The four rings brand has celebrated its 100th
birthday in 2009. The efficiency of its models
is a characteristic of Audi since its foundation
Editorial
A new year starts, it is the time of reflection and planning. In 2009, Audi
is celebrating its centenary and it is
our birthday as well. It has been 15
years since the first number of our
Newsletter was published. Would
you like to see how much we have
changed?
Additionally, in this number we
would like to know better our Chief
Operations Officer, Carlos Araujo
Maté, and show you his opinion after
his first months with us.
Grupo Antolin has been characterized by pursuing customers´ satisfaction and thanks to that, we will continue being awarded by them. The
last prizes achieved from Volkswagen, General Motors, Nissan and
Ford are a good example of this.
Keep on working like this!
A lot of us are familiarized with the
Knowledge Management model that
Grupo Antolin is setting up. As a very
important part of our organization
we offer you more details about its
establishment.
There are still so many of our plants
to visit. We invite you to discover
Ototrim (in Turkey) and Grupo Antolin-Cambrai (in France). Two plants,
two countries, two cultures and the
same aim - adapt to the changing
automotive world and exceed with
success the challenges launched by
our clients.
Electric vehicles are a part of this
change in our market. Is the mass
production of them possible in a
short period of time? Which are the
opportunities for Grupo Antolin? We
provide you some clues to answer
these questions and the other ones
as well.
But more stories are still waiting in
this Newsletter. Keep on reading and
find them. w
José Antolin Toledano
Chairman
in first person
The year 2009 is just about to finish. The crisis seems to
have passed its peak in a year that has caused difficulties
in all areas, especially in the automotive world. But the
storm begins to ease up. The changes that have occurred
in the market demand us to adapt to a new scenario in order to remain competitive; both financial and technological changes will require an additional effort to continue
growing.
This effort has been supported by the renewal of a syndicated loan guaranteed by 40 banks, through a successful transaction thanks to the unanimous support from the
Financial Community in an environment characterized by
the crisis. A fact that will enable us to face the investments needed with the necessary financial strength to
meet our strategic plan.
Now is the time to join forces and maintain our position
as the market leaders. We have the capacity and the work
force necessary to carry it out. QUALITY, KNOWLEDGE
and EFFFICIENCY are the key values that we must follow
to achieve our progress and to secure our future.
Therefore, we face a year in which the commitment of all
of us is more important than ever to meet the demands
of an extra effort to ensure the efficiency of our costs and
the productivity improvement.
Finally, I would like to send you a message of confidence,
enthusiasm and hope for the coming year. Thank you for
your fighting spirit and my best wishes for all of us, we all
are part of this great company, Grupo Antolin.
Merry Christmas to all! w

What is your vision after these six months of
management?
After six months we have made this interview to know at first hand his opinion
about the company and the future plans
Could you tell us about your professional experience?
My first job as an engineer was at the Spanish Society of
the Tudor Accumulator, a Spanish multinational company
which manufactured batteries, and at the end of the 70’s
considered that the electric vehicles could be used in some
special applications and decided to prove it by carrying out
the transformation of an urban bus into an electrical one,
as well as a dozen mail delivery vans and a garbage truck
of 20 Tm. Performing that transformation and proving its
usefulness for the service was my first job. When I look at
it from my present point of view I can say that I had the
chance of being a pioneer, although at that time it was too
early for this project.
I spent seven more years at Tudor and I was the manager
of a company in the Group when I had the opportunity to
come back to Burgos as the managing director of Ansa
Lemförder, which then was part of a partnership between
the incipient Grupo Antolin and ZF Lemförder. I spent the
first five years, until 1994, being part of ZF Lemförder on
one side and of Grupo Antolin on the other side, and reporting to the Antolin brothers. When they sold their part
in the company in 1994 I stayed in ZF Ansa Lemförder
for another ten years, the last five years, first as a corporate responsible of ZF Lemförder for Europe, two business
lines, components and axis, and then as the world responsible for the components line for suspension and steering.
At that moment, the business turnover under my responsibility exceeded 1,000 million Euros, with operations in
Europe, including Turkey, Slovakia, Germany, France, Spain
and the United Kingdom, Nafta, the United States and
Mexico, Brazil, India, China and Korea. Altogether, more
than 20 plants all over the world.
These months have been determined by the strong crisis in
our sector, obviously the same one in which I was in ZF, and
by the need to keep a strong pressure in all our operations,
started in the crisis committees of the Group from the end
of 2008, in order to adjust to the situation of the market
as much as possible. In a special way, this situation became
critical when two of our main customers in the USA, GM
and Chrysler filed for Chapter 11. In these months, I have
visited 31 plants of the group in three continents, and I have
had to get to know the Group and our situation quickly.
The measures taken from the end of 2008 have shown that
the effort and sacrifice made by us all have allowed us, on
the one hand, to negotiate again our syndicated loan with
acceptable conditions and, on the other hand, to reduce
significantly our balance point, thus containing the strong
losses and getting ready for certain recovery of the market
such as the one arisen in the last two months. My vision is
that the taken measures were the most appropriate ones
and that we still have plenty of things to do, some of them
not too easy, which the new organization must be able to
undertake in the best conditions and about which I feel optimistic regarding the results for our future.
How is the management of a company devoted
to the manufacture of parts for the interior of
the vehicles different from your former company, orientated to mechanics?
The truth is that I must point out two considerations when
speaking about the differences in management: one related to
the differences between the chassis and the interior of the vehicle businesses, and the other one concerning the differences
between a German and a Spanish multinational company.
To start with the easiest point, the differences between chassis
and interior have surprised me in many ways. The main ones:
the design, in the sense of “style”, which is a subject which
does not exist in the chassis. The diversity: concerning the chassis, a “Golf” is practically a technical solution; concerning the
interior, it implies a great diversity with a huge variety of models
which are subject to frequent restyling. The chassis is orientated
to “function” and the interior to design and the customer’s perception of the senses: they are totally different. This fact conditions the relationship with the customer and the amount of
engineering needed to support the diversity and the complexity,
and to keep a permanent relationship with the customer.

