anspruchsvoll – über die bekannten Alpenstraßen: die 40 Kilometer lange Zillertaler
Höhenstraße entlang, über den Gerlospass
nach Salzburg oder durch die Seitentäler des
Zillertals hinauf zu den Stauseen. Serpentinen, steile Anstiege, rasante Abfahrten
– die Bedingungen hier sind ideal. Und das
belohnende Glücksgefühl, wenn du dein Ziel
erreicht hast und stolz den fantastischen
Ausblick auf die umliegenden 3000er mit den
weißen Gletscherfeldern genießt, ist unbeschreiblich. Probier’s mal aus – es lohnt sich!

ambitious, choose one of the famous alpine
roads and travel along the 40km Zillertaler
Höhenstraße (High Road), across the Gerlos
Pass to Salzburg, or through the side valleys
of Zillertal and up to the reservoir. With
serpentine roads, steep ascents and rapid
descents, cycling conditions are ideal. And
the feeling of joy is indescribable when
you finally reach your goal and can proudly
enjoy the fantastic view of the surrounding
3,000m-high mountains and their glaciers.

Auf dem familienfreundlichen Zillertal
Radweg kannst du das Tal ganz gemütlich
erkunden. Der breite und gut ausgebaute,
fast 31 Kilometer lange Weg führt von Strass
nach Mayrhofen. Hier sind kaum Höhenmeter zu absolvieren. An der Strecke gibt’s
tolle Spielplätze, Freischwimmbäder und
Erlebnisparks. Und falls die Kinder mal die
Lust am Radeln verlieren, ist es jederzeit
möglich, an einer der Haltestellen entlang
des Radwegs in die Zillertalbahn einzusteigen und die restliche Strecke mit dem Zug
zurücklegen. So geht Genuss-Radeln!

broad and well-maintained Zillertal Cycle
Trail, which is almost 31km in length, takes
you from Strass to Mayrhofen with almost
no uphill pedalling. En route, there are great
playgrounds, outdoor swimming pools and
adventure parks, and if the children get tired
of cycling, you can always stop at one of the
stations along the way and complete the
rest of the tour by train. Now that‘s an
enjoyable biking trip!

an der Bergstation der Spieljochbahn.

Holzstämme bis zum Klettergerüst. Ein
tolles Ausflugsziel für Jung und Alt ist
auch der neu gestaltete Barfußweg, auf
dem du direkt neben dem Wanderweg
zum Gipfelkreuz gelangst – ohne Schuhe,
natürlich. Den Boden spüren, Holz und
Pflanzen e
rtasten – so wird die Wanderung
zu einem unvergesslichen Naturerlebnis.

park, situated next to the mountain
station of the Spieljoch cable car, offers
lots of fun adventures for children, such
as crossing the pond on a raft, walking on
hollowed-out tree trunks and scaling the
climbing frame. Another great destination
for both young and old is the newly
created barefoot path next to the hiking
trail, which leads you to the summit
– minus your shoes, of course. Feel
the ground, the wood and the plants
beneath your feet, making your hike
an unforgettable outdoor experience.

Das „sagenumwobene“ Fichten
schloss mit seinen fleißigen
Fichtenwichteln auf der Rosenalm
ist eine Attraktion für die ganze
Familie. Unterhalb der Bergstation
der Rosenalmbahn stehen vier Türme
(Aussichtsturm, Rutschenturm,
Kletterturm und Kranturm), die Spiel
spaß garantieren. Abgerundet und
eingebettet ist die Turmanlage, deren
Silhouette an Gotikschlösser erinnert,
in ein kunterbuntes Abenteuerareal
mit großem Sandspielplatz, Wasser
spielanlagen und Relaxinsel.

Rosenalm’s legendary spruce
tree castle, with its busy gnomes,
provides adventure for the whole
family. Below the mountain station
of the Rosenalm cable car, you’ll
find four towers – the observation
tower, slide tower, climbing tower
and crane tower – that are a lot
of fun. In addition to the towers,
whose silhouette is reminiscent of
a Gothic castle, there’s a colourful
adventure area that includes a large
sand pit, water play areas and
a relaxing island.

Kinderklettersteig
Die Hände zu klein, die Füße meist auch – das sind oft
nicht zu meisternde Herausforderungen für Kinder auf
Klettersteigen. In Tirols erstem maßgeschneiderten Kinderklettersteig „Zimmereben“ am Mayrhofner Sonnenhang
gibt es diese Probleme nicht. Seil, Tritte, Schwierigkeitsgrad – alles ist auf Kids abgestimmt. Gleich beim Einstieg
gibt es ein Übungsgebiet, damit die kleinen Kraxler
trittsicher werden und Vertrauen in die Kletterausrüstung
bekommen. Mit leicht verständlichen Zeichnungen werden
die Regeln des Kletterns kindgerecht erklärt. Parallel
zum Kinderklettersteig führt ein Hochseilgarten. Damit
die Spannung erhalten bleibt, besteht in jedem Abschnitt
die Möglichkeit, vom Klettersteig zum Hochseilgarten

Via ferrata for children
Their hands are too small, and so are their feet: this is
the challenge often faced by children using fixed-rope
routes. But it’s not an issue at Zimmereben, Tyrol’s
first via ferrata made especially for children, located
on a sunny Mayrhofen hillside. Ropes, steps, difficulty
level – everything at Zimmereben was created with kids
in mind. At the entrance, there’s a training area where
the little climbers can become sure-footed and learn
to trust their safety gear, with easily understandable
drawings to explain the rules. Also, next to the children‘s
via ferrata, there’s a high rope course – and, to ensure
the excitement never stops, climbers are given the
option to switch between the via ferrata and the high

Ein ganzes Tal, seine Menschen und seine Kultur kennenlernen: Am 11.
und 12. Juni 2016 startet das gesamte Zillertal mit einem erlebnisreichen
Event in den Bergsommer und bietet Urlaubern ein abwechslungsreiches
Wochenende lang die Möglichkeit, die für das Zillertal typische Vielfalt
zu erleben. Zahlreiche Betriebe laden (gegen Vorlage einer für den
Zeitraum 11. und 12. 6. 2016 gültigen Gästekarte der Zillertaler Tourismusverbände) zu einem kostenlosen Besuch ein. Kleiner Tipp: Am besten

about the valley, its people and its culture. The entertaining and
action-packed Open Valley Days weekend gives tourists a chance

Vom 1. bis 3. Juli 2016 trifft sich die internationale MountainbikeSzene wieder im Zillertal. Vom Youngster bis zum alten Hasen,
vom Hobbyfahrer bis zum Profi – für sie alle wird das Tal drei Tage
lang zum Mountainbike-Mekka. Die drei Rennkategorien und vor
allem das Ziel am Hintertuxer Gletscher im ewigen Eis machen
das Rennen zum unvergesslichen Erlebnis in einer wundervollen
Bergwelt.

