wurde 1672 als Pfarrkirche erbaut und in rund
150 Jahren zur Kathedrale
ausgebaut.
Notre-Dame Basilica was built
as a church in 1672 and extended to create a cathedral
over the course of some 150
years.

ahrhundertealte Steinfassaden, traditionelle Bistros, elegante Boulevards, französisches Flair – Montreal kann seine
­gallische Herkunft nicht verleugnen. Jenseits
der bilderbuchhaften Altstadt, die stark an
die Alte Welt erinnert, befindet sich aber eine
ganz andere Welt: eine moderne und geschäftige nordamerikanische Millionenstadt mit
Hochhäusern, Geschäftszentren und grosszügigen, geometrisch angelegten Parkanlagen. Das Nebeneinander der Kulturen sorgt
in Montreal für eine lebendige, pulsierende
Atmosphäre und eine interessante kulturelle
Vielfalt – ein idealer Nährboden für neue
Ideen. Nicht nur die ursprünglich französischen und britischen Einwanderer prägen
die Stadt, sondern auch solche aus Italien,
Portugal, China und der Karibik, die später
nach Montreal emigriert sind. So ist die Stadt
auf einer Insel zwischen dem Sankt-LorenzStrom und dem Ottawa-Fluss ein buntes
­Kaleidoskop, in dem Kreativität, Geschäftssinn und Savoir-vivre Hand in Hand gehen.

mit bodenständigem kanadischem Pragmatismus. Eine Millionenstadt mit Charme, die

enturies-old stone façades, traditional
bistros, elegant boulevards, French flair
– Montreal’s Gallic ancestry is impos­sible
to overlook. But beyond the picture-book Old
Town, so powerfully evocative of the old continent, can be found another completely different world: a bustling modern North American
metropolis with skyscrapers, business centres
and spacious, geometrically landscaped parks
and gardens. This juxtaposition of cultures
­imbues the city with an exhilaratingly vibrant
atmosphere and a wealth of fascinating cultural diversity, creating the perfect breeding
ground for new ideas. It is not only the original
French and British immigrants who have
helped forge the city, however, but also those
from Italy, ­Portugal, China and the Caribbean
who settled in Montreal later on. This city, on
its island between the St Lawrence and Ottawa
Rivers, has become a colourful kaleidoscope in
which creativity, business acumen and savoirvivre go hand in hand. Blending European lifestyle with down-to-earth Canadian pragmatism, Montreal is a vast, enchanting city that
keeps pace with the times, yet Canada’s imposingly rugged scenery lies right on its doorstep.

von 1983 ist zu einem
­grossen Hingucker in der
Stadt geworden.

district of Ville-Marie (the
origin­al name of Montreal) has
been awarded certification­
for its energy and environmental performance. Built in
1983, the building is a colourful
kaleidoscope consisting of
58 transparent glass panels
and a further 332 in a variety of
different colours and has
­become one of the city’s most
eye-catching sights.