Innovation must be, clearly, part of the
The differences concerning their different business culture
are also outstanding and perhaps more difficult to be summarised. The Group is above all a very young company, due
to its business course and the age of most of its staff. ZF will
soon be 100 years old. The German style gives more importance to the managing systems, to the strategic planning, to
the organization of the activities in exchange for, sometimes,
losing freshness and accuracy in the decision processes. The
orientation to the financial results, growing with profits, with
special attention to profitability over the capital invested in
the business, is a constant feature always present in ZF.
The Group keeps an outstanding liveliness in the decision
processes and a huge customer orientation. The internationality and industrial and technical implementation or
the Group are amazing and doubtlessly one of our challenges as an organization.
Preserving the best features of each culture in the management is one of my personal challenges.
Which values will you protect in your management?
I personally believe in people’s commitment, participation
and integration. A special mention to the managers and
the leadership expected from us. I believe in communication and team work as the basic principles of a management which must insist on continuous improvement and
on the creation of value for customers and share holders,
and which allows for the professional and personal development of the company staff.
The ability to innovate in the management styles, in the products and services we offer to our customers, in the process
of transformation, will be the key of our development in the
future and also of the differentiation from our competitors.

genetic code of a company leader in
the automotive sector
On which pillars must the Group’s strategy lay
and which change processes will Grupo Antolin
have to undertake in order to continue being
leaders?
After six months in the company and at the doors of starting a broad debate about our strategy to back up the
business plan in 2010, I do not see myself totally ready to
speak about the pillars of the strategy. Nonetheless, I will
take the risk of bringing forward some ideas.
The market, which must be the engine of our strategy, is
facing some drastic crossroads: changes in the consumers’
patterns, social concern and pressure regarding the environmental impact, growth in the markets of Asia and Eastern
Europe with an overbooking in the traditional markets, new
segments of vehicles for the mature markets, hybrids, electric
cars, very low consumption, personalization of the vehicles
and so on, and customers in the emerging countries which
for the first time join the consumer habits with strong pressure on the prices, new competitors and so on. Our environment will keep on being restrictive with the credit and probably, the automotive sector in the mature markets will not be
among the most interesting sectors for the banking sector.
The Group will have to face all this, which will translate into
risks, but also into opportunities that we must face adapting our strategy in order to take the best profits from our
location, from our ability to innovate in all fields and on
line with the opportunities and demands which are correctly
identified in the market. This will depend on our ability to
reduce manufacturing and operating costs, in a special way
the capital, investment and development costs per project
requirements, to reduce the times between customers’ requirements and industrialization, to keep up impeccable
quality, which is one of the best measures of the correct
customer orientation…
And we must be able to do all this fast enough, efficiently
and extracting the best from our main resource, the people in the Group all over the world. Internationalization,
development and training, and specially seizing, which is
usually called “empowerment”, of the people and of the
organization will require the most dramatic changes in order to keep our leadership.
“

