Kearny Police Report
According to state law, there are two methods
by which police may arrest suspected offenders.
The suspect may be physically taken into the
department and booked into jail, or the arresting
officer may write a citation and release the
suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are
presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court
of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All
damages are estimates.

Criminal damage was reported on the 400 block of
Hartford.
Oct. 26
A credit card was found and turned into the police
department. It was later claimed.
During the period of Oct. 20 to Oct. 26 there were five
ambulance runs and one alarm drop.

OBITUARIES
Dennis Enzy Boatman
Dennis Ezzy Boatman, 80 years of age, of
Queen Valley, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19 in
Apache Junction. Mr. Boatman was born in
Through, N.M. and was employed at ASARCo
Ray Pit for 30 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife
Patricia Boatman and parents, Dennis E.
Sr. and Vargie Boatman. He is survived by
his daughter Patricia Lynne (jack) Hafer;
sons: Dennis J (Cheryl) Boatman, Robert W. Boatman, and
Kenneth F. (Robin) Boatman; 14 grandchildren; and, 19 greatgrandchildren.
The family is holding a private visitation.
Aurora Lopez
Aurora Lopez, 90, of Mammoth, Ariz.
passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014 at
her home in Mammoth, Ariz.
Aurora was born on Dec. 23, 1923 in
Winkelman, Ariz. the daughter of Pablo and
Ramona Varela. She is survived by children:
Ralph (Dorothy) Lopez, Rita Morales and
Mary (David) Helen; many grandchildren;

Free arsenic and lead testing for children, pregnant
women offered in Winkelman, Hayden
The US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) has determined that there are high levels
of arsenic and lead in the air, in tailings and
other waste piles, and in the soil of some nonresidential areas in Hayden and Winkelman.
ASARCO and the EPA have cleaned up lead and
arsenic in residential and public areas of both
towns.
The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease
Registry (ATSDR), the Arizona Department of
Health Services (ADHS) and EPA believe that
people living and working in Hayden and Winkelman may come into contact with arsenic and
lead in the air and soil. EPA has asked ATSDR
to offer urine and blood testing for community
members to measure and study arsenic and
lead levels.
The ADHS and ATSDR will be collecting blood
and urine to test for evidence for exposure to
lead and arsenic. They will be testing those
samples from people determined to be at higher
risk for health effects, pregnant women and

young children, who are being exposed to arsenic and lead. Testing will begin in six to eight
months but those interested should sign up
now as there will only be 200 people tested.
Those that will be tested must be living in
Hayden or Winkelman. Children aged nine
months to five years will be tested for blood
lead. Children aged six years to 11 years the test
will be for blood lead and urine arsenic. Pregnant women will be tested for blood lead and
urine arsenic. If slots are available, testing will