Hintertux Glacier. On July 1-3, 2016, the international mountainbike scene returns to Zillertal. For all riders, from youngsters to

Das ist wirklich ein Erlebnis: Auf dem Schau-Bauernhof der Erlebnis-Sennerei Mayrhofen kannst du regionale Nutztiere in artgerechtem Umfeld
beobachten – und damit die ersten Schritte der Entstehung hochwertiger
Lebensmittel miterleben: Wo kommt die Heumilch von Ziege, Schaf und
Kuh her? Was geschieht im Bio-Hühnerstall? Und wie entsteht eigentlich
Honig? Bei all diesen Fragen geht es um das Bewusstsein, woher unser
Essen kommt und wie wir damit umgehen. Natürlich soll auch der Spaß

you can observe local animals in a humane environment and witness
the first stages of high-quality farm-food production. How is the haymilk
from goats, sheep and cows produced? What happens in a bio hen-house?

awareness of where food comes from and how the process is managed.

s ist eine faszinierend wilde,
oft ungezähmte Landschaft. Von
Gletschern ausgeschürfte Täler,
dichte Wälder und duftende Almwiesen, dazwischen immer wieder schäumende Wasserfälle, die sich in die Tiefe
stürzen. Der Hochgebirgs-Naturpark Zillertaler Alpen ist ein Paradies auf rund
380 Quadratkilometern, das 2016 sein
15-jähriges Jubiläum feiert. In jahrhundertealter Tradition wird diese
Kulturlandschaft bewirtschaftet, erhalten und gepflegt: meist mit der
Hand und im Einklang von Natur und
Mensch. Einer, der sich hier auskennt
wie nur wenige andere, ist Alfred Kröll.
Der 65-Jährige ist ehemaliger Lehrer, ein
– das kann man getrost so sagen – wunderbarer Geschichtenerzähler und dort zu
Hause, wo das Herz des Naturparks schlägt:
im Bergsteigerdorf Ginzling.
Schon die Anreise in das 400-Seelen-Dorf
ist eindrucksvoll. Hat man – von Mayrhofen
kommend – die enge Zemmschlucht passiert, weitet sich das Tal ein wenig, und der
Blick richtet sich nach oben: imposante Felswände, links die Hänge des Tristners, rechts
die Ausläufer des Tuxer Hauptkamms. „Das
ist ein Traum hier“, sagt Kröll zur Begrüßung;
sein Händedruck ist warm und kräftig.

Eins werden mit der Natur
At one with nature
Ginzling ist so etwas wie die Wiege des
Alpintourismus im Zillertal. „Schon vor über
150 Jahren“, sagt Kröll, „sind die Pioniere
des Bergsteigens gekommen.“ Mutige Burschen wie die Brüder Zsigmondy und ihre
Erzählungen über die Schönheit der Landschaft und die erlebten Abenteuer seien es
gewesen, die „Urlauber mit Seil und Pickel
angelockt“ hätten. Anders als heute sei
damals allerdings kaum jemand allein die
Berge hinaufgekraxelt. „Zur besten Zeit hat
es 20 Bergführer im Ort gegeben, darunter
Steinsammler oder Bauern, die sich auskannten da oben.“ Die Schönheit der Berge
und die Folgen: Aus der kleinen Siedlung auf
1.000 Meter Höhe wurde mehr und mehr ein
lebendiges Dorf. Und zum neuen Zentrum
für sanften, naturverbundenen Alpintourismus. Ob von Ginzling aus oder von anderen
Ortschaften: Es gibt unzählige Möglich ➸
Ginzling could rightfully lay claim to being
the cradle of alpine tourism in Zillertal.
“More than 150 years ago, the pioneers
of mountaineering came here,” explains
Kröll. Relating their tales of adventure and
the beauty of the landscape, courageous
explorers such as the Zsigmondy brothers
“attracted tourists with ropes and pickaxes”.
Back then, unlike today, no one would
dare to climb the mountains by his or
herself. “During its peak, the village had
20 mountain guides, some of them stone
pickers or farmers who knew their way
around up there.” As the beauty of the
mountains drew more visitors, this small
settlement at an altitude of 1,000m slowly
became a lively village – and a new centre
for alpine tourism that is sensitive to, and
in tune with, nature. Whether you start
your journey from Ginzling or one of ➸
he landscape is wild, fascinating
and, in places, untamed: valleys
are carved out by glaciers,
forests are dense and mountain
meadows fragrant, foaming waterfalls
plunge into the depths. The Zillertal Alps
High Mountain Nature Park, which celebrates
its 15th anniversary in 2016, is 380km² of
paradise. The landscape and culture of
the nature park is managed, maintained
and cultivated according to a tradition
many centuries old – mostly by hand and
always in harmony with nature. Alfred
Kröll, a 65-year-old former teacher, is one
of the few people who know their way
around this place. A wonderful storyteller,
Kröll has his home right in the heart of the
nature park, in the alpine village of Ginzling.
Even the journey to the village
(population: 400) is spectacular. Travelling
here from Mayrhofen, you pass through
the Zemmschlucht canyon where the valley
suddenly widens and your gaze drifts
upwards to impressive rock faces. To the left
are the slopes of Tristner; to the right, the
foothills of the main crest of the Tux Alps.
“This place is a dream,” says Kröll by way of
a greeting, his handshake warm and firm.

in sieben Tagesetappen sogar der gesamte
Park erkunden.“ Was am Berliner Höhenweg
nur mit einem Bergführer möglich ist, geht
in weiten Teilen des Naturparks mit einem
Ranger: die Erkundung der Besonderheiten
und Geheimnisse des Gebiets.

“If you walk along the famous Berlin High
Trail, which will take you past many of the
park’s 80 or so glaciers,” says Kröll, “you can
explore the entire area in just seven days.”
Discovering the peculiarities and secrets of
the region on the Berlin High Trail is only
possible with the assistance of a mountain
guide, although the company of a ranger is
sufficient in many areas of the nature park.

Forest Office. Egger is district manager of
an area measuring 34,000 hectares, and
can be found here almost every day, often
alone but for his thoughts and his loyal
canine companion, Baldur the gun dog.
As well as managing natural resources,
wildlife and hunting, and maintaining the
forest roads, Christoph and his team are
responsible for safeguarding the nature
park’s renewable raw material, wood. Due
to an altitude that varies between 1,000m
and more than 3,000m, duties in the ➸

Bäume sind von Schädlingen befallen? Und
welche müssen gefällt werden? Pflege, Fällung und Aufforstung des Baumbestands hat
der Revierleiter stets im Auge.
Altes Wissen, das hilft
Absolut naturbelassen arbeiten auch die
Bergbauern beim Bewirtschaften einer insgesamt 80 Quadratkilometer großen Fläche.
Altes Wissen und bäuerliche Tradition werden hier noch immer gelebt. „Und geliebt,
auch wenn die Arbeit hart ist“ – da ist sich
Helmut Kröll sicher. Ob beim Schwenden
von Sträuchern, Ausbessern von traditionellen Trockensteinmauern oder Mähen der
Bergmähder – so werden Wiesenflächen an
Hochgebirgshängen bezeichnet –, die Bauern
arbeiten hier noch wie vor einhundert Jahren: ohne technische Hilfsmittel in schweißtreibender Handarbeit. Trotzdem haben ➸

The mountain farmers cultivate an area of

slash-and-burn farming, repairing traditional
dry stone walls or mowing the ‘Bergmähder’
– the name given to meadows that lie on
high mountain slopes – the farmers here
work the same way they did 100 years ago,
which means no modern tools and lots ➸

die sich nur von Almgras, Kräutern und Blumen ernähren“, so Helmut Kröll. Was aus
dieser Milch entsteht – zum Beispiel köstlicher Zillertaler Heumilch- oder Graukäse –,
kommt anschließend in Schutzhütten und
Gasthäusern auf den Tisch. Natürlich gehört
auch das Aufstellen von Weidezäunen, das
Ausbessern von Wegen oder die Beseitigung
von Flurschäden zum Tagesablauf der Almbauern. Wegen des hohen Arbeitsaufwands
für solche Dinge sind zusätzliche Helfer eine
wertvolle Unterstützung.

