ART WEEK #1

With every new edition we witness the birth of a new
adventure, full of new projects, new artists and new
partners joining us every year.
For its 4th edition, BEIRUT ART FAIR has gathered 46
galleries from 14 countries that represent the works
of hundreds of artists. This massive art centralization
will allow us to admire the diversity of the artworks
and highlight each artist’s unique contribution to the
dynamics of artistic globalization.
The introduction of South East Asian art is the highlight
of this year’s edition. The reciprocity in the relationship
between the Arab world and that region reveals itself
through the exhibitions organised in various museums
and through the work of artists exposed in the galleries.
It is that same willingness to share and discover that
animates artists in both regions. They have the same
dynamism, creativity, a very deeply rooted value of
belonging and an interest for emerging talents longing
for acknowledgment. Furthermore, the figures at the
auctions are consistently excellent for both markets.
It is in that frame of mind that we have created the South
East Asia Pavilion that is bound to develop further in the
coming years.
Aiming, from the start, to offer a hybrid fair that is not
only centred around commercial transactions but also
one that advance a rich cultural program, we continue to
organise several events that broaden our horizons.
Thus, the young Lebanese designers will stage their
work at the especially dedicated BLC DESIGN PLATFORM
to them following the thorough selection of art critic
Jérôme Sans.
Light will also be shed on photography with the
presentation of an unprecedented exhibition entitled
«GENERATION WAR» curated by Katya Traboulsi.
This exhibition, with the French Journalist & Senior
correspondent Marine Jacquemin as Godmother,
regroups the photos of 6 internationally renowned
Lebanese photographers and reporters born in the 1960s.
Alongside this exhibition, the second edition of the
BYBLOS BANK AWARD for Lebanese photography will
surely unveil new talents.
In an effort to associate itself with the city’s cultural
effervescence, BEIRUT ART FAIR will go « beyond the
walls » and will launch for the first time, in collaboration
with Solidere & the Municipality of Beirut, the BEIRUT
ART WEEK. During this outreach week, numerous
monumental art works will be scattered all around the
streets and luxury boutiques of Downtown Beirut.
Our policy of openness to all contemporary artistic
practices and our desire to offer a better exposure to all
the artists and all those who contribute to their success,
don’t affect our quality standards. This is our current and
upcoming challenge that we intend to accomplish.
Alongside other cultural bodies, BEIRUT ART FAIR helps
rekindle the interest of collectors and professionals from
around the world in the Lebanese artistic scene.
Having been attached to Lebanon for more than 20 years,
this is my utmost satisfaction.
Enhance the influence of Lebanon on the international
scene has been and still is what motivates us. On its first
edition that will take place from November 27 till 30,
2014, the SINGAPORE ART FAIR will bring to the forefront
a Lebanese Pavilion.
In less than four years, BEIRUT ART FAIR has extended
his outreach to the regional and international arenas.
I am happy and honoured to announce that this year’s
edition is under the High Patronage of His Excellency, the
President of the Republic of Lebanon,
General Michel SLEIMAN.
I would like to thank all the galleries that are
participating in the fair, the speakers, the artists, the
press, the friends, our partners and especially BankMed
& Solidere who are great supporters of our ambitions, as
well as our great team without whom BEIRUT ART FAIR
2013 would have never seen the light.

COLLECTIVE
PERSPECTIVE

Over the last decade, contemporary Southeast Asian art
has grown spectacularly, with increasing numbers of
artists having exhibitions not only in their home country,
but also abroad with varied participation in art fairs, institutional shows and biennales.
Accompanying this increase in interest in contemporary
Southeast Asian art is also the rise of prices of some of
these artists at auctions.
This has led to some defining the value of the art from
the region as only correlated to how much it can sell at
auction.
Many people remain unaware of the talent in Southeast
Asia in the contemporary art field, viewing our art based
on the auction prices or dismissing it as simply decorative
as just something tourists might buy while visiting on
vacation. This is far from the case, especially to collectors
who habitually support emerging artists of the region and
later sometimes benefitting from their increasing notoriety. To the knowledgeable, certain artworks and artists
of this region immediately tell a story of national identity,
political unrest, and cultural distinction.
The works selected for the Beirut Art Fair are meant
to be an overview of the contemporary art scene that is
flourishing in the region and also to highlight the diversity
and intrinsic nature of an ever-evolving process.
It also showcases the different stylistic experimentations
and the variety of techniques currently employed by the
artists which accentuate and describe the evolution of art
in this region, ranging from sculptures, video, sound art,
photography and many other various forms, each having
its own unique characteristics which tells its own story.

