Janeiro will be in global focus this year.
From the 5th to the 21st of August, this
unique and colourful city will host the
31st Summer Olympic Games. We at Edelweiss are
delighted to announce that from the 22nd of April
this year, we will be offering direct flights from
Zurich to Rio de Janeiro twice weekly. This holiday
destination has more to offer than just the Olympic Games and “Carnival”. I recommend the article
on page 12 of this Sunflyer in which many people
describe their own personal Rio de Janeiro. Equally
fascinating is travelling to Canada’s Wild West city
Calgary. If you would like to experience real cowboy culture, make sure to visit the world’s largest
rodeo show, the “Calgary Stampede” that takes
place at the beginning of July. The event gets 1.5
million visitors that come annually, excited about
the cult that is western riding, steer wrestling and
bull riding. Starting at the end of May, we will be
flying non-stop to Calgary twice a week. Explore

New fleet, new style
Ein Flugzeug wechselt nicht täglich sein Kleid. Die bestehende
Livery, fachsprachlich für die Bemalung, ist seit 20 Jahren
unverändert. Mit der Lieferung der neuen Flottenmitglieder ändert
sich das: Sie sind mit der modernisierten Livery bemalt. Das neue
Design versteht sich als evolutionär. Altbekanntes und Geliebtes
bleibt. Das stolze Edelweiss schmückt nach wie vor die
Heckflosse. Neu steht der Schriftzug «Switzerland» als ganz klares
Bekenntnis der Airline zur Herkunft. Die Livery ist fokussierter
und im Design reduziert. Sie steht für das Wachstum der Airline,
drückt aber auch aus, dass Edelweiss Wert auf Stabilität legt
und Verbesserungen mit Respekt fürs Bestehende anbringt.

It’s not everyday that an aircraft gets a new look. The existing
livery, the technical term for the plane’s painted design, has been
unchanged for 20 years. That is now changing with the delivery
of the new planes in our fleet: they will be painted with the
modern livery. The new design is evolutionary. What is known and
loved will remain. The proud edelweiss will continue to decorate
the tail fin. The word “Switzerland” is new and is a clear statement
from the airline about its origins. The livery is a focused, simplified design. It stands for the airline’s growth, but also expresses
that Edelweiss places a great deal of importance on stability and
constantly improving while still respecting what is already there.

Ab Frühjahr verfügen die Kurzstreckenflugzeuge über ein
drahtloses Unterhaltungssystem an Bord. Fluggäste können mit
ihren Smartphones, Tablets und Notebooks auf verschiedene
Programme zugreifen. Das Angebot reicht von Filmen, Dokumentationen und TV-Serien über Musikkanäle zu digitalen Zeitungen
und Zeitschriften. Mit dem persönlichen Gerät sind alle lizenz­
freien Inhalte abrufbar. Für Filme und Musik ist aus rechtlichen
Gründen die Installation einer App nötig. Für iOS-betriebene
Geräte muss die App im Apple App-Store, für Android via Google
Play Store oder an Bord runtergeladen werden. Es empfiehlt
sich, die App vor dem Flug herunterzuladen, da nur dann alle
Inhalte wie Filme und Musik genutzt werden können.

access a wide variety of films, documentaries and TV series
as well as music channels and digital newspapers and magazines
using their smartphones, tablets and notebooks. All non-licensed
content will be free to access using personal devices. The
installation of an app is legally necessary when it comes to films

from the Apple App Store, the app for Android devices can be

for hiking. For animal lovers there is bird watching, as well as the
wonderful experience of diving in the depths of the Indian Ocean.
While the island was only visited by the most adventurous sailors
up to two hundred years ago, the island can now be flown to
in about eleven hours. From September, Edelweiss will make it
possible to fly directly to this incredible part of the world.

die junge Frau die Reitgerte zwischen ihre Zähne
geklemmt, denn für den Parcours um die Ölfässer
braucht sie beide Hände an den Zügeln. Es riecht