Kröll and hundreds of other mountain
farmers have decided not to ferment their
animal feed, sticking instead to a form of
cultivation that is more in harmony with
nature. “The resulting milk comes from cows
eating nothing but grass from the mountain
pastures, along with herbs and flowers,”
says Kröll. Products made from this milk,
such as Zillertal‘s delicious hay milk and
grey cheese, are served in mountain huts
and restaurants. Naturally, building pasture
fences, repairing roads and handling crop
damage are also part of the daily lives of
the mountain farmers. Due to the huge
amount of work involved, the assistance of
additional workers is invaluable.

some of their time on environmental projects

Working joyfully: volunteers remove shrubs and pile rocks to build traditional dry stone walls. Every job helps to maintain this idyllic landscape.
Zillertaler Alpen. Lediglich gegen Kost und
Logis sowie unter fachkundiger Anleitung
säubern sie in Grüppchen Almen von Buschwerk oder pflanzen in Bergwaldprojekten
junge Bäumchen. Eine wertvolle Hilfe, um
das seit mittlerweile 25 Jahren bestehende Ruhegebiet – eine wirklich einzigartige
Hochgebirgs- und Kulturlandschaft, die den
Bestimmungen des Tiroler Naturschutz
gesetzes unterliegt – in seiner ursprünglichen Form instandzuhalten. Für ihren Einsatz
bekommen die Freiwilligen Arbeitsgerät gestellt, eine einfache Unterkunft und Essen.
Und noch etwas anderes ist ihnen sicher:
die Gewissheit, etwas wirklich Sinnvolles
für den Erhalt dieser einzigartigen Umwelt
getan zu haben.
Mit großem Herzen
Zum Teil intensive Pflege benötigen auch
die 15 Schutzhütten, die es verteilt über den
Naturpark gibt. Einige stammen noch aus
der Zeit, als die Alpen vor zirka 150 Jahren
wirtschaftlich erschlossen wurden. „Sie ha-

Intensive care is also needed at the 15
mountain huts spread across the nature
park. Many of these date back to a time,
about 150 years ago, when the Alps first
became economically viable. “The huts have
been here for many years,” says innkeeper
Manuel Daum, standing in front of the

Manuel Daum, Hüttenwirt vor der atem
beraubenden Kulisse des Schlegeisgrundes,
und lächelt. „Da gibt’s eine Menge Arbeit,
diese Hütten in Schuss zu halten.“ Einmal ein
undichtes Dach, dann ein verstopfter Bach –
irgendwo ist immer etwas zu tun. Doch das
stört den stillen Mann mit dem großen Her
zen nicht, die Arbeit ist für ihn Herausforde
rung und Kraftquelle zugleich.
Die Natur gibt dir alles zurück
Schließlich – und darauf ist Daum stolz – gebe
es die Tradition, Wanderern und Bergsteigern
einen sicheren und gemütlichen Platz anzu
bieten, „schon seit ewiger Zeit“. Das Wissen
um einen Unterschlupf, gepaart mit Gast
freundlichkeit – so können Naturfreunde die
ses wundervoll ursprüngliche Fleckchen Erde
„noch viel besser erkunden“, sagt Daum.
„Und wir Schutzhüttenwirte sorgen dafür,
dass das so bleibt.“ Dafür arbeiten sie hart –
doch es lohnt sich allemal. „Hier oben“, sagt
Daum, „ist das Leben nicht einfach. Aber die
Natur gibt dir alles hundertfach zurück.“ H

a clogged stream, there‘s always something
that needs to be done. But that does not
bother this calm man with a big heart,
because for Daum, the work is both
a challenge and a source of strength.
Nature gives it all back to you
As Daum will proudly explain, there’s
a tradition here of offering hikers and
mountain climbers safety and comfort. “It
has been this way for many years,” he says.
Safe in the knowledge that in Zillertal they
will always find hospitality and a great place
to rest, visitors can explore this beautiful
destination with complete peace of mind,
says Daum. “And we, the innkeepers, will
ensure that it stays that way.” A lot of hard
work is involved in achieving this – but, as
Daum explains, it’s totally worthwhile. “Up
here,” he says, “life is not easy. But nature

The Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park is a jewel, a truly

people who call the nature park home. One man who has
experienced its magic is CEWE competition winner Stephan Kelle,
who documented his travels with some wonderful photography.

Hundsbichler am Küchentisch und
malte. Es waren Berge, immer
wieder Berge. „Sie haben mich
schon immer fasziniert“, sagt die Wirtin der
malerisch gelegenen Grünalm – eine Liebe,
die sie nie wieder losgelassen hat. Seit nunmehr 36 Jahren bewirtet sie jeden Sommer
gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann die Jausenstation auf 1.800 Metern, eingebettet in saftig
grüne Wiesen und direkt an der Zillertaler
Höhenstraße gelegen. Hier ist Gerti glücklich, „einen schöneren Platz auf der Welt
gibt’s nicht“, sagt sie.
Blumenkästen vor den Fenstern, mit
heimischen Blüten bemalte Läden und ein
Holzbrunnen mit quellfrischem Wasser. Auf
der Terrasse sitzen Gäste, manche plaudern,
während einige andere musizieren. Jemand
spielt Klarinette, ein anderer Ziehharmonika. Es wird gespielt und gesungen, dann
kommt Gerti und stellt Schnaps mit ein paar
Gläsern auf den Tisch. Der feine Edelbrand
stammt aus der eigenen Brennerei der Familie Hundsbichler, wo neben Enzian vor
allem Meisterwurz verarbeitet wird. Deren
Wurzeln, die als uraltes Heilmittel gelten,
werden von Gerti eigenhändig aus- ➸

nothing but mountains. “They
have always fascinated me,” explains
the innkeeper of the beautifully situated
Grünalm hut. It’s a love she has never lost.
Every summer for the past 36 years, she
and her husband have entertained guests
at the inn, which lies right next to the
Zillertaller Höhenstraße mountain road,
embedded in lush meadows at an altitude
of 1,800m. Up here, Gerti is happy because,
for her, “there is no place more beautiful
in the entire world”.
Flower boxes sit on windowsills,
shutters are painted with local flora, and a
wooden well provides fresh spring water.
Guests sit on the terrace, some talking,
others making music. Someone is playing
the clarinet, another person the accordion.
Amid the playing and singing, Gerti comes
over and places schnapps and some glasses
on the table. This fine alcoholic drink is
made in the Hundsbichlers‘ own distillery,
where mainly gentian and masterwort are
processed. Their roots, known as ancient
remedies, are foraged by Gerti herself. ➸