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Why does Ray Unified School District need an override?
Registered voters received an information
pamphlet in the mail from the School that
educates us as to why the school needs an
override. How many of you have actually read
the pamphlet? If you’re like the majority of
the people I’ve talked to, you looked at the
pamphlet and your thought was, “the school
wants more money from my pockets which I
can’t afford it” and left it at that. Then when
you vote you see that it says salaries and you
assumed that the teachers want more money.
So I started asking questions as to what this
override money would be used for – basically
why does the school need more money when
we are already bleeding from taxes? How can
I be sure they will use the money for what they
say they are? What I found surprised me. If we
do not pass the override, then we may LOSE
ALL of our EXTRACIRRICULAR PROGRAMS!!
These programs include, FOOTBALL, CHEER,
BASKETBBALL, BASEBALL, SOFTBALL,
and JROTC. In addition to the extracurricular
programs we may lose MUSIC, ART, Physical
Education and elective classes.
Here are some facts to consider when
deciding how to vote for the override.
Will my taxes increase? No YOUR
TAXES WILL NOT INCREASE. The tax
override has been in effect since 1982.
Therefore, this override will NOT increase your
taxes.
How do I know that the money will be
spent on the students? The override funds
must be implemented according to the districts
override plan. Any time you have questions
about how the money is spent, you have the
right to go to the district office to see how the
money is used. I went to the district office and
spoke to Joanne Warren about the override.
Joanne was more than happy to educate me on
how the schools money is used.
I don’t have children in school so I
see no need to support the school. The
students in our schools are the leaders of
tomorrow. These children, will in time, be
making decisions that will affect all of us.
Statistics have shown that children who do
not participate in extracurricular activities will
find something else to do. Often they get mixed
up in gangs, drugs, and alcohol abuse, and we
know those choices can destroy their future.
We already have a 4-day school week, so with
considerably more time on their hands, kids
will find something to do. As my dad use to say
“Idle hands are the devils playground.”
I am currently the president of the JROTC
Booster Club and my son is the CO for JROTC.
I am also a graduate of Ray High School. As
a student I participated in sports, was an
officer in the Girls Athletic Association, and a
cheerleader. I know from my own experience
and from my son’s experience just how valuable
these programs are. Research has shown that
extracurricular activities can help students
in many ways. It brings kids together that
have the same interests, students achieve
better grades, learn social and team building
skills, time management, patriotism, honesty,
and responsibility. Google “Advantages of
extracurricular activities” and you will find
pages of articles that will show extracurricular
activities are important in developing wellrounded citizens. Participation in sports, music,
or JROTC will set them apart from others who
didn’t participate in extracurricular activities.
It can also lead to jobs, scholarships, and
college. Extra curricular activities are a winwin situation for everyone.
Over 10 years ago 3 different schools
employed me. I worked for Cottonwood/
Oak Creek School District for 5 years, Ray
Unified School District for 1 year, and Hayden
Winkelman School District for 1 year. The
positions I had during my employment were
Technical Support for 2 of the Districts in
addition to teaching computer classes/labs for
grades K-8. I know from my own experience
of maintaining a classroom, that teachers put
a lot of their money into classroom supplies.
The budgets were extremely tight 10 year’s
ago when I was employed. Since that point in
time, we have gone through a recession. The
schools cannot stretch the money any further.
If we don’t pass the override, then we are at risk
of having to do what the rest of the country is
doing and that is go to “pay-to-play” for extra
curricular sports. Google “pay to play” and you
will find pages of articles stating that many
schools across the country are implementing
pay-to-play at their schools. In an article titled
“Will ‘’Pay to Play’ Become A Permanent Part
of Sports?” it was stated that at Lakota Local
School District in Ohio the pay-to-play fee is
$550.00 per child. At Riverside Local District
in Painesville Ohio the fees for cross-country
are $521, golf is $715, Football is $783 and
tennis was $933.
JROTC was established in 73/74 school
years. We are one of the oldest JROTCs’ in the
state. The JROTC does many public services for
this community, which includes 21-gun salute
and presentation of the flag to the family at
funerals for veterans, color guard for the school
and other groups such as CAC and ASARCO,
Toys for Tots – supplies toys for kids in
Kearny and surrounding areas. This is a group
that is known all around the state for their
performances and dedication in providing color
guards and marching in parades. The students
are sent to many leadership camps throughout
their four years. Let me ask you how many
schools can say that their students have had
the opportunity to have a day of training with
the Navy Seals? Last year during the annual
trip to Camp Pendleton, our students had a day
of training with the Navy Seals. The students
in ROTC gain respect for our country and the
program produces patriotic citizens. Many of
our students have joined the forces and are

successful in their life due to this program. To
lose a program that has been here for 40 years
and is apart of this schools history – a program
that few schools are chosen for would be
unconscionable.
We owe it to our students to give them every
opportunity to develop into successful citizens.

