Leisure walks
and roaming
the town
On Raatihuoneenkatu there are the Main
square, Town Hall, a hotel and restaurants,
and a shopping and accommodation business,
in which there once was the famous hotel Centrum. The nomenclature of the town streets is
very regal, very holy and very maritime. Prince
Erik, Alexander as well as Holy Eskil have all
received their own streets.
From the Inner harbour the wanderer
makes way along the shore towards the guest
marina. While passing the jetties one can
in summer time admire an armada of small
boats cruising the sound daily, one to take
up the nets, one on the way to the summer
cottage, and one just out for a joyride. In the
winter, one can see amidst the white powder
snow small huddles of ice fishers and walkers
enjoying the brisk winter wind.
A traveller can rent a rowboat to look at the
town from the sea, or borrow a bicycle and
head out for the Kotilampi nature walk. Ride
the bike to the Fish Harbour and at the other
end of town again to the camping site, where
there’s also a fi ne-sanded beach for swimming.
On a leisurely roundtrip one can take a look
inside the church. At the edge of the Church
Square, in the middle of a natural patch of
pine trees, there is a church resembling a ship,
built in 1965. The yards of the little town with
wooden houses are one more wonderful than
the other. The house owners, in competition
with each other, have created stories in their
yards, things for the walker-by to admire. By
walking slowly and taking in the charming
items in the yards one can even get a history
lesson in the town’s past and present.

Flanieren ohne Eile
König Gustav III, der die Stadt Kaskinen gründete, würde sicher gerne entlang seiner eigenen Esplanade laufen. Der zu
Ehren von Gustav genannte Platz ist eine der vielen reizenden
Straßen der Stadt. Die Gitternetzform führt den Wanderer sicher kreuz und quer durch die behagliche Holzhausstadt.

Willkommen in Kaskinen
Herr Bladh hat seine eigene Straße erhalten, so auch Johann
David Cneiff, der seinerzeit als Beamter für die Schafhaltung
des Bezirks tätig war.
An der Raatihuoneenkatu befinden sich unter anderem der
Marktplatz, das Rathaus, ein Hotel und Restaurants sowie ein
Geschäft- und Beherbergungsbetrieb, in dem sich das früher
berühmte Hotel Centrum befand. Sehr königlich, heilig und
maritim sind die Straßennamen der Stadt. Prinz Erik, Alexander und auch der heilige Eskil haben ihre eigenen Straßen
erhalten.

Neben dem Binnenhafen setzt der Wanderer seinen Gang in
Richtung Ufer zum Gästehafen fort. Während man an zig kleinen Stegen vorbei läuft, kann man im Sommer die Kleinbootarmada bewundern, die die Meerenge täglich durchkreuzt, sei
es zu den Netzen, zum Sommerhaus oder einfach spaßeshalber.
Im Winter, mitten im frisch gefallenen Schnee hocken Eisangler und den Winterwind genießende Spaziergänger.
Der Reisende kann ein Ruderboot mieten, um die Stadt vom
Meer aus anzuschauen, oder ein Fahrrad ausleihen und auf den
Naturpfad von Kotilampi zusteuern. Er kann zum Fischhafen
radeln und am anderen Ende der Stadt wieder zum Campingplatz, wo ein feinsandiger Badestrand wartet.

Auf dem beschaulichen Rundgang kann man unter anderem einen kurzen Besuch in der Kirche machen. Am Rande
des Kirchplatzes, mitten im wildwachsend belassenen Kieferbestand, steht eine einem Schiff nachgebaute Kirche, die im
Jahr 1965 errichtet wurde.
Die Höfe der Holzhausstadt sind einer hübscher als der
andere. Die Hausbesitzer haben um die Wette ihre Höfe geschmückt, mit Geschichten, mit Sachen, welche die Passanten
bewundern können. Langsam flanierend und die bezaubernden
Gegenstände betrachtend kann man sogar eine Unterrichtstunde in der Geschichte der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart
der Stadt bekommen.