Die Millionenmetropole Calgary im Bundesstaat

Die Freiheit kennt keine Grenzen
Die endlosen Weiten sind ideal für die Rinderzucht
und den Getreideanbau. Und wie zu Zeiten des
Wilden Westens werden die Herden auch heute
noch mit Pferden zusammengetrieben. Klar, dass
die Lebensweise von wildem Abenteuer, grosser
Freiheit und Pionierromantik auch in die moderne
Boom-City schwappt. Ein Line Dance im angesagten Club oder ein Businessman mit Westernboots,
der im John-Wayne-Gang durch die verspiegelten
Hochhausfluchten marschiert, sind keine Seltenheit.
T
he young cowgirl, dashing through the
racecourse in her Western saddle on her
small brown horse, looks like she has
stepped out of a picture book: cowboy
boots, jeans, checked shirt and cowboy hat. Indeed the “Barrel Racing” in Stampede Park in
Calgary is not a folklore event – it is an attitude
toward life. She has cheekily clamped the riding
crop between her teeth, because you need both
hands on the reigns for the course around the oil
barrels. The smells of horse manure, saw dust
and good honest hard work waft through the electrified air: the perfume of the Wild West.
This teeming metropolis of millions, Calgary in the
state of Alberta, is the epicentre of Canada’s cowboy culture. Indeed, in the “Manhattan of Canada”,
oil rakes in the big money, but the real beat of the
city is still the clacking of horses hooves on the
dusty ground of the surrounding prairie.
Freedom knows no bounds
The endless expanse is ideal for cattle breeding
and grain farming. And just like in Wild West times,
the herds are still rounded up with horses. Of
course, the lifestyle of wild adventure, great freedom and pioneer romance has also spilled over
into the modern boom city. A traditional line dance
in a top club or a business man with cowboy boots
who marches through the mirrored high-rise
buildings with a John Wayne gait are not a rarity
here in Calgary.
It is said that real Calgarians only buy their boots
at the Alberta Boot Company, which still manufactures the boots on site using traditional handi­
work – an exception these days, because many
cowboy boots come from far away Asia now.
Traditional craft bootmaker
“200 work steps are required before 14 m² of
leather becomes a finished boot”, explains Ben
Gerwin, who is the third generation to manage
the traditional company from the 70s. Apart from
boots suitable for everyday use made from cowhide, Alberta Boots has become known for primari­
ly specialising in extravagant materials. In the
“treasure box” of the company there are kangaroo,
ostrich, crocodile or stingray skin, which are used
to decorate the boot tips.
Top-class alligator leather
“If you want, you can also have individual special
requests produced”, says Gerwin, who also learnt
the trade of bootmaker. While you can have a
standard pair for around 400 Canadian dollars,
you have to dig deep for extra requests. “Our most
expensive boots cost 4000 dollars, which were
made from 100 % alligator leather.” Around half of
the annual production of 4000 pieces crosses the
counter during Calgary’s “5th season”. What most

music shows, funfair and rodeos. Every year more
than a million visitors make the pilgrimage to the
Stampede Stadium in order to choose the best
Western heroes at the unofficial rodeo world
championship. This year the big occasion takes
place from 8th to 17th July. The star discipline
alongside bull riding and lasso swinging is “Bareback bronc riding” – riding a wild horse without a

The wildest boys in the West
Even 80 kilometres further west, the spirit of great
adventure still prevails. In Banff National Park in
the Canadian Rocky Mountains, wolves, moose
and bears still roam freely through the forest. The
mountain world is a paradise for outdoor fans and
photo hunters alike – and for bear researchers like
Reno Sommerhalder from Switzerland, who settled here to study the life of the grizzlies. “Bears
are a sign of intact nature”, gushes the 50-year-old
during a walk through the national park. If you
take a guided tour with the “bear whisperer”, you

gopher. The earth is still fresh, the bear is somewhere nearby.” Don’t worry: grizzlies avoid coming
near people, but if it does come to an encounter
then it is always good to be armed with bear spray.
A must have when taking a hike in this stunning
wilderness; if you find yourself hiking without any
though just remember to be loud and make noise.
The emotions of our group fluctuate between fascination and terror at the thought of an actual
grizzly bear possibly in the immediate area. However, the king of the Rockies does not show himself
today unfortunately. He only left us a pile of dung
as a greeting. And we, being only leisure western
heroes, still find even this unbelievably exciting.

Die wildesten Kerle des Westens
Auch 80 Kilometer weiter westlich gibt es ihn
noch, den Spirit des grossen Abenteuers. Im Banff
Nationalpark in den kanadischen Rocky Mountains
streifen noch Wölfe, Elche und Bären durch die
Wälder. Die Bergwelt ist ein Paradies für Outdoorfans und Foto-Jäger – und für Bärenforscher, wie
den Schweizer Reno Sommerhalder, der sich hier
niedergelassen hat, um das Leben der Grizzlys zu
studieren. «Bären sind ein Zeichen für eine intakte
Natur», schwärmt der 50-Jährige bei einer Wanderung durch den Nationalpark. Wer mit dem
«Bärenflüsterer» auf eine geführte Tour geht, kann
nicht umhin, Sommerhalders Begeisterung für die
Raubtiere zu teilen.
Sommerhalder zeigt auf riesige Löcher in der Wiesenlandschaft. «Da hat ein Grizzly ein Erdhörnchen
ausgegraben. Die Erde ist noch frisch, der Bär ist
hier irgendwo in der Nähe.» Keine Sorge: Grizzlys
meiden die Nähe zum Menschen. Kommt es dennoch zu einer Begegnung, ist man hier mit einem
Bärenspray bewaffnet.
Das Gefühlsleben unserer Gruppe schwankt zwischen Faszination und einer Heidenangst. Der
König der Rockies zeigt sich an diesem Tag aber
leider nicht. Nur einen Haufen Kot hat er uns als
Gruss hinterlassen. Und wir Freizeit-Westernhelden finden schon das unglaublich spannend.

