Make Memories in
Shipshewana and
LaGrange County
Wouldn’t it be great just to travel back
in time to when life was simpler and the
biggest decision to make was whether
you’d eat popcorn or ice cream for your
snack?
Area Information
Getting Here............................................. 8
You can experience a simpler time when
you travel the Amish backroads of LaGrange
County and Shipshewana, Indiana.
Calendar of Events.................................. 10
We are a place where 200 years ago,
German & Dutch descendants migrated to
the area so they could maintain their simple
ways, and today, they want to share those
simple ways with you.
Here, the home of the third largest Amish
community in the United States, you’ll
touch hand-sewn quilts; see Clydesdales
pulling plows; taste the freshness of fruit
pie with the berries picked as recently as
this morning.
You’ll hear an Amish father speak to his
straw-hatted son in his lilting Pennsylvania
Dutch language; you’ll smell the expanse of
wide-open spaces and natural joy.
And somewhere along the way, you’ll
realize that while you don’t have to actually
be part of this culture, you can be inspired
by their way of life.
You’ll re-discover those firmly-held values
that family is more important than funds,
that rest is as sacred as a scarlet sunset,
and the best memories are made with the
people you love the most.
There’s no need to travel back in time. Just
journey here.

LaGrange
The town of LaGrange located in the heart of
the county, it is also the county seat. Home
to some of the county’s architectural jewels
including the county courthouse, completed in
1879, and the city’s Carnegie Library, built in
1919, which recently underwent a 4 million dollar
remodel. LaGrange mixes tradition with values,
many locally-owned businesses will give you that
“Hometown” feeling. While you are here be sure
to visit a candy store, one of the many parks or
set a tee time at one of our local Golf Courses.
LaGrange plays host to several festivals and events
throughout the year. Most popular is the 4-H
County Fair (July), also look for Maple Syrup Days
and the Annual Steam & Gas Engine show on our
Calendar of Events.
Old-fashioned rural character lives in
harmony with progress and growth in
LaGrange County. In fact, “LaGrange”
is French for “The Farm”, a place where
old and new ideas tend to meet. Located
in northeastern Indiana, LaGrange
County is home to the third largest
Amish community in the United States.
Approximately 43 percent of the county’s
population is Amish. Residents and
visitors enjoy the idyllic farmland, 67
lakes and tree-shaded neighborhoods
scattered throughout the county. The
county is made up of 11 small towns and
unincorporated villages with populations
ranging from 525 to 3,000 citizens.
Topeka
howe
If you want to experience the warmth and
friendship of a small Amish community, then
a trip to Topeka is a must! Located just a few
minutes south of Shipshewana on State Road
5, you’ll see many working Amish farms and
discover a variety of Amish cottage shop. Park
your car near the hitching post and browse the
stores where the locals shop.
Howe is located just north and surrounded by
lakes and forest preserves. This unincorporated
village is also home to The Howe School, which
opened in 1884. The other unincorporated towns
of Ontario, Brighton, Mongo, Stroh, and South
Milford, offer peaceful roads, parks and vistas,
which are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Industry plays a vital role in the economic
development of this town. Topeka has managed
to successfully open its doors to industrial
development without losing its rustic charm.
Manufactured housing, the R.V. and boating
industry and an automotive plant bring in over
3,000 people to work in this small town of
1,160 residents.
The Topeka Auction Barn sees lots of activity each
year. From the Carriage Sales to the Exotic Animal
Auctions and all the horse auctions, Topeka is
a very unique place. The 4th of July Festival is
popular event for locals and travelers alike. With
a parade, kids games, carnival food, softball
tournament, live entertainment, and much more,
it’s easy to see why so many take some time to
experience Topeka and discover “Life in the
Past Lane”.
Located just 7 miles west of Shipshewana,
Middlebury, Indiana offers a nostalgic Main Street
reminiscent of years gone by. Home of the Das
Dutchman Essenhaus and a variety of craft and
gift shops, there’s always something to enjoy.
Take a bike ride on the Pumpkinvine trail that
passes from Middlebury to Shipshewana, or visit
any of the three parks in town. Schedule a stay
in August or September at any of the many Bed
and Breakfasts while taking in the Summer and
Fall Festivals where you will find good eats, local
crafts and live entertainment.
shipshewana
Shipshewana, tucked away on a buggy-filled
secondary road, is truly one of the Midwest’s
hidden surprises. Handcrafted items, handmade
furniture, Amish-inspired baked goods and
heirloom quality antiques fill the picturesque
storefronts lining the streets of this village in the
heart of Amish Country.
In addition to the wealth of choices is the
Midwest’s Largest Outdoor Flea Market, where
Tuesdays and Wednesday, May through October,
more than 1,000 vendors set up shop. There’s
always plenty of activity for everyone. Try a buggy
ride around town, enjoy a theater show, or go off
on your own to explore surrounding Backroads.
Take a multi-media journey through Amish history
at Menno-Hof, or enjoy a bite at one of the
numerous local delis, coffee shops, restaurants or
bakeries.
Families can enjoy a parade, storytellers and music
at MayFest. The Shipshewana Antique Market
presents 100+ dealers, inside and out along
with food, music and fun. The Fall Crafters Fair
is a tribute to old-fashioned culture, crafting and
music. During Country Christmas every Friday
and Saturday in November, shoppers revel in the
holiday spirit.

Take A Tour, Make A Memory
Let someone else do the planning…and the
driving…and the talking.
Whether you travel by horse and buggy or
bus, participating in an organized tour
allows you to experience our area unlike
anything else.
Local guides, typically raised here, provide
a unique perspective and share their own
stories about the culture. Most tours
include stops you wouldn’t ordinarily get
to experience, but because of the special
relationships shared between the guides
and the families, you benefit from a more
personal peek into the Amish way of life.
Tour choices are abundant, from a buggy
ride around town to step-on guides,
countryside tours, private tours, and
custom itinerary planning.
So pass the reins, sit back and relax, and
enjoy the ride.

Where Memories Await.
Making Memories in
Shipshewana & LaGrange County
My fondest memories of growing up in
Shipshewana, IN are of the incredible people,
sites, and foods I was able to experience as a
child. Through the years, my memories have
expanded to a much deeper understanding of the
uniqueness of this quaint town and the privilege
it has been for me to grow up here. Experience
this amazing community where “Memories are

Experience
Memorable Dining
To our local Amish and Mennonite
heritage, “simple” means unpretentious,
natural, and real.
Those meanings translate well into your
local dining experience, where “fresh”
is always on the menu, love is baked
into every bite, and time together is the
gratuity.
Whether you choose from-scratch soup
and salad, a pretzel made from a multigenerational family recipe, or six-course
family-style dining, our hope is that both
soul and stomach are well-fed.

Make a Super
Sunday Memory
When was the last time you grew quiet
enough to hear a bee buzz from one flower to
the next?...
… When you made up stories with your kids,
or took a Sunday drive, turning off the cell
phone and television?
When was the last time a lasting memory was
born from a simple moment?
Shipshewana and LaGrange County can help,
especially on a Sunday. In keeping with local
religious tradition, most shops and restaurants
are closed so business-owners can play and
stay with their
own families.
That means you can venture into other parts of
the area, enjoy snacks from Saturday’s grocery
visit, or carry a picnic and Frisbee to a local
park.
Hopefully, this slower pace on one day of
the week will refresh your spirit and restore
your belief that the most cherished vacation
souvenirs aren’t “things.”