products or services at the standards expected
by the customers
To what extent do you think an appropriate management of knowledge is important for the sustainability and growth of the companies?
problem solving, use of our systems and resources… and
we must do it in order to provide the customer with value
and differentiate from our competitors.
In a company within the sector in which we operate and
considering our fast development, with such a broad implementation in the world and with the challenge of growing
in such different cultural environments, preserving, developing and transmitting knowledge is one of our challenges
in order to grow up and be capable of competing.
Innovation, from this approach and in any framework, has
to be aligned with the aims of the business which must be
clearly defined, communicated and assumed by the organization. Innovation must be, clearly, part of the genetic code
of a company leader in the automotive sector.
Our sector requires from us the highest speed to implement new ideas and to set up new points of activity in the
world, being capable, from the very first moment, to supply
our products or services at the standards expected by the
customers. The Group knows how expensive it is for us,
in every sense, to undertake new activities which in other
places could seem to be a routine.
Which message would you like to bring to the
attention of all the people who form Grupo Antolin?
Which role will technological innovation play in
the future of our company?
In the automotive sector, innovation is the best recipe in
order to survive successfully. We all have companies from
our sector in mind which, through their technological ability
to innovate, are in a unique position concerning customers
and consumers. I believe that we all somehow aspire to take
that position.
For the Group, our challenge is to locate innovation again,
this is to say, to create unique and best permanent alternatives, in the centre of our activity. We must innovate in
all fields, in our products, processes, managing practices,
I would like to tell them that they must feel proud of the
business project they have been supporting up to the
present moment and which is going through this complex
situation of the market. I understand these are difficult
times, especially considering that the experience of the
company has always consisted on a continuous and almost
giddy growth. But these are also times to consolidate the
basis of our company, to reinforce ourselves, to convince
ourselves that we will be able to take advantage of the opportunities and adapt to the new challenges of this activity
better than our competitors if we stick together to our business project and trust our future.
Thank them as well for their attitude and support to the
company in these times.
And, personally, thank you for their welcome too. I had never felt foreign to the Group due to my historical relationship,
but they have made me feel back home really quickly. w

corporate responsability
Innoversia
Innovation, diversity, versatility and universality are the concepts which
inspire Innoversia, the line of action launched by the Corporate Responsibility area of Grupo Antolin in March 2009, which bets on training as the
fundamental tool for development in emerging countries.
“
In all these plans, Innoversia
wants to offer official
”
certifications together with
educational organizations
News Grupo Antolin
10 · Winter 2009
The aim of Innoversia is a double one, on the one
hand, to favour the personal improvement of the
employee who receives the training and, on the
other hand, the development of the business itself,
since these initiatives turn out into workers who are
happier, more efficient and involved in the Group
Members of one of the courses in Brazil
Students of the Telecourse of
Portugal, to obtain the primary
education qualification
This way, Innoversia contributes with a strategic value, significant for Grupo Antolin: it has a positive impact on the
motivation of its employees, and creates a reserve of workers who not only have specific training, but also know the
company deeply, its history and its way to do things.
From the headquarters of the Group in Burgos, there is a
follow-up of the students’ results, and study is boosted by
offering language courses to the best students.
Innoversia combines the social support and business strategy policies in the same project. On the one hand, the
employees of the plants in which the basic training needs
have been detected have access to programmes which
have been specifically thought to cover those lacks. On
the other hand, the programme meets the requirements
from the different plants concerning the professional qualifications of the employees. In the case of Brazil, the direct
relatives of the employees can benefit from the courses
for plastic technical experts. This is to say, they are given
the access to professional training with the acquisition of
official degrees, and, at the same time, a source of human
resources is created for the group, in an area in which the
amount of qualified work force is scarce.
· The Telecourse in Portugal, the oldest initiative of the
Group. Around one hundred employees have already
participated in the programme to obtain the Secondary
School Certificate. The impact on the employees is really
positive.
Each case is studied individually. For example, in Tangier,
it was considered that, before starting a professional training plan, it would be more productive to offer a basic
literacy one.
In all these plans, Innoversia wants to offer official certifications together with educational organizations, such as
the Senai (Nacional Service of Industrial Apprenticeship) in
Brazil. Besides, the Group is in charge of searching for the
appropriate subsidies, so that training costs will not affect
the employee in any case.
At present time, Innoversia has three training schools:
· The Training School in Brazil offers a professional training two-year course for plastic technical experts. It was
started in March 2009 and, at present, about thirty pupils study there, all of them direct relatives of the employees who work at the plants of Grupo Antolin in Brazil.
· Finally, in the first term of 2010, the Training School of
Tangier will be opened for the literacy training of the
employees.
Due to the positive results these experiences are obtaining, the group intends to expand this scheme of training
schools to the rest of emerging countries in which we operate, like China, India, South Africa or Mexico.
Innoversia intends to contribute to the development of the
emerging countries in which it operates, and it has proved to
be an efficient way to transmit the corporate culture. Likewise,
it boosts the pride of belonging to our group among the employees, who feel supported and valued by the company. w

