A MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXECUTIVE BOARD
After having the service of
Alex and Maritza Leyva
and Lore Nyul as leaders
of the Calexico High
School Band and Drill
Team Boosters Club, the
torch has been passed to a
new executive board. The
Leyvas and Mrs. Nyul,
along with Mary Saenz,
among others, established
the band boosters organization virtually from zero,
and worked tirelessly for
many years in support of
the band and drill team
programs. Past and present students, as well as
the whole community owe
them a great debt of gratitude for all their efforts.
Now we are starting a
brand new school year,
and we have taken over
as the new executive
board. It is no secret that
the current economic
situation at the state and
national levels has im-
pacted the finances of our
school district like never
before, and its ability to
fund our program has
been severely jeopardized.
It is therefore more important than ever for
every parent to realize
that the future quality of
our kid’s education depends directly on the level
of support and commitment that we as boosters
can provide. We must
work harder and smarter.
We must use every reasonable avenue and opportunity to increase the
band’s visibility in the
community and raise
funds in the traditional as
well as innovative ways.
“United for our Band,
Committed to our
Students “
We must emphasize the
need for every parent to
get involved. Standing on
the sidelines will no
longer be an option, we
must all pull together.
There will be multiple
opportunities to participate; whether working at
the carne asada sale, selling candles, helping with
uniform fittings, chaperoning on road trips, or
volunteering on a task
committee, the chances to
help are as plentiful as
the needs of our students.
All parents will have to be
generous with their time
and money to make this
endeavor a success. As
board members, we
pledge to you that we will
make our most enthusiastic effort to elevate the
program and to produce
not only quality music
students, but exemplary
future citizens that can
proudly say “Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog!!”
Greetings from Mr. Parker: CHS Band Director
Greetings! I am so
excited to be starting
my second year here
in Calexico. We have
come so far in our
first year together
and I see great things in the near future for our band program. We have
many new challenges to face and more
than our fair share of “hurdles.” The
band is getting bigger, therefore we
need more equipment, uniforms,
money, and help from all parents.
Your new booster officers have been
working hard to find creative ways to
make things better for our students. I
am grateful for their (and your) efforts
for our students. We plan on having a
busy, challenging and successful year.
Thank you in advance for supporting
this awesome program.

SPOTLIGHT: ALEXIS VILLALOBOS, CHS DRUM MAJOR
Hello! My name is Alexis A. Villalobos. I
am the Drum Major for the Calexico
"Mighty Bulldog Marching Band & Drill
Team" for the school year 2010-11.
As a Drum Major I expect nothing more
than to be a great leader and help for
my band. I have really high expectations
set for my classmates. I have set myself goals and also for the band. One of
them being, for us to get 1st Place in
Brawley's Cattle Call Parade. Along with
that, letting the pride and name of Calexico High School become more widely
known, by going to more band competitions, which can possibly gain us a lot of
sponsorships. This coming August 2nd,
will be the start of our Band Camp, beginning with our "Rookie Day", which is
the day scheduled for ONLY new members of the band to attend. This is
where they will be taught the "Basics"
of marching techniques and a few of our
main songs like the "Star Spangled Banner" and the CHS Bulldog "Fight
Song" among others. The first day of
Band Camp will mark the beginning of
what will be a great year and an awesome Marching Band that Calexico hasn't seen in over 20 years, with the
Freshmen Class now being a big part of
us. This summer I got the wonderful
opportunity through the help of the
Band Boosters, to attend George N.
Parks Drum Major Academy! While I
was there, I made good friends from all
over the country and learned great
teaching, conducting, and marching
techniques that I'm anxious to try out
with the band! The G.N.P.D.M.A. took
place at UC Riverside and was held from
7/17 - 7/21, where every day we had
"Hands on Training" with George N.
Parks himself. At the Academy, we were
taught the Drum Major Philosophy and
what it means and what it takes to be a
leader, as well as various exercises
that we can try out with our band. The
George N. Parks Drum Major Academy
was a great opportunity for me! I will
use the values I learned there every
day of my life and I will try to implement everything I learned into all of
the performances and attitudes Thank
you for this great opportunity Band
Boosters!!!
With Pride, Alexis Villalobos
Put On Your Thinking Caps—Motto Contest
We need your help!
With the new
school year starting,
the CHS Band and
Drill Parent Association would like to
have a new “motto”
ATTENTION BAND AND
DRILL MEMBERS!!!!!!
that will guide the work we do this
year. However, instead of the parents
creating one, we would like to have
the band and drill members help us.
So . . . we decided to turn it into a contest which will be open only to band
and drill members. To enter the contest you must submit a one sentence
motto that best illustrates what the
band and drill parent association is all
about. You may submit as many as
you want but it must be your original
work. You can’t “borrow” from anything that is already out there. Entries shall be turned in to any member of the Executive Board. Entries
will be received until August 31 and
judging will be done on September 1.