1. Bären gibt es in vielen Regionen der Welt. Warum
haben Sie sich gerade in Banff niedergelassen?
Ich folge schon lange dem Fluss des Lebens. Dieser hat
mich hierhin gespült und ich bin sehr dankbar dafür.
In einem intakten, dynamischen Ökosystem mit einer
gesunden Bärenpopulation zu Hause sein zu dürfen,
empfinde ich als ein absolutes Privileg. Zudem bietet
die Stadt Banff viele kulturelle Annehmlichkeiten.
1. There are bears in many regions of the world.
Why did you choose to settle in Banff?
I have gone with the flow for a long time. This brought
me here and I am very thankful for that. I think it
is an absolute privilege to be able to live in an intact,
dynamic ecosystem, with a healthy bear population.
In addition, the city of Banff offers many cultural
amenities.

2. You have made researching bears your life’s work.
What fascinates you so much about these animals?
Bears have many attractive qualities. Apart from
their legendary strength, they are intelligent, aesthetic
and particularly modest in their requirements.
Their tolerance towards us humans and our greedy
“lifestyle” knows practically no bounds.

Ruf. Was entgegnen Sie solchen Meinungen?
Der Mensch fürchtet sich vor dem, was er nicht kennt.
Alte Mythen und Märchen wie Rotkäppchen helfen
wenig, Bär oder Wolf als meist friedfertige Wesen zu
sehen. So kenne ich sie jedoch seit bald 30 Jahren.
3. Bears often have a bad reputation in Switzerland.
What is your reply to such opinions?
People are afraid of what they don’t know. Old myths
and fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood do not
help people to see bears and wolves as mostly peaceful
creatures. However, I have come to know them as
such for almost 30 years.
4. Was können wir Menschen von den Bären lernen?
Toleranz, Friedfertigkeit und Anpassungsfähigkeit
sind wichtige bärige Qualitäten, von denen
wir Zweibeiner etwas abschauen könnten.
4. What can people learn from bears?
Tolerance, peacefulness and an ability to adjust are
important qualities of bears, which we bipeds could
learn something from.
5. Die Chance, in den kanadischen Rockies einen
Bären zu sehen, stehen relativ gut. Wie sollte man
bei einer Begegnung reagieren?
Bären sind auch während potenziell gefährlichen
Überraschungsbegegnungen meist sehr tolerant.
Die wichtigste Regel lautet: Bei Wanderungen im
Bärenland, besonders in unübersichtlichem
Gelände, den Bären durch Rufe auf unsere Präsenz
aufmerksam zu machen.
5. The chances of seeing a bear in the Canadian
Rockies is relatively high. How should you react in
the case of an encounter?
Bears are mostly very tolerant of people even during
potentially dangerous surprise encounters. The
most important rule is: when walking or hiking in bear
country, particularly in unclear territory, make sure
that the bears are aware of our presence by using calls,
singing or making noise.

3. Worauf darf Suzuki nach 35 Jahren in der Schweiz
besonders stolz sein?

Xavier Koller, Ihr aktueller Film «Schellen-Ursli»
führt uns in die 40er Jahre zurück, 1945 ist der
Kinderbuchklassiker erschienen.
Die Filmwelt des «Schellen-Ursli» bezieht sich auf
keine konkrete Zeit. Wie in einem Märchen habe
ich in der Glaskugel eine eigene Zeiteinheit geschaffen, die für diese Geschichte stimmt.
Es ist aber klar eine Zeit ohne Elektronik, ohne
Social Media und Smartphones, wie sind die
Reaktionen der heutigen Kinder auf den Film?
Die Kinder fahren ab auf den Film. Ich kriege viele
Rückmeldungen, dass die ganze Familie mehrmals
ins Kino ist. Das Familienerlebnis war unser Ziel,
es soll nicht einfach ein Kinderfilm sein.
Die Erwachsenen erinnern sich an das Buch
aus ihrer Kindheit, aber offenbar wird «SchellenUrsli» heute noch den Kindern erzählt.
Ja, es sagen viele junge Eltern, «Schellen-Ursli»
sei das Lieblingsbuch ihrer Kinder.
Warum denken Sie, sind die Kinder bis heute
von der Geschichte fasziniert?
Der Bub, der sich nicht unterkriegen lässt und sich
mit seinen eigenen Aktionen wehrt. Dazu beeindruckt sein Verständnis für Tiere, die Natur und
deren Wildheit.
Und sein Kampf um Gerechtigkeit. Warum
war es Ihnen wichtig, diesen alten Schweizer
Wert zu betonen?
Das ist nicht nur ein Schweizer Wert, sondern ein
genereller. Jeder muss sich damit auseinandersetzen, was richtig, was falsch, was gut, was böse ist,
das sind Grundsatzfragen des sozialen Daseins.
Aber die vertretenen Werte sind schon schweizerisch, gerade dieses Ehrenwort, was eine
komische Komponente annimmt, weil es quasi
zum Running Gag wird und die Leute sich
kreuzweise darin verheddern.
Das gehört zum dramatischen Schaffen, dass man
solche Elemente bedient, die sich wiederholen und
bei der Auflösung eine entscheidende Rolle, jedoch in der Gegenrichtung spielen. Bei der Ehrenwort-Geschichte gehts auch darum, schlauer sein
zu wollen als die anderen, was ebenfalls etwas ist,
das den Kindern gefällt.
Beeindruckend sind die Szenen mit dem Wolf.
Kamen die Kinder ihm wirklich so nahe?
Es ist ein dressierter Filmwolf, der dennoch den
meisten Menschen ausweicht. Jonas Hartmann,
der «Schellen-Ursli» spielt, hat eine natürliche
Gabe, mit Tieren umzugehen und sich schnell mit
diesem Wolf angefreundet, das hat viel geholfen.
In vielen Ihrer Filme ist die Szenerie der
Schweizer Berge im Schnee entscheidend.
Was fasziniert Sie an der Winterbergwelt?
Ich bin in der Innerschweiz aufgewachsen, aber