Grupo Antolin-Cambrai was built in 2002 in order to produce door panels
J84 and deliver them to Grupo Antolin-Douai PIF. Later, from this project,
our team GA-Douai transformed the panels (Renault Scénic II & Mégane
CC) into door modules and delivered them synchronized.

New building of 2365 m² with 3 docks
devoted to synchronized deliver
At the beginning of 2007, RENAULT confirmed GA as
their supplier for panels of the Renault Scénic III (replacement of the JR84) with a delivery of L3PS* (identical scheme to the one working between GA-RyA and
GA-Palencia for Renault Mégane II)
However, after Renault decided to carry out the manufacturing of new vehicles
in the site at Douai, J96 (replacing the Espace) and H95 (4x4 vehicle with platform Scénic/Mégane), our customer asked us to study the feasibility and cost
of synchronized deliver of all the door panels addressed at the factory of Douai
from our site in Cambrai (35 km away from the Renault Douai factory).
The list of specifications was the following one:

SEARCHING THE RIGHT SOLUTION
After several months of reflections and analyses and several
presentations for Renault, we selected two possible solutions:
1st solution
Assembly of the panels of each of the vehicles depending
on the layer L3PS and packing according to the type of vehicle in the internal containers.
From left to right: Fabrice Deregnaucourt, Sébastien Ferro-Million,
Laurence Bernard, Amaury Deregnaucourt, Nicolas Marin (Supervisor),
Hervé Leconte (Development Responsible), Mickaël Bazin (Supervisor),
Robin Bogusz (IT Responsible), Sidhamed Zemmouri
Automatic output of the kits according to the time of receipt of the orders from Renault in order to feed the preparation post of the synchronized deliver batch.
Finally, the 2nd solution was accepted and the investment was
confirmed in February 2008, due to the following reasons:
· Economic profitable solution
“Horizontal” storage in the corridors (capacity 1.5 days)
which means a resynchronization area.
Resynchronization of the panels as soon as the orders for
the preparation of the synchronized deliver are received.
2nd solution
Assembly of the panels per batch and packing per kit (1
right panel and 1 left panel from the same vehicle)
· More flexible solution, without limits in diversity, with a setting up which could be used for other customers (Sevelnord,
for instance).
· No impact in case Renault could not guarantee a 95% reliable L3PS layer.
· Possibility to assembly the panels by batch (instead of L3PS layer)
· Smaller building surface (it saves space)
Arrangement of the kits in an automatic warehouse with a
capacity equivalent to 1.5 days of delivery
· Innovative solution, image improvement for Grupo Antolin.

SET IN MOTION
OF GA-CAMBRAI
PROJECT
March 2008
We ended up the negotiations with Viastore (chosen supplier for the building of the warehouse) and
the purchase order is launched.
At the same time, we started the detailed study of
the dimensions of the building in order to apply for
a planning permission.
June 2008
The works on the extension (2,365m2) started.
December 2008
The assembly of the shelves in the warehouse
started.
First half of 2009
The company VIASTORE installed 4 robots,
the conveyors, the wiring and the system of
automatic control.
Together with IT Department in Burgos, we
developed the computer application BLADE in
order to ensure the synchronized managing
of the orders, the management of the stored
products and of the production.
9th June 2009
After nearly two months of tuning, trials and training, the activity with Renault was started on, at a
part time pace during the first week and then at a
full time pace.
Automatic Warehouse: 4 robots, 4920 containers
Due to the stop of production of the old Renault Scénic (J84),
in two weekends we were able to set the assembly lines of
panels in line with the warehouse in order to achieve the best
possible linear flow of parts, totally suppressing the non-added
value movements of the material, since the raw material is received until the panel is delivered to the costumer.
After eight weeks of production, and despite some unforeseen
events, we did not provoke any stops in the chain to our customer and we did not make any reference mistakes.
In September 2009, we have started the synchronized delivery
of the first front door panels E95 (Mégane CC), manufactured
by our competitor Eurostyle.
We would like to thank our shareholders and the Managing Direction for relying on us when they accepted to start the investment, and we want to congratulate all those who participated
in the development of this project and the success of its launch.
We are looking forward to Renault’s making the decision
to resume their programmes (J96 y H95), programmes suppressed due to the current situation, and so their plant in
Douai will start again its production in two shifts (or three) in
the two lines. w