GENERATION WAR
The 80s was a troubled
time. Lebanon was caught
in the throes of war. But six
young Lebanese in their
twenties at the time were
fearless. They attempted to
immortalize moments of a
raging war and in doing so
unknowingly set out upon
a path that would change
their lives.
Photography embraced
them. The Lebanese war
became the stage of their
debut. Carnage, pain
and destruction became
their props. Who knew
they would go on to build
a successful career and
become some of the most
renowned photographers
and reporters of the Arab
world? But against all
102
odds, they did, and have
received recognition in the
shape of many regional
and global accolades since
then.
‘Generation War’ is an
exceptional exhibition; it
retraces in visual chapters
the stories of those who
lived in a war that marked
an entire generation of
Lebanese. It is an artistic
recognition of their
magnificent talent and a
tribute to the courage of
six photographers as they
captured a turbulent era
in history, oblivious to the
danger. They risked their
lives with every click. Every
picture pieces together
their life over time.

Photographer and visual
artist Samer Mohdad was
born in Bzebdine, Lebanon, in
1964. After finishing studies
in photography at St-Luc in
Liège, Belgium, he started
working for the Agence Vu in
Paris in 1988. He was commissioned in 1990 by the Musée
de l›Elysée in Lausanne to
photograph the Swiss army for
the book and exhibition “Voir la
Suisse Autrement”. In 1991, he
produced a photographic essay
on Lebanon after the civil war.
After obtaining the Belgian
citizenship, he was able to
travel freely to accomplish his
visions about the Arabs mutat-
ing societies.
In his following project, “War
Children, Lebanon 1985-1992”,
he examined childhood during
the Lebanese civil war. He then
moved on to the Palestinian issue in “Return to Gaza”, a dual
portrait of 415 Palestinians
deported to south Lebanon in
1992 and their return to the
Gaza Strip in 1994. In 1997, he
co-founded the “Association
for the Preservation of Arab
Photography” along with
fellow photographers Fouad
el-Khoury and Akram Zaatari.
He curated photography
exhibitions at the Rencontres
Internationales de la Photog-

won in 1999 the Mother Jones
Award in San Francisco for his
book Mes Arabies, first in his

exhibited at the IFA galleries in
Stuttgart, Bonn, and Berlin.
From 2001 to 2003, he set up

Arabia. In 2004 he returned
living in Lebanon and start up
the “Arab Images Foundation”. Photography was still
prohibited by fatwa in Saudi
Arabia when he created the

published in 2005. The same
year, he elaborated the project
“Mes Ententes” on the return
of displaced families to Mount
Lebanon. In 2007, he started
“Menassat”, a website focusing on news, trends and events
in the media in the MENA
region. In 2009, he exhibited at

in Lebanon at the French Book
Fair of Beirut and the exhibition was started at the French
Institute of Lebanon last fall
2012. His latest exhibition,
“Accomplished Visions: the
Arabs” has been presented
during springtime 2013 at the
submarine base in Bordeaux
in the cycle “Photographers
for the History” and the same
show has moved on to les
“Rencontres d’Arles in Black”
during summer.
Beirut-born Roger Moukarzel’s passion for photography began at the age of
15, in his war-torn homeland. Eventually working
as a photojournalist for the
likes of Sygma & Reuters
during the times of conflict
allowed him to explore the
obscure depths of war,
and how life was sustained
throughout. Moukarzel’s
war photo-documentaries
were published worldwide by international
publications such as the illustrious Paris Match who
chose one of his pictures
to grace the cover of its
40th anniversary book.
A quarter century of war
photojournalism later, a
shift in subject was imminent.
A shift from scenes of
death … to scenes of life
A shift from the harsh face
of war … to that of beauty
A shift from shooting the
infamous … to the famous
This shift is most apparent in his personal work,
which has been showcased
in over 15 exhibitions
worldwide; as well as his
two books, which offer a
three-dimensional insight
into the different dimensions of history, culture,
humanity and it’s natural
environment.

VERSCHAERE
Jean-Marc Nahas (born in
1963) lives and works in
Beirut. After graduating from
the Beaux Arts in Paris and
spending 5 years creating in
Montreal, he returned to settle
down in Lebanon.
With a few instinctive strokes
over canvas or paper mounted
on canvas, half-way between
painting and caricature, he
depicts the human being in all
its diversity.
The work of art he realises
during live performances,
have the chaotic beauty of the
first draft he loves so dearly.
Often in black and white, the
characters, which are not so
naive after all, drag us into
questioning the different
facets of human nature.