Town of Kearny plans Community Clean-Up Day
Kearny - Saturday, Jan. 17 is the day
to meet at the Senior Citizens Center
to participate in the Town of Kearny
Community Clean-Up Day, sponsored by
the Town of Kearny in collaboration with
the Kearny Senior Citizens.
Come out from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m., to show
your pride in the beautiful town of Kearny.
Teach your children about community
improvement, spend time with friends,
and, if you have the need, work toward
fulfilling your community service hours.
Superior Chamber will host
Night of the Cowboy Nov. 8
Superior Chamber of Commerce will
host La Noche de Vaquero, Night of the
Cowboy on Saturday Nov. 8, 2014. They
will celebrate and honor local cowboys
with a dinner and dance!
The event will be held at the Magma
Club at 38 Kumpke Court in Superior
from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Yup! Things Don’t Work!
M
y wife, Carol, has a new saying,
“Things don’t work!” She says this
in exasperation when her computer
freezes up, when the guide wheels fall off
the dishwasher racks, or when the television
gets a mind of its own.
This week it was my turn to say, “Things
don’t work!’ The town’s filtration plant has
been down, and it has taken quite a while
to get new parts. This filter removes the
sediments from the water, especially the
manganese which is so prevalent here. The
repair team has been working on the filter
this week and all should have been going
well. They were, until the State Fire Marshal
called for an inspection of the town’s fire
hydrants.
Well, Chief Piggott complied and, as you
know, quite a bit of manganese got stirred
up, discoloring the water and leaving
sediments in sinks and tubs. Then, on top
of that, our new well (yes, the new one!)
decided to quit working and we had to call in
for more help.
All our fixes and repairs are complicated
because the whole water system is now more
than fifty years old. Pipes have settled, pipes
have become encrusted, and little pockets
of manganese are everywhere waiting to be

Hayden Plant Site meeting held

Public meetings were
held on Oct. 21 and 22
in Hayden to update the
public on the investigation
by the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) of
the ASARCO Hayden Plant
Site. The investigation of
the industrial areas of the
site has been on going for
a year. The EPA has been
monitoring and sampling
air, soil and water in
the area to determine
the nature and extent
of contamination of the
environment.
About 35 people attended
the meeting including
members of ASARCO,
EPA, Arizona Department
of Health Services (ADHS),
Arizona Department of
Environmental Quality
(ADEQ), Agency for Toxic
Substances and Disease
Registry (ATSDR) as well
as Hayden/Winkelman
residents. Pete Rios,
Pinal County Supervisor
for district one and Ken
Montoya representing
Congresswoman Ann
Kirkpatrick’s office also
attended.

provided the presentation
on the investigation
updates. There was a
discussion session during
and after the presentation.
Printed information on
the updates and proposed
testing for blood lead
and urine arsenic in
Hayden and Winkelman
was made available. Ben
Gerhardstein, ATSDR gave
the presentation on the
planned lead and arsenic
testing. Due to findings of
arsenic and lead in levels
above the EPA standards,
free testing of blood and
urine for arsenic and lead
is being offered to children
and pregnant women. (see
article on free testing)
Air monitoring systems
have been placed in and
around residential areas
near the plant site. They
have measured the air
quality for the past year
and it has shown that
arsenic, lead and cadmium
are present in amounts
above the EPA’s safety
levels. The Hillcrest
neighborhood and the area
around Terrace Hill Drive
had the highest levels
of concentration of the
metals. The air monitoring
will continue for another
year.
Soil sampling was
conducted in nonresidential areas of the
industrial plant around the
smelter and concentrator
and outlying natural
areas. High concentrates
of the metal have been
confirmed in the Hayden
plant and former
Kennecott concentrator.
Concentrations of the
metals have been found in
outlying non-residential
areas including arroyos in
the area. Hillenbrand said
parents should keep their
children from playing in
those areas.
The drinking water
supply wells of Hayden/
Winkelman have been
monitored and sampled
and found to meet EPA
drinking water quality
standards. Storm water,
ground water and
river water has been
sampled. Stormwater
samples collected from
the Kennecott wash
area showed arsenic,
copper and lead greater
than EPA standards in
the runoff. Pockets of
groundwater have showed
levels of metals above the
drinking water standards.
More testing of river
water sampling will be
conducted.
Most of the soil and
water data has been
collected and the air
sampling will continue
for another year. Once all
the data is analyzed and
information is collected,
options for clean up will be
determined and presented
to the public at a meeting
for comment. This should
occur in early 2016. After
plans are completed for
the clean up the clean
up of the site will begin.