King Gustav the Third, who founded the town
of Kaskinen, would love to wander in his
own park. The avenue named in the honour
of King Gustav is one of the many charming streets in the town. The square town plan
takes the walker all around the cosy little
town of wooden houses without fear of getting lost. Master Bladh has also received his
own street, as has Johan David Cneiff, who
once acted as the highest sheep care officer of
the province.

The town, already from the time of its foundation known for its excellent harbour, still
lives from trade and the sea. The years gone
by have been rewarding for Kaskinen, and the
town still follows its independent path buffered
by the growing port operations and the industry and trade essentially connected with them.

Peter Johan Bladh is written down as the actual founding father of the town. The Bladhs
are still remembered in the sympathetic town,
in the street names, in a building which was
commissioned by Peter Johan Bladh, and is today used as the town’s cultural and recreational
centre, and in the historic figure which comes
to life a few times each year honouring various
events with his presence.
Als eigentlicher Gründer der Stadt wird Peter Johan Bladh
genannt. In den Straßennamen sind die Bladhs in der sympathischen Stadt weiterhin gegenwärtig, auch in dem heutigen
Kultur- und Mehrzweckhaus, das Peter Johan Bladh zu seiner Zeit bauen ließ sowie in einer dramatischen Figur, die
immer noch ein paar Mal im Jahr verschiedene Veranstaltungen durch ihre Anwesenheit beehrt.

On the island of Kaskö at the Bothnian Sea
Coast by the vast open plains of Ostrobothnia,
a staple town was founded in 1785. The town
which had license to foreign trade was established on the orders of the Crown. The town
plan was implemented with rectangular street
layout in accordance with the following royal
accompanying words by King Gustav the Third;
That place in Kaskö, where the new town shall
be built, is to be geometrically measured and a
proper plan with its streets and squares drawn.
Am Bottnischen Meerbusen, auf der Insel Kaskö, nahe dem
breiten und weiten Ostbottnien, wurde 1785 eine Stapelstadt
gegründet. Die mit Außenhandelsrechten ausgestattete Stadt
entstand auf Anweisung des Königs. Der Bebauungsplan von
Kaskinen erhielt eine Gitternetzform durch folgendes königliches Begleitwort von Gustav III; Die Stelle in Kaskinen;
an der die neue Stadt errichtet werden soll, wird geometrisch
vermessen und ein entsprechender Plan mit Straßen und
Plätzen gezeichnet.

Kaskinen is Finland’s smallest town measured by the number

ostbottnische Land aus.

The discrete
charm of the
Burgher home
The Town museum maintained by the Kaskinen Local History and Culture Association
is located in a townsman’s house, which was
built for ship owner Carl Daniel Renström, in
the middle of the 19th century.
The museum presents the history of Kaskinen
from interesting viewpoints. The collection of
more than 2000 catalogued items sheds light on
life in Kaskinen from the 18th century all the way
to the last decades. Part of the rooms of the museum display the life of a townsman’s family in
the 1850`s. Other rooms include shows of the interior of a fisherman’s cottage, a classroom from
olden times and the offices of a ship owner.

In the town’s former fishing harbour one can feel going back
to the fishermen’s life of a century back. In the fishing harbour, the languid peace of olden times comes back by the
fishermen’s net sheds, in the scenery of gray timber in front
of the eyes of the Bothnian Sea.
In dem früheren Fischereihafen der Stadt wird
man in das Fischerleben vor einem Jahrhundert zurückversetzt. Am Fischufer verweilt
der Betrachter in Ruhe neben den Netzschuppen der Fischer, in einer Landschaft der grauen Blockhäuser angesichts des Bottnischen
Meerbusens.
The exhibits at the Fishing Museum have been built according to different themes such as fi shing for the Baltic herring, powan and salmon catching, and sealing. The articles
and tools on display at the museum were used by fi shermen
at home and in their storehouses by the shore. A large collection of photographs introduces the viewer to fi shing as
a livelihood. Herring catching has been given a lot of room
as the most important fi shery livelihood in Kaskinen. The