gegraben, „oben in den Bergen auf kahlen
Weiden“, sagt sie und lächelt. Dann übernimmt ihr Mann Peter. „Aus Äpfeln und Birnen aus unserem Garten wird die Maische
hergestellt“, erklärt er. „Die wird vergärt und
doppelt gebrannt, anschließend kommt die
Meisterwurz dazu.“ So ein Schnaps, da ist
sich nicht nur Peter sicher, „hilft ganz wunderbar nach einem üppigen Essen“. Und Gerti
ergänzt: „Auch die eine oder andere Süßspeise verträgt einen kleinen Spritzer.“
Die Schnapsproduktion, aber auch die
Bewirtung der 80 Jahre alten Grünalm, dazu
25 Kühe – all das macht schon „eine Menge
Arbeit“. Jeden Morgen ist Gerti um 6 Uhr in
der Früh auf den Beinen, „schrubben, alles
vorbereiten für die Gäste“. Nur wenn das
Wetter einmal schlecht ist, wird’s ruhiger für
die sympathische Wirtin. Dann sitzt sie in der
urigen Stube vor dem gusseisernen Ofen,
liest ein gutes Buch oder strickt. Gibt’s denn
hier oben auch einen Fernseher? „Nein“, sagt
Gerti und zeigt mit einer ausladenden Geste
auf die Bergkämme des Hinteren Zillertals.
„Das ist unser Fernseher, ein besseres Programm gibt es nicht.“

“Up there on the mountains, on bare
pastures,” she says, smiling. Her husband,
Peter, continues. “The mash is made from
apples and pears from our own garden,”
he explains. “It is fermented and distilled
twice before we add the masterwort.” Peter
says that schnapps “feels wonderful after
a hearty meal”, and he’s not the only one
who feels that way. “Even some desserts
can use a few drops,” adds Gerti.
Producing schnapps while also taking
care of the guests at the 80-year-old Grünalm
hut and tending to 25 cows is “a lot of work”,
says Gerti. She gets up at 6 o‘clock every
morning, “scrubbing and getting everything
ready for the guests”. Only on the rare
occasion that the weather turns bad do things
quieten down for the charming innkeeper.
On these days, she sits in front of the castiron stove in the rustic parlour and spends
the day reading a good book or knitting.
Is there even a television up here? “No,”
says Gerti, gesturing towards the mountain
ridges of the Zillertal valley. “This is our
television. There is no better television
programme than this.”

und – ein Stückchen weiter hinten beim leise vor sich hin plätschernden Bach – auch ein paar Beeren.
Friedlich ist’s hier oben, ein Stück heile,
unbeschwerte Welt, eingebettet in Tradition
und Ursprünglichkeit. „Stimmt schon“, sagt
Maria Baumann, die Wirtin vom Goglhof am
Fügenberg, „es ist schon ein kleines Refugium bei uns. Für Gäste und für uns selbst.“
Während die Kinder mit roten Bäckchen
spielen, meist unter ortskundiger Anleitung von Johanna, der kleinen Tochter der
Wirtsleute, freuen sich die Gäste auf der
Terrasse auf das, was jetzt auf die Teller
kommt: Wild in allen Variationen, zubereitet
nach den raffiniertesten Rezepten. Saftiges
Hirschsteak schmeichelt dem Gaumen, feines Filet vom Reh, herzhafter Hirschspeck,
Kaminwurzn oder Hirschknödel locken. Zubereitet hat all die Köstlichkeiten der Chef
selbst. Konrad Baumann ist gelernter Koch,
für den das Verwöhnen seiner Gäste „die
wunderbarste Aufgabe überhaupt“ ist. In
seine Töpfe kommt nur das Beste: Qualitätsprodukte, regional und frisch – von denen
einige quasi hinter dem Haus stehen. Rund
30 Stück Damwild verteilen sich auf Wiesen

– even a few berries. It’s peaceful
up here in this idyllic, carefree corner of the
world, steeped in tradition and local character.
“It’s true,” says Maria Baumann, innkeeper
at the Goglhof hut in Fügenberg. “Here, we
have our own little hideaway – for guests
and for ourselves.”
While the rosy-cheeked children play
under the guidance of the innkeepers’
young daughter, Johanna, who knows her
way around the place, the guests on the
terrace look forward to the various venison
dishes they are about to be served, prepared
according to the most ingenious recipes.
Juicy venison steak tickles the taste buds, as
do fine venison fillet, hearty venison bacon,
smoked sausages and venison dumplings.
The boss himself has prepared all these
delicacies. Konrad Baumann is a trained
chef, for whom it is “the most wonderful job
in the world” to spoil his guests. Only the
best ingredients find their way into his pots:
quality products, regional and fresh – some
of which come from his own backyard.

Doch nicht nur das Wild wird hier umsorgt
– auch andere Vierbeiner auf dem Goglhof
brauchen Aufmerksamkeit und die eine oder
andere Streicheleinheit: Ziegen und Schafe
gibt es, Hochlandrinder, Hasen, Hühner und
Gipsy, das Pony. Ein fröhliches Meckern, Muhen und Mähen, das Kindern ein Strahlen ins
Gesicht zaubert und manch Mami und Papi
vielleicht zurückversetzt in eine Zeit, als sie
selbst noch jung waren.
Ob bei den Tieren, der Rodelbahn, die
Winter wie Sommer (dann mit dreirädrigen,
geländegängigen Alpine Trikes über Forstwege) betrieben wird, oder der Bewirtung –
auf dem Goglhof hilft die ganze Wirtsfamilie
zusammen. Und das spürst du als Gast: Der
Alltag verschwindet, der Stress ebenfalls,
und himmlische Ruhe kehrt ein. Du bist daheim bei Freunden.

It’s not only deer that are cared for at Goglhof
– other animals in need of stroking and
attention include goats and sheep, Highland
cattle, rabbits, chickens, and Gipsy the pony.
Children‘s faces light up when they hear the
animals’ happy bleating and mooing, and
mums and dads are transported back to
their own childhood.
Whether they’re taking care of the
animals, managing the toboggan run that’s
open all year round (during summer, instead
of a sled, guests can drive down forest
roads on cross-country tricycles known as
alpine trikes) or running the restaurant, at
Goglhof the whole family works together.
Guests can feel it, too, as all the usual
stresses of their daily routine disappear,
and nothing is left but heavenly calm. It’s a
homely experience, as if you were visiting
a house belonging to your friends.