The Plastic Convention organised by the Door Function
Business Unit took place from 22nd to 24th September
and was attended by more than 50 specialists of Grupo

event was held at the Headquarters in Burgos.
The Convention started with the main participation of our customer Renault,
who carried out a very positive presentation regarding our relationship and our
future points of agreement, improvement and knowledge to our mutual benefit.
Afterwards, attendants were able to give their opinions through the presentations about Commercial, Industrial, Purchasing, Engineering and Projects, Quality
and Innovation matters. These presentations provided us a very realistic approach
to the situation in which we are.
But, the most interesting activities were the workshops, which took place through
all the morning on the last day and where everyone participated contributing
with their points of view and experience. The following 11 lines of action rose
from these workshops, lines of action to be carried out in the future with the

Knowledge
Management
in Grupo Antolin
In the Third Industrial Revolution or “Age of Knowledge” the main asset of
the companies and organizations is knowledge, having always in mind that
it is the people who generate and use it. Knowledge is a strategic element
which determines and configures organizations, being the only good which
increases when it is shared with the others

News Grupo Antolin
16 · Winter 2009
Up to a few years ago, knowledge was thought to be power, but, that power
lasts only for a little time, until another person or company achieves a higher
advance in knowledge and “ours” becomes obsolete and useless. Grupo Antolin has already been working intensely for two years on the strategic line of
Knowledge Management, which aims to manage effectively the key knowledge
for our company.
Laurence J. Peter, the originator of “Peter’s Principle” used to say that those ones
who do not know where they are going, end up somewhere else. Knowledge
Management must be perfectly tuned with the Company’s Strategy in order to
move forward in the present and future growth of the Company.
The organizations which work in “knowledge” generate changes in the culture
of the company, through the use of the intelligence of all the people who form
the company and using apprenticeship as the base for its development. This
allows for the generation of new business models, integrating the changes which
During Innovative Day Meetings, products and
innovations from the invited suppliers are shown to
Grupo Antolin employees
rise during its cycle of life. Under the premise that having a
great intelligence is no guarantee of its adequate application, Knowledge Management brings about working on the
adequate approach of application.
Grupo Antolin has generated its own model for Knowledge
Management based on the following tools and which answers the following questions:
WHAT do we need to know?
Knowledge Key Map.
It has been largely spoken about the advantages of Knowledge, but most of the organizations do not look upon the
COSTS OF NO KNOWLEDGE, which we could summarise into
the following:
WHO are going to use
knowledge?
Repetition of mistakes
Knowledge leaders and Knowledge Communities.
Lack of anticipation
HOW are we going to manage
knowledge?
Difficulty to “build” new
initiatives in a solid way
Knowledge Global Management System.
This model is based on the Development of Intelligence,
understanding knowledge as an asset that accumulates
in people and in the company, whose base is the use of
the experience. The experience needed by companies is
the one which according to the Latin origin of the term
“experiens” (entrepreneurial, active, constant) leads to
knowledge based on the people’s attitude, and not necessarily linked to time. We are seeking for the experience
which is generated by the different situations lived along
the time, and not the repetition of an activity during all
your life. “It is not the same to have 20 years of experience, as a year repeated 20 times”.
What types of intelligence are necessary for the survival of a
company? The answer to this question is ALL.
Identifying the experience: What do we know? How have
we learnt it? What does that knowledge have?
Learning from experience: Knowing the best practices in order to boost them, and the mistakes, to avoid them.
Wrong decisions based on
“ignorance” at every level
NO KNOWLEDGE generates huge costs to any organization,
and affects directly the profit and loss account and the relationship with the most significant stakeholders of the company (customers, suppliers and employees).
Therefore, it is important to manage adequately the key
knowledge of the company, considering which part of it
must be kept to be competitive, which part must be boost
to become excellent and where we must innovate in order
to become leaders.
The organizations which put Knowledge Management into
practice, bet on the change and transformation into new
companies based on a culture of Self-development and
Growth of the People who form them, being aware of the
depth of the global transformation which is taking place
and with a spirit of anticipation so as to influence and change the future. w

