
salty?”
The Holiday Show was held
over the first weekend in December. The sale of ceramics, paintings and wearable
art raised over $4,000 towards scholarships. While enrollment has been strong, we
also saw a large increase in
the number of requests for
scholarships. A record number of scholarships were offered this year. 38
scholarships were awarded to
talented youth and adult students who would otherwise
have been unable to continue
their artistic pursuits. The
April 24th tag sale also contributed towards this effort.
In December, there was an
exhibition of Claire Watson
Garcia’s work as well as student work that appears in
Claire’s new book, Painting
for the Absolute and Utter Beginner. The exhibit ran from
Sunday, December 13 – January 9, with the book signing
on Sunday, December 13. In
February, we hosted a special
5
film presentation by internationally respected Art historian, writer and lecturer
Sunanda Sanyal “A Homecoming Spectacle.”
In March, we participated
again in Draw On! in partnership with the Aldrich Museum.
Silvermine hosted a day of
non-stop drawing open to the
public as an opportunity for
continuous, intensive figure
drawing with a model in sustained poses, and still life setups. Participants of all skill
levels, ages 16 and
up,worked alongside Silvermine Faculty, Guild Artist
members and stu
dents to develop their artistic
vision, sharpen skills and energize their studio drawing
experience.
In May, Peter Rubino presented “Symphony in Clay”
and signed copies of his
books “The Portrait in Clay”
and “Sculpting the Figure in
Clay.” Combining art and
music “Symphony in Clay” is
a high-energy performance in
which author, teacher and
Master Sculptor, Peter Rubino transforms in 20 minutes
a monumental 250 lbs. of clay
into a bigger than life size
portrait of Beethoven working

music.
We are happy to report
that enrollment was up significantly this year.

Art Partners
Art Partners celebrated its
17th year bringing curriculum
based, art infused workshops
and after school programs to
five elementary, two middle
and one high school in Norwalk and Stamford. The program is designed to
encourage critical thinking
and help close the achievement gap that exists in Connecticut public schools. This
year, Art Partners also resumed programming with the
Norwalk Housing Authority,
providing students the opportunity to work in Silvermine’s
professional studios and have
ings this coming year.
One highlight of the year
was a collaborative language
and visual arts program at
Brookside Elementary
School. Silvermine’s author
Page McBrier worked with the
students to create their own
poems, using as a basis the
poem, Where I’m From, by
George Ella Lyon. Going
through the poem line by line,
each student was asked to
create a list of present and
past memories. Once the list
was complete, they then created their own poems using
their lists with the phrase “I
am from” to link their ideas
and tie their present with their
past. Students then chose
two favorite lines to read from
their own poems and with
their group created and recited a final line for their
poem beginning with “we are
from.” This exercise was followed by Silvermine School
of Art faculty member, Marta
Kot, who had the students
draw self portraits, integrating
their poems with their art.
Through this type of lesson,
students learned about each
other and became stronger
as a group, taking pride in the
results.
The Youth Open Art Studio
program was launched in
September 2009, providing
an opportunity for artistically
inclined teens to explore a
range of different media and
techniques for all levels of experience.