as Erste, was du hörst, ist das
Rauschen des Bodenbachs,
der von der Bodenalm seinen
Weg ins 25 Kilometer lange
Tal des Zillergrunds findet. Und dann ist da
noch ein zweites Geräusch, gleichbleibend
und beruhigend, das einsickert in deinen
Gehörgang, sich dort ausbreitet, wirkt … Es
ist das friedliche Summen und Brummen
von Bienen, die hier auf der Häusling Alm
gehalten werden.
14 Bienenstöcke – in jedem leben
ca. 20.000 Tiere – sind in einem alten hölzernen Bauwagen untergebracht, der hinter
einem kleinen Hügel in der Nähe des Alpengasthauses steht. „In guten Sommern“,
sagt Häusling-Wirt Johannes Rahm, „produzieren die Tiere 300 Kilo Honig.“ Vorwiegend den wertvollen, milden Alpenrosenhonig, der sanft auf der Zunge zergeht, aber
manchmal auch den etwas herberen Waldhonig. „Es sind feine Bienenvölker, die wir
haben“, ist sich Johannes Rahm sicher. Er
ist jeden Tag bei den Tieren – beim Füttern
mit Zuckerwasser oder beim Abschöpfen
des Honigs – und gestochen wird er „eigentlich nie“. Den Honig gibt es auf ➸
T
he first thing you hear is the
swooshing of the Bodenbach,
a stream that flows down the
mountain and into the 25km-long
Zillergrund valley. Then there is a second
noise, a steady and calming noise that
seeps into your ears, spreading and taking
hold… It’s the soothing buzzing of the bees
kept at the Häusling Alm hut.
Fourteen beehives – each of which
houses around 20,000 bees – can be found in
an old construction trailer that stands behind
a small hill close to the alpine restaurant.
“During a good summer,” says innkeeper
Johannes Rahm, “the bees produce 300kg
of honey.” Most often, this is the valuable,
mild alpine rose honey that melts in your
mouth, though sometimes the bees also
produce forest honey, which is a little
more tart. “The bee colonies we have are
great ones,” says Johannes, confidently.
He spends time with his bees every day,
feeding them with sugared water or
harvesting honey, but he “hardly ever” gets
stung. The honey can be bought at Häusling
Alm and is served at breakfast, spread on
traditionally baked coarse rye bread or ➸

Die stimmungsvolle Häusling Alm – das Haus
stammt aus dem Jahr 1847 – schätzen Aktivurlauber wie Ruhesuchende gleichermaßen. Da gibt es Bergsteiger, die das große
Tourenangebot nutzen, zum Speicherstausee wandern oder auf die Plauener Hütte.
Erfahrene Kletterer nehmen sich vielleicht
sogar den Grundschartner vor, einen der vielen Dreitausender im Zillertal. Andere wieder lassen es in der Stille der Häusling Alm
gemütlich angehen. „Viele Gäste bleiben

Simply dream a while
The atmospheric Häusling Alm – which was
built as long ago as 1847 – is appreciated
by action-loving tourists as well as by
those seeking peace and quiet. Hikers take
advantage of the great range of tours the
valley offers, setting off on routes to the
water reservoir or to the Plauener Hütte.
Experienced climbers may even head to
the Grundschartner mountain, one of the
many peaks in Zillertal that are more than
3,000m high. Others prefer to take it easy
in the peaceful atmosphere of Häusling
Alm. “Many guests decide to stay for a few
days and just relax,” explains Johannes.
They spend their time reading, letting
their minds wander, and dreaming a little
– all of which is so much easier when
reclining in a deckchair with a view of the
Maria Schnee chapel, which stands close
to the alpine inn.

Und während sie das sagt, leuchten ihre Augen. Die Wirtin der Stoankasern
lässt ihren Blick wandern über duftende
Bergwiesen, über das von der Morgensonne beschienene Tal, über das imposante
Felsmassiv, das sich hinter der Alm in den
Himmel schraubt: Kalkwand und Grübelspitze und auf der anderen Seite, etwas in der
Ferne, die imposante Ahornspitze. Vor diesem beeindruckenden Panorama schmiegt
sich die Stoankasern auf 1.984 Meter Höhe
sanft in die Gebirgslandschaft.
Auf der gemütlichen Terrasse sitzen Wanderer und Mountainbiker. Manche plaudern
fröhlich und ausgelassen, andere wieder
sind ganz still, genießen die Natur. Bis Silvia
Erler kommt und das Essen bringt. „Wer viel
an der frischen Bergluft unterwegs ist, hat
natürlich Hunger“, sagt sie. Eine Käse
jause
stellt die Wirtin jetzt auf den Tisch, darauf
eine üppige Portion würziger Bergkäse. Den
machen sie hier oben in Österreichs höchstgelegener Käserei natürlich selbst.
Zuständig dafür ist Silvias Mann Alfred.
Sein Arbeitstag beginnt, wenn alle anderen
noch schlafen: um vier Uhr in der Früh. In der

truly enjoy every single minute
up here, with all my heart.” Her
eyes sparkle with delight as she
says these words. The innkeeper of the
Stoankasern hut lets her eyes wander across
the fragrant meadows, the valley in the
morning sun, and the impressive mountain
mass – Kalkwand and Grüblspitze – that
seems to grow up into the sky; on the
other side, in the distance, is the imposing
Mount Ahornspitze. Against this amazing
panoramic backdrop sits Stoankasern,
embedded in the mountainous landscape at
an altitude of 1,984m.
Hikers and mountain bikers are seated
on the comfortable terrace. Some of them
chat, while others remain quiet, enjoying
the natural setting. Until Silvia Erler arrives
with the food, that is. “If you spend so much
time in the fresh mountain air, of course
you are hungry,” she says. The innkeeper
places a plate on the table, laden with tasty
mountain cheese. Naturally, the owners
make it themselves, up here in Austria‘s
highest-lying cheese dairy.

produces 500 wheels of tasty mountain cheese, each weighing about 30kg. The fresh milk comes from the cows grazing on nearby pastures.
Käserei gießt er Rohmilch in einen Bottich,
„dann erhitze ich sie auf 32 Grad“. Der Käsemeister gibt Lab zum Verdicken dazu, anschließend wird die Milch geschnitten, gepresst, für zwei Tage ins Salzbad und in den
Keller zum Reifen gelegt. „Nach drei Monaten“, sagt Alfred, sei der Käse langsam fertig. „Manchmal dauert es auch länger. Wir
machen das alles nach Gefühl hier.“

I heat it up until it reaches 32°C”. The master
cheese-maker adds rennet to thicken the
milk, which is then cut, pressed, placed into
a salt bath for two days and put in the cellar
to ripen. After three months, Alfred says, the
cheese is ready. “Sometimes it takes longer.
We work with our instincts here.”

wettbewerben schon eine Goldmedaille
bekommen hat, überrascht dabei nicht –
schließlich arbeitet Käsemeister Alfred mit
„altem überliefertem Wissen, Sorgfalt und
Liebe“.

giving milk during those months,“ Alfred
explains, smiling. “During the winter, they
are down in the valley. Then there’s no
milk here – and no cheese.” It comes as
no surprise that some of the tasty Zillertal
cheeses produced at Stoankasern have
won gold medals at international
competitions. After all, master cheese-maker
Alfred works “with ancient knowledge that
has been passed down through the ages,