Influenza A (h1n1)
How to fight against it at work
The new virus of the (H1N1) influenza A is produced by a new strain of
the influenza virus against which, due to the fact that it is new, we are not
protected and a lot of people will run the risk of suffering. Symptoms of this
flu are the same as typical flu symptoms: fever (higher than 38ºC), cough
and fatigue. You can also have headache, sore throat, sneezing, body aches
and, eventually, diarrhoea and vomiting

Yes, there are. The new flu virus is treated like the seasonal
flu, with medicines to ease the symptoms: to lower the fever, for the cough, for body aches…
WHAT IS A PANDEMIC OF FLU?
A pandemic is an epidemic affecting a lot of countries in the
world at the same time, as it is the case with this flu.

company, in order to control the journeys from and to the
affected areas.

Follow-up of the indications from the Health Directions in
each country. Actions such as the ones below were taken:
· Information and training of the employees through talks,
posters, leaflets about the Flu.
· Control and follow-up of employees showing suspicious
symptoms.
September 2009-October 2009
WHAT DOES IT MEAN THAT
WE ARE ON ALERT PHASE 6 OF
PANDEMIC?
On last 11th July, the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to raise the pandemic alert level of the flu from phase
5 to phase 6; the designation of this phase indicates that
a global pandemic is under way. This means that there is a
further spreading of the illness, but not that it is becoming
more serious. WHO defines the state of the new flu as a
moderate pandemic, on the basis of the following reasons:
Press release from the Corporative HHRR Manager, reporting about the Corporative Policy to take.
Setting up of the Corporative Committee against (H1N1)
Influenza A.
Development of the Corporative Performance Plan.
Setting up of the Regional and Local Committees.

need to be taken to hospital or receiving medical care.

Generally speaking, the level of seriousness of this illness
in different countries seems to be similar to the one of the
seasonal flu. The hospitals and care systems in most of the
countries have been able to assist, up to this moment, all
the people who have been in the need.
· Arranging Measures: i.e. Elaboration of Continuity Plans.
WHICH ACTIONS HAVE BEEN
TAKEN BY GRUPO ANTOLIN IN
ORDER TO PREVENT IT?
The following actions have been taken by Grupo Antolin
in order to prevent the effects of the (H1N1) Influenza A:
· Preventive Measures: Promotion of healthy habits, cleaning and disinfection, control and follow-up of sick employees, and so on.
· Monthly report and follow-up.
Up to this moment, the number of registered cases in the
companies of the Group on a world basis has been very low,
although it is likely that until April-May several waves of cases will take place on different levels of intensity, depending
on the place. Due to this reason, it is advisable to be careful
with healthy habits and keep a healthy diet.w

From left to right and from the top to the bottom: Twizy, Kangoo, Zoe and Fluence. Electric vehicle range by Renault to be launched in 2011 & 2012
All these factors suggest an attractive change of course
towards cleaner, cheaper and renewable energies. Electric
vehicles are the main general trend and are outlined as one
of the best alternatives of the sector. They are supported
by the increasing technological evolution and their future is
already a reality.
Marketeer, 1956. Electric mini-car
Also in the past, due to the shortage of oil after the Second
World War, some innovating ideas arose aiming at smaller and
lighter cars which provided for better mobility and were less
polluting, that was the case of “micro cars”.
Nowadays, it is hardly surprising that older ideas such as electric micro cars are more feasible than ever, and governments
promote them and offer incentives for their development.

Going back to past technologies, applying new, more technological materials and providing higher levels of design, could
be key elements for their evolution.
Our main customers are developing electric vehicles which
match these ecological criteria that tend to minimize environmental impact from the creative stage, going through manufacturing and use, to the different possibilities at the end of
their life (recycling, reuse and so on).
Different ways are searched for in order to commercialise the
vehicles at attractive prices, such as the renting of batteries or
offering the option of leasing the vehicles to the customers,
levelling them to current prices.
At this moment, there are efforts to improve infrastructures in
order to reach further introduction as well as the development
of ion-lithium batteries with larger capacity. There is a search
for larger autonomy using electric energy only, providing the
customer with higher comfort.
In order to comply with all these features, it is necessary to
adapt to a new shape conception of the urban vehicle, higher,
to make it possible to place the batteries on the lower part and
smaller, to make it light and easy to use.
The creation of lighter vehicles is one of the priorities for the
reduction of energy consumption, minimizing CO2 emissions.
To reach this goal it is necessary to use lighter materials, to reduce the size of the vehicles and to develop new technologies.
In short, the design of an electric vehicle implies a change in
the usual approaches to adapt to each of the necessities which
this type of vehicles demands.
The inside functions will be reduced in size and complexity. It
will be necessary to create spaces which are plainer, larger and
brighter, which help to improve the inside sensations. The use
of lighter colours, sunroofs, new touch sensations in different
materials, along with large doses of creativity, will help to make
these interiors more attractive and consequently make them
key elements at the moment of taking the decision to purchase
them. w