The museum has a permanent textile exhibit, an interesting array of suits, dresses and hats,
and also a collection of visual art works by local
artists. The Town museum is open from June to
August, on Wednesdays and Sundays 2 pm to 5

From Vire and
Kipinä to the cat
head engine
The Engine Museum of Kaskinen is a tribute
to the history of a local engineering shop. In
the museum located close to the guest marina
of Kaskinen, there are local engines on display
in addition to dozens of other models, such as
air and water cooled inboard motors, the first
models of outboard motors and engines all the
way from the beginning of the 19th century to
the pearls of the 1960’s. Some of the engines are
home-made. The museum also displays Lake
District models from Kuopio, such as Vire and
Kipinä, and a Valmet motor from Linnavuori.

Wohnhauses
Das von dem Heimatverein Kaskinen unterhaltene Museum befindet sich in einem großbürgerlichen Haus, das der
Reeder Carl Daniel Renström in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bauen ließ.
Das Museum zeigt die Geschichte von Kaskinen aus interessanten Gesichtspunkten. Durch die Sammlungen der
über 2 000 aufgelisteten Gegenstände erfährt man das Leben
in Kaskinen vom 18. Jahrhundert an bis zu den letzten Jahrzehnten des vergangenen Jahrhunderts. In den Räumen wird
das Leben einer Großbürgerfamilie in den 1850er Jahren gezeigt. Dort sind auch das Interieur einer Fischerstube, ein alter
Klassenraum sowie das Kontor des Reeders zu sehen.
Im Museum sind eine Textil-Dauerausstellung, eine interessante Sammlung von Kleidung und Hüten, darüber hinaus
auch eine Auswahl von Arbeiten der lokalen bildenden Künstler und Künstlerinnen zu sehen. Die Öffnungszeiten des Heimatmuseums sind von Juni bis August mittwochs und sonntags von 14.00 - 17.00 Uhr oder nach Vereinbarung. Tel. +358

Kipinä-Motoren zum
Katzenkopfmotor
Das Motormuseum von Kaskinen ehrt die Geschichte des
örtlichen Maschinenbaus. In dem nahe dem Gästehafen
von Kaskinen befindlichen Museum sind örtliche Motoren
sowie -zig andere Modelle ausgestellt, z.B. luft- und wassergekühlte Mittelmotoren, erste Modelle der Außenbordmotoren, vom Beginn des vergangenen Jahrhunderts bis zu
den Glanzstücken der 60er Jahre. Ein Teil der Motoren ist
selbstgefertigt. Es werden auch Modelle der Kuopio-Seegegenden ausgestellt, wie z.B. Vire und Kipinä sowie unter anderem Valmet vom Motorenwerk Linnavuori.

In the vicinity of the Fishing Harbour, there is an old red windmill guarding the area on Myllykallio. The mill, built in 1848,
has been brought on site from the Groop estate in Ylimarkku,
Närpiö. Beside the windmill, there is a memorial for the sad
Moses night. In 1854, the most devastating drowning accident
in the history of Kaskinen took place on the Bothnian Sea. On
the night of September 4th, the day of Moses, 11 fishermen
drowned in a northwest gale almost like a hurricane.
To commemorate the event, the Kaskinen Fishermen’s
Guild in 1961 raised a memorial for those who lost their lives.
Beside the memorial there is an anchor which has been salvaged from the sea at the Sound of Kaskinen, symbolising the
verse: ”An anchor has been thrown into eternity”.
Community centre
in the House of Bladh
The house of Bladh was commissioned by Peter Johan Bladh
in 1788 as a merchant’s house. At the end of the decade Bladh
released the upstairs hall for the use of the church, and this is
where the church activities took place all the way until 1965.
On the ground floor of the house, underneath the church
floor, was the residence of the clergy. At the beginning of the
19th century, the house was sold to the Town of Kaskinen
and after that it has been the seat of, at one time or another,
the District Court, the Magistrate, the Police Station, and almost all the schools in town.
The house has been refurbished to meet modern needs as
a facility for conferences and educational events, as a venue
for festive events and a concert hall praised for its acoustics.