Die besten Zillertaler Rezepte, um den Urlaub zu Hause nachzukochen.
GRÜNALM
Apfelstrudel mit Schuss
Apple strudel with a shot
Zutaten für 4 Personen:
1 kg Äpfel, 50 g gehackte Mandeln,
50 g Rosinen, Rum, 50 g Semmelbrösel,
1 Pkg. Vanillezucker, 75 g Butter,
etwas Zitronensaft, 100 g Zucker,
5 EL lauwarmes Wasser, 50 g Butter,
eine Prise Salz, 200 g Weizenmehl
Ingredients for 4 servings:
200g wheatflour; pinch of salt; 5tbsp
lukewarm water; splash of vinegar;
75g butter, melted; 50g breadcrumbs;
1kg apples, peeled and cut into sticks;
50g raisins; 100g sugar; 1tbsp vanilla
sugar; 50g chopped almonds; shot of
rum; juice of 1 lemon; 50g butter, melted
Zubereitung:
Mehl, Salz, Wasser, etwas Essig und zerlassenes Fett in eine Schüssel geben. Mit
Handrührgerät verkneten. Den Teig ca.
30 Min. ruhen lassen. Geschälte, in Stifte
geschnittene Äpfel untermischen. Den
Strudelteig auf bemehltem Küchentuch
ausrollen, zu einem Rechteck ausziehen.
Semmelbrösel, Apfelstifte, Rosinen, Zucker, Vanillezucker und Mandeln auf dem
Teig verteilen. Diesen mithilfe des Tuches
von der längeren Seite her aufrollen, an
den beiden Enden zusammendrücken und
im vorgeheizten Backofen bei 180 Grad
45 bis 55 Minuten backen.
Method:
Place the flour, salt, water, vinegar and
butter in a bowl. Knead the mixture into
a dough, then allow to rest for about
30 minutes. Roll out the dough on a tea
towel covered with flour, then stretch into
a rectangle. Cover it with the breadcrumbs,
apples, raisins, sugar, vanilla sugar,
almonds, rum and lemon juice. Roll up
the dough lengthways, using the tea
towel. Press together at both ends and
bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for
45-55 minutes. Brush with melted butter
while hot. Dust with icing sugar to serve.

Damwild-Ragout à la Konrad
Venison ragout à la Konrad
800 g Keule vom Damwild,
180 g frische Pfifferlinge,
50 g Zwiebeln, 60 g Butterschmalz,
1 ⁄ 8 l Rotwein, 1 ⁄ 8 l Suppe, 1 ⁄ 8 l Schlagsahne,
4 EL Sauerrahm, 1 KL Mehl (glatt),
2 EL Grantn (Preiselbeeren)
800g haunch of venison, cut into 3cm
cubes; mustard; salt; pepper; crushed
garlic; 50g onions, diced; 180g fresh
chanterelles; 125ml red wine; 125ml
broth; 125ml cream; 2tbsp cranberries;
4tbsp sour cream; 1tsp plain flour
Zubereitung:
Keule in Würfel (3 cm) schneiden, mit
Senf und Gewürzen (u. a. Salz, Pfeffer,
Knoblauch) durchmengen, ca. eine Stunde ziehen lassen. Fleisch anrösten, aus
der Pfanne nehmen. Zwiebeln anschwitzen, Pfifferlinge beigeben, kurz anrösten.
Beides aus der Pfanne heben, den Bratenrest mit Rotwein ablöschen, einreduzieren lassen, mit Suppe aufgießen. Einmal
aufkochen lassen, Sahne zugießen, sämig
kochen. Grantn einrühren. Fleisch, Pilze,
Zwiebeln in die Sauce geben, darin Fleisch
weich dünsten. Sauerrahm mit Mehl vermengen, unter das Ragout rühren und
nochmals zwei Minuten kochen lassen.

Method:
Mix the venison with the mustard, salt,
pepper and garlic. Allow to marinate for
one hour. Fry the meat in a pan over
a medium heat until browned, then
remove. Fry the onions and chanterelles
in the pan until softened, then remove.
Deglaze the pan with the wine, then
boil the liquid to reduce. Add the broth
and bring back to the boil. Pour in the
cream to thicken. Stir in the cranberries,
then add the meat, mushrooms and
onions. Bring to a simmer and cook
until the meat is tender. Mix the sour
cream with the flour, add it to the pan
and stir. Simmer for two more minutes.

2 Paprikaschoten (grün und rot),
1 kg Putenfleisch, 400 g Schlagsahne,
4 EL Senf, 4 EL Honig, 4 Zwiebeln, Dill
1kg turkey meat; salt; black pepper;
1 red pepper, chopped; 1 green pepper,
chopped; 4 onions, diced; 400ml cream,
whipped; 4tbsp mustard; 4tbsp honey; dill
Zubereitung:
Das Fleisch in kleine Würfel schneiden,
mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen und anschließend gut anbraten. Rote und grüne
Paprikaschoten sowie Zwiebeln klein
hacken (mit einem Küchenmixer) oder
möglichst klein schneiden. Die Sahne
zum Fleisch geben, dann Zwiebeln und
Paprika hinzufügen und unterrühren. Anschließend vorsichtig mit Senf, Honig und
Dill abschmecken. Im geschlossenen Topf
alles ca. 30 Minuten bei geringer Hitze
köcheln lassen. Hin und wieder umrühren
nicht vergessen. Schließlich nochmals
abschmecken – fertig.

Season with salt and black pepper, then
fry over a medium heat until browned.
Add the cream to the meat, then the
onions and peppers. Stir. Season to taste
with the mustard, honey and dill. Simmer
in a covered pot on a low heat for about
30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season
to taste again before serving.

6 trockene Semmeln, eine Prise Salz,
¼ l Milch, 2 bis 3 Eier, 40 g Butter, 1 Zwiebel, Petersilie, 200 g Junsberger Käse,
2 bis 3 EL Mehl
6 dry bread rolls, chopped into small
cubes; salt; 2-3 eggs; 250ml milk; 40g
butter; 1 onion, diced; chopped parsley;
200g Junsberg cheese, grated or diced;
2-3tbsp flour
Zubereitung:
Die Semmeln kleinwürfelig schneiden und
salzen, Eier dazugeben, dann mit Milch
übergießen, gut durchmischen und ziehen
lassen. In der Zwischenzeit die Butter heiß
werden lassen und die gehackte Zwiebel
darin anrösten. Anschließend Petersilie
und Semmeln dazugeben. Den Junsberger
Almkäse reiben oder klein würfeln und
hinzugeben. Die Masse wird jetzt mit Mehl
gebunden, dann nochmals ca. 10 Minuten
ziehen lassen. Jetzt mit nassen Händen die
Knödel formen, diese kochen und in die
Suppe geben.