Xavier Koller, your current film “Schellen Ursli”
takes us back into the 1940s, the classic children’s
book was published for the first time in 1945.
The film world created in “Schellen Ursli” still does
not refer to a specific period of time though. Just
like in a fairytale, I have created a period of time
within a bubble just for this story.
It is still though clearly a time without electronic
devices, without social media and smartphones, what are the reactions from children
today to the film?
The children love the film. I get feedback from
families who have been to see the film a number
of times already in the cinema. It was our goal to
make it an experience for the whole family, and
not just a film for children.

kein Berggänger. Die Berge sind imposant und
strahlen eine Kraft aus. Ich sehe jedoch weniger
das Romantische, sondern respektiere die Berge
und auch ihre Gefahren.
Was hat das für die Dreharbeiten bedeutet?
Auf die lokalen Leute zu hören war wichtig, die
Förster, Waldarbeiter, Berggänger und Jäger wissen, was tolerierbar ist und was nicht. Als wir an
gefährlichen Orten drehten, wie in der Schlucht,
da braucht es schon Aufmerksamkeit, dass da
niemand runterfällt, da reicht ein falscher Schritt.
Was ist das Wichtigste, was man können muss,
wenn man Filmregie führt?
Geduld haben (lacht). Nein, im Ernst: Man muss
Vertrauen geben, gut hinschauen und gut auf Personen reagieren können. Wichtig ist auch, schnell
herauszufinden, wie man mit wem reden muss,
childhoods, but it would seem that the story
of “Schellen Ursli” is still being told to children
today.
Yes, a lot of young parents say that “Schellen Ursli”
is their children’s favourite book.
Why do you think that children are still
fascinated by the story right up until today?
The boy who does not let things get the better of
him and who takes action to help himself. And his
knowledge and understanding of animals, nature
and their wildness are impressive as he does this.
And his fight for justice. Why was it important
for you to emphasise this old Swiss value?
That is not only a Swiss value, but a general one.
Every­one has to think for themselves about what
is right, what is wrong, what is good, what is bad,
they are fundamental questions of our social
existence.
But the values championed are Swiss values,
especially this word of honour, which takes on
a funny aspect because it becomes a kind of
running gag and people start getting tangled
up in it completely.
That is part of creating drama, that you take
elements like that, which repeat themselves and
which play a decisive role at the end, but which
play in the opposite direction. When it comes to
the word-of-honour story, that is about wanting
to be smarter than the others, something that is
also what children like.
The scenes with the wolf are impressive,
did the children really get that close to it?
It is a trained film wolf, but it still largely avoids
people. Jonas Hartmann, who plays Schellen Ursli,
has a natural talent for interacting with animals

damit man das bekommt, was man braucht. Und
man muss den Schauspielerinnen und Schauspielern Freiheit lassen, damit sie kreativ sein können,
dass es unmittelbar und spontan wird.
Das klingt nach einer zwischenmenschlichen
Aufgabe mit viel Gefühl für die Charaktere im
Film wie auch für die Schauspieler.
Auch fürs technische Team. Es müssen alle auf
derselben Welle reiten, auch die Kulissenbauer. Ich
muss sie inspirieren und motivieren, ihnen aber
kreative Freiheit lassen, dass sie etwas entwickeln können, an dem sie Freude
haben. Die Filmarbeit ist immer
kollaborativ. Und man muss die
richtigen Leute finden, je besser
die sind, desto mehr Freiheit hat
man.
Muss man Menschen gern
haben, um Regisseur zu sein?
Ich hab gerne Menschen, aber es
gibt ja auch Regisseure, die Menschen nicht gerne haben und die
machen ja auch gute Filme (lacht). Für mich ist
gegenseitiger Respekt etwas Wichtiges und es soll
allen Spass machen, denn hart ist es sowieso, besonders in den Bergen bei Minustemperaturen. Worum geht es beim Film, ausser darum, eine
Geschichte zu erzählen?
Man muss elliptisch erzählen, damit der Zuschauer mitdenken und seine Vorstellungskraft aktivieren muss. Das Vergnügen beim Film liegt darin,
nicht nur von aussen zu schauen, sondern reinzugehen, dort zu stehen, dann kommen die Emotionen. Die Zuneigung der Zuschauer zu den Charakteren muss man kreieren, auch zu den eher
unsympathischen. Zum Beispiel indem man wie in
«Schellen-Ursli» die «Bösen» gleichzeitig zu den
Komikern macht.
Sie wohnen in den USA, warum?
Es öffnet den Horizont, im Ausland Luft zu schnappen. Und in den USA gibt es einen gigantischen
kreativen Pool von guten Leuten, von denen man
lernen kann.
Was ist der Unterschied zwischen den
Menschen in den USA und in der Schweiz?
Zwischen den Menschen ist kein Unterschied, es
sind einfach Menschen. Die Mentalität, das Denken
ist anders, aber man findet Freunde, die ähnlich
denken. Politisch sieht es anders aus und filmpolitisch nochmals anders, der Film ist in den USA
eine Industrie, in der Schweiz nicht.
Was ist wahr am «You can do it»-Klischee?
Das ist eine Energie, die man in den USA mitbekommt. Der Schweizer sagt statt «You can do it»
eher: «Jää, weiss nicht, meinst du? Ist vielleicht
schwierig ...» Der Amerikaner weiss einfach, dass
es schwierig ist, aber galoppiert dennoch vorwärts. Rennt er in eine Wand, sagt er: «Aha, da
war eine Wand, die hab ich nicht gesehen», dreht
and quickly made friends with this wolf, that
helped a lot.
The Swiss Alps covered in snow is a decisive
element in many of your films. What fascinates
you about the mountains in the winter?
I grew up in central Switzerland, though I’m not a
mountaineer. The mountains are imposing and
radiate an energy. I respect the mountains and
their dangers.
What did that mean for the filming?
To listen to the advice of locals was important, the

