K-2 Performance
Last Thursday, 27th August, Southern Cross School K-12
Year 5-6 Rugby League boys took on The Junction Public
School - AND WON! The team was quite nervous before the
game but shook it off during the warm up, showing great
courage leading up to the kick off.
Last Thursday evening the gym lit up with smiles
and pride as K-2 students danced and sang
throughout their “It’s Showtime” performance. After
many long hours of preparation and rehearsals
families and friends were treated to a vista of
performances from popular movies. A big thank you
to all the staff and students for their tremendous
effort. Also a big thank you to Northern Rivers
Mobility and Scooter Solutions for the use of
the stage ramp for the show and whole week of
rehearsals.
Southern Cross School K-12 started well with an outstanding
display of athleticism by Rowan Mansfield, scoring a half-field
try under the posts. The Junction soon replied, battering
our try line to eventually score on their fourth repeat set.
After the half-time break, the two teams were relentless,
unable to break each other’s line until Rowan caught a wide
pass from halfback Harley Wilkinson, enabling him to break
a tackle and run the field again. The crowd went wild! Just
when we thought we had the game sewn up, The Junction
hit back hard and wide, scoring and converting from the
sideline. Locked at 12-all at full-time, the game was forced
into extra-time (5 minutes each way) with the two teams
deadlocked with remarkable defence.
When the hooter rang for the last time, Southern Cross
School K-12 were declared the winners, having scored the
first try. The relief and joy was obvious as parents and
supporters stormed the field in celebration of a close and
hard-fought victory. Well done boys!

Congratulations to all of our students for their fantastic
achievements. Our Rugby League boys played an
exciting game on Thursday to win their way to the
Grandfinal to be played at Orana Park at Campbelltown
on Wednesday 9th of September. We wish all of the
boys the best of luck and congratulations.
I spoke at last year’s assembly projecting the goal of
becoming the first choice in education for our region, in
mind to create great community spirit, achieve excellent
results and outcomes and to create a safe happy learning
environment for all. We have been working diligently
on all of these goals with PBL (Positive Behaviour
Learning) and community events such as the sporting
fixtures, Summer Fair, performances and the regular
offerings of OHSC, Basketball, and the Homework Centre
demonstrate that we have an ever-increasing sense of
community. Our NAPLAN results this year have also been
outstanding with our Year 3 students achieving above
state average in every aspect and our Year 5 students
fairing well with all subjects above the Department of
Education average. The most impressive result in this
year’s NAPLAN is the personal growth that each child has
achieved. This growth is a result of the many and varied
improvements, such as L3, Envision Maths, Mathletics,
collaboratively devised units of work, and Spelling
Mastery.
You can have your say on our school and the service that
we provide by completing the Tell Them From Me Survey.
A note will come home shortly with a parent login and
password so you can complete the survey that will
provide us with invaluable feedback and input.

Year 9 Peer Leadership Training
7-12 Support Boccia
Selected Year 9 students recently participated in the first
training session to become an effective Peer Leader. Twenty
students attended Dunes on Shelley where they learnt valuable
skills in communication, organisation, activity development
and team building exercises. These skills were tested at the
first Transition day where Peer Leaders coordinated a variety
of activities with current Year 6 students. It was wonderful
to witness new relationships being built and trust developing
between students ensuring the transition from Year 6 to
High School will be an exciting time and a smooth process
for students. Peer Leaders are looking forward to the second
transition day held at Southern Cross School K-12 in December.
Our team left yesterday and we wish them the
best of luck as they compete at Olympic Park in
Sydney for the State Knockout.
Thank you to all who supported our raffle which
was drawn on Friday 28 August.
The winners are announced later in this
newsletter. Thanks again to all the sponsors
for donating such wonderful prizes and
congratulations to the prize winners.
Transition Day
On August 24th, twenty Peer Leaders and approximately 150
students from local public schools attended Dunes on Shelly
for their first transition day. This transition day provided the
children and peer leaders with a whole day of fun, meeting
knew people, learning, and teaching each other.
Year 9 Japanese class went on an
excursion on Tuesday 24th to Kuni’s sushi
restaurant in Ballina. The students were very
adventurous, trying octopus, squid, salmon
and a traditional Japanese desert mochi. The
consensus was oishii!!!
We all walked to the beach and had a sand building competition
where there was an array of different things from octopuses
to a mermaid and even atlantis. To top off the day we finished
with a short bush walk before going home.
This transition day was a complete success, thanks to the
teaching staff that helped out, Mr Smith, Mr Tarrant, Ms
Edwards and Ms Keenan. I look forward to doing more activities
like this as a Peer Leader and encourage more students to join
in and have fun.

