Extreme Earth
Extreme Earth represents an extraordinary achievement in exploration and photography. One of the world’s leading documentary photographers, Michael Martin has
devoted many years to this vast project, which surveys the four climate zones where
extremes of temperature and drought prevail: the Arctic, the deserts of the Northern
Hemisphere, the deserts of the Southern Hemisphere, and the Antarctic. He has
ridden his motorbike across the Sahara, the Namib, and the Atacama deserts;
traversed the ice of Greenland and Spitsbergen by dog sledge; flown by helicopter to
the South Pole and the pristine expanses of Antarctica; and reached the North Pole
on skis. His high standards of exploration and reporting are reflected not only in his
photography, but also in the book’s scientifically exact maps and its texts written by
experts in a wide variety of fields.
Michael Martin is a photographer, speaker, adventurer, and geographer. For
more than 30 years, he
has reported on the extreme climates of the world
in books, lectures, films,
and television shows. He
his won numerous awards
for his work, including the
Cherry Kearton Medal &
Award from the Royal
Geographical Society.

A tribute
to our blue planet
Nature photographer Markus Mauthe has travelled the globe for a quarter of a
century, capturing the beauty of widely ranging natural phenomena in spectacular
images. In the amazing photographs in this book, he portrays the world’s most
important natural habitats – deserts, rivers and lakes, grasslands, forests and mountains as well as landscapes in ice and underwater. He describes his personal experiences and these very special locations so vividly that you could almost believe you have
been there yourself.
Markus Mauthe is a professional photographer
whose love of travel and
adventure soon led him to
discover nature photography as his vocation. In his
books and in calendars, he
reveals the beauty of the
Earth while at the same
time drawing attention to
the importance of environmental conservation.
Since 2003, he has placed
his work in the service of
Greenpeace. On lecture
tours throughout the
German-speaking countries, he inspires people

Sublime landscapes
and folklore traditions
Bernd Römmelt captures the magic of the mountains, showing the Alps and their
ancient, living cultures as they have never been portrayed before. People wearing
archaic masks and wild costumes, the landscape of the Alps through the changing
seasons, by day and by night, when an unbelievable calm descends over the mountains – spectacoulus images never seen before. Some of the images were taken
during violent thunderstorms, crystal-clear mountain lakes, flower-strewn meadows,
rugged gorges and raging waterfalls. However, the book also draws attention to the
threat represented by tourism and the overexploitation of the Alps. These fascinating pictures bear witness to the beauty of the mountains and illustrate why so many
people are drawn to this magnificent natural and cultural landscape!
Bernd Römmelt was
born in Munich in 1968.
Since 2001, he has
worked as a freelance
photographer and travel
journalist. The Alps are a
focal point of his work.
A well-known author, he
has published 22 photographic volumes to date.
Some of his pictures have won awards in the
world’s most important
and prestigious nature
photography competition, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

»Wenn Ingo Arndt fotografiert,
wird die Natur zum Ereignis …«
Over a period of two years, Ingo Arndt travels around the world in pursuit of his
motifs. He takes pictures of the mounds, up to two meters tall, created by tiny wood
ants in their indigenous woodlands as well as the colorfully decorated mating arenas of
bowerbirds in West Papua; he presents enormous beaver dams in North America or
previously unknown termite fields in Australia.
Besides their dwellings, the different animals, the builders, are shown. Interesting information about biology and numerous fascinating stories about animal architects,
including their applied construction principles and tricks feature beneath the stunning
phtography. Did you know, that when spiders make their webs they adhere to genetically determined blueprints? Or that compass termites align their mounds exactly with
the position of the sun? The book surprise with answers to these and other questions.
Ingo Arndt has counted
among the outstanding
nature photographers
for many years. His photographs regularly appear in magazines such
as GEO, stern, National
Geographic or BBC Wildlife. He has published
twelve books to date and

Photography. Over and
above this, he has also
received the Wildlife

Grandmother’s garden
rediscovered
Cottage gardens are making a comeback. With their typical boxwood borders,
herb and vegetable patches and luxuriant flowers, they are kitchen and flower
gardens rolled into one. They change with the seasons and become more and
more attractive with time– idyllic spots full of rural romanticism which can be
planted in quite small spaces. In this book, the authors present outstanding
examples of this traditional form of garden and their owners and offer tips on
the creation and cultivation of a cottage garden.

Why does Dean Koontz find the death of his father an enormous relief and the death
of his dog an indescribable catastrophe? To what extend does a flower remind
Cornelia Funke of her deceased husband? And why does Margaret Atwood want to
be deep-frozen after her death?
Internationally celebrated authors speak about death. And they do so not just
anywhere, but at death’s abode: the cemetery of their choosing. The journalist
Tobias Wenzel spent four years traveling the world, interviewing over 70 writers in
cemeteries. The astonishing result: stories that often radiate comfort or even come
across as lighthearted. The authors speak teasingly and movingly about their deceased parents, remember a kiss they received in the cemetery as teenagers, or
reveal how they treat the cemetery simply as a park to bird-watch – never has death
been spoken about so personally and so peaceably.