forest rangers, lumberjacks, mountaineers and
hunters know what can be tolerated and what not.
When we filmed at dangerous places, such as in
the gorge, you need to keep your wits about you
there so no one falls, one false step is enough.
What is the most important thing that you need
to know when directing a film?
Have patience (laughs). No, really, I’m being serious. You have to give trust, you have to take a
good look and react well towards people. What is
also important is to quickly find out how you
should talk with whom so that each person gets
what they need. And you have to give the actors
the freedom so that they can be creative, so that
it becomes direct and spontaneous.
That sounds like an interpersonal task requiring
a good sense of feeling for the characters in the
film, as well as for the actors.
Also for the technical team. Everyone has to be
singing from the same hymn sheet, even the guys
building the backgrounds. I have to inspire and
motivate them, give them the creative freedom so
that they can develop and enjoy it at the same
time. Working on a film is always collaborative in
nature. And you have to find the right people,
the better they are, the more freedom you have
yourself.
Do you have to like people in order to be
a director?
I like people, but there are also directors who don’t
like people and they still make good films. (laughs)
For me, mutual respect is something important
and everyone should have fun, because it’s definitely going to be difficult along the way, especially when the temperatures are below zero in the
mountains.
What is film about apart from telling a story?

Schauspielerjahren wurde er 1991
als Regisseur vom Film «Reise
der Hoffnung» bekannt, welcher
den Oscar für den besten nichtenglischsprachigen Film erhielt.
Zu seinen weiteren Filmerfolgen
zählen u.a. «Der schwarze
Tanner»(1985) und «Das gefrorene
Herz» (1979). Seit 1991 lebt
und arbeitet er in Los Angeles.
Xavier Koller was born in Schwyz
in 1944. After a number of
years as an actor, in 1991 he came
to fame as director of the film
“Journey of Hope”, which won the
best foreign language film Oscar.
Among his other successful works
are “Tanner” (1985) and “The
Frozen Heart” (1979). He has lived
and worked in Los Angeles since
1991.

You have to tell the story elliptically so that you
make the audience think and make those in the
audience have to activate their imaginations. The
enjoyment of a film is not to watch it from the
outside looking in, but to get inside the film, stand
within it, it is then that the emotions surface. You
have to create the emotional attachment that an
audience has to a character, even if the character
is more the non-likeable type. For example, in
“Schellen Ursli”, where the bad guys also provide
the comic relief.
You live in the USA, why?
It opens up your horizons to live abroad. And there
is such a massive pool of talented people in the
USA from whom you can learn.
What is the main difference between people in
the USA and Switzerland?
There are no differences, they are just simply people. The mentality, the way of thinking is different,
but you find friends who think the same way you
do. Politically it is different and in a film-political
sense it is different again. Film is an industry in the
USA, it’s not that way in Switzerland.
What is true about the “You can do it” cliché?
There is an energy that you pick up on in the USA.
Instead of “you can do it”, the Swiss person is more
inclined to say: “Yeah, I don’t know, what do you
think? It might be difficult ...” The American knows
it's difficult, but gallops forwards all the same. If he
runs into a wall, he says: “Aha, there’s a wall there
that I didn’t see”, turns around, and heads off in a
direction where there is perhaps no wall in their
way. Whoever wants something, they’re going to
have to work hard for it, they’ll have to invest energy and transfer this onto the other people who
you want to get involved. When I look at my Swiss
colleagues, they are all always half depressed. I
wanted to get away from that as it was.
How often do you fly back to Switzerland?
Often, I spent more time in Switzerland, Germany
and Italy than in the USA in the past four years
because I made three films in four years. I usually
fly two to three times a year to Switzerland.
What do you need to feel comfortable on
board?
Good quality food, it doesn’t have to be much, but
it has to be good. People taking care of you who
don’t give you the feeling that theirs is a difficult
job. It doesn't have to be over-the-top friendly, but
with charm.
Do you also have time to go on holiday?
Not much, we sometimes go skiing here in Mammoth Mountain, that is five hours from Los Angeles and a wonderful skiing region. I otherwise like
being at home because I have travelled half the
world for the film festivals.
Is there any wise saying that you have learned
from all the travelling?
Be open for things that are strange and foreign.