Kearny Council approves
reconnection fee increase, offers
employment to new Chief of Police

Mayor Hosler and the Kearny Town Council presented
a cash award and certificate to two talented students
at Ray Unified School District. Ada Wilhelmi was
awarded $100 for her poster on how everyone can
help keep Kearny beautiful and John Ink won $100
for his slogan. The poster and slogan will be used in
marketing materials to encourage residents to participate in community clean ups and other beautification
projects.
Mayor Hosler presented Councilmember Neil Gambell
with a sculpture as a recognition and appreciation
for his service to the Kearny Town Council. Gambell
has served the town for eight years and did not
seek re-election. His term will end in December.
Hosler remarked that Councilmember Gambell was
always the go to person on understanding many of
the complex issues the town faced in Public Works
and also through his involvement in other advisory
committees. Gambell will be presented with an 8 year
service award from the League of Arizona Cities and
Towns in August of 2015.
The Kearny Town
Council approved a
service disconnection and
reconnection fee increase
and amendment to the
Kearny Town Code at
last week’s meeting. The
increase will help improve
the efficiency of utility
operations. Currently the
fee for reconnection is $10
for both the disconnect fee
and the reconnect fee. The
Council studied this item at
the September meeting and
it shall take effect within 30
days. The new fee is $35.
After months of searching,
the council voted to offer
an employment contract
to Alfred Alameda as
the new police chief for
Kearny. The employment
offer is contingent upon
him passing necessary
background checks and
health physicals.
During the regularly
scheduled meeting the
council also approved
a road closure request
for the Copper Basin
Chamber, approved a work
contract with the Arizona
Department of Corrections
for inmate labor, and voted
to approve repairs to the
old well number 2 and the
lake well pump repair.

Elder Yocum’s four TDs leads Bearcats to playoff win

Senior quarterback Destry Yocum threw
for three touchdowns and ran for another
in the sixth-ranked Bearcats first-round
playoff victory over the Salome last
Saturday night. The ‘Cats defeated the
11th-ranked Frogs, 41 – 6.
Yocum, who passed for 167 yards and
ran for 85 more, threw one of his three
touchdown passes to his brother Cole
Yocum, a freshman. Robbin Newman and
Jeron Coleman also caught scoring passes
from the elder Yocum.
Newman, who also scored a rushing
touchdown against the Frogs, ran for 124
yards on 14 carries. Senior Triston Gantt
added a 59-yard touchdown run.
Six defenders finished with double-digit
tackles including Jose Torres (14), Seth
Harmon (10), Destry Yocum (19), Jeron
Coleman (10), Jacob Pace (12), and Steven
Lucero (11).
The ‘Cats forced three turnovers against
the Frogs. Robbin Newman and Wyatt
Miller each had an interception in addition
to Cole Yocum’s fumble recovery.
Destry Yocum (Overall), Robbin Newman
(Offensive), and Seth Harmon (Defensive)
were named Players of the Game for their
efforts.
The victory over the Frogs sets up
a rematch for the ‘Cats in the second
round against third-ranked Pima. The
Roughriders defeated the ‘Cats in the
season-opener, 50 – 25. Just like the
opener, Saturday’s playoff game is at Pima.
Pima finished their regular season with
a record of 7 – 1, their only loss coming
against top-ranked Bagdad. Saturday’s
game will be the Roughriders first playoff
game after having a bye last week.
Saturday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The eighth-ranked Lady Cats’ volleyball
team closed out its regular season
Tuesday night at Superior. Regardless
of the results against the Panthers,
the Lady Cats will be one of 16 teams
in the Division V State Championship
Tournament.
The tournament will take place Nov.
7-8 at the Prescott Valley Event Center.

that he would be entering
the Florence Hall of Fame
for his accomplishments
as a Florence High
Gopher football player.
His nomination was for
outstanding performance in
high school athletics.