The ultimate style guide
With the Fall of the Wall, dull Berlin-Mitte became a melting pot for young people
from all over the world. At that time there was no other city that left that much space
for new ideas, creativity and their minds: This city wanted to be conquered. And so it
happened. When Angelika Taschen came back to Germany from Los Angeles in 2004,
she chose to make Berlin her new hometown. She wanted to take part in the reinvention of a cosmopolitan city. Now she dedicates a whole book to the unique Berlin style
that has been developed and come of age in this city.
Musts are, for example, cool basics such as military parkas, skinny jeans and fashion
jute. Adding the right accessories will make the appearance perfect – brand logo free
at its best. Patina, used look and vintage treasures complete the new “anti-chic”.
Especially the unfinished look reflects not only the status of Berlin but also what’s so
fascinating about it. Berlin women get their daily dose of inspiration from blogs; they
wear clothes of local labels and shop at independent stores.
Angelika Taschen not only reveals the secrets of Berlin style but the top addresses for
fashion, beauty, design and lifestyle in the city. This includes the hippest as well as the
hidden and unknown shops, eateries from the Turkish kebab to a vegan gourmet
restaurant, beauty spas with natural cosmetics and her own Berlin highlights.
The author has been supported by the experienced fashion journalist Alexa von
Heyden who is running her own jewelry label in Berlin, as well as by Sandra Semburg,
a well-known fashion and streetstyle photographer.
Angelika Taschen is a
notable expert regarding
design and lifestyle issues.
She published more than
150 books on design, fashion, art, photography
and architecture issues.
Alexa von Heyden already worked as a fashion
journalist for Vanity Fair

is called Alexa Peng. In
2007 she found her own
jewellry and accessories
label vonhey und opened
her first shop in Berlin.

Iggy Pop on a fashion show during his time in West-Berlin. They soon get to
know each other better and become a couple for the next seven years. She was

house. Esther documents their time together featuring unique material from
Iggy’s time in Berlin as well as in Los Angeles, London and New York, from

intriguing years.

“two people are necessary for every
work of art: one to create it
and one who needs it” Peggy Guggenheim
The unusual women described in this book have in common an extraordinary instinct
for the artistic currents of their day and contemporary trends. They motivated and
inspired artists as well as supporting them financially. Without them, the history of art
would be poorer today, and many great artists would never have been discovered.
The patrons of the pictorial arts Peggy Guggenheim, Gertrude Stein or Irene Ludwig,
the great sponsor of music Betty Freeman or Milena Ebel, a major supporter of
the arts in general – the biographies of these and other women invite the reader to
discover the story of these strong women whose very names suggest the glamour
of the world of art.

„I sentence you to
death by drowning!“
Kafka's The Judgement tells the story of a quarrel between a father and son, triggered
by a letter written by the son to a friend. The father's bitter reproaches lead to the
repudiation and tragic suicide of the son. Moritz Stetter's illustrations add a new
level to this often-interpreted story. Their expressive style captures the almost
surreal scenery and the fateful course of the quarrel in dark colours and disturbing
pictures.
Moritz Stetter, born in
1983, is a freelance comic-strip artist and illustrator. He became wellknown with his
comic-strip biographies:
Bonhoeffer and Luther. For

“And the Wall will fall”
Willy Brandt is ranked as the most important German politician of the postwar period.
As an international statesman he met and mingled with some of the most colourful
figures of the age―such as George Orwell, Marlene Dietrich and John F. Kennedy.
Brandt was born inot Weimar Germany, but left had to leave the country soon after
the Nazis seized power.
At the end of the WWII he moved to Berlin and soon became mayor of West Berlin.
When the Berlin Wall was built he welcomed US President John F. Kennedy to the city,
where he was to hold the memorable “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech.
When Brandt was elected Chancellor in 1969 his Ostpolitik caused a furore. He visited
East Germany, won the confidence of Leonid Brezhnev and in Warsaw, knelt before
the monument to the Jewish heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. His achievements earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.
Ingrid Sabisch has published a comic on the life
of Albrecht Dürer and a
graphic novel titled 41,3

a comic biography of a girl that

///
based on her life and her letter to
her boyfriend Fritz Hartnagel
“ Laws may change—but not your conscience”
Sophie Scholl
Sophie Scholl has become the face of the German resistence to the Nazi dictatorship.
As the central figure of the Weisse Rose movement, she was a young fearless girl,
facing a ruthless system. This comic biography depicts her fight against the Nazi
dictatorship, war and injustice. And even more: her romantic but also complicated
love to the soldier and officer Fritz Hartnagel, with whom she exchanged her thinking
in conversation and in very intimate letters, that make us understand her growing
into an ardent adversary of Fascism.