um und geht in eine Richtung, wo vielleicht keine
Wand ist. Wer etwas will, muss Gas geben, Energie
aufbringen und diese auf die Leute übertragen,
die man involvieren will. Wenn ich meine Schweizer Kollegen anschaue, die sind immer so halb
depressiv. Dem wollte ich sowieso entkommen.
Wie oft fliegen Sie zurück in die Schweiz?
Oft, die letzten vier Jahre war ich ja mehr in der
Schweiz, Deutschland und Italien als in den USA,
weil ich drei Filme gemacht habe in vier Jahren.
In die Schweiz fliege ich mindestens zwei bis
dreimal pro Jahr.
Was brauchen Sie fürs Wohlfühlen an Bord?
Qualitativ gutes Essen, es muss nicht viel sein, aber
gut. Eine Betreuung, die einem nicht das Gefühl
gibt, ihr Job sei mühsam. Es muss nicht überfreundlich sein, aber charmant.
Haben Sie auch Zeit für Ferien?
Weniger, manchmal gehen wir Skifahren hier in
Mammoth Mountain, das ist fünf Stunden von
Los Angeles entfernt ein wunderbares Skigebiet.
Sonst bin ich gern zu Hause, weil ich beruflich für
die Filmfestivals schon die halbe Welt bereist habe.
Gibt es eine Weisheit, die Sie von all den Reisen
mitnehmen konnten?
Offen sein für das Fremde. Und wenn das Fremde
zu einem kommt, nicht erschrecken. Reisen heisst,
etwas Neues entdecken und wenn andere die
Reise in die andere Richtung machen – aus irgendeinem Grund – müssen wir genauso offen sein.
Darum geht es auch in Ihrem Oscar-gekrönten
Film «Reise der Hoffnung». Er ist nun ja
aktueller denn je. Denken Sie in letzter Zeit viel
an diese Dreharbeiten zurück?
Ja, die Situation ist inzwischen noch viel tragischer
als damals. Und viel konfuser und komplexer. «Reise der Hoffnung» wird restauriert und kommt
nochmals ins Fernsehen.
Sie sprechen die Offenheit gegenüber dem
Fremden an, gibt es eine Begegnung auf einer
Reise, die Sie nie mehr vergessen?
Jede Reise hat ihren Höhepunkt, manchmal sind
es Leute, manchmal Städte oder ein Erlebnis. Ich
schaue einfach gern hin.
Sind so auch Filmcharaktere entstanden?
Wir arbeiten ja mit dem Kopf und mit dem Gefühl
und was da drin gespeichert ist, was man beobachtet, gelesen, gehört, gesehen, erlebt hat, ist
Teil der eigenen Substanz, aus der man schöpft,
ob man will oder nicht.
Wofür interessieren Sie sich besonders in der
Fremde ausser für die Menschen?
Für Speisen, was drin ist und warum sie mir schmecken oder nicht. Ich probiere auch gerne Wein aus
der Gegend. Es ist das Sinnliche, was mich interessiert, wie die Leute angezogen sind, wie sie sich
bewegen, wie die Frauen sich bewegen. Das inspiriert für ganz neue Filmwelten, vielleicht sogar
neue Zeiteinheiten, die es so gar nicht gibt.

And if that something strange or foreign comes
to you, don’t be scared. Travelling means discovering something different and when others undertake the journey in the opposite direction – for
whatever reason – we must be just as open.
That is what your Oscar-winning film “Journey
of Hope” is about. It is more current than it
has ever been. Have you thought back on the
making of this film recently?
Yes, the situation is now far more tragic than it
was back then. And a lot more confusing and complex. “Journey of Hope” is being reworked and will
be shown on television.
You spoke about the openness towards
foreign things, was there an encounter on your
journeys that you will never forget?
Each journey has its highlights, it is sometimes
the people, the cities or a single event. I just like
to look.
Were some of the characters in your films
created in this way?
We work with our minds after all and what is stored
in them, what you observed, what you read, heard,
saw, experienced is part of the substance of what
you are – like it or not.
What are you most interested in when you’re
abroad apart from people?
Food, what’s in it and why I find it tasty or not. I
also like to try wines from the local region. It is
the sensual that interests me, how people are
dressed, how they move, how the women move.
That is inspiration for brand-new film worlds, even
for new eras that never actually existed.