HSC Preparations
Sue Huxley, our school counsellor, would like to
offer her time to any Year 12 students to support
them leading up to the HSC. Different techniques
such as stress management, mindfulness, goal
setting etc, can be very beneficial in times of
pressure.
To book a time with Sue, please contact the
school office on 6686 0503.
Work Experience 2015
Big Day Out
Our Year 10 students headed out in droves in Week 6 this term to complete
work experience placements across the region, throughout the state and
interstate. Students got up close and personal with a job that interested
them. For those new to ‘working life’ this experience came with some
challenges. A big thumbs up to those of you who really made the effort to
work with their employees and complete the week.
On Wednesday 19th August
twenty five Year 12 students
travelled to Queensland to visit
respective Universities. The tour
started with a visit to the Red
Zone at Griffith University. The
students were excited to run
into Erin Baker, former student
of Southern Cross School
K-12. Erin is in her first year at
Griffith completing a Bachelor of
International Business. From there
they travelled to University of
Queensland where they received a
free lunch provided by Emmanuel
College, one of the many student
accommodation options available
prior to a tour of dorms and the
University campus. The student’s
feedback was fantastic. They had
an incredible day and the visit
really assisted to solidify their
views on their future career path.
Thank you to Mrs Schlenker for
supporting them.
The Careers Team
Miss Ryan and Miss Middleton
A big thank you to all the local businesses who supported our students in
this program. We had placements with everyone from Australian Seabird
Rescue to Ballina Cruise and Travel, Macadamia Castle, Ventura Publishing
House in Sydney, Lismore Motorcycles, Ballina Hospital, the Northern Rivers
Conservatorium and many, many more. As pictured, one student even had the
opportunity to complete his work at the Australian Astronomical Observatory
in Coonabarabran! Thank you very much to all of those businesses and we
look forward to working with you again next year.
The ‘Work Experience Award for Outstanding Achievement’ went to Kiagh
Mannion this year, who showed
initiative, worked hard and gave
her employees at Best and Less,
Ballina Fair no choice but to keep
her on board - offering her some
casual work at the end of the
placement. Well done Kiagh!
Year 10, I am sure that this work
experience will have taught you
many things. It is experience like
this, voluntary work in industries
that interest you, that provide
invaluable lessons, new skills,
contacts and respect for those
who have done it all before you.
Education is the key to getting
a job that you love, or more
importantly being able to avoid
the ones that you don’t. Keep
working hard.
One Million Stars
Our Year 7 welfare classes have participated in One Million Stars, a worldwide campaign aimed at increasing
awareness about domestic violence. Many issues were discussed during the classes in which the stars were made.
In two weeks 150 woven ribbon stars were made. The stars will be helping in the display planned for Brisbane in
2018. For more information go to www.onemillionstars.net

Exciting Opportunity: Tour to Cambodia, December 2016.
Southern Cross School K-12, in conjunction with Ballina High School, is excited to offer
a trip of a lifetime to Cambodia with Antipodeans Abroad in December, 2016.
This community service focused adventure gives your child a life-changing
experience in the world beyond the classroom. It is the opportunity of a lifetime
for students, and one we at Southern Cross School K-12 strongly recommend you
consider for your child.
Antipodeans Abroad has over 20 years’ experience in overseas student travel
and manages expeditions and tours to 30 developing countries worldwide.
Students will take part in a sustainable, hands-on community project and
travel as a team to see some of the sights of this amazing country.
Sights could include a visit to the Angkor Temples, one of the great sights of the
ancient world; Siem Reap and Battambang; Phnom Penh including the S21
Museum and the Killing Fields, two places synonymous with Cambodia's darker
days; museums, temples, markets and cooking classes.
Students are challenged to make decisions, show initiative and take
responsibility for their journey as they gain a true appreciation of their host
country. Your child will experience the exhilaration of personal development
and achievement, learn more about themselves, become a 'global citizen',
and of course have the time of their lives!
We would like to invite you and your child to a presentation to discuss the
program, its benefits, safety and back-up, fundraising support and answer any
questions you have about this unique and rewarding educational opportunity.
We look forward to seeing you next Thursday (3rd September) in the
school library at 6pm.
If you can’t make this presentation please contact Emily Simmonds in the Science
Department.