Health and Safety Certification for
Leamington
Grupo Antolin-Kent plant of Leamington (United Kingdom) has obtained the certification of its Health and Safety Management System according to the international
standard OHSAS 18001, after successfully getting through an external audit from the
qualifying organization TÜV, last September.
The implementation of the Management System (Policy, Handbook and Procedures of
Health and Safety of Grupo Antolin) at an optimal level to fulfil all the requirements
of the standard, has been performed during the last year. This implementation, doubtlessly, has benefited from the fact that OHSAS 18001 has a very similar structure
to the environmental standard ISO 14001 considering that, actually, there are several
common procedures with the environmental and quality management systems.
From Grupo Antolin-Kent Management it is expected that this more structured management of health and safety will contribute to reduce labour risks and, therefore,
the number of accidents and labour sicknesses. w
It is important to highlight the degree
of confidence surrounding the transaction, described as a success by the
financial community, having in mind a
high competitive environment and a
severe shortage of liquidity in the financial market. This milestone represents
an important step in the future of Grupo Antolin. The loan renewal arrives to
strengthen the financial structure of
the company and will enable it to face
the investments needed to continue
capturing the potential growth expected in its strategic plan with the necessary financial strength and confidence
of the financial community.
The industrial vocation and business
focus of the company is characterized by a clear strategy for long-term
growth that is sustained by a team
of highly trained professionals. Ultimately, this combination of financial
strength, clear growth strategy and
an exceptional professional teamwork is the best guarantee of the
success in facing the challenges of
the automotive sector. w

5S in the Area
of the Industrial
Corporate
Management
Among the series of actions for the integration of the Industrial Corporate Management (Dirección Corporativa Industrial-DCI), during the month of September,
it was decided to launch an exercise 5S,
in which all the team took an active part.
In order to perform this exercise, the staff of
DCI was divided into groups, led by the staff
in the Area of Corporate Improvement.
At the beginning of the exercise, the participants received “in situ” training about the
5S, their frame and scope, in the Head Of-
fice. Following the 3+2 approach for their
application, the 3 first or action S (Select,
Sort, Clean) and the 2 last ones, Standardize, creating reference states (meeting
rooms, common cupboards, corridors, wiring, printers) and Sustain, with the leaders’
commitment (follow-up and improvement
through the radar graph) and the Management (Kamishibai, confirmation and maintenance of standards).
The result of the action was amazing:
27% of the storing space was released:
- This translates into visual improvement, considering that the Head Office is the image of our business.
- It lets us save time; it is easier to find
people and material.
- Fewer mistakes are made, in shipping
and analysis of the information.
- The appropriate state of the
materials and the means lengthens
their useful life.
- Besides, it lets us identify other improvement areas.
Consequently, our work is of a higher
quality, more productive, and this has a
direct effect in the cost. An organised
and clean place is a safer place and it
motivates the ones who work in it.
The 5S in the plants of the Group have already been launched and their implementation in the Head Office will be completed
along 2010. Next time you visit us, pay
attention to the Reference States! w

On the other hand, the last year winner, Joel
Fernández Soto, from GA-PGA, tells us excited about his trip to Disneyland Paris, which
he enjoyed from the first moment with his
family. Upon arrival in the hotel, that was a
real western town, his eyes lit up when they
saw Chip and Dale. To see the faces of both
- him and his sister - makes it worthwhile.
Everything was new discoveries and sensations.
They have lived few days of a true madness.
They have been getting up very early to enjoy
the park before its opening to the public and
organizing everything not to stop for even 5
minutes. Thus, after spending the day between
attractions and spectacles, at the time of dinner
they fell in a deep sleep. They have taken the
advantage of the trip in 100%.
Joel, what have you liked the most?

lot as well a Buzz Lightyear, she liked it so
much that she wanted to buy a gun from
Buzz. I liked a lot as well eating in the restaurant of Mickey. My sister and I could
have seen and make photos with Mickey,
Goofy, Pluto and lots of more.
Is there any attraction that you remember especially apart from these
ones?
The one with Nemo, it seemed very calm
and it was not calm at all. It impressed my
little sister a lot. But well, she was brave
and didn’t cry at all.
Is there something more that you remember?

