Magdeburg, the “City of Otto”
Magdeburg is the “City of Otto”. So what does that mean? The capital city of the
German Land of Saxony-Anhalt was given this nickname in commemoration of the two
famous Ottos who had a great impact on its history. Emperor Otto the Great
transformed Magdeburg into a metropolis in the early Middle Ages and Otto von
Guericke fascinated the world with his hemispheres experiments.
The name “City of Otto” also refers to more than just these two individuals. It is an
attitude to life, a pragmatic approach and a sense of hospitality. Come and experience
Otto for yourself!
Welcome to Magdeburg!
4
Magdeburg, the City of Otto, is now over 1200 years old! Nowadays,
the face of the city is not only characterised by impressive historic
medieval buildings, quaint Baroque facades and monumental
Gründerzeit districts, but also by its modern architecture, for
example an architectural masterpiece by Friedensreich Hundertwasser:
THE GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG.
5
6
7
Magdeburg is situated on the banks of the river Elbe and offers numerous activities on and
around the water! The Elbe Cycle Route leads cyclists directly through the city and from the
banks of the river Elbe, the “Weiße Flotte” runs boat trips to the Waterway Junction or further
into the idyllic Elbe landscape. Extensive parks can also be found close to the river and invite
visitors to enjoy walks and strolls to the unspoilt Elbe floodplains. When you return from your
walk, an abundance of restaurants and cafés with a view over the river will be waiting to
greet you!
8
Come to Magdeburg and enjoy a wonderful experience, for example at the marvellous
exhibitions in the Cultural History Museum, which are bound to leave a lasting impression.
You can also visit the Opera House and Theatre to enjoy culture at its very best or be entertained
by the Magdeburg Puppet Theatre and its international puppetry and marionette shows. In the
summer months, you can make the most of the interesting entertainment and unique
atmosphere of the Magdeburg Open-Air Summer.
On top of all this, Magdeburg has even more to offer: shopping fun, club and bars,
spa experiences ... the list goes on and on!

Emperor Otto the Great‘s heart truly belonged to Magdeburg. He gave the city a grand
cathedral, the predecessor to the current Magdeburg Cathedral, and transformed
Magdeburg into the first ‘German’ capital city and the centre of power of his Holy Roman
Empire. Otto the First was the most powerful ruler in central Europe in the 10th century.
Magdeburg, Otto‘s favourite residence, flourished under his reign and he presented the
city to his first wife Edith as a morning gift at their wedding. Otto acquired the epithet
“the Great” when he defeated the Magyars in the famous Battle of Lechfeld in 955. In
962, he travelled together with his wife Adelaide to Rome, where he became the first
King to be crowned Emperor.
The imperial couple returned to Magdeburg in 972 and a procession to the cathedral was
held for them on Palm Sunday in 973. Otto died in Memleben shortly after this event.
In accordance with old tradition, his heart was buried at his place of death in Memleben
and his other remains were laid to rest in a tomb in Magdeburg Cathedral.
Following the Thirty Years’ War, Lord Mayor Otto von Guericke played a significant role
in the development of the city of Magdeburg. Alongside his role as Mayor, von Guericke
was also a pioneer and founding father of scientific phenomena and fields of work such
as static electricity and meteorology.
He left his mark on history as the ‘great son of the city’, a diplomat and scientist who
was, quite simply, a universal genius. Otto von Guericke, a trained jurist, dedicated his
entire life and work to his hometown of Magdeburg, where he was born and buried.
In addition to his political activities, von Guericke also dedicated a lot of his time to his
scientific research. One of his most famous experiments, following his invention of the
vacuum pump in around 1650, was the Magdeburg hemispheres experiment. In fact,
many aspects of public life in the city are still closely associated with Otto von Guericke
nowadays. The university was named after him, the Otto von Guericke Society cultivates
his legacy in the Guericke Zentrum in the Lukasklause and he has had his own monument in front of the Town Hall since 1907.
To this day, Georg Philipp Telemann is the most productive composer in musical
history. He left behind an extensive and varied collection of work including more than
fifty operas and hundreds of instrumental compositions. Alongside Johann Sebastian
Bach and George Frideric Handel, Telemann was one of the prolific composers in the era
of enlightenment in Germany and had a significant influence on German Baroque music.
He came from a well-educated family from the city of Magdeburg, where he grew up
and attended the Cathedral School. Even as a young boy, Telemann learned to play a
multitude of instruments and when he was ten years old, he began to compose his first
pieces. He then completed his musical education in 1697 before achieving a degree of
popularity both in Germany and abroad that no composer had ever seen before and
becoming one of the most diverse personalities in musical history. The International
Telemann Society is based in his city of birth, Magdeburg. Every year, the Society either
celebrates the Magdeburg Telemann Festival or organises the International Telemann
Competition, in which it presents the city’s Telemann Award for outstanding
achievements in the interpretation, commemoration and research of the composer’s life
and work. The city has been home to a statue of Georg Philipp Telemann since 1981.
Martin Luther is one of the outstanding personalities of German history, boasting
international standing as the reformer and founder of German Protestantism. As an
Augustine monk, he became a Theologian and Professor and initially tried to achieve
necessary reforms without splitting the church. By nailing his theses to the door of
Wittenberg Castle Church in 1517, however, he started the reformation and began his
fight against the abuse of power and moral decline of the Church, as well as his fight
for religious freedom. As a young student, Martin Luther often stayed in
Magdeburg and in 1516, he visited the Augustine monastery, at which he
spent more time a year later. Luther gave several sermons in the monastery church (which became what is now known as the Walloon Church in
1694) and in St John’s Church in the year 1524. By doing so, he actively
contributed to guiding the reformation in the city of Magdeburg along more
bourgeois and moderate lines. The city was ultimately considered to be a
stronghold of German Protestantism. In 1886, a monument was erected in
St John’s Church as a reminder of Luther’s visits to Magdeburg.