Method:
Place the chopped rolls in a bowl. Add
the salt, eggs and milk. Mix thoroughly.
Leaving the mixture to rest, heat the
butter and lightly fry the diced onion.
Add the parsley and the roll mixture
to the onions, then stir in the grated
cheese. Add the flour to thicken, then
allow to rest for another 10 minutes.
Using wet hands, mould the mixture into
dumplings. Boil the dumplings for about
15 minutes. Serve with a clear soup.

bei Olympischen Spielen und Weltmeisterschaften. Nach ihrer Karriere entdeckten sie schließlich

an excellent dinner, possibly after a visit to one

the valley,“ says Stock, “you’ll think to yourself,

Then, as your gaze wanders across the
masses of people lining the road in Zell am
Ziller, you notice them: the many happy
faces and the sparkling eyes… Up to 30,000
visitors and around 3,000 contributors
celebrate the world-famous Gauder Fest
every year on the first weekend of May,
making it the biggest and most important
traditional costume and spring festival in
the Alpine region. Safeguarded by UNESCO’s
Intangible Cultural Heritage initiative, it’s
a festival filled with warmth and joviality,
and one that is deeply rooted in more than
600 years of tradition.
The origins of Gauder Fest can be found
in traditional parish fairs, which were once
held in every big Alpine village. Zell am
Ziller was the administrative and judicial
centre of the region, and when spring
began and the grazing animals were driven
up to the mountain pastures, farmers and
merchants from Salzburg, South Tyrol and
Tyrol would meet here to exchange or sell
their products and animals following ➸

Gauder Fest – damit ist es das größte und

im Alpenraum, das zum immateriellen Kulturerbe der UNESCO ernannt wurde. Ein Fest
voller Herzlichkeit und Fröhlichkeit, eines,

Immerhin versorgt Tirols älteste Privatbrauerei das Fest seit mehr als 500 Jahren mit
den stärksten Festbieren Österreichs. Der
Zillertal Gauder Bock genießt unter echten
Kennern Kultstatus. Dieses mit 7,8 Volumenprozent gebraute Bier wird im September
eingebraut, reift dann acht Monate und wird
rechtzeitig Anfang Mai ausgeschenkt. Einzigartig ist auch der Gauder Steinbock, eine
Bockbierspezialität gebraut nach einem Originalrezept aus den 1920er-Jahren. Der Brauerei verdankt das Gauder Fest übrigens auch
seinen Namen. Denn der Name „Gauder“
leitet sich nicht – wie einige vermuten – vom
Wort „Gaudi“ (hochdeutsch: Freude, Spaß)

among connoisseurs. Gauder Bock, which is
7.8 per cent alcohol by volume, is brewed
in September, then left to age for eight
months before being served in early May.
Another unique brew is Gauder Capricorn,
a special bock-style beer that is made to a
recipe dating back to the 1920s. The name
Gauder Fest has its roots in this brewery, and
is not – as many people believe – derived
from the word Gaudi (German for joy or fun).

Während der gesamten Festzeit findet
der Gauder Markt statt. Hier gibt es regio
nale Produkte, traditionelles Handwerk und
Wettkämpfe, deren Ursprünge zum Teil Jahrhunderte zurückreichen. Da wäre zum Beispiel das „Ranggeln“, ein Ringkampf, bei
dem die jungen Burschen nur in Hosen und
Hemden aus festem Leinen gegeneinander
antreten. Ziel ist es, den Gegner innerhalb
einer vorgegebenen Zeit auf die Schul- ➸

The children’s parade on Saturday, which
involves 700 youngsters in traditional
costume, is followed the next morning by a
field mass – and then the biggest and most
entertaining costume parade in the Alpine
region begins. More than 2.200 people take
part, along with teams of oxen and horses.
At the front of the parade is the historical
float that carries Gambrinus, the legendary
patron saint of brewers, who has been
revered for centuries.
Open throughout the festival, the Gauder
Market features local products, traditional
handicrafts and competitions, some of
which go back centuries. One such example
is Ranggeln, a wrestling match in which
young men compete against one another,
dressed in trousers and shirts made of linen.
The objective of the contest is to pin your
opponent to the ground within a specified

früher auch der Dreikampf, bestehend aus
Fingerhakeln, Handumlegen und Hufeisenwerfen – Disziplinen, die vor allem im alpenländischen Raum eine lange Tradition haben.
In der Zwischenzeit wurde der Dreikampf
auf dem Gauder Fest vom Sechskampf ab-

is an old office of free peasantry in charge

wrestling were held for pleasure on
Sundays, at parish fairs or on market
days. But back then there was another
reason for them: boys and men used
these competitions to define their status
in the village, displaying their strength
and skill through fighting games. After all,
in the pre-industrial Machine Age, these
abilities determined economic success
in agriculture and forestry. Another,
similar competition was the triathlon,
which consisted of finger wrestling, arm
wrestling and horseshoe throwing –
disciplines with a long tradition, particularly
in the Alpine region. Since then, the
triathlon has been replaced at Gauder

Julien Revelez aus dem belgischen Gent

zum ersten Mal im Leben eine Canyoning-Tour
mitgemacht – und war begeistert. Das Abseilen in
Schluchten, zum Teil durch einen Wasserfall, und die
Sprünge in Gumpen mit klarem Wasser haben ihm
am meisten Spaß gemacht. Abends war Julien dann
glücklich: „Das war wirklich ein Abenteuer für mich.
Eines, das ich jederzeit wiederholen würde.“

in his first-ever canyoning tour in Zillertal, equipped
with a helmet and a suit that protected him from
the cold. Julien was thrilled, and listed abseiling
down the ravines, passing through waterfalls
and jumping into pools of clear water as his
highlights. “It was a true adventure for me,” he
reflected happily later that evening. “One that
I would repeat any time.”

Zu einer echten Zillertaler Hochzeit

ur gelebte Tradition bleibt lebendig, sagen sie hier im Tal. Ganz
gilt vor allem das für das Schützen- und Musikkapellenwesen –
und das hat am 14. August seinen großen
Tag: Dann treffen sich in Ramsau alle Kompanien (Mitglieder) des Zillertaler Schützenregiments und der Zillertaler Blasmusikkapellen.
Insgesamt 2.000 Teilnehmer, die eine Tradi
tion feiern, deren Wurzeln weit zurückreichen
in die Vergangenheit. Dabei wird das ganze
Tal die gleiche prachtvolle Tracht tragen –
eine Besonderheit im gesamten Alpenraum.
Früher war das anders. Vor Beginn des
19. Jahrhunderts gab es durchaus Unterschiede in den Trachten, die im Tuxer Tal und im
Zillertal getragen wurden. Doch nachdem das
österreichische Kaiserreich im Krieg gegen
Napoleon unterlegen gewesen, das Zillertal
1806 an Bayern und 1816 – vor 200 Jahren –
wieder an die Habsburger Monarchie gefallen
war, begannen sich die Trachten im gesamten Tal mehr und mehr anzugleichen.
Auch die Aufgaben der Schützen haben sich im Laufe der Zeit verändert. Während sie früher über Jahrhunderte auch zur
militärischen Landesverteidigung eingesetzt
wurden, verstehen sich die Schützen heute
hauptsächlich als Bewahrer der Tradition. Und
als Vermittler von Gemeinschaft und Zusammenhalt. Man hilft sich gegenseitig oder in
sozialen Projekten. Dabei bilden Schüt- ➸

s they say here in the valley, only
tradition that is practised remains
alive. This is especially true of the
shooters and musical bands of
Zillertal, who celebrate their big day on August
14, when all the members of both groups
meet up in Ramsau. This event, which
has its roots in the past, is celebrated
by 2,000 participants and sees the
entire valley dressed in the same
magnificent, traditional costume –
something of a peculiarity in the
Alpine region.
It hasn’t always been this
way. Before the 19th century,
there were differences between
the traditional costumes worn
by the people of the Tux valley
and those in Zillertal. But following
the defeat of the Austrian Empire
by Napoleon during the war, with
Zillertal ceded to Bavaria in 1806 and
then back to the Habsburg monarchy in
1816, the costumes of the whole valley began
to become more consistent.
The shooters’ tasks have changed over
time as well. While they were deployed for
many centuries as national military defence,
these days the shooters see their primary
duties as upholding tradition and promoting
companionship and solidarity. It is now
about helping each other and assisting social
projects. As protectors of culture in Zillertal,
shooters and musicians stand side by side.
Their joint appearances are an expression
of this common bond, reinforcing a sense of
solidarity that will be passed on to future ➸

When they march out on special occasions, it’s a truly impressive sight.