A brand proud of its history
However, if we want to understand how Audi has
reached a hundred years of age constantly innovating,
without forgetting the criteria of technology, safety, design and sportive image, which have allowed them to
remain at the top, it is important to have a look at its
history and see the development of its evolution in the
manufacturing of engines and cars from its beginnings.

“100 years in the vanguard of technology” says the slogan of Audi, because
nowadays, we all see this brand as a synonym of innovation and quality,
since Audi has the honour to have been pioneer in plenty of the technological steps forward achieved in the mechanical field in the last century.
On 16th July 1909, August Horch, due to the disagreements with his
former company, A. Horch & Cie, founded by himself, left the company and created a new one under the name Horch AutomobilWerke GmbH. Given that his surname was protected by trademark,
he changed it for Audi, which is in fact its Latin translation, which
means “listen”. The name of the new company, Audiwerke GmbH,
came into effect on 25th April 1910.
Since the middle 1920’s, the North American cars had been invading Europe and demanding from the local brands the updating of
their methods of chain production. With the economic crisis of
1929 the situation went worse, and it was then when the four
main automotive German companies decided to merge. Audi,
DKW, Horch and Wanderer became a unique company which they
called Auto Union AG. This is how in 1932 the emblem of the four
hoops was born, which is currently in force.
The success of this union lay in the fact that the names and certain
autonomy of each company as a brand were kept. In order to avoid
the competitiveness within the newly born Auto Union AG, they
carried out a distribution of market segments:
· DKW – motorcycles and small cars
· Wanderer – medium cars
· Audi – luxurious cars addressed at the medium segment
· Horch – high range vehicles.
The 30’s were a stage of great success in sports for Auto Union, a
time of important deeds at the Great Prizes with the Type A, Type
B, Type C or the aerodynamic Type C Streamliner, a real gem from
1937 with its 16 cylinders and 520 HP which beat all the speed
records (more than 400 km/h).
August Horch
(1868 - 1951)
August Horch, German engineer, pioneer in
the automotive industry and founder of the
company which is the Audi brand at present.
He worked for Karl Benz from 1896 until he
created A. Horch & Cie in November 1899
in Ehrenfeld (Cologne, Germany). The first
Horch automobile was made in 1901. The
company moved to Reichenbach in 1902 and
to Zwickau in 1904.
Horch left the company in 1909 after an
internal fight and set up his own company,
which marked the beginning of a story that
is worth to remember. Although his company
went through plenty of changes, Horch was
a nonconformist man, who questioned everything; in his mind, the idea which prevailed
was to make cars that gave solutions to
problems which nobody had raised before,
and that was the way he lived, constantly
innovating, what made him become a legend
in the history of automotive industry.

torenwerke AG (a manufacturer of motorcycles mainly). The
name Audi AG was definitely settled in 1985.
Two of the highest successful creations of Audi were the four
wheel drive and the TDI engines. The Audi Quattro, in the market
since 1980, was the first high performance four wheel drive vehicle. A new driving concept which had only been used in lorries
and SUV vehicles up to that moment. Thanks to its world success
in the motor sport, it was gradually applied in all the Audi range.
And, although direct injection was not totally new for sedans,
the TDI improved the development and the performance. In
1989 the Audi 100 was presented, with a TDI engine, which
was a success in the market. However, the greatest success
would come in the forthcoming years: in 1991 they launched
the now historical block 1.9 TDI with four cylinders and 90 HP.
Later, it was launched in its 110 HP version, with variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger, until the birth of engines
such as V10 or V12 TDI, for the Audi Q7 with 500 HP.
Nowadays, this brand keeps on innovating, following its legacy, what they call the essence of the real engine of Audi,
and acting on the essential pillars of automobiles: technology, safety, design and sportive image. Currently, within the
Volkswagen group, Audi is the brand with the highest performance and latest technology. In 2008 Audi sold 1,003,469
vehicles, got a turnover of 34,196 million euros, and yielded
3,177 million euros in profits before tax. w
