Twelve Songs by Joseph von Eichendorff, Op. 39
Liederkreis: Zwölf Gedichte von Joseph von Eichendorff, Op. 39 Song Cycle: Twelve Poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, Op. 39 In der Fremde In a Foreign Land Aus der Heimat hinter den Blitzen rot Da kommen die Wolken her, Aber Vater und Mutter sind lange tot, Es kennt mich dort keiner mehr. From my home country, behind the red lightning, The clouds come here, But Father and Mother are long dead; No one there knows me anymore. How soon, how soon will come that quiet time, When I will also rest, and over me The wood's beautiful solitude will rustle, And no one will know me anymore here, either. Intermezzo Your image, wonderfully blessed, I have at the bottom of my heart; It looks so freshly and happily Upon me all the time. My heart sings quietly to itself An old, beautiful song That swings into the air And rushes on to you. Your image, wonderfully blessed, I have at the bottom of my heart; It looks so freshly and happily Upon me all the time. It is already late, it is already cold; Why are you riding alone through the forest? The forest is immense, you are alone, You beautiful bride! I will take you home. “Great is the treachery and the wiles of men; My heart is broken from grief. The hunting horn wanders here and there, O flee! You do not know who I am.” So richly bedecked are steed and woman, So wondrously beautiful the young body; Now I know you - God stand by me! You are Loreley the Witch. “You know me well - from the high cliff My castle looks deep down into the Rhine. It is already late, it is already cold; You will never emerge from these woods again.” No one will know or guess How good I feel, so good! Oh, if only one could know it, just the one, No one else should know it! The snow outside is not as silent, Nor as mute and discreet Are the stars on high As are my thoughts. I wish I were a little bird And could fly well over the sea, Well over the sea, and further, Until I were in heaven! No one will know or guess How good I feel, so good! Oh, if only one could know it, just the one, No one else should know it! It was as if the sky Had silently kissed the earth, So that in a shimmer of flowers She would have to dream only of him. The breeze went through the fields, The ears of wheat waved softly, The woods rustled quietly, So starry-clear was the night. And my soul spread Its wings far out, Flew over the silent lands, As if it were flying home. Schöne Fremde Beautiful Foreign Land Es rauschen die Wipfel und schauern, Als machten zu dieser Stund Um die halbversunkenen Mauern Die alten Götter die Rund. The treetops rustle and shudder, As if at this hour Around the half-sunken walls The old gods were making their rounds. Hier hinter den Myrtenbäumen In heimlich dämmernder Pracht, Was sprichst du wirr wie in Träumen Zu mir, phantastische Nacht? Here, behind the myrtle trees, In secretly dawning resplendence, What do you say so strangely, To me, as if in a dream, o fantastic night? The stars sparkle on me With a glowing gaze of love, And the distance drunkenly speaks As if of great future happiness. Asleep on the lookout Above is the old knight; Rain showers pass over, And the forest rustles through the grate. Grown into one are beard and hair, Petrified are breast and frill. He sits for many hundreds of years Above in his quiet cell. Outside, it is calm and peaceful, Everyone has gone into the valley, Only woodbirds sing In the empty window arches. A wedding is passing by there below On the Rhine, in the sunshine, Musicians are playing merrily, And the beautiful bride is crying. I hear the rills babble In the forest, here and there. In the forest, amid the rustling, I do not know where I am. The nightingales sing Here in the solitude, As if they wanted to tell something Of olden, beautiful times. The moonbeams fly, As if I saw below me A castle lying in the valley, And yet it is so far from here! It feels as if, in the garden Full of roses white and red, My beloved waits for me; But she died a long time ago. Sometimes I can sing As if I were happy, But secretly tears appear; Then, my heart becomes free. Es lassen Nachtigallen, Spielt draußen Frühlingsluft, Der Sehnsucht Lied erschallen Aus ihres Kerkers Gruft. The nightingales, When spring air plays outside, Let the songs of longing ring out From the crypts of their prisons. Then all the hearts listen, And everything is content, Yet no one feels the grief, In the song, a deep pain. Zwielicht Twilight Dämm’rung will die Flügel spreiten, Schaurig rühren sich die Bäume, Wolken ziehn wie schwere Träume Was will dieses Grau’n bedeuten? Dusk wants to spread its wings, The trees stir gruesomely, Clouds wander like heavy dreams What may this horror mean? Have you a doe preferred to the others, Do not let it graze alone; Hunters move in the woods, blowing their horns, Their voices wandering time and again. Have you a friend here on earth, Do not trust him at this hour; Friendly he seems in look and talk, But he plots war in treacherous peace. Was heut’ gehet müde unter, Hebt sich morgen neu geboren. Manches geht in Nacht verloren Hüte dich, sei wach und munter! What goes under wearily today, Will rise tomorrow, newly born. Much gets lost in the night Be on guard, alert and buoyant! A wedding party passed along the mountain, I heard the birds sing, Then many riders blazed past, the horns called, That was a merry hunt! Und eh’ ich’s gedacht, war alles verhallt, And ere I could think of it, everything had faded away, The night covered everything around, Only from the mountains the forest still rustles, Die Nacht bedecket die Runde, Nur von den Bergen noch rauschet der Wald, Und mich schauert’s im Herzensgrunde. And, in the bottom of my heart, I shudder. Over the garden and through the air I heard migrating birds pass; This means spring is in the air, Below, blooming has already begun. I’d like to exult, I’d like to cry, I feel as if this could not be happening! All the marvels shine again, Brought in by the moon’s radiance. Und der Mond, die Sterne sagen’s, And the moon, the stars are saying it, Und im Traume rauscht’s der Hain, Und die Nachtigallen schlagen’s: Sie ist deine! Sie ist dein! And dreamily the grove is rustling it, And the nightingales are singing it: She is yours! She is yours!