Regiment und die Kapellen sind gern gesehen, nicht
zuletzt deshalb, da die wundervollen Trachten in ihrer
Einheitlichkeit ein beeindruckender Anblick sind.
Außer zu Bataillons- und Regimentstreffen sowie
Musikfesten rücken die Schützen und Musikanten zu
den traditionellen kirchlichen Festen wie Fronleichnam, Herz-Jesu-Fest, Hohem Frauentag, Rosenkranzsonntag und Seelensonntag aus. Dann marschieren
sie durch die Straßen, vorbei an Häusern, Geschäften
und Kirchen mit verschiedenfarbigen Kirchtürmen.
Auch das hat hier im Tal einen geschichtlichen Hintergrund: Im Jahr 739 wurde es unter den Bistümern
Salzburg und Säben-Brixen aufgeteilt, der Ziller bilde
te die Grenze zwischen den Diözesen Salzburg und
Brixen (heute Innsbruck). Auf der orografisch ➸

bands are appreciated everywhere, not least because
the uniformity of their beautiful traditional costumes
is an impressive sight.
Aside from meetings of the battalions and
regiments, and also music events, the shooters
and musicians march out at traditional church
festivals including the Feast of Corpus Christi, the
Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Feast of the
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Rosary
Sunday and Remembrance Sunday. On those days,
they parade through the streets, past houses,
shops, and churches with colourful towers. There’s a
story behind these towers, too: in the year 739, the
valley was divided into the dioceses of Salzburg and
Säben-Brixen (now Innsbruck), with the Ziller river
representing the border between the two. On the
mountainous left side of the Ziller, in the diocese of
Brixen, the church towers are red, because people
had to be more frugal and therefore chose to ➸

are, among other things, pioneers,
representatives and protectors of the
cultural heritage of the shooters and

also responsible for youth work and
the planning and administration
of important events.

sind die Kirchtürme rot – weil man hier spar
samer sein musste, wurden Ziegel verwendet. Auf der östlichen Salzburger Seite sind
die Türme grün – hier wurde teureres Kupfer
verwendet, das im Laufe der Zeit eine grüne
Patina angesetzt hat.
Doch zurück zu den Schützen und Musikanten – sowie zum Höhepunkt ihrer Aufmärsche: Bei offiziellen Anlässen des Landes Tirol werden hohe Ehrengäste mit dem
landesüblichen Empfang, einer in Österreich
einzigartigen, streng festgelegten Zeremonie
geehrt (Siehe auch Seite 90). Wenn diese beendet ist, haben die Marketenderinnen – so
etwas wie das Bindeglied zwischen Schützen
und Musikanten – ihren Auftritt. Den traditionellen Hut in die Stirn gerückt, eine aufwendige Flechtfrisur darunter, dazu ein Lächeln
auf dem Gesicht, so mischen sich die Frauen
und Mädchen unter die Gäste und kredenzen ein „Begrüßungsschnapserl“, ein volles
Stamperl aus ihrem Schnapsfässchen. Denn
wie gesagt: Nur Tradition, die wirklich gelebt
wird, bleibt auch lebendig.

But let’s get back to the shooters and
musicians of Zillertal, and to the highlight of
their processions. On official state occasions
in Tyrol, important guests are honoured
with a customary reception, a strictly
defined ceremony that is unique in Austria
(find out more on page 90). When the
reception is over, it’s time for the performance
of the sutlers – civilian merchants who,
traditionally, would serve the soldiers, and
who represent a kind of link between the
shooters and the musicians. Wearing an
elaborate plait in their hair, a traditional
hat on their head and a smile on their face,
women and girls circulate among the guests,
serving ‘welcome schnapps’ – shot glasses of
the alcoholic drink, filled from their schnapps
barrel. All of which perfectly illustrates the
saying with which we began: only tradition
that is practised remains alive.

musicians meet up for the joint parade. On these days, they all wear the same traditional
costume – something of a peculiarity in the Alpine region.
DER LANDESÜBLICHE EMPFANG
THE CUSTOMARY RECEPTION
Teil des Aufmarschs der Schützen und der
Musikanten kann – bei offiziellen Anlässen des
Landes Tirol – der sogenannte landesübliche
Empfang sein. Darunter versteht man eine
historische Ehrenbekundung, die sich aus der
Tradition des kaiserlichen Österreichs ableitet,
nach der hohe Ehrengäste mit militärischen
Ehren empfangen wurden. Der Ablauf dieses
landesüblichen Empfangs, eine in Österreich
einzigartige Zeremonie, ist streng festgelegt.
Dabei stehen Schützen und Bläser in Forma
tion, und die Ehrung erfolgt in sieben Schritten:
Sie beginnt mit einem Ankündigungssignal,
für das je nach Rang des Gastes eine unter
schiedliche Anzahl von Rufen und Stößen
gespielt wird. Danach folgt die Meldung (beim
Bundespräsidenten die Bundeshymne, beim
Landeshauptmann die Landeshymne) und das
„Abschreiten der Front“ entlang der Formation
durch den Gast. Dabei erweisen laut Statuten
„der Höchstanwesende und seine Begleitung
dem führenden Feldzeichen (der Fahne) durch
Stehenbleiben und Verneigung die Ehren
bezeugung“. Schließlich folgt die Ehrensalve
als „höchste Ehrenbezeugung“.

The custom of honouring important visitors
dates back to the days of the Austrian
Empire, when special guests were received
with military honour. Unique in Austria, the
customary reception is strictly defined and
organised. Shooters and wind players stand
in formation and the tribute takes place in
seven stages: first, a starting signal is sounded,
then different combinations of tones and notes
are played, each depending on the rank of the
guest. After that, there‘s the announcement
(the national anthem for the Federal President,
the state anthem for the State Governor),
and the guest of honour strides up and
down the front line of the assembled ranks.
Thereafter, according to the statutes, “the
supreme attendee and his companion salute
the leading standard (the flag), stopping and
taking a bow.” Finally, there follows a gun
salute, which represents the “highest honour”.

Zillertal’s wood-chopping competition. On the evening before the
main event, the lumberjacks’ night launches the championship
with live music and prepares everyone for the next day, when
the wood from Tux’s forests is chopped at lightning speed.

The whole village gathers to celebrate the cows’ safe return from
the mountains. Zillertal musicians provide entertainment, while
a farmers’ market features handicrafts, farmers’ products and
traditional delicacies, like crullers and “Melchermuas” (a kind of
Tyrolean pancake) from Zillertal. Entry is free.