In der Nähe des Fischufers auf Myllykallio
steht bewachend ehrwürdig eine rote Windmühle. Die im Jahre 1848 gebaute Mühle ist aus
dem Landgut Groop bei Ylimarkku in Närpiö
dorthin verlegt worden. Neben der Windmühle steht ein Denkmal der traurigen Nacht von
Moses. Am Bottnischen Meerbusen ereignete
sich 1854 der größte Unfall in der Geschichte
von Kaskinen. In der Nacht zum 4. September,
am Moses-Tag, ertranken 11 Fischer in einem
orkanartigen Nord-Ost-Wind.
Zum Andenken an das Geschehene errichtete die Fischergilde von Kaskinen im Jahre
1961 ein Denkmal für die Verunglückten. Neben dem Denkmal liegt ein Anker, der aus der
Bucht Kaskinen hochgezogen worden ist, und
er symbolisiert die Strophe: ”Der Anker ist in
die Ewigkeit geworfen worden”.

Mehrzweckhaus
Peter Johan Bladh ließ 1788 das Bladh-Haus
als ein Kaufmannshaus bauen. Ende des Jahrzehnts stellte Bladh den Saal der oberen Etage
der Kirche zur Verfügung, und die Kirche befand sich hier bis zum Jahre 1965. Im Untergeschoß, unter dem Kirchenfußboden wohnte
der Klerus. Am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts
wurde das Haus an die Stadt Kaskinen verkauft und danach befanden sich im Haus das
Gericht, der Magistrat, das Polizeiamt und
fast alle Schulen der Stadt.
Das Haus ist den heutigen Bedürfnissen entsprechend saniert worden und ist nun ein geeigneter Ort für Sitzungen, Schulungen, Feste
und Konzerte, dessen Akustik gepriesen wird.

The Spring Market of Kaskinen takes place
during the last weekend in May. On the
threshold of summer, a colourful market of
stalls fi lling the streets is spread out on the
Avenue and the Town Square.
The old Fish Harbour comes to life in the beginning of July during the Fish Harbour Days.
During a lively weekend, fish is served in many
forms, and between the many programme numbers with the sea as their theme, there is serving

July, there is the annual yard sales day of flea markets, and a picnic in the park with a jazz concert.
Kaskinen Music Summer is a concert series
filled with classical music played at the unique
acoustics of the Bladh house, a center for cultural
events, and on the spectacular lighthouse island
Sälgrund.
The Herring Market in October gathers in
people around the province to the Inner harbour
in honour of the Baltic herring. Local food and
artefacts and handicraft from the region are for
sale in addition to herring.
Annually, there are also several art exhibitions
in Kaskinen. The local Art Association and Gallery exhibit art works of many forms in genuine
surroundings.

Frühlingsmarkt findet in Kaskinen am letzten Wochenende
im Mai statt. Am Anfang des Sommers sind der Boulevard
und der Markt voll belegt mit bunten Marktprodukten.
Anfang Juli während des traditionellen Marktes lebt das
alte Fischufer wieder auf. Während des lebhaften Wochenendes wird Fisch in verschiedenen Variationen serviert,
zwischen dem Programmangebot mit Meeresthemen wird
Kaffee getrunken, werden nette Sachen verkauft, wird Freude
geschenkt oder man lässt die Seele einfach baumeln, mit den
Gedanken in früheren Zeiten verweilend. Ende Juli findet auch
der jährliche Innenhof-Flohmarkt-Tag und im Park ein Jazzkonzert mit Picknick statt.