s gibt keine schönere Stadt auf Erden, und
es gibt kaum eine unergründlichere, unübersichtlichere. Man wird nicht fertig mit
Rio de Janeiro», dieses Zitat stammt vom
Schriftsteller Stefan Zweig. Zweig entdeckte schon
Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts den starken
Kontrast, welcher sich bis heute noch verstärkt
hat. Rio de Janeiro kann für seine Besucherinnen
und Besucher wie auch Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner alles sein: Entspannend am Strand der
Copacabana und leidenschaftlich laut im Ausgehquartier Lapa, reich in den Luxusvillen und arm in
den zahlreichen Favelas. Doch so gut wie nirgends auf der Welt existieren
diese Welten näher beieinander als hier. Wer Rio
de Janeiro besucht, der findet sein eigenes Rio,
welches nicht gleich ist wie dieses, welches Reiseführer oder Freunde beschreiben. Rio sieht bei
jedem Besuch anders aus und begeistert immer
wieder aufs Neue.
Die Armen blicken auf die Reichen hinunter
Seit den Vorbereitungen auf die WM 2014 und die
Olympischen Spiele 2016, verbessert sich auch der
Ruf von Rio de Janeiro. Während viele Ortsteile
früher absolut unzugänglich waren, sind ein grosser Teil der Favelas heute befriedet. Zudem wurde
viel in den öffentlichen Verkehr investiert. So verkehren heute teils moderne Busse und das Strassenbahn- und U-Bahn-Netz wurde ebenfalls ausgebaut. Wir begleiten Alex Silva Birkutz auf eine
Tour durch sein Zuhause. Die Favela Rocinha ist
aufgrund der Lage oberhalb von den Million-Dollar-Apartments der Praia de São Conrado weltberühmt geworden. Nirgends wird der Kontrast von
Rio de Janeiro deutlicher als hier. Während wir auf
einem Dach eines der Häuser der Favela stehen,
sehen wir auf Apartments herunter, deren Kaufpreis bei rund 900 000 Dollar beginnen. Jahrelang galt diese Favela als Umschlagplatz von
Drogen und Waffen. Selbst die Polizei traute sich
nicht ohne Begleitung des Militärs in die Favela.
Heute haben die Menschen hier ein neues und
friedliches Business gefunden: den Tourismus.
Alex Silva sagt, dass das Leben hier heute entspannter geworden ist. Gleichzeitig hat man jedoch auch Angst davor, das Immobilienspekulanten die Favela übernehmen könnten. Die Aussicht
auf den Strand, die Lage direkt am Berg und mitten in Rio de Janeiro – kein Zweifel: Es besteht
definitiv Interesse an solch einer Lage. Daher ist
Alex auch dankbar für die Gäste auf seiner Tour
und die Gäste danken es Alex, denn nie zuvor
konnte man einen spannenderen Einblick in den
Kontrast dieser Metropole gewinnen.

here is perhaps not a more beautiful city
on earth, and hardly any more inscrutable
or more complex. “You are never finished
with Rio de Janeiro”, this quote comes
from author Stefan Zweig. Zweig discovered the
stark contrast at the beginning of the nineteenth
century, which has intensified even further today.
Rio de Janeiro can be a bit of everything for its
visitors and inhabitants: relaxing on the beach of
Copacabana and passionately loud in the goingout district of Lapa, rich in luxury villas and poor
in the numerous favelas.
Yet there is almost nowhere in the world where
these worlds exist so closely as here. If you visit
Rio de Janeiro, you will find your own Rio, which
is not the same as the one that your guidebook or
friends describe. Rio looks different with every
visit and inspires you every time.

The poor look down at the rich
Since the preparations for the World Cup 2014 and
the Olympic Games 2016, Rio de Janeiro’s reputation has improved. While many districts were previously absolutely inaccessible, today, the majority of the favelas have been pacified. In addition,
a great deal has been invested in public transport.
So today, some modern buses are running, and
the tram and underground network were also
extended. We accompany Alex Silva Birkutz on a
tour of his home. The Favela Da Rocinha has become world famous, due to the location above the
million dollar apartments of Praia de Sao Conrado.
Nowhere is the contrast of Rio de Janeiro clearer
than here. While we stand on a roof of one of the
houses of the favela, we look down on apartments with purchase prices starting at around
$900 000.

Schweizer Künstler Walter Riedweg einen spannenden Tipp: Das Quartier Santa Teresa, welches
heute als Hotspot der Künstler in Rio de Janeiro
gilt. Hier gibt es von der Stickerei bis hin zu
modernster Street Art alles zu entdecken. Santa
Teresa erreicht man am bequemsten mit dem historischen, gelben Santa-Teresa-Tram, welches vom
Gebäude der Petrobras aus fährt. Mitten im Quartier führt Walter Riedweg ein kleines hübsches
Boutiquehotel – die Villa Laurinda.
Für Kunstinteressierte ebenfalls von Interesse ist
die Escadria Selarón: Diese berühmte Fliesentreppe des Künstler Jorge Selarón, welcher 2013 an
einem Morgen tot auf seiner Treppe aufgefunden
wurde. Die Umstände seines Todes sind bis heute
nicht restlos aufgeklärt worden. Bis zu seinem Tod
hin haben ihm Fans aus der ganzen Welt einzelne
Fliesen zugesandt, welche Jorge dann in seiner
Treppe einfügte.

Bei einer Reise nach Rio de Janeiro darf ein Besuch
der Christus-Statue nicht fehlen. Mit einem Besuch

and weapons. Even the police did not dare to enter the favela without military backup. Today, the
people here have found a new and peaceful business: tourism. Alex Silva says that life here has
become more relaxed. At the same time however,
people are worried that property developers could
take over the favela. The view of the beach, the
location directly on the mountain and in the middle of Rio de Janeiro – no doubt: there is definitely interest in such a location. Therefore, Alex
is also grateful for the guests on his tour and the
guests thank Alex, because never before could you
get such insight into the contrast of this city.
For guests that want to relax, but have seen
enough of the beach, the Swiss artist Walter Riedweg has an exciting tip: the Santa Teresa district,
which is seen as a hot spot for artists in Rio de
Janeiro today. Here you can discover everything
from embroidery to ultra modern street art. You
can reach Santa Teresa most easily with the historical, yellow Santa Teresa tram, which departs
from the Petrobras building. In the middle of the
district, Walter Riedweg runs a small, pretty boutique hotel – Villa Laurinda.

Abend hin. Dann lässt sich nämlich ein einmaliges

kann nicht schöner sein. Sterne auch am kulinarischen Himmel Wer dann noch nicht genug von der Abendstimmung hat, fährt am besten in das Quartier Lapa.

normal. Dazu ein kulinarisches Highlight aus der
brasilianischen Küche.
Wer sich in Rio de Janeiro kulinarisch begeistern
lassen möchte, ist im Restaurant Olympe genau
richtig. Claude Troisgros, ausgezeichnet mit einem
Michelin-Stern, zaubert hier seinen Gästen ein Lächeln auf die Lippen und wahre Gaumenfreuden
auf die Zunge. Das Menü ist wie eine Reise von
Frankreich nach Brasilien und begeistert durch
Auserlesenheit in den Zutaten und Perfektionismus in der Zubereitung. Das Olympe ist so göttlich
wie der Name verspricht, darum empfiehlt sich
eine frühzeitige Reservation. In Rio lässt man es

The Parco dell’Etna stretches from the crater of
the volcano right down to the gates of Catania, it
is the second largest city on the island of Sicily.
“We live here with the latent fear that the volcano

in 40-jähriger Arbeit vom französischen Maler
Jacques Majorelle. Lotusblumen, Palmen, Kakteen und andere exotische Pflanzen fügen sich
in die ockerfarbene Umgebung von Marrakesch ein. «Unser Museum zeigt Kostüme, Waffen und Schmuck der Berber-Kultur», erklärt
Quito Fierro. Modedesigner Yves Saint Laurent
kaufte 1980 den Park und bewahrte ihn davor,
einem Hotelkomplex zum Opfer zu fallen.
In den schottischen Highlands wandern und
sich wie der schottische Unabhängigkeitskämpfer Sir William Wallace im Film Braveheart
fühlen: Möglich ist das im Loch Lomond & The
Trossachs National Park. «Pàirc Nàiseanta Loch
Laomainn is nan Tròisichean, so heisst unser
Park auf gälisch. Der Eintritt ist das ganze Jahr
frei», erklärt Fiona Thompson, Senior Ranger.

The French painter Jacques Majorelle worked
to build up the 1.3-hectare garden over the
course of 40 years. Lotus blossoms, palm trees,
cacti and other exotic plants are to be found in
the ochre-coloured surroundings of Marrakesh.
“A museum displays clothing, weapons and
jewellery of the Berber culture”, explains Quito
Fierro. The fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent
purchased the park in 1980 and prevented it
from being replaced by a hotel complex.
Hiking in the Scottish Highlands and feeling a

Seit Anfang Juni 2014 sind die beiden Edelweiss Langstreckenmaschinen A330-200 und A330-300 mit umgebauten
Kabinen unterwegs. Die neue Business Class von Edelweiss
verfügt nun über Fully Lie-Flat-Sitze, die sich in zwei Meter
lange Betten verwandeln lassen. Optimaler Komfort, exzellenter
Service und das neue Unterhaltungssystem mit den grossen
16" HD Touchscreens garantieren einen unvergesslichen Flug.
Dank der neu eingeführten Economy Max kommen die Fluggäste nun in den Genuss von mehr Platz und weiteren Annehmlichkeiten. Auch die Economy Class wurde mit neuen Sitzen
und einem neuen Unterhaltungssystem mit Touchscreens
aufgerüstet.
The focus of Edelweiss is on innovation and state-of-the-art
technology. Since June 2014, the refurbished cabins of
the A330-300 and A330-200 aircraft offer a more comfortable
interior on Edelweiss long-haul flights. The new Edelweiss
Business Class features fully lie-flat seats that can be converted
into two-metre long beds. Optimal comfort, excellent service
and a new in-flight entertainment system with large 16-inch HD
touch screens ensure a superior travel experience. In the new
Economy Max, Edelweiss passengers can enjoy more space and
several other amenities. What is more, new seats and a new
in-flight entertainment system, including touch screens, ensure
greater comfort in Economy Class.