preparations of championship
contenders (Florence,
Superior, Clifton and Eloy)
states, “ … key to the Florence
attack will be All Conference
quarterback, Bobby Padilla,
a good passer and faker. He
will operate behind a trio of
veterans in tackles.”

you came to, the coach had
you count fingers and back
in the game you went. The
first day of practice as a
Freshman, Coach Cisterna
threw a shirt to him with
the #52 and that was his for
four years. At some point in
the late 1950’s, numbers for
football players were changed
to single digit for the backs
and quarterbacks.
When playing baseball, his
toughest opponent was when,
as a batter, he had to face
his brother Chaco (Henry),
pitcher for Hayden, who was
one of the toughest in the
conference.
Bob was born in Winkelman.
His father died in a mining
accident in Tiger when he
was one year old. He was
in the fifth grade when he
moved to Florence with his
mother and brother Art.
After high school, he worked
for Foxworth-Galbreath
Lumber Yards in Nogales
and Winkelman, and joined
ASARCO in the warehouse,
until his retirement. He
served as president of the
Lobo Athletic Booster Club,
and, in 1970 - 1973, as a
volunteer quarterback coach
at Hayden High.
He married his high
school sweetheart, Mary
Ward, to whom he has
been married for 57 years.
They have four children:
Diane (David), Sandy, Bob
(Patti) and Edwina; eight
grandchildren, and three
great-grandchildren.

off Florence High School
Homecoming. HIs picture

Chicken Drop for 4-H
This confused participant in the Chicken Drop wasn’t quite sure what he should
be doing. It took awhile for the reluctant rooster to catch on, but he finally did his
thing to name a winner. Several other winners, courtesy of hens, were also named
throughout the afternoon. All this fun was during the Harvest Festival last Saturday.
Proceeds from the drop project benefited the Kearny Koyotes 4-H Club.

held the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m.
MAMMOTH SENIOR CITIZENS: Mammoth Senior
Citizens will meet Tuesday evenings at 5 p.m. for a light
dinner, games and activities. They also meet Thursdays
at noon for lunch and will deliver a Mexican meal to
businesses and individuals for a $5 donation. Meetings
are held at the Charles Clark Community Center in

Taking the fear out of Halloween for young kids
Halloween can be a fun time of year, but for infants,
toddlers and preschoolers, who often can’t distinguish
between fantasy and reality, scary experiences can ruin
the holiday and create long-term fears. Below are tips
for minimizing anxiety and helping young kids enjoy
Halloween.
Teach kids the difference between real and imaginary.
One way to do this is to connect to something kids already
do, like playing dress-up or pretend. Talk with your child
leading up to Halloween about how people will be dressed
up and how some costumes, while scary, aren’t real.
Choose costumes and decorations carefully. Something
may be cute or funny to us, but uncomfortable, scary or
downright dangerous to young kids. Consider how long
your child will wear a costume. Avoid masks, which can be
scary and restrict vision; try face-painting instead. If your
child is old enough, let her help choose a costume.
Practice for trick-or-treating. This is more than just
what to say to get candy. Talk about holding hands when
crossing the street and going only to well-lit homes.
Remind kids that some people will be strangers, but that
you will be with them the entire time.
On the big night. Go trick-or-treating early in the
evening. Stay with your children always. If your child is
fearful, don’t tell them to not be afraid. This invalidates
their concerns and may prevent them from expressing
anxieties later on. Remind them that you are there to
protect them.
Choose treats wisely. Hard candies, gummy snacks and
caramels get stuck in tiny teeth and can cause tooth decay.
The best selection of treats is plain chocolate, which melts
easily. In addition, look out for very small treats or toys
with small parts, which can be choking hazards.
Make holiday learning fun. Engage your child in family
traditions, like baking seasonal favorites or carving
pumpkins. Read books about Halloween. Talk about your
past Halloweens and ask kids to share what they like
about the holiday.
By following these simple tips, we can make this time
of year fun for the entire family, especially those new to
Halloween.