Magdeburg Cathedral, dedicated to St. Maurice and St. Catherine
Tourist Card: free guided tour
Otto the Great originally commissioned the construction of Magdeburg
Cathedral in 955. It was later destroyed by a city fire and then re-erected
as the first Gothic cathedral building on German soil in 1209. Magdeburg
Cathedral now forms part of the “Romanesque Road”, a popular tourist route
running through the German Land of Saxony-Anhalt. Visitors to the Cathedral can
still view the tomb of Emperor Otto and admire a transept and a variety of
exhibits dating back to the Romanesque period. The building is also home to
original works of art of European importance created in Gothic style, for example
the sculptures of ”The Wise and the Foolish Virgins“ or “The Divine Couple”. On
top of all this, another huge discovery was recently made during excavation work
in the Cathedral: the tomb of Queen Edith, the first wife of Emperor Otto.

Magdeburg Waterway Junction with Historical Ship Lift
The centrepiece of the Waterway Junction is the longest canal bridge in the
world. The steel bridge, which has made a name for itself as a technical
masterpiece of the century, is 918 metres long and takes the Mittelland Canal
across the river Elbe. Together with the water-saving lock in Rothensee and
the double ship lift in Hohenwarte, the bridge forms part of a gigantic
construction project that improved the connection between the waterways of
Hanover, Magdeburg and Berlin. You can gain a clear insight into the
development of water transport technology by visiting the historic Rothensee
ship lift, which has been in operation since 1938 and boasts a special feature,
namely a lock chamber that is installed on two floats and can therefore be
moved.

St. John‘s Church
St. Sebastian Cathedral Church
St. Sebastian Cathedral Church is a Catholic Episcopal
church. Its construction was ordered by Archbishop Gero in
1015, but following a fire, the building was transformed
into a Gothic hall church in the 14th and 15th centuries.
St. John’s Church, the oldest parish church in Magdeburg, was
first mentioned in 941. It is closely linked to the work of Martin
Luther, who held a sermon in the overcrowded church building
in 1524.The church can now be visited as a museum.

General Terms and Conditions
1.1 By making a booking, which can only be done in writing, the
Client offers MMKT the binding conclusion of a travel contract on
the basis of the travel or trip advertisement, all supplementary
details that form the basis of the booking and these Terms and

Client confirmation of his/her booking. This confirmation does not
require a specific form. The Client shall receive a written copy of
his/her booking confirmation during or immediately after
conclusion of the contract.
1.3 If the content of the booking confirmation deviates from
the content of the booking itself, this indicates a new offer from
MMKT to which it is bound for 10 days. In this case, the contract
shall become valid when the Client accepts the amended offer.
The Client can do so by paying a deposit for his/her booking,
paying the outstanding balance or by actually commencing travel.