Fabien Verschaere is
an artist born in 1975 in
Vincennes. He now lives and
works in Paris.
Having graduated from the
«Ecole Nationale Supérieure
des Beaux-Arts de Paris»
in 2000, Fabien Verschaere
is represented by the RX
gallery in Paris.
After receiving the Dena
Foundation Prize in 2000, his
work has been exposed in
France and abroad, notably
at the Palais de Tokyo during
three major events one of
which was the collective
exhibition entitled « Notre
histoire » in 2006. In 2009,
Verschaere took part in
two important Parisian
collective exhibitions «La
force de l’Art 02» at the
Grand Palais and « Vraoum
» at La Maison Rouge. In
2010, he was present at
the collective exhibition
Fantasmagoria, the Mythical
World, at the Abattoirs
museum in Toulouse, and
at the RX gallery in 2011 for
a personal exhibition. Last
October, a creation in situ,
ordered by the RMN-Grand
Palais, was inaugurated at
the Grand Palais. In 2013,
he presented a personal
exhibition at the RX gallery
in Paris.
Fabien Verschaere has a
singular style in which we
can delve into a teeming
universe that is entertaining,
strange and mysterious
at once. His installations,
paintings and sculptures
echo medieval imagery,
popular culture, comic strips
and the world of childhood
and psychoanalysis.
Over the years, Verschaere
has developed a personal
mythology and a dreamy
world by revisiting the
childhood images through
humour and derision.
Verschaere is a prolific artist
who answers his insatiable
creative needs using styles
that are dear to his heart
and as varied as watercolor, drawings, paintings,
ceramics, installations
and animation movies.
« Within the walls, multiculturality is sublime;
experiences collide, Beirut
and Lebanon, Land of
culture and festivities
where fiction joins reality,
mythology and street art »,
said Fabien Verschaere.

BLC DESIGN
PLATFORM
For the 4th edition of BEIRUT ART FAIR, the
BLC Bank has invested itself in the creation
of a platform dedicated to design. Thus, the
bank is committed to the development and
support of young Lebanese art designers.
This initiative entitled “BLC DESIGN PLATFORM” presents the works of 10 designers:
Joe Bou Abboud, Niloufar Afnan, Claudia
Elissar Chahine, Maria Halios, Deema Kotob, Nayef Francis, Anastasia Nysten, Nabil
Rizk, Fady Salameh and Sibylle Tamer.
For this first edition, Jérôme Sans,
independent curator and art critic, was
invited to visit this course and to share his
4 favourites: Nayef Francis, Maria Halios,
Deema Kotob, Anastasia Nysten.
The aim of this initiative is to support the
new generation of designers that belong to
the future of the Lebanese creation.
118
119
The calling of design is to answer needs,
seek innovative solutions and think up new
possibilities, thus improving the well-being
of humankind. Ergo, its place beside art is
increasingly obvious. At the heart of the great
design profession lie functional, technical,
environmental, biological, social, economic,
political and philosophical considerations.
Through these concerns, designers develop
an object-aesthetic consequently crystallizing
current formal research. The contemporary
design scene has its icons and pioneers. As
catalyst of creative and industrial energies,
the recent progress of design enabled its
democratization and tightened its relationship
with art. Nowadays, design draws attention
from across the globe, gaining ground with
the growing urgency of functional and esthetic
solutions to life’s predicaments. In the era of
globalization, migration, exchange and the
renewal of territories, design’s novel scene
cannot but develop at a rapid pace. Inspired by
cultures near and far, this scene recognizes
the need to be part of a creative whole open to
encounters. To design is also to create meaning, in an intimate rapport with life and its
daily happenings. Its story henceforth comes
together with the grand Narrative.

Installation View
The installation,
garbagescape, is about
the transformation of our
landscapes due to human
behaviour and insensitivity
toward natural spaces.
Garbage collected from nature
that was thrown by individuals
is used as a medium and
contrasted with sound and
scents of nature its original
state. It brings to mind the
sad reality of humankind
destroying the beauty of his
own society through his acts.
With garbage, the artist
creates architectural
sculptures that criticize
human impact on the
environment on different
levels:
126
• Personal acts like throwing
garbage in nature.
• Architectural interventions
that don’t take into
consideration the need to
integrate natural contexts,
killing hundreds of trees and
plants each time.
• The reality of our urban
landscape is worse than the
garbage that covers it.

sounds of nature and pure
scents of Lebanese plants

of pure spaces. Through the
irony of this experience, the
artist expresses a conflict, a
sadness and rebellion against
his own reality.
In recent years, it has
became so hard to see a
Lebanese landscape without
being shocked by the
aggressiveness of human
intervention.

GRAFF ME # LEBANON
From the 14th to the 22nd of September
2013, European and Lebanese street artists and
graffiti writers will be invited to invest urban
public places.
Conferences, artistic public performances,
workshops and coffee debates will take place
jointly to support the wall art season.
GRAFF ME #LEBANON is a project financed by
the European Union and supported by the
French Cultural Institute of Lebanon.
The objective of this project is to favor the emergence of urban cultures and to strengthen the
presence of artists in public place because they
bear witness of the cultural and social changes in
our societies.
The heart of our artistic proposal is to create a
dialogue of expression through cultural diversities. Is it always necessary that the artist re-appropriates the city?
