Signature Works, in which designers
test the boundaries and artists stage select-

the fabric experience “Fold” by designer
Ulf Moritz.

Among the awards he has picked up, Moritz
has been honoured as “Royal Designer
for Industry” by the London-based Royal
­Society of Arts. With “Fold” he has created
a fabric with an appearance as technoid as
it is sensual. Playing with materials, reflections, nuances, light and shadow. A fabric as
an installation.
What appeals to Ulf Moritz is discovering and developing genuine innovations.
Materials without any traditional references.
In a word – they don’t exist yet. Of course,
this carries with it distinct challenges for
the manufacturing process.
Accordingly, “Fold” is equally notable­ f ro m t h e p o i n t o f v i ew o f p ro d u c t i o n
technology­ and is in some aspects a true
innovation. Inside two layers of tulle sewn
together in a square grid pattern, it has five
by five centimetre semi-transparent plastic
mini-tiles inserted in it by hand. This process creates an iridescent, three-dimensional
effect which could be conjured up with
traditional weaving techniques.
In spite of the highly sophisticated
manufacturing process, SAHCO and Ulf
Moritz have decided to put “Fold” into
serial production, to encourage you to
experience “Fold ” in natura – and give
free rein to your imagination.

Moritz, unter anderem von der Royal Society of Ar ts London als „Royal Designer
for Industry“ geehrt, hat mit „Fold“ einen
Stoff kreiert, der ebenso technoid wie
sinnlich erscheint. Ein Spiel mit Materi­a lien,
Reflexen, Nuancen, Licht und Schatten. Ein
Stoff wie eine Installation.
Was Ulf Moritz reizt, ist das Entdecken und Entwickeln echter Novitäten.
Stoffe, die keine­ klassische Referenz haben.
Die es – kurzum – noch nicht gibt. Das birgt
naturge­m äß Herausforderungen für den
Her­­stel­lungs­p rozess.
So ist „Fold“ auch produktionstechnisch bemerkenswert und in mancher Hinsicht ein Novum. In zwei Lagen Tüll, die in
einem quadra­t ischen Raster aufeinander
genäht sind, werden­ per Hand fünf mal
fünf Zentimeter große, halbtransparente
Kunststoffplättchen eingelegt. Durch diese
Prozedur entsteht der irisierende, dreidimensionale Effekt, der mit traditionellen
Webtechniken nicht hervorzurufen wäre.
Trotz des hoch aufwändigen Her­
stellungs­p rozesses haben sich SAHCO und
Ulf Moritz entschieden, mit „Fold“ in die
Serienproduk­t ion zu gehen. In diesem Sinn:
