attended Arts Richmond’s
th
50 Anniversary Exhibition,
at the Stable’s Gallery,
Orleans House, in Twickenham
between 10 March to 24 April.
On Saturday 23 April Sir David
Attenborough read his favourite
sonnet alongside readers from a wide
range of Arts Richmond’s affiliated
societies for a continuous reading of
the complete series of Shakespeare’s
th
154 Sonnets to mark the 400
Anniversary of the Bard’s death.
The Exhibition and Showcase
weekends gave 100+ affiliated
organisations the opportunity to
showcase their talents to new
audiences.
We covered news of the Visual Arts,
Drama and Heritage Showcases last
month. These were followed on 16 &
17 April with taster sessions from
affiliated music organisations.
On Saturday 14 May, over £1,000 of
original paintings and other artworks
by members of Arts Richmond
affiliated art societies were sold at
Arts Richmond’s Affordable Art Tent
at the May Fair on Richmond Green.
s
On Sunday 24 April, Sara Burn
Edwards gave a fascinating lecture
about Sam Wanamaker’s quest to
rebuild Shakespeare’s Globe.
This was followed by a drinks party in
the Stables Gallery to mark the end of
The Golden Thread Exhibition with
suitably Shakespearian music from
Will Summers of Loki Music.

battle had almost cost him his steed
and more importantly, his life. As he
stood in the vast open plains of the
shadow realm, the dust at his mount’s
hooves rising and thick like insects
swarming around them, he studied
the landscape before him. He thought
back on how he had defeated the
menace and how in doing so a black
priest driven by dark-arts had snuck
up on him. If it hadn't been for his
faithful squire he would be dead. The
priest had crushed a bone in his
weaker arm with his mace before the
squire had beheaded him. Now he
wished to get his revenge. He sought
to defeat the mighty Aroundia, the
Black Queen and the most powerful
of enemies. Destroying her would
guarantee victory for his alliance - he
would then be in perfect position to
overthrow the King and win the war.
Back in the enemy ground, the few
trees around him were creaking and
groaning as if in pain. Moving silently
towards the dreaded lady monarch
(his squire following close behind the
horse) an evil foot-soldier appeared in
the way of his path, as if out of
nowhere. Strategically, he knew that
if he hurdled the soldier, he'd get
caught.
Yet if he didn't jump his plan would
get foiled. Miraculously, a clerk
clothed in white and with lightning
velocity charged, slamming into the
enemy infantryman. He recognized
him from his homeland. "Go!" The
priest said, “Run!” The squire did not
hesitate, yet the paladin waited and
thought. After he’d decided that it
was safe, he leaped over the priest
without incident. But there were
more problems to come…
In front of him loomed a large enemy
castle. Black and ruined, it seemed to
be moving towards him by some kind
of force he could not explain. He only
had one chance to evade it. When the
tower was a mere meter or two away
from him he leaped agilely to one
side, dodging it. He saw where he was
going to land and smiled, for there
stood the malicious monarch - it must
have been her magic moving the
castle. With a slash of his sword, he
slew the enemy queen, giving out a
battle cry.
Aroundia was no more and the evil
King was so weakened now, it would
only be a matter of time before he
fell. There was one more move to
make as the frail King, now
unprotected by his queen, moved
away from the paladin with a
desperate attempt to escape. The
faithful squire advanced towards the
vile lord, and proclaimed,
"CHECKMATE!"
The boy looked up from the board.
This was the first time he had beaten
his opponent and he was proud of
himself. “Well done” smiled his
granddad.