Sälgrund Pilot Station
is located only a fi fteen-minute trip away from the town. The lighthouse
island where the Pilot Station was based is a wonderful experience as a venue for meetings and conferences and leisure-time activities. At the south end of the
rocky island, there is a fantastic view to the open sea.
The maritime history can be traced on the location
of the pilot station and the lighthouse. Kaskinen has
been a seat of seafaring ever since the Middle Ages.
In addition to lodging, the traveller can hop over the
reeling into a boat for a seal safari or a fishing trip.
At Sälgrund, there is room to rest and let one’s
thoughts fly. In the Pilot Station facilities, there are
more than 30 beds so even a bigger group will overnight there comfortably. It is also possible to have a
sauna evening at Sälgrund. The spacious sauna seats
ten people to enjoy the bath, and there is a fireplace in
the dressing room.

The Guest Marina with its sheltered landingstage can be accessed by a direct channel from the open
sea. There are 50 mooring places, and the depth is 3.5
meters. The harbour has service and washing facilities,
selling of fuel and a septic tank ready for boaters and
sailors. Guests also have access to a WLAN connection
(wireless local area network).
The harbour has often acted as a stopover destination
in big sailing races. From June to mid-August there is
also a tourist information desk with adjoining café open
in the harbour, maintained by the Town of Kaskinen.

Die Lotsenstation von Sälgrund liegt
eine Viertelstunde von der Stadt entfernt. Die Leuchtturminsel, die Standort der Lotsenstation war, ist erlebnisreicher Ort für Freizeit- und Tagungsaktivitäten.
Im Süden der Klippeninsel öffnen sich grandiose Aussichten auf das offene Meer.
Die Geschichte der Seefahrt wird sichtbar in der
Gegend um die Lotsenstation und den Leuchtturm.
Seefahrt gibt es in Kaskinen schon seit dem Mittelalter. Der Reisende kann sich über die Reling aufs Boot
schwingen und zum Beispiel eine Robbensafari oder
einen Angelausflug unternehmen.
Auf Sälgrund gibt es Raum sich auszuruhen und
die Gedanken fliegen zu lassen. In den Räumlichkeiten
der Lotsenstation kann auch eine größere Gruppe
wohnen. Es gibt Betten für 30 Personen. Auf Sälgrund
kann auch ein Sauna-Abend verbracht werden. Auf
den Liegebänken der geräumigen Sauna haben zehn
Personen Platz sich zu wärmen. Die Umkleidekabine
ist auch mit einem Kamin ausgestattet.

See aus. Es sind 50 Anlegeplätze vorhanden, Tiefe

The physical exercise options in Kaskinen are splendid.
A nature path takes the walkers all around the island of Kaskinen. Walkers can roam the area of Kotilampi where there
are, amongst other things, a sauna and an outdoors dance floor,
which are rented out for associations and private people.
There are two illuminated running tracks in Kaskinen, one
of 2.7 km in the area of Kotilampi, and a one kilometre track
in the vicinity of the camping area. In the winter, the running
tracks are converted into skiing tracks. The tennis court and
the indoor sports hall are also very popular. Ice swimmers are
pampered with spacious and cosy sauna facilities in the Guest
Marina. In addition to the indoor sports hall, there is a versatile
gym, a sports field, a beach volley field and a skating park. Exercising opportunities are increased by an 18-hole golf course in
Kauhajoki, 60 km from Kaskinen, and the ski resorts in Parra
and Pyhävuori some 40 km from Kaskinen.

Measured by the catch, one of the biggest fish harbours in
Finland and the greatest centre for food herring is located in
Kaskinen. In the fish harbour at the south tip of the island,
there are several fish processing plants. Big herring trawlers
bring some 20 million kilos of Baltic herring into Kaskinen a
year. Of this, about 10 million kilos is food herring.
